Don Toliver And Kali Uchis Had Us Floating On “Drugs N Hella Melodies”

Don Toliver’s rise to fame for most listeners began back in 2018 with his appearance on a big-time album. In 2018, he joined Travis Scott for a song off his album ASTROWORLD. With all of the features being hidden, some artists were hard to discern on first listen and Don was one of them. He captured listeners with his energetic and unique voice on “CAN’T SAY,” and the rest is history from there.

He went on to drop his debut album Heaven Or Hell in 2020 to much acclaim. Don showed he could command an album by himself and he quickly followed it up a year later. That brings us to the record of discussion today, Life Of A DON. This album just turned two and we wanted to celebrate its release with arguably the most popular and waviest song, “Drugs N Hella Melodies,” featuring Kali Uchis.

This was the second lead single for L.O.A.D coming after the release of “What You Need.” The collaboration makes perfect sense seeing how the two have been dating for two years now. But, also, from a musical perspective, both of their voices create a harmonious symphony. The beat, partially provided by DJ Dahi, is very melodic, woozy, and transcendent. The song definitely lives up to its name.

What were your initial thoughts on “Drugs N Hella Melodies” from Don Toliver and Kali Uchis? Was this your favorite song on the first listen of Life Of A DON? Is this the best project he has ever put out? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. S*x full of adrenaline
This p***y put you right to sleep just like a sedative
Not to sound conceited, I’m not one to brag
But I’m the girl you needed that you never had
Some people only see the negative
Some people find a way to see the good in everything

Lil Nas X And Jack Harlow Had The Entire World Feeling As Confident As Ever On “INDUSTRY BABY”

Rapper and singer Lil Nas X started off his musical career as a star, but his debut album catapulted him into megastar status. The Georgia artist had fans in a stranglehold for better or for worse with the release of “Old Town Road” back in 2019. Some musical listeners’ stomachs were turning inside and out at the fact that country and rap were topping the charts instead of the traditional formula. On top that, many felt Bill Ray Cyrus’s placement on the song was for the pure shock factor to get people’s attention.

Well, his controversial song paid off regardless, because Lil Nas X is now a massive force in the industry. But, he has always embraced his quirkiness and never has taken himself too seriously, which is why so many people gravitate toward his music. It is unapologetic and he could not care less if you approve of his stylistic choices. Many were already labeling him a one-hit wonder after “Old Town Road,” but boy were those people far from right. All he has done since that time is release some of the most ear-grabbing and catchy melodies of the past four years.

Listen To “INDUSTRY BABY” From Lil Nas X And Jack Harlow

One of those across his stacked discography is easily “INDUSTRY BABY.” You can find this hit and plenty of others on his debut album, MONTERO, which just turned two today. Its greatest asset is the relatability factor with its lyrics about proving people wrong and not letting the criticism drag you down. Both performances from Nas X and Jack Harlow are so fun and memorable. It is also a full-circle moment for the artist that is always uplifting to hear. On top of that, it boasts outstanding horn-laced production from Take A Daytrip and Kanye West. Unfortunately, with him busy with other venues, we have not gotten any music since 2022, but do not sleep on him, because many made that mistake already.

What were your initial thoughts on the song, “INDUSTRY BABY,” with Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow? Is this Nas X’s best song he has ever made? Is this the best song off of MONTERO? 50 Cent’s “Ayo Technology” Was A Big Reason “Curtis” Was So Successful

Back In 2007 (which is crazy to think was 16 years ago now) brought about some truly massive albums. Shock Value by Timbaland, American Gangster by Jay-Z, and Souljaboytellem.com by Soulja Boy, were some of the big-ticket LPs. However, the two that stand alone from the rest of the pack are Kanye West’s Graduation and 50 Cent’s Curtis. What is even more fascinating, is that both legends decided to go one-on-one on September 11, 2007.

Ye’s and Fif’s respective projects reeled in gargantuan numbers during their first week of sales. The Chicago kid (Kanye) easily surpassed everyone with the most copies sold in its first week in 2007 with 957,000 units. But, New York’s finest was right up there still, putting up a whopping 691,000 figure. In today’s rap landscape that is nearly impossible to do nowadays, especially in 2023. A contributing factor to this album’s moneymaking ability was the track, “Ayo Technology.”

Relisten To “Ayo Technology” Off Of Curtis From 50 Cent

According to Genius, this was the fourth single ahead of the rapper’s third commercial release. It reached a high peak on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart debuting at number five. Additionally, the track back in January of 2023 went two times platinum. It is another club banger for 50 and one that flies under the radar. That might do with the fact that he went for a more smooth and melodic tone, bringing on Justin Timberlake and Timbaland into the mix. The beat from Timb is very video game-esque sort of fitting into the title of the track.

What were your initial thoughts on “Ayo Technology” off of Curtis by 50 Cent, Timbaland, and Justin Timberlake? Is this an underrated hit in 50’s catalog? Baby Keem’s “Scars” Shows Why He Is One Of The Most Exciting Artists Of The Decade

Back in 2021, there were plenty of fantastic records that were drawing heavy album-of-the-year consideration. But, one that you have to include on that list is Baby Keem’s, The Melodic Blue. It is crazy to think that this project is already two years old. Sometimes, albums can grow stale in a short time after their release. However, with all of the various sounds and instrumentals that Keem attacks here, it is still holding its value to this day.

There are tons of outstanding tracks across this 16-track LP. The opening cut, “trademark usa” is a fan-favorite. The drone-like beat in the first half is very unique and Keem’s lyrics cover a wide range of topics such as artists not taking risks in their music. That is all the California rapper does on The Melodic Blue. Other examples of this include the glitchy pop track “16” which is a beautiful closer to an ever-changing tracklist. Another cut here that is a stunner is “scars.”

Listen To “Scars” Off The Melodic Blue From Baby Keem

This song draws a lot of inspiration from Kanye West’s massively influential 2008 record, 808s & Heartbreak. Specifically, it samples the hit “Love Lockdown” which is very light on the instrumentation. “Scars” is also minimal but takes a different lyrical approach. Keem is passionately singing and rapping about how the toughest decisions in his life are messing with his mental fortitude. The multi-talent put out an impressive deluxe version in October 2022. Most of those songs really could have shown up on the original, which shows how much potential Keem still has left to tap into.

What were your initial thoughts on The Melodic Blue from Baby Keem? Was this one of the best albums of the last few years? Is he one of the most exciting artists in hip-hop today? Which song is your favorite off of this project? We want to hear what you have to say about all of this. Drake’s “Fair Trade” Proves That He And Travis Scott Are A Terrific Duo

There is not much more to say about Drake anymore. His career in hip-hop will go down as one the most dominant in the genre’s over 50-year history. There might be artists that come somewhat close to the records that he holds. But, ultimately, whether you like him or not, Drizzy is one of the greatest to ever do it and not many will really touch him. That has to do with him being able to cater to so many audiences with his effortless crossovers into R&B, pop, and rap. Certified Lover Boy, is another example of that.

Another massive record in his discography, CLB, as it is often referred to, might not have won a whole lot of fans and critics. However, there are plenty of bangers and hits on his sixth studio album. Whether it is his knack to create incredible LP intros with “Champagne Poetry.” Or, it could be to create a party anthem with “Way 2 Sexy” with Future and Young Thug, Drake has songs that still get tremendous replay value. One of those tracks has to be “Fair Trade” featuring Travis Scott.

Listen To “Fair Trade” From Drake And Travis Scott

A smash track for both superstars, the song is about being okay with losing people who are not good for you. In that process, you begin to feel better about the outlook of your life, and Drake’s hook below had everyone creating Instagram captions with it. Travis Scott also delivers here after the slight beat switch in the second half. His verse echoes the same themes, showing how in sync these two are when they hop on a track. It adds to their fantastic collaboration catalog with songs like, “MELTDOWN,” “SICKO MODE,” “Company,” and many more.

What were your initial thoughts on “Fair Trade” by Drake and Travis Scott? Is this album and song still in your rotation? Where does this album rank in Drake’s discography? Travis Scott’s “Goosebumps” Solidified His Superstar Status

In 2015, a budding Houston artist by the name of Travis Scott released his debut album, Rodeo. It is widely considered possibly the greatest trap album of all time. It took the subgenre to heights it really had never reached before. Travis was able to blend grittiness with artsy in a world where trap meant rumbling 808s and loud hi-hats. He drew out melodies, created elegant and grand atmospheres, and his now signature beat switches, into one near-flawless record.

Tracks like “90210,” “Oh My Dis Side,” “Maria I’m Drunk,” and so many others are classics. It got fans and critics uncontrollably excited about what Scott could do moving forward. Just about a year later on September 2, 2016, Travis capitalized on this hype with the release of his sophomore LP, Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight. A 14-track project where La Flame gunned for mostly ethereal and moody vibes. Many believe this is his most underrated album in his discography and it is easy to see why. The hits on here are very solid with “pick up the phone” with Quavo and Young Thug, “beibs in the trap” featuring NAV, and “through the late night” with one of his idols, Kid Cudi. However, the one cut that stands above the rest is none other than “goosebumps.”

Listen To “Goosebumps” By Travis Scott And Kendrick Lamar

An unexpected feature from Kendrick Lamar had many going insane at the fact that he would hop on a song with Travis. The rapper shared similar thoughts. Around the time of Birds, Scott was interviewed by Hot 97. He talked about how grateful he was to work with Lamar. “Shout out K-Dot, I love you.” He goes on, “Yo I’m on Kendrick’s radar!” Lamar had a show where he had fans singing along to “Antidote.” That is when he knew he needed him for “goosebumps.” The guest verse is one of the best of 2016 with all of his crazy high notes and cadences. Pair it with Travis’ iconic hook and you have a hit. In June 2023 the track surpassed over 2 billion streams on Spotify, cementing Travis as a superstar.

What were your initial thoughts on “goosebumps” by Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar? Is this song and album still in your rotation all of these years later? The Game’s “LAX Files” Was A Nod To West Coast Culture

If there is one thing to know about The Game, it is that he is a massive figure for West Coast hip-hop. Music fans have enjoyed the Compton, California native’s tough-guy persona for two decades now. Most of his albums have done a masterful job at amplifying this. One of The Game’s two 2008 releases spoke to the pride that showed for his roots. The album that is being celebrated today is LAX.

More specifically, the track “LAX Files,” was and still is a terrific cut from a stacked tracklist. The Genius annotation for this song encapsulates what this track is all about. “LAX Files (In reference to the famed show X-Files which investigates and details UFC life) is the 2nd track on Games 2008 album LAX. As the name implies, Game takes us through an X-File type investigation of gang-life and living in Southern LA.” But this is not the only way of The Game repping California.

“Work REMIX” Is An Underrated Trap Classic From A$AP Ferg

It is safe to say that a whole bunch of fantastic rap records were released during the 2010s. More specifically in the trap subgenre, there are so many great albums to list off. Culture by Migos, Rodeo and Astroworld by Travis Scott, and DS2 by Future, there is really no end to what we were given. But one that has somehow slipped through the cracks is a 2013 album by A$AP Ferg. That project is his debut, Trap Lord.

13 tracks and just under an hour long, Ferg put together a great work of trap symphony. The production is expectedly heavy on the bass and aggressive trap percussion, but it had a grand feel to it all. One song that you cannot forget about is Work REMIX” featuring his A$AP Mob partner A$AP Rocky, French Montana, ScHoolboy Q, and Trinidad James. Every verse here brings so much character, especially Ferg’s which part of it can be found below.

A$AP FERG Needs More Respect

“Work REMIX” along with the rest of the tracklist, has aged very well. That is a true testament to how well thought out every detail is on this project. Other notable songs are “Shabba” with A$AP Rocky, and “Lord” with Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. Overall, the respect for this album and A$AP Ferg needs to increase because he provided so much for trap in a decade where so many seem to overshadow it.

What are your thoughts on the “Work REMIX” by A$AP Ferg? Do you think it is one of the best, if not the best, trap rap songs ever? Does Trap Lord as a whole need to be brought up in conversations as being a top-tier trap album? We want to hear what you have to say, so be sure to tell us all of your thoughts and opinions and put them in the comments section below. T.I. is a name in hip-hop that should be considered as one the most influential in the history of the genre. The Southern rap music scene might not be the same without him and his sophomore release Trap Muzik is all the proof you need. Released on August 18, 2003, it has now been 20 years since it came out and there are some classic hits that have aged like fine wine. One in particular is “Rubber Band Man.”

An interview with MTV revealed what the meaning behind the halo track is. T.I. said, “We used to wear rubber bands to signify how much money, how much blow we had.” He went on to explain the Rubber Band Man nickname further, “I would wear three rubber bands, and that would probably hold $5,000. If you anticipate making $20,000, you gonna have eight, nine rubber bands on both wrists.” This hit, along with many others is just one reason why he needs to be mentioned with the other greats in rap history.
