The Kansas City Chiefs squared off with the lowly Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon (September 24) at home. The fans had plenty to be happy about as the Chiefs ran roughshod over the visitors, decimating them 41-10. Patrick Mahomes found Travis Kelce seven times for 69 yards and a touchdown. He continues to prove why he might be the greatest tight end of all time. While he always shows out, one special fan might have given him a little extra motivation.
Taylor Swift was mentioned a ton throughout the broadcast on FOX since she was sitting alongside Travis’ mother, Donna. The two were repping him in their suite as they got to see the second Chief’s victory. Tons of headlines have surrounded the possible couple and one recently states that the two are seeing where things go. A close source to T Swift says that she thinks Travis is “very charming” but it is nothing serious at the moment. The NFL star is also hoping to see her more and there is one Swiftie who thinks this will be a big deal if they make it official.

According to some audio obtained by TMZ Sports, Bill Belichick spoke on the Greg Hill Show about the pairing. The Patriots head coach has attended a Swift concert before and he is a huge fan of hers. So much so, that he thinks Kelce will be making the biggest catch of his career. Belichick told the show’s hosts, “I would say Travis Kelce’s had a lot of big catches in his career. This would be the biggest.” It seems like it is heading towards something more serious as TMZ Sports also got a photo of them heading to dinner in Travis’ old-school convertible.

The superstar tight end was, rather surprisingly, not a huge part of the offensive explosion in the first half, but he eventually got in on the fun in the third quarter as the Bears somehow lost track of him in the back of the end zone to let the Chiefs go up 41-0 on them. Naturally, the FOX cameras cut quickly to Taylor Swift in the suite and captured her extremely fired up, chest bumping the guy next to her and then very clearly yelling “LET’S F**KING GO!” as she celebrated Kelce getting a touchdown catch.

Afterwards, the folks in the production truck decided to continue the new tradition of broadcasts dropping Swift references for Kelce touchdowns by posting a “The Story Of Us” graphic after Kelce and Patrick Mahomes set a new Chiefs franchise record for touchdown combinations.
Aside from having to watch Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears attempt to play offense, it was a pretty great day for Taylor at the Chiefs game as she got to watch Kansas City’s offense in full force and see Travis do what he does best in the red zone.

The process began many years back, when Swift was just making playlists in her post-1989 era and including songs from The National, Bon Iver, and others who would go on to intertwine themselves with the pop star. And it peaked this last weekend, as The National returned to their hometown for the appropriately named Homecoming Festival. It was not the first time they’d thrown such an event, though this one was in some way a makeup for their canceled 2020 edition that was meant to celebrate 10 years of High Violet, one of their most beloved releases.
The influence could be seen among the fans, particularly those who made friendship bracelets spelling out songs from High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me, the other album whose anniversary would be honored over the weekend. And while there weren’t fans dressing up like song lyrics — cherry trees? alligators? a swarm of bees? — fans of all ages did adorn their favorite National merch representing the 20+ year history of the band. And, mirroring what Taylor Swift managed to do a couple times on her Eras Tour, The National let the IRL fans be the first to know that they had an album of new material dropping. (The National didn’t simply announce, either, they even had autographed vinyl copies of Laugh Track ready to be purchased days before the record was set to hit streaming, giving their diehards a first-listen opportunity and a chance for rare merch.)
It’s not surprising that The National’s influence on Swift, which includes Aaron Dessner working as a songwriting and production partner on her last three albums and the band guesting on the track “Coney Island,” has been mutual. Swift, for her part, appeared on songs for both The National and their offshoot Big Red Machine. When The National were canceling their own Homecoming Festival in 2020, Swift was having to squash plans for her Lover Festival. Heck, even The National’s speedy succession of First Two Pages Of Frankenstein and Laugh Track this year recalls Swift’s pandemic prolificacy with her offerings of Folklore and Evermore.

The scale is obviously not the same and the differences between the artist are plentiful, but there is something to say about how Taylor Swift has transformed the music industry and how artists going forward can borrow from her learnings. But the biggest parallel comes from the fan service that each provides. Regardless of the size of the audience, creating experiential, unique opportunities for those diehard fans is the most lasting and impactful way to maintain them. It’s the kind of move that will cause devotees to spend their free time crafting letters onto string, or spend their vacation money for a flight to the midwest to see not only their favorite band, but likeminded artists like Patti Smith, Pavement (playing the final show of their reunion tour), The Walkmen, Weyes Blood, Julia Jacklin, Bartees Strange, Snail Mail, and many others.

For their part, the moment was not lost on The National. Those hoping to hear the band wax poetic about how High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me impacted their lives on an emotional or spiritual level were left wanting, but that also isn’t typically how the band expresses themselves. Where they did not hold back was in expressing their love of their home city, using their two nights of headlining sets to shout out all sorts of Cincy-centric references, and even receiving the key to the city from the (surprisingly hot?) mayor.
They also made sure to discuss the significance of the other bands on the bill, be it talking about how seeing The Walkmen in their NYC heyday inspired the writing of “Available,” which they then performed for the first time in a decade, or dedicating “Lemonworld” to Bartees Strange, who they noted has his own excellent cover of the song. They spoke about their heroes Pavement before playing “So Far Around The Bend,” a rarity that references a desire for the California band to reunite, released shortly before they actually did in 2010. And they spoke about playing “Afraid Of Everyone” for the first time in 2009 in front of Patti Smith and R.E.M. leader Michael Stipe (who traveled to the festival with Patti and took in many acts side-stage), noting how important it was to get their crucial approval in 2009 and then welcoming Patti to the stage to duet “I Need My Girl.” Many of the acts there felt not just curated as artists their fans might like, but ones whose stories are intertwined with their own, parts of an extended family that Weyes Blood and Snail Mail and the others were now invited to.

The Walkmen proving just how sturdy and timeless their catalog is, and while “The Rat” rightfully gets its due as one of the best songs of this century by anyone, I nominate “In The New Year” as the peak of their achievements, which is the perfect song to ring in January 1st with, 15 years running.
Snail Mail yelling “Pavement” between songs, encapsulating the still-confounding appeal of the MOST Gen-X band appealing to a wide swath of Gen-Z women.
Pavement ending their reunion 2.0 without the fatigue that seemed to come at the end the last time around. They said it will be a long while until they perform again, but their commitment to celebrating their whole catalog and virtually delving into jam-band territory on this incarnation should be used as a playbook for how band reunions can thrive and remain special.
Patti Smith just being Patti Smith, complete with Ginsberg readings, tributes to her departed friends, and a few genuine festival-ready hits in the form of “People Have The Power,” “Gloria,” and “Because The Night.”
Weyes Blood ending her set in the same way that Babylon ends. Both rule, don’t @ me.

And while The National’s two performances were notable beyond the full-album plays — only repeating a handful of tracks each night — it was the many little details that made the event feel like a true gift. The “American Water” branded sparkling water cans; the archival shirts and posters on sale; the First Two Pages Of Frankenstein mannequin head selfie station. Even some dude who kept emerging from backstage with random catering food to pass out, including PB&Js, bags of chips, and pickles. In all, there was little to take the focus away from the music and community, with everything striking as a solid 20% nicer and more thoughtful than it had to be. (I would be remiss to not mention my only major gripe with one of The National’s tour photographers: It’s not good to stand on stage and obstruct the audience’s view. People were getting very upset in the crowd because of this. Just a note I hope someone passes along. Whatever shot you are trying to get, it’s not worth it if it ruins someone’s favorite song for them.)

We live in an era where most festivals feel like you are fighting the elements, be it weather or crowds or ticket agencies or whatever else — just ask Taylor Swift fans. Swift in turn gave her fans the show of a lifetime with the last tour, as a thank you for the difficulty in being a fan in 2023, an honoring of the wealth of material she has released, and an acknowledgment for all that we’ve been through in the past few years. For its part, Homecoming also felt like this, living up to its name even for those who traveled to be there. It had a level of comfort that doesn’t exist at most events, where the audience reveled in like-minded solidarity and the curators put the audience’s needs at the forefront. So, it is here that I present my alternate headline for this article, which was scrapped because, well, it looks psychotic: There Is No Place Like (The National’s) Home(coming Festival).

2023 has already been a year full of unexpected but epic musical collaborations. It seems as though that trend is only continuing over the coming months. There are several huge albums still slated to drop, including Drake’s For All The Dogs and Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2. The Young Money legends are due to link up on the former. Elsewhere, the Queen of Rap has been dropping hints about what we can expect to hear on the latter.
Besides working on her own highly anticipated LP, Minaj is also be rumoured to teaming up with a seriously unexpected artist – Taylor Swift. The two artists have formed a friendship over the years, though they have yet to join forces in the studio. After seeing what appears to be hints surfacing on social media, however, both the Swifties and the Barbz feel as though that could soon change. As Billboard reports, searching the country-turned-pop sensation’s name on Google will cause one of 89 different puzzles to pop up allowing them to “unlock Taylor’s vault.”
One of the most noteworthy clues to come from the fun game is both Swift and Minaj’s zodiac sign – Sagittarius. Just last week, the Speak Now artist called the mother of one her “favourite Sagittarius” during the MTV VMAs. On top of that, at the end of August, Minaj tweeted “Fighting the urge to say Sagittarius tingz right now so bad” when celebrating a new milestone set by her and her rumoured collaborator. If released, the joint song will likely appear on 1989 (Taylor’s Version).

According to the publication, a Swiftie noticed she was wearing Travis Kelce’s birthstone, which is an opal. For all of the astrologists out there, his birthday is October 5, making him a Libra. Additionally, they reported that the pendant the opal is a part of represents love. This is only going to get more people talking and gossiping. The publication says that a source told another news site, The Messenger, that Kelce and Swift were spotted together. “She saw him when she was in NYC a few weeks ago.” Both of them have not publicly announced a relationship yet, but that did not stop this NFL play-by-play announcer from getting in on the fun. Ian Eagle, who has been an entertaining sports figure for years now, always knows how to fit in a good pun. That is what he did during the Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars game this past weekend. Kelce scored the final touchdown of the game to give them the win and Eagle was most likely waiting to use this joke all day. Ice Spice has been one of rap music’s breakout stars this year, so it’s no surprise that she was right at the center of the MTV VMAs earlier this week. Because she was sitting next to Taylor Swift, who won numerous awards throughout the night the cameras were fixated on her even more than you’d expect. On particular picture of her and Taylor sharing a hug started making the rounds online. The main reason for that particular picture going viral had to do with Spice’s body, something even she was impressed by.
In a quote tweet of the pic Ice Spice proved that she can still surprise herself. “damn I aint kno I was that thick hold on,” she said in response to the pic. That caused the pic to go even more viral with her quote tweet alone garnering 418k likes in just a day. The VMAs turned out to be a pretty big night for Spice all around. Beyonce has been making headline news all summer with her Renaissance tour and it seems like she’ll continue to even after the tour wraps up. That’s why USA Today is looking for somebody whose entire job is to keep up with the mega-star. According to Page Six, the reporter they choose will be asked to “chronicle the music, fashion, cultural and economic influence of Beyoncé.” Included in the job beyond just reporting on Queen B will be covering her impact on both music and business. The detailed job description also makes references to her impact on social issues, her fan community the Bey-Hive, and her continued expansion across all mediums beyond music.
This comes just a few days after another listing grabbed people’s attention. USA Today’s parent company Gannett posted an ad looking for a Taylor Swift reporter. That role seemingly looks for someone to do a lot of the same things following not just Taylor’s news, but her impact and her fanbase the Swifties. It’s probably no coincidence that both these hires are coming at the tail end of major tours for both Beyonce and Taylor. The “Eras” and Renaissance tours have been making major waves all summer for the spectacular caliber of their performances and the major names in attendance.

Beyonce recently celebrated her birthday in style on the Renaissance tour. Not only did her fans gift her a perfect execution of her “ENERGY,” but she got a rare appearance from Diana Ross to singer her happy birthday. Ross explained afterward that she was merely paying Bey back for singing her happy birthday at her extravagant 75th birthday party a few years ago.
Queen B continued her birthday celebration on Instagram when she shared some pictures of a more private celebration she had. As summer comes to an end, music fans everywhere have one question on their mind: What was the song of summer? In 2023, the song of summer can be defined using all sorts of criteria: What was popular on streaming apps? What went viral on TikTok? What was inescapable on the radio?
Today (September 5), Billboard dropped their Top Songs Of The Summer 2023 list, which factors in all of this data (specifically, chart data from June 10 to September 9).
At No. 10 is Gunna, who made a return to music this year after being released from jail on racketeering charges. His latest single, “F*kumean” has proven to be a hit, as his return has proven polarizing.
Occupying spots 9 and 8 are SZA, with her hit singles, “Kill Bill” and “Snooze,” respectively. Also taking two consecutive spots is Taylor Swift. At No. 7, Swift pops in with her remix of “Karma,” which features Ice Spice. At No. 6 is “Cruel Summer,” which was originally released in 2019 on Swift’s seventh studio album, Lover.
Lil Durk and J. Cole came in at No. 5, with their collaboration, “All My Life.”
“Flowers” by Miley Cyrus, which was released this past January, continues to be an anthem for the summertime. This one came in at No. 4. Rema‘s remix of “Calm Down,” which features Selena Gomez, earned the No. 3 spot.
This summer proved to be a country music summer, as Luke Combs‘ cover of Tracy Chapman‘s “Fast Car” made its way over to No. 2. And at the top spot is Morgan Wallen‘s “Last Night.”
