Kodak Black’s Rise From The Streets To Hip-Hop Stardom

Say what you will, but Kodak Black has emerged as a generational voice in hip-hop. Hailing from Pompano Beach, Florida, the self-proclaimed “Project Baby” ushered in a new era in hip-hop, one that reflected his upbringing in the Sunshine State and created a blueprint for the artists that followed. However, his career hasn’t gone without controversies. From his support for Donald Trump to his latest “Shaka Laka” collaboration with Tekashi 6ix9ine alongside Yailin La Mas Viral, Kodak evidently has no issues going against the grain.

However, that hardly scratches the surface regarding his contentious presence in the culture. Since emerging into the limelight, he has faced a number of legal issues, including charges related to sexual assault and gun possession, that have derailed his career. Regardless, his influence extends to the biggest artists in the game, like Cardi B, who cited the Florida native as the inspiration behind “Bodak Yellow.” Add to the fact that hip-hop’s Big 3 – Drake, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar – have extended their co-signs to his talent.

Early Life & Musical Beginnings

Born Dieuson Octave (later changing his name to Bill Kahan Kapri) on June 11, 1997, Kodak Black was raised in the Golden Acres housing projects in Pompano Beach. Exposed to a world of violence and crime at an early age, he began rapping during elementary school. Eventually, he began recording music at a local trap house in his area while reading dictionaries and thesauruses to boost his vocabulary.

Unfortunately, during these times, he also got caught up in criminal activities, from breaking and entering to fights. Still, by age 12, he began establishing his name in his local area. As J-Black, he joined a rap group called Brutal Youngnz and, later, The Kolyons. However, his 2013 mixtape, Project Baby, released through Sniper Gang and Dollaz N Dealz, established him as a force of his own.

By 2014, Kodak had already released his second mixtape, Heart Of The Projects, boasting two of his earliest hits, “Skrt” and “No Flockin.” The latter would, in fact, influence Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” and earned Yak writing credits on the song, while the former earned critical praise. However, Drake later co-signed the song in an Instagram video where he danced along to the record. Afterward, OVO Sound Radio included “SKRT” in one of their episodes, helping Kodak Black transform into one of the most exciting voices in hip-hop. Even though people like Earl Sweatshirt criticized Drake for supposedly “vulturing” off of new talent, the relationship between Drizzy and Kodak remains strong to this day.

If there have ever been doubts surrounding Boosie Badazz’s influence on the next generation, look no further than Kodak Black. While the two may be in the midst of a spat these days surrounding Yak’s collaboration with 6ix9ine, it’s hard to deny the influence Boosie’s had on him, not only through their connection to the South but Yak’s ability to highlight the localized sound of his area and the realist portrayals of his neighborhood.

This, by extension, inspired plenty of other artists that followed to similarly share their respective stories without compromising their penmanship. Projects like 2015’s Institution, 2017’s Painting Pictures, and of course, Dying To Live in 2017 highlighted Kodak Black’s ability to preach the street’s sermon without sounding holier-than-thou. His unapologetically youthful personality established his position on the XXL Freshman list in 2017 audiences, while his emotive tracks revealed a deep sense of pain and struggle. Kodak’s music expressed the resilience and determination that defined his journey from the projects to prominence.

The rich influence on Southern hip-hop extends into Kodak Black’s production choices, as well. Kodak Black has proved to be a sonic chameleon with effortless versatility. His catalog draws an evident influence from 90s Southern hip-hop, from twangy guitars to the bluesy progressions found in his production choices.

Controversies & Setbacks

There’s no shortage of controversies surrounding Kodak Black. In 2017, he went on Instagram Live while a woman performed fellatio on him. A few months later, he faced accusations of colorism after he stated that he “don’t really like Black girls” like that while also claiming that he preferred women with a lighter complexion because they’re easier to break down. Then, following the news of Nipsey Hussle’s death, he suggested waiting “a whole year” before trying to pursue sexual relations with the late rapper’s longtime partner Lauren London. Following the backlash, Kodak later apologized. In addition, he also caught significant flack in recent times after he received a pardon from Donald Trump during the last days of his presidency. Although Yak managed to get his sentence commuted, his fans didn’t agree with his alignment and support for the former president.

Kodak Black has and continues to face several legal issues throughout his career. In his teenage years, he spent time in a youth detention center. In 2015, he faced charges related to robbery and false imprisonment. He also served time for misdemeanor drug charges. However, his most significant charge has been linked to allegations of sexual assault.

In 2020, the rapper pleaded guilty to firearms charges after he was detained at the Canadian-American border. A year prior, he was arrested for providing false information on a form related to a gun purchase. Although Trump later commuted his 2020 conviction, he returned home to face the alleged sexual assault trial. He took a plea bargain for a lesser charge of assault and battery and received an 18-month probation sentence.

Yak is still facing challenges with the legal system, recently facing charges of trafficking oxycodone and possession of a controlled substance. This came after police pulled him over in Florida over tinted windows. Police claimed they discovered $75K in cash and oxycodone pills.

Despite facing numerous setbacks in his career, his presence remains prevalent in the culture. From controversial statements to hit records like “Zeze” and “Super Gremlin,” Kodak Black is an unstoppable entity in the rap game. His undeniable influence continues to touch the underground and radio, even if not widely recognized. Regardless, Kodak Black remains one of the most consistent and refreshing artists in hip-hop, which is why people like Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole have shown him love in the past.

Kodak Black Speaks From The Heart On “No Love For A Thug”

It’s been a year filled with ups and downs for Kodak Black. Though he recently entered a rehab facility and faced some issues with the law recently, the Florida native has a few things to look forward to these days. He enrolled at Arizona State University where he aims to earn his degree, though he hasn’t revealed his major yet. However, that doesn’t mean Yak’s neglected his fans. The “Zeze” rapper’s unloaded a few singles since the beginning of the year including his collab with Gucci Mane, “King Snipe” and “My Lil Sh*t” ft. Syko Bob.

Though no plans for a new album have been announced yet, it seems Yak is well on his way to following up Kutthroat Bill Vol. 1 soon. The “Super Gremlin” artist slid through with the release of his new single, “No Love For A Thug” this morning. Kodak Black collides with Lbeats for his latest offering, which shows a more vulnerable side. Over mournful piano chords and slow-burning 808s, Yak shares a soul-bearing offering where he divulges his deepest thoughts.

Kodak Black’s Introspection Comes Out On New Single

With an introspective outlook on the world, the rapper’s new single finds him grappling with a harrowing reality. He mournfully details the loss of his friends and family within the song’s opening bars before delving into the dichotomy between having one foot in the streets and the other in the rap game. Ultimately, it sounds like a cry for help at his loneliest; a search for genuine love in a world full of snakes and opportunists. In the second verse, Kodak reflects on heartbreak.

The release of “No Love For A Thug” comes just before he headlines the 2023 Black Spring Break in Biloxi. Yak is expected to touch the stage on Saturday at the Coliseum. The show also includes performances from Nardo Wick, EST Gee, Fynesse 2 Times, and Gloss Up. Hopefully, Yak will also perform his latest single during his upcoming performance. Check out Kodak Black’s “No Love For A Thug” above and sound off with your thoughts in the comments.

Kodak Black Artist Syko Bob Gets 5-Year Prison Sentence For Gun Possession

Authorities just sentenced Syko Bob, signed to Kodak Black’s Sniper Gang collective, to five years behind bars. Moreover, the Florida rapper (real name Cambrel Smart) pleaded guilty to a charge of gun possession back in December of 2022. While not many details surrounding this case came out, it followed a January 2022 traffic stop at around 3:00 a.m. During this pull-over for speeding on I-75 in Collier County, Florida, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper found a bag of marijuana and a loaded gun.

Furthermore, HipHopDX discovered jail record copies showing alleged charges of a DUI, carrying a concealed gun, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, and possession of a weapon or ammo by a convicted felon. As of writing this article, Kodak Black has yet to respond to these developments on social media. However, given their close collaboration, hopefully the label boss is supporting his artist in any way possible through this tough time. Unfortunately, it’s not the most dangerous headline Syko’s had to face.

Syko Bob, Kodak Black Signee, Sentenced To Five Years In Prison

To elaborate, Bob was one of a few targets of a drive-by shooting in April of 2021, which assumedly targeted them directly. According to reports from The Sun Sentinel, police claimed the 29-year-old and two other men drove around Lauderhill, Florida at the time of the attack. Then, a black BMW drove close by and shot at the group. Car crashes ensued as both vehicles tried to move quickly, with someone in Syko’s car allegedly shooting back. What’s more is that the vehicles disappeared by the time police responded, and so they went to see the three victims in the hospital, who were rushed there by bystanders.

According to Lt. Michael Santiago, Syko and his crew “refused to cooperate with the investigation and provided no details on the events.” The Sniper Gang MC took to Instagram Live to let fans know he survived unscathed. “Please stop talking about ‘get well’ when s**t ain’t wrong,” he expressed. “Don’t send me s**t about no ‘get well’ no more when s**t ain’t happen to me.” Regardless, log back into HNHH for the latest news and updates on Syko Bob and Kodak Black.

Kodak Black & Syko Bob Connect On “My Lil Sh*t”

Kodak Black is building the Sniper Gang team up these days. Though his label’s faced many ups and downs since its inception, it appears that much of Yak’s efforts in recent times have been put towards re-establishing his label. Projects like Sniper Gang Presents Syko Bob & Snapkatt: Nightmare Babies allowed Yak’s artists to shine through his own name. Though both Syko Bob and Snapkatt delivered stand-out performances, the inclusion of “Super Gremlin” and “Killin The Rats” undoubtedly helped attract more eyes.

Syko Bob has continued to keep his foot on the gas since the project’s release, though we haven’t received a full-length project from him since 2021’s Syk The Snipe Vol. 1. He came through with a string of releases throughout 2022 including “Civilized” and “Sumthin To Believe” as his profile grew. Though he’s currently incarcerated, it appears that Yak and the Sniper Gang crew are keeping his name alive with their latest release.

Syko Bob – My Lil Shit Ft. Kodak Black

This week, Sniper Gang unveiled the latest from Syko Bob, “My Lil Shit” ft. Kodak Black. This time, the two dish out an unconventional banger that delves into loyalty and romance. Youngin’ Chriso cooks up a chilling instrumental that boasts icy piano keys that clash with bluesy guitar accents. Meanwhile, Syko Bob and Kodak Black reminisce about holding it down for their love interests during the worst times.

“My Lil Shit” is another solid example of Syko Bob’s talents that carry the gritty storytelling of the Southern legends that came before him. Meanwhile, Kodak Black continues to prove that he’s one of the most consistent rappers in the game, and has been since he emerged. Even with Syko Bob’s incarceration, it appears that there could be even more music in the stash that Kodak could be readying to unload at some point soon. Check their new collab below.

Quotable Lyrics
I’m sensitive about you, my n***a sensitive ‘bout me
A bitch say something crazy, my n***a tearin’ up the street
I’m sensitive ‘bout you, they say you for the street
Tell me what street she from so I could tear it up

Kodak Black Receives Custom “Sniper Gang” Sneakers

Kodak Black is one of the biggest artists in the rap game. Ever since his XXL Freshman List appearance in 2016, Kodak has continued to evolve. Overall, fans love him, and that is not going to change. One could even say he has one of the most dedicated fanbases out there.

If you have been following Kodak, you know that he is constantly repping “Sniper Gang.” For those who may not know, this is Kodak’s record label. He is constantly talking about the label on his songs, and he is always adding to the roster. Additionally, there is a whole line of “Sniper Gang” merch.

Kodak Black Gets New Shoes

According to a TikTok from @markoterzo which was reposted by DJ Akademiks, you can see that Kodak got himself some brand-new shoes. However, these aren’t any old regular shoe. Instead, he got himself a custom pair of kicks that look like some sort of Nike Air Force 1 Low spoof.

As you will eventually see, these customs are meant to pay homage to “Sniper Gang.” Firstly, we get a grey camo upper which fits into the whole military aesthetic. Lastly, instead of a Nike swoosh, there is a graphic of a sniper rifle. Kodak was very impressed with this custom, and you can tell he is eager to wear them.

Overall, it is a dope shoe that serves its purpose quite nicely. For now, it remains to be seen if any other member of “Sniper Gang” will be receiving these. Perhaps Kodak may even start selling these on the “Sniper Gang” merch store. After all, there are plenty of fans who would be happy to cop these.

Let us know what you think of these shoes, in the comments section down below. Additionally, keep it locked to HNHH for the latest news from around the sneaker world.
