Travis Scott’s “WAKE UP” Turns Six: Another Year Where La Flame Was Robbed At The GRAMMYs

The year that most likely started Travis Scott’s confusion with the GRAMMYs was 2018. That’s when the Houston, Texas native put forth his third studio album, ASTROWORLD. Since its release six years ago, it has become one of the biggest projects not just for him, but also in the streaming era. It boasts billions of streams and easily possesses his most hits on one tracklist to date. Additionally, its simply one of the best pop/trap rap LPs of the 2010s decade thanks to some memorable performances from the main attraction and his laundry of guests, as well as the rich and expansive soundscapes. Furthermore, it’s constantly argued as Travis Scott’s best work thanks to songs like “WAKE UP”.

One of two collaborations between him and The Weeknd, it is essentially a raunchy and wavy love letter to their partners at the time. Overall, “WAKE UP” features some of the most creative, playful, and serene instrumentals on the record. It’s just another reason why Scott and Abel are one of the best rapper/singer duos in the mainstream. Moreover, this track is part of the reason why it was snubbed for Best Rap Album. A lot of listeners painfully remember Cardi B’s massive, but not nearly as impactful Invasion of Privacy taking home the GRAMMY.

It may not just be the fact Scott didn’t win that year that still angers so many till this day. It’s also because Pusha T, Mac Miller and Nipsey Hussle were also in the running and were denied. All of them made incredible records that year and were more than worthy winners. However, it’s arguably worse for Scott because he could have two wins in this category. Killer Mike winning it this year was definitely a great choice. But at the end of the day, UTOPIA may once again be the more remembered album. Sadly, Scott will have to live with the Run The Jewels MC subliminally taunting him for the rest of his career.

Say you was in the crowd, I never looked

“Nothing But Net” By Travis Scott, PARTYNEXTDOOR, & Young Thug Should Be Much Bigger Than It Is: Revisiting The Soundcloud Masterpiece

Travis Scott’s journey to mega stardom has been one heck of a wild journey. From being a Kanye West understudy to overcoming the controversial Astroworld tragedy, and to still be on one of the biggest hip-hop tours in recent memory with Circus Maximus is quite remarkable. While many are going to view the larger accomplishments as the ones that got him to this point, it is really the journey in between those major milestones. One of the more underrated things Travis Scott did earlier on was becoming something of a Soundcloud legend. His catalog on the platform features some of his most fun and grimy bangers still to this day. Travis’s “Nothing But Net”, featuring Young Thug and PARTYNEXTDOOR, is one that we constantly revisit.

The star power isn’t just on the mic, though. TM88, Boi-1da, and Southside cooked up a darkly wonderous instrumental that is evokes quintessential 2014-2015 Travi$. From hilariously nasty bars and an outrageous delivery from Thugger, to the toxicity oozing from PND, as well as the atmospheric performance from Travis, the track has it all. Sadly, though, the song never got as much love as it deserves. Instead of making the final cut for Rodeo, it was instead released as a loosie on Scott’s Soundcloud and on a Hustle Gang mixtape called, We Run This, Vol. 13 (2016).

Yes, it still has over 21.6 million plays on the streaming service, which is very respectable. However, with Rodeo evolving into one of the best trap albums of all time nearly 10 years later, this could have been one its biggest success stories. Travis is certainly doing more than fine right now, so it doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. What this does prove is that he has so much heat in the vault that ultimately, he has to split hairs. But we still are going to show love to it, and you should too.

Future’s “Thought It Was A Drought” Remains A Top-Tier Metro Boomin Collab 9 Years Later

Dirty soda, Spike Lee / White girl, Ice T / Fully loaded AP, yeah“. These lyrics are synonymous with Future’s “I Thought It Was a Drought”. Woozy and intoxicating, the intro to his third album is one of the most iconic trap rap songs, period. The same can be said for the 13-song set. It perfectly kicks off the druggy and lean-filled trip that Future is about to send you on. This LP was released right around the time that he broke through into superstardom and it further solidified his chemistry with Metro Boomin. The latter was also considered a bubbling talent waiting to explode and when this track and project released, it was game over from there.

Post DS2, the Southern hip-hop/trap tandem is still producing top-notch material in these subgenres. That is even with all of the newcomers who have tried to recapture their magic in some shape or form. In fact, they are still in the upper echelon this year after giving fans a two-fer with WE DON’T TRUST YOU and WE STILL DON’T TRUST TOU. Speaking of which, those projects have some incredible Future and Metro works. But for us, “Thought It Was a Drought” manages to stand stall amongst the trees. The thick kicks, blistering hi-hats, and ghoulish tones looming the back are instantly recognizable. Future’s cool demeanor while rapping about drugs, sex, and the traditional trap fare instantly transport you to his world.

ScHoolboy Q Holds “Groovy Tony / Eddie Kane” In High Regard & We See Why: Revisiting It Eight Years Later

The aggressive nature of gangsta rap and hardcore hip-hop is something that ScHoolboy Q embodies. Of course, growing up in California helps, as he was around that style of genre growing up. Over the course of his frankly underrated career, Q has not just copied and pasted these subsets for the modern fan. He has truly formed a unique approach since getting his feet wet in the music industry over a decade ago. His third studio album Oxymoron saw him take that West Coast sound and make it slightly more accessible for fans with songs like “Collard Greens” and Studio”. But ScHoolboy Q’s now eight-year-old project Blank Face LP took a more innovative step, and “Groovy Tony / Eddie Kane” is a prime example of his creative genius.

While the instrumental on the previous album single did/does not turn reinvent the wheel per se, it still absolutely bangs. The eerie whispers of “Blank Face” play really nicely with the ghostly tones, dirty drums, and Q’s animated flows. If you remember, the single version was just the “Groovy Tony” side and there was no feature. While the track did not necessarily require the latter to succeed, the addition of Jadakiss was pure genius. His trademark cadence fits snuggly without ruining the momentum. On the “Eddie Kane” half, the raspy and soulful singing from Dem Jointz, along with the even darker production take things to another level. ScHoolboy Q views this song as one his favorites from Blank Face LP and so do we without a doubt.

Dr. Dre Lit Up “The Pop Out” Alongside Kendrick Lamar With His Snoop Dogg-Assisted Classic, “Still D.R.E.”: Stream

Kendrick Lamar’s “The Pop Out” concert on Juneteenth in Los Angeles held many great moments for the current generation of rap fans, but also plenty of love to the forefathers of the West Coast. Moreover, Dr. Dre popped out to perform his classic Snoop Dogg collab “Still D.R.E.,” and it reinvigorated love for an overplayed hit. Well, the Cali legend certainly proved us wrong, and we’re sure plenty of people have been bumping this classic piano line and crisp percussive pattern today in wake of the show.

In addition, Dr. Dre also graced us to “California Love” by him and Tupac Shakur, and even introduced “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar, leading to an absolutely electric moment. But this doesn’t mean that his guest appearance went without scrutiny. Many folks lamented that K.Dot chose to platform a known woman abuser, regardless of the impact of “Still D.R.E.” or that of its artist as a whole. While Dre has a complicated legacy to reckon with and be accountable for, one can’t deny that his blueprint for G-funk and West Coast hip-hop alongside Snoop Dogg and others is worthy of recognition and praise in tandem with the conversation around his personal actions.

Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg also have another album on the way, so it looks like the West Coast will stay up. Revisit the music video for their anthem “Still D.R.E.” below, take a look at some standout bars down there too, and let us know what you think of this throwback in the comments section. Kendrick Lamar has made some classics over the years. Overall, his album good kid, m.A.A.d city has some of the best modern hip-hop songs ever made. Rick Ross & Trina Look Almost Unrecognizable In Resurfaced 2002 Photo

It’s been a couple of years since Rick Ross and Trina sparked dating rumors following their many collabs together, but their history goes back much further than many fans might assume. Moreover, a photo recently surfaced of both rappers together all the way back in 2002, and they look downright unrecognizable from their present-day iterations (which we say in the most neutral way possible). We wonder whether the two are still tight and working on music together or if things are more casual these days. Also, we can’t help but laugh at the idea that Rozay and Katrina will have to think about whether to bring back the huge gold neck pieces or Celtics gear (which makes sense for the current NBA Finals run).

Jokes aside, we know that they most recently went on a massive tour with Gucci Mane and Jeezy announced back in 2021. The trek also tapped Boosie Badazz, 2 Chainz, Lil Kim, Fabolous, and DJ Drama, and it was a pretty star-studded and hectic affair. While this 2002 snapshot definitely surprised fans, it’s interesting to think about whether this reaction and resurfacing will inspire them to collaborate or link up again. Sometimes you find excuses for reunions in the most unlikely of places, which is hip-hop Twitter in this case.

Rick Ross & Trina Back In 2002

Elsewhere, Trina recently spoke about feeling like she should come up more often in top five femcee conversations due to her legacy. “I feel like I know what I’ve done and I feel like even your top 5 has been at some point influenced by me,” she expressed during a recent interview with Carlos King. “I know, or probably even worked with or loved – even idolized. It’s probably somebody I really support and love in the industry.”

Meanwhile, Rick Ross is not as concerned with the same recognition that Trina is, but rather wants to expand his empire. For example, he recently announced a huge “Luxury & Lifestyle” auction for charity that will probably also hold a lot of flexing and lavish happenings. Maybe these two will cross paths again, or they’ll just laugh at how things were back in 2002. Would you feel the same about a throwback pic of you from the early aughts… or am I speaking to a zoomer?

Ray J’s 19-Year-Old Hit “One Wish” Could Be Viewed As A Potential Metaphor For His Career

Ray J has had one of the more interesting careers in music. The McComb, Mississippi multi-talent has played the role of R&B songwriter, television star, entrepreneur, among other things. However, it seems like no matter what, the thing that people will remember him for is the infamous sex tape. Him and an ex-girlfriend Kim Kardashian were constantly in the headlines in some fashion because of it, and it still comes up today. In fact, an interview with Shannon Sharpe’s podcast, Club Shay Shay, just dropped with him and he still had a hard time talking about it.

However, the speed bumps did not stop with Kim. Ray J also had a tumultuous relationship with Love & Hip-Hop co-star Princess Love. They announced divorce after divorce, and it just seemed that they were never on the same page. Now, the troubled music mogul is tied to Sukihana, who is a controversial figure in her own right. Things can always improve, and Ray J may be getting a second chance now to rewrite his legacy going forward.

Once upon a time, Mustard was the biggest producer in the world. Eventually, he dabbled in EDM and found himself delving into other projects. In 2024, Mustard now has one of the biggest songs in the world, thanks to Kendrick Lamar and his pure hatred for Drake. Of course, we are talking about “Not Like Us.”

With the success of “Not Like Us,” fans are going back into Mustard’s catalog to listen to some of his best beats. Well, one of them was given to Tyga all the way back in 2010. The song in question is “Rack City,” which immediately went platinum in the club. Overall, this is one of Tyga’s biggest songs, and for good reason.
