Saweetie Encourages Female Athletes To ‘Get It Girl’ As Champion’s New Culture Consultant

Saweetie is hip-hop’s undisputed queen of brand partnerships. Sure, Megan Thee Stallion and Doja Cat have fast-food deals, but Saweetie’s the one who kicked it all off with the McDonald’s meal inspired by her viral favorite food concoctions. She’s also got deals with Crocs (a co-sponsorship with Hidden Valley Ranch, also inspired by her revelation she likes to apply the dressing to more than just salad), MAC Cosmetics, and Amazon. So it comes as no surprise that she announced a new one this week, this time tapping into her history as a multi-sport athlete.

Saweetie is now Champion’s first-ever “Global Culture Consultant,” appearing in the sports apparel brand’s “Get It Girl” campaign (named for the Saweetie song of the same name, which also appears in a Beats By Dre ad) and throwing a spotlight on 12 collegiate athletes who have the “confidence to play by their own rules and look good doing it.” The women featured in the campaign are receiving more than just the look, too; Champion is providing access to Champion executives as mentors of entertainment, marketing, and media as well as sports.

“My relationship with Champion runs deep, as an athlete and lover of streetwear,” Saweetie said in a press release. “It’s been a go-to brand since high school! This campaign and partnership hit me on a personal level and I couldn’t be prouder to help all my sporty-icy girls out there feel empowered with self-love and confidence. When you feel good wearing Champion, the sky’s the limit.”

The athletes in the inaugural “Champion Circle” represent more than seven colleges and universities around the country and compete in a variety of sports such as basketball, cheerleading, and track and field.

Fans Can’t Believe Saweetie’s Mom Isn’t Actually Her Sister In Stunning New Photos

This past weekend, Saweetie was honored with the Game Changer Award at Billboard‘s 14th annual Women In Music event in Inglewood. While the Bay Area rapper behind “My Type” and “Best Friend” also performed the new track “Closer”with HER at the event, it was her date for the evening who had everyone talking.

Saweetie’s mom, Trinidad Valentin, actually presented the Game Changer Award to her daughter. Before the show, Saweetie posted a series of selfies on her Instagram and her Twitter accounts of her and Valentin’s look for the evening. It didn’t take long for social media to be ablaze and in disbelief that her Mom looked very much like she could’ve been her sister.

“Momma ate her up. Also if you told me that saweetie’s mom was a secret older sister of Jhene Aiko I would definitely believe you,” one user said, while another replied on Twitter, “Your mom!? If you said your sister I so would have believed you.” “Yall look like sisters. Not mom and daughter,” said one Instagram commenter. Another simply cited how they both looked stunning with, “She literally get it from her mama, beautiful!”

The caption on Saweetie’s post says “mahal kita mamaaa,” which in Tagalog means “I love you mom.” It’s a nod to Saweetie’s Filipino heritage from her mother’s side. Check out the photos on Saweeties’s Instagram below.

Doja Cat, HER, And Saweetie Perform At The 2022 Billboard Women In Music Event

Last night, the 14th annual Billboard Women In Music event was held at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California to honor women in the music industry who have made significant strides or impacts in the past year. The event, which made its return after being canceled last year, awarded such honors as Woman Of The Year, Impact Award, Powerhouse Award, Innovator Award, Trailblazer Award, and Executive Of The Year. As with many awards events, the Women In Music conference also featured live performances from many of its honorees, including Doja Cat, HER, Saweetie, and more.

For Doja Cat’s stripped-down performance of “Alone” from her 2021 album Planet Her, the singer and rapper appeared in a hot pink cloak gown accompanied by piano and light strings on the darkened stage. Beginning without percussion, the instrumentation featured a slow build that never quite resolved, giving an understated appeal to Doja’s usual bombastic onstage antics.

Meanwhile, Saweetie performed her new song “Closer” — sans collaborator H.E.R. — keeping the “Icy flight attendant” aesthetic of the song’s video alive for the stage. In this case, Saweetie and her dancers wore bedazzled gold uniforms as they performed some extremely “disco queen” choreography perfect for the song’s ’70s dance vibe.

Saweetie’s fellow Filipino-American performer HER, meanwhile, delivered an acoustic take on her song “Fate.”

You can watch the performances above or on Billboard.com.

Saweetie Explains The Inspiration Behind Her Buzz Cut

saweetie 4

In an interview at Power 106 in LA  with radio personality Bryana, The Closer rapper explained that meditation is what inspired her to shed the energy attached to her hair. When asked about what inspired her to completely do the buzz cut sweetie answer with an unexpected response. “Meditation, as crazy as it sounds, I found so much clarity in myself,  I wanted to start over and I did research about hair and hair holds a lot of energy and I really wanted to just to feel new and fresh with this new music, I won’t say new me but elevated me” She says.  “ I really just wanted to start over again.”  What does elevated Saweetie look like you ask? The new calm Saweeetie simply responds with:  “She meditates she’s centered, she has clarity she knows what she wants, she puts her foot down, I feel like before I discovered meditation it was just ‘yes, yes I’ll do it’ no matter how bad my body felt if the opportunity was great I just said yes and I kept running down my mental, my spiritual, my physical.  But how am I going to continue to work if I’m deflated so I think that I have established more boundaries around me in the mental space, in the business space as well and I think everyone should do that.  See the interview below.

Saweetie Cancels ‘Icy Season’ To Work On Her Album, Which Should Be Out By Summer

Saweetie fans have been patiently waiting for her debut album, Pretty Bitch Music, for what might seem like forever after she delayed the album multiple times despite having huge hits in “My Type,” “Tap In,” and “Best Friend.” To hold them over, she initially planned to release an EP, Icy Season, in the first quarter of 2022, but now it seems even that plan has changed — but for a good reason. In a new interview with Billboard, the Bay Area rapper explained that she nixed the EP to lock in on finishing the album, which she now says should be out by summer.

She also explains why putting out her debut album has at times seemed such a halting, laborious process. “Sometimes our hit song is bigger than us and we’re just thrown into the game,” she says. “When you get signed, the label wants a hit. They want a return on their investment, which I understand. But it’s important for artists to understand themselves before they start seeking for hits. Because if you don’t know yourself, you don’t know your music.” She also doesn’t want to rush the process, as she feels she did with 2018’s High Maintenance and 2019’s Icy, and doesn’t “want to be safe anymore. Now it’s time to experiment.”

Considering she’s reportedly got a song in Tagalog, as well as Latin collab according to Billboard, it sounds like she’s expanding what the expectations of her album should be. Hopefully, she’s able to meet her own self-imposed deadline and live up to the potential she’s shown over the past few years.
