The Little Mermaid has made a splash at the box office. For Memorial Day weekend, the live-action versions of The Little Mermaid brought in $118 million over the holiday weekend. $96 million of that total came in the three-day frame.
According to Vareity, the film will be the fifth highest Memorial Day opening in history.
“It’s a classic,” said Tony Chambers, Disney’s head of distribution. “You ask a lot of women or men of my age and it’s ‘Little Mermaid’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ that rank as their favorite animated movie. It’s a story that takes them back to their respective childhoods and this movie is the perfect opportunity for a lot of people to pass that love on to the next generation.”
Following The Little Mermaid was Fast X at $28.7 million and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at $25.3 million.
The Little Mermaid is certainly not a flop for Disney. The opening weekend of the film was anticipated to generate a domestic box office revenue ranging from $120 million to $130 million. The movie premiered in the United States last week and features Halle Bailey as the titular character. It was expected to achieve Disney’s fourth highest-grossing opening weekend. That would have left it trailing behind Top Gun: Maverick, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. In the end, The Little Mermaid film pulled in around $117 million domestically. That makes it one of the most successful Memorial Day weekend releases of all time.
Back in 2019, Disney made an initial announcement regarding the selection of Halle Bailey for the lead role in their live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Unfortunately, the decision to cast a black woman sparked a wave of controversy. Halle’s community understandably celebrated the success of the talented 23-year-old actress. However, racists seized the opportunity to express their objections on social media, opposing the call for diversity. Yara Shadidi also faced a similar backlash when she secured the role of Tinkerbell in Peter Pan & Wendy. Nonetheless, both young actresses have admirably silenced their critics through their exceptional performances, showcasing their skills and talent.
Users Say “The Little Mermaid” Screening Video Only Hurts The Cause
In the video above, someone who attended a screening of The Little Mermaid had their viewing experience interrupted. A fight broke out in the middle of the film. It’s unclear what the altercation was about. One woman can be heard yelling at another saying that she asked her to politely stop doing something. What the other viewer was doing was not revealed in the video. Many took to the comments on the post by The Shade Room. According to them, the outlet should not have posted the video. In their eyes, it takes away from the triumph of the film.
In a recent interview with Glamour, Halle opened up about seeing videos of young black girls reacting to her as Ariel. “When I saw those for the first time, I just cried,” she told the magazine. “I was sobbing uncontrollably. The fact that these babies are looking at me and feeling the emotions that they’re feeling is a really humbling, beautiful thing.” The actress will no doubt continue to inspire more children for generations to come. Hopefully, situations like the one in the video above will not mar the success of the adaptation. What do you think of the video? Sound off in the comments below!
The Little Mermaid is expected to make between $120-$130 million dollars domestically over it’s opening weekend. The film, starring Halle Bailey, premiered in the U.S. yesterday. The Little Mermaid is projected to see Disney’s fourth highest-earning opening weekend, behind Top Gun: Maverick, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Disney believes the film should also bring in around $80 million overseas this weekend, bringing the total to around $200 million.
In an interview with Glamour, Bailey also recently shared her experience watching young black girls react to seeing her play Ariel. “When I saw [the videos] for the first time, I just cried,” she revealed. She went on to say, “I was sobbing uncontrollably. The fact that these babies are looking at me and feeling the emotions that they’re feeling is a really humbling, beautiful thing.”
Bailey also shared more about her relationship with DDG, amid recent rumors the pair had split. Bailey called the rapper her “prince charming,” adding that she thinks “the best thing about young love is that you’re able to continue to find yourself through this journey of loving somebody else.” The performer continued, “You’re discovering new parts of yourself and maybe things that you didn’t notice before about your heart.” “I feel like things change when love gets more involved in your life,” she revealed. “I have definitely discovered more within myself as a woman.…It’s a really cool thing to go through, but a transformative experience.”
She also shared her experiences dating in the public eye recently. She shared, “The biggest thing I’ve learned in dating when it comes to dating in the public eye, is that everybody’s gonna have an opinion about you, whether it’s good or bad.” Bailey added, “I’ve had this since I was younger. I think because I’ve grown up, kind of in the public eye, people think they have this sort of… I don’t know, that they can say what they feel about my life. Like they do with everyone in the public eye.” “I’ve realized, for me, I just go with my heart,” she revealed.
Disney initially announced the casting of Halle Bailey as the lead in their live-action remake of The Little Mermaid in 2019. Unfortunately, since Halle is a black woman, it ignited a firestorm of controversy. Her community understandably rejoiced at the success of the talented 23-year-old. However, racists took to social media to spew their objections towards the push for diversity. Yara Shadidi faced a similar backlash when she landed the role of Tinkerbell in Peter Pan & Wendy. However, both young actresses have skillfully silenced their critics with their exceptional performances.
After much anticipation, Bailey’s debut film finally premiered in Hollywood earlier this month, marking a significant milestone in her career. The general public has had to wait a bit longer to watch it. However, a select group of celebrity friends, including Offset, Chlöe Bailey, and Kelly Rowland, were personally invited to an exclusive early screening. Many influential figures were able to attend the premiere. Afterward, many took to Twitter to share their enthusiastic thoughts on The Little Mermaid.
Halle: “I Was Sobbing Uncontrollably”
With the release of The Little Mermaid drawing near, Halle Bailey is looking back at her remarkable journey, emotion-filled journey. Her audition for the lead role was reportedly so powerful that it brought everyone in the room to tears. The film has sparked many important discussions about representation. Over the last few months, Bailey’s resilience has shone through. Despite facing backlash, she found strength in her grandparents’ words of encouragement. They expressed how her portrayal would empower their community. They said she would inspire young black and brown girls to see themselves represented in a meaningful way. Their support has fueled Bailey’s determination to make a lasting impact through her role in the film.
In a recent interview with Glamour, Halle opened up about seeing videos of young black girls reacting to her as Ariel. “When I saw those for the first time, I just cried,” she told the magazine. “I was sobbing uncontrollably. The fact that these babies are looking at me and feeling the emotions that they’re feeling is a really humbling, beautiful thing.” The actress will no doubt continue to inspire more children when the film opens this week. Representation has been a big part of the conversation surrounding the film. Last year, Bailey revealed what her grandparents told her in response to racist backlash to her role. “It was an inspiring and beautiful thing to hear their words of encouragement,” she explained, “telling me, ‘You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little Black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you.’”
In a new cover story by Glamour, Bailey talked more about how happy she is to be able to inspire young Black girls by starring in the movie. “When I saw those for the first time, I just cried,” she told the magazine about viral videos of them reacting to her as Ariel. “I was sobbing uncontrollably. The fact that these babies are looking at me and feeling the emotions that they’re feeling is a really humbling, beautiful thing.”
Bailey also touched on what representation she’s experienced in media that inspired her, mentioning Anika Noni Rose in the 2009 animated The Princess and the Frog. “I know how much of that movie changed my whole perspective on life,” she explained. “Wow, this is possible. Black princesses are possible. We deserve to take up these spaces too.”
DDG sang along to one of Halle Bailey’s songs from her upcoming film, The Little Mermaid, during a recent live stream. In the clip, shared by The Neighborhood Talk on Instagram, DDG sings along to the song, “Part of Your World.” The track was featured in the original animated Disney film when it was sung by Jodi Benson.
It’s unclear exactly when DDG and Bailey began dating, but the two were spotted at Usher’s Las Vegas Residency in early 2022. They eventually made things Instagram official in March of that year.
The new video comes after Halle Bailey recently reaffirmed her commitment to the rapper amid rumors about their breakup. She explained that the rumors have caused her to set boundaries with her social media usage during a recent interview. “The biggest thing I’ve learned in dating when it comes to dating in the public eye, is that everybody’s gonna have an opinion about you, whether it’s good or bad” she reflected. “I’ve had this since I was younger. I think because I’ve grown up, kind of in the public eye, people think they have this sort of… I don’t know, that they can say what they feel about my life. Like they do with everyone in the public eye. But I’ve realized, for me, I just go with my heart.”
Bailey added: “It’s hard when you’re in the public eye because social media is also a part of your work, it’s a big part of what I do! I have to set healthy boundaries for myself, ‘cuz just like anyone, if you see all these people saying whatever they want about you, your life, what you choose to decide… That could take a toll on anyone, so I just have to choose to step aside and not look at any of that.”
DDG Singing To “The Little Mermaid”
The Little Mermaid will be hitting theaters next Friday, May 26. In addition to Bailey, the cast is composed of Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy.
On yesterday’s episode, Bailey delivered a performance of the iconic “Part Of Your World.” She wasn’t live in studio, but instead, Bailey took the stage at Disneyland in the dark, surrounded by blue, bioluminescent-looking lights for a gorgeous-looking pre-taped performance. It’s easy to see why people cried at her audition.

Bailey took to Twitter to share the video and offer some insight about what the performance was like, writing, “first time singing part of your world live since filming [crying emoji] [wave emoji] thank you @AmericanIdol for giving me the chance to do so on stage at disneyland ..singing vocals in freezing cold weather at 3am while park is closed is no joke but we did it! only 11 more days until you all can watch the film !”

Chloe Bailey just attended the premiere of her sister Halle’s new movie, The Little Mermaid. The sisters both walked the blue carpet at the event celebrating the release of the highly-anticipated film. Chloe looked stunning as usual, sporting a sparkling yellow dress with an opening in the front that showed off her toned physique. She also wore a lace front wig, which was a big change from her usual locs. Chloe posted about the event on Instagram afterward, where she referenced her close relationship with Halle. “The flounder to her ariel,” Chloe joked, likely talking about her bright yellow dress.
During an interview on the blue carpet, Chloe spoke to reporters about what the film could mean for the kids that watch it. “I get chills,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “To know that all of those beautiful girls will be able to see proper representation… whether you’re black or white or anything like that, you’ll be able to look at my sister and say, ‘I can be anything I want to be no matter what the world tells me is acceptable.’ There could not be a more perfect Ariel.” The event went off without a hitch, it seems. Chloe did struggle to get out of her premiere look, however.
Chloe’s Hairstylist Took The Night Off
In the video above, Chloe Bailey struggles with all her might to remove her lace front. It’s an endearing video that reminds us of the human side of celebrities. The clip was shared on Instagram, and in it, Chloe was very straightforward about her lack of wig knowledge. “As a girl with locs, I’m very new to the lace front community,” she said. She then talked about products that were recommended to her to remove the wig glue: alcohol and oil. “We’re going to see how to get this off because I’m not trying to rip my edges out,” Chloe said. After several attempts at removing the wig using only castor oil, the singer decided it was time for to try alcohol. After some time, it seemed to have worked like a charm.
In a repost by The Shade Room, fans took to the comment section to show love to Chloe and her sister, Halle. “Who is they mama, the fairy godmother?” one user said. “She raised them real good.” Another chimed in to agree, saying “You can tell the Bailey sisters were raised with love, attention, and the Lord.” Chloe certainly has the Lord, as she called on him several times while removing the wig. What do you think about Chloe’s blue carpet look? Let us know in the comment section!
When it was first announced that Disney had cast a Black woman, Halle Bailey, as the lead in their live-action The Little Mermaid remake, all hell broke loose. Of course, her community was happy to see the 23-year-old thriving. Unfortunately, racists couldn’t help but run their mouths on social media regarding the push for diversity. Yara Shadidi was met with a similar response when she earned the role of Tinkerbell in Peter Pan & Wendy. Nevertheless, both young actresses have since been shutting down critics with their work.
After months of waiting, Bailey’s first-ever film made its world premiere in Hollywood on Monday (May 8). It won’t be available to the general public until later this month, though a select group of celebrity friends such as Offset, Chlöe Bailey, and Kelly Rowland were all invited to the early screening. Other industry figures were in attendance as well, many of whom have already been sharing their thoughts regarding The Little Mermaid on Twitter.
“#TheLittleMermaid makes it pretty close to being the best live-action Disney movie,” one lucky earlier viewer shared with social media followers. “However, it still struggles in the villain department,” they admitted. “Halle Bailey IS Ariel and I had literal chills throughout her performance. This is a little mermaid retelling like you’ve never seen before.”
Elsewhere, Kelly Rowland also sang her young friend’s praises, writing, “‘The Little Mermaid’ is truly AN EPIC WATCH!!! The music in this movie!! FREAKINGGGGGGGWOWWWWW!! You laugh, you cry, you sing along!!” along with photos of her colourful outfit from the premiere. “I know I’m gonna be singing these songs for weeks to come!!!!!!” the Destiny’s Child alum declared.
Twitter Reacts to Disney’s Latest Live-Action Movie
Following the event, Halle Bailey shared beautiful photos of her designer dress, as well as some thoughts about her experience preparing for the premiere. “You guys, I’m so overwhelmed and overjoyed that this movie is almost here for you all to see,” she wrote on Monday afternoon. “This was the first premiere of the press run and I have been in tears and feeling oh so grateful,” the rising starlet further gushed. Keep scrolling to see more Twitter reactions, and let us know if you’ll be at the theatres on May 26th to catch the public debut of The Little Mermaid in the comments.
For Chlöe and Halle Bailey, the decision to go their separate ways and focus on their own careers hasn’t been easy. Nevertheless, it’s served the talented sisters greatly, with the older of the two delivering her debut solo album and an incredible tour, while the younger has been working on her acting chops. Rather than diving into the world of film with a small smart, the 23-year-old went all in as the lead in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid. Bailey and the company have both faced backlash over the decision to cast a Black woman as Ariel. Thankfully, the rising star hasn’t let it get under her skin too much.
In today’s internet age, avoiding hate is practically impossible. On the bright side, the “Do It” songstress has experienced plenty of heartwarming moments with young fans to make up for the bad. Most recently, she left Cardi B and Offset’s 4-year-old daughter, Kulture, feeling nothing short of starstruck when they crossed paths at TLM premiere on Monday (May 8) evening. In an adorable video that’s been circulating online, the young girl wraps her arms around Halle’s thighs in a sweet embrace before the Atlanta native crouched down to show her some love.
Both girls exchanged a sweet smile before hugging again, Kulture happily looking into the camera in the midst of Bailey’s embrace. As Uproxx notes, Cardi threw a mermaid-themed bash for her eldest’s last birthday, so it’s not entirely surprising to see her with such an affinity for Ariel. Elsewhere at the event, Offset’s other daughter, Kalea, joined her step-sister and Halle’s sister, Chlöe to pose for more photos on the red carpet.
Everyone in attendance was dressed to the nines, from the former Migos member’s pearl-clad jacket to the “Have Mercy” hitmaker’s vibrant yellow dress.
