The 2024 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards featured several notable moments. From Barbra Streisand’s Life Achievement Award speech to Pedro Pascal being swept up in Ciara’s beauty and even Billie Eilish signing superfan Melissa McCarthy’s face, the ceremony had something for all to enjoy.

But the most sincere moment occurred during the event’s preshow when Sterling K. Brown and his wife (fellow actor) Ryan Michelle Bathe paused their interview to praise Halle Bailey. As the couple spoke with Entertainment Tonight, Brown unabashedly fanned out over Bailey, specifically, her performance in 2023’s The Little Mermaid (directed by Rob Marshall). Watch the full clip below.

Brown displayed his inner thespian with an impromptu reenactment of Bailey’s recreating the mermaid’s infamous water hair flip. Although Bailey was there as a cast nominee for The Color Purple, she didn’t mind chatting about her box office smash as the fictional Princess Ariel. As Bailey relived the moment, Brown’s kind words began to sink in; she was nearly moving to tears.

She reposted the clip sharing a sweet note to the power couple.

Bailey didn’t leave with a trophy but still enjoyed herself, according to her post on X (formerly Twitter). “I was so honored to be nominated with my beautiful ‘Color Purple’ cast and family,” she wrote. “Such a fun night.”

Halle Bailey, Who Has Been In Rachel Zegler’s Shoes Before, Supports The ‘Snow White’ Star Amid Casting Criticism

Work on the live-action Snow White remake is underway, and some photos from the production have caused some drama online. The images, published by The Daily Mail last week, indicated that the roles of the seven dwarves will all, except for one, be played by average-sized people.

This ignited criticism over the movie’s casting and revived questioning about Rachel Zegler portraying the traditionally fair-skinned Snow White character. In particular, Ben Shapiro took exception to Zegler’s casting, saying in part, “[The word ‘white’] is literally in her name. That’s why she has her name. So I guess just to like, screw with people, they’re casting… Rachel Zegler’s a very talented person. It’s weird casting, you might say.”

Now, Halle Bailey, who herself faced some criticism when she was cast as Ariel in the remake of The Little Mermaid, showed support for Zegler.

Sharing some childhood photo of herself wearing various princess outfits, Zegler tweeted on July 15, “extremely appreciative of the love i feel from those defending me online, but please don’t tag me in the nonsensical discourse about my casting. i really, truly do not want to see it. so i leave you w these photos! i hope every child knows they can be a princess no matter what.”

Bailey quote-tweeted the post and added, “we love you so much [heart emoji] truly the perfect princess.” Zegler responded, “my sweetest girl [heart emoji] i love you always.”

“The Little Mermaid” Animated Show Greenlit By Disney

The Little Mermaid, Disney’s Halle Bailey-led live-action remake of the 1989 animated classic, has been a huge success. At the time of writing, the film has made just under $418 million worldwide since its May 24 release. Despite underwhelming performances in East Asian markets, Disney has yet another smash hit on their hands. By comparison, the original film made $211 million. Currently, The Little Mermaid is the 76th highest grossing Disney film of all time. However, the poor Asian perfomance may prevent the film from crossing the billion-dollar mark. All of Disney’s other live action remakes, The Lion King, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast, all made at least $1 Billion at the box office.

One response to this is rumors of more live-action remakes. Most recently, film outlets are reporting that Disney is moving forward with a live-action remake of Bambi. However, it appears that Disney is also eager to capitalize on the newfound appeal of its Little Mermaid IP. This means that fans are about to get a lot more of the reimagined character.

Little Mermaid Prequel Greenlit on Disney Junior

Multiple outlets have reported that Disney has greenlit Ariel, a new animated series that will serve as a prequel to The Little Mermaid. Aimed at a preschool audience and premiering on Disney Junior, Ariel will follow the eponymous mermaid princess during her early years. The show will reportedly include appearances from the likes of King Triton, Ursula, Flounder, and other fan-favorite characters.

The show is in the earliest stages of development and will be impacted by the ongoing WGA strike. Therefore, very few details are known about the project. However, due to the jump back in time, it’s unlikely that Halle Bailey will be returning to the project. It’s one of several projects that Disney has commissioned in line with the release of The Little Mermaid. A number of books depicting a Black Ariel have also been released. No release window for the show has been announced. Furthermore, as mentioned, unless work was already completed, the WGA strike will hold up development on this project. “The Little Mermaid” Asian Box Office Slump Blamed On Racism

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has received a warm reception in the United States. Critics have received the film fairly warmly, and it holds a 67% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Furthermore, critics have praised the performance of Halle Bailey while noting that the film as a whole is a fairly bland and visually underwhelming remake. However, audiences have loved the film. The Little Mermaid holds a 96% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has grossed $327 million worldwide.

However, the film has some underwhelming international markets, namely those in Asia. According to Endata, the film has grossed just $3.7 million in Mainland China, which counts as the second-largest box office in the world. Similarly, the film has grossed just $4.4 million in South Korea. Meanwhile, the film is yet to open in Japan but is expected to suffer from the same issues. Additionally, these muted figures have been attributed to a problem that has plagued the film time and time again.

Anti-Black Racism Blamed For “The Little Mermaid” Slump

China and South Korea both harbor long histories of racial discrimination. Anti-Black racism has been common in China since the 1970s, when the nation began its expansion of financial diplomacy into Africa. Furthermore, much like how the rest of the world blamed China for COVID-19, China in turn saw a spike in anti-Black discrimination. Meanwhile, South Korea is infamous for a culture of denying service to non-Koreans. Furthermore, research has shown that Black individuals are more likely to experience overt racism than white individuals.

These sentiments appear to be fueling the cold reception to The Little Mermaid. On the Chinese film review website Douban, users have rated the film as a 5.1 out of 10. Meanwhile, several reviews left on the review site and box office tracker Maoyan made direct and discriminatory references to Bailey’s skin color. Similar trends have been observed in South Korea, where the Instagram hashtag ‘NotMyAriel’ has trended numerous times. Furthermore, Japanese film-goers have also expressed a cool reception ahead of the film’s June 9 premiere.

Serena Williams’ Daughter Olympia Overjoyed After Receiving Halle Bailey ‘The Little Mermaid’ Doll

Halle Bailey Stars in 'The Little Mermaid' Full Trailer

The Little Mermaid is currently the biggest movie across the globe. One of the fans of the film is Serena Williams’ five-year-old daughter, Olympia, who received the Halle Bailey “Ariel” doll and exploded in joy.

The moment was captured by Williams as her husband, Alexis Ohanian passed the doll to their daughter.

The Little Mermaid has made a splash at the box office. For Memorial Day weekend, the live-action versions of The Little Mermaid brought in $118 million over the holiday weekend. $96 million of that total came in the three-day frame.

According to Vareity, the film will be the fifth highest Memorial Day opening in history.

“It’s a classic,” said Tony Chambers, Disney’s head of distribution. “You ask a lot of women or men of my age and it’s ‘Little Mermaid’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ that rank as their favorite animated movie. It’s a story that takes them back to their respective childhoods and this movie is the perfect opportunity for a lot of people to pass that love on to the next generation.”

Following The Little Mermaid was Fast X at $28.7 million and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at $25.3 million.

Halle Bailey Watches “The Little Mermaid” In Theatres Wearing A Disguise

Before she took on the role of Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, Halle Bailey was best known for her vocal talents alongside her big sister Chloe in their R&B duo. Their debut project, Ungodly Hour brought them massive success, but we have yet to hear a sophomore effort from the siblings. Instead, the older of the two has been focusing on her solo career with In Pieces and a movie called Praise This. At the same time, the younger has been gearing up for her feature film debut which finally took place last week.

Halle has unfortunately faced considerable racist backlash for taking the traditionally white role as a Black woman. Nevertheless, her performance proves that she was the perfect pick for the role, as many critics have already stated. While she likely already knows the script like the back of her hand, the 23-year-old wanted to get the authentic theatre experience. In order to keep a low profile, she donned sunglasses and a COVID-19 face mask to conceal her identity.

Rather than sticking with Ariel’s signature red style from the film, Bailey also opted to sport thick twists of hair, making her almost more mistakable for Chloe. As Uproxx notes, she appears to have been viewing The Little Mermaid at Americana at Brand’s AMC in Glendale, which is an area that celebrities have been known to frequent. Based on the TikTok she posted this week, the “Do It” songstress doesn’t appear to have broken her cover.

Elsewhere on social media, the Atlanta native shared an adorable video of her and her boyfriend DDG exchanging countless smooches following the conclusion of the worldwide Disney media tour with co-stars and executives who helped the long-awaited film come to fruition. ‘The Little Mermaid’ Halle Bailey Went Undercover To Watch Her Movie In The Theater With A Truly Laughable Disguise

Movie stars have always donned disguises to engage in everyday activities like shopping and going to the movies but usually, it only works when they go to extremes like Drake once did to attend a friend’s court appearance (he says even then, people still recognized him). However, The Little Mermaid star Halle Bailey recently got away with a simple-but-effective one herself when she went to a public theater to watch her film debut by herself, even when she stopped to get a video of the massive, wall-spanning video poster touting the film in the lobby.

The “costume” in question consisted of a pair of dark sunglasses and a face mask, which were apparently all it took to obscure her recognizable features, even as she passed by fans taking selfies with the poster screen. It probably helps that her signature locs had been restyled into thicker twists and colored brown as opposed to the vivid red of her character. For what it’s worth, the theater appears to be the AMC at Americana at Brand in Glendale, which isn’t so far from Hollywood that celebrity appearances are very unusual, so if anyone did actually recognize her, they were probably at least a little bit more chill about it.
