Back in 2021, a man named Cory “Ghost” Holland filed a lawsuit against 50 Cent and Starz over the network’s show Power. In the lawsuit, he claims that the series, which features the character “Ghost” was unlawfully borrowed from his real life story. The lawsuit cites a CD sent out by Holland which reportedly told his own life story as a “cautionary tale.” Subsequently, he now believes that led to his story being turned into the show for which he’s now seeking compensation.
But recently, according to All Hip Hop, the stakes of the lawsuit were increased. That came as 50 Cent and Starz have begun promoting Power: Origins. The spinoff show seeks to tell the stories of characters like Ghost before the beginning of the original Power series. Consequently, Holland is filing a motion in the lawsuit for a preliminary injunction. He’s hoping to stop the promotion of the new series. He’s claiming that the new series, once it airs, will harm his right to a fair trial by influencing potential jurors. 50’s lawyers quickly responded against the motion though a judgement hasn’t been handed down yet. Check out the announcement of the new spinoff series below.
Fans looking to see 50 Cent perform will get the chance at J. Cole’s Dreamville Festival later this week. The two day fest takes place on April 6 and 7 and 50 was just added to the roster. He was added to the lineup after Chris Brown had to drop out for unknown reasons. Some of Brown’s fans in the comments were hoping that the move was nothing but an April Fools Joke, but it appears to be true.
What do you think of the new motion filed to stop 50 Cent from promoting the newest Power spinoff? Do you think there’s any legitimacy to the claim that the character “Ghost” could be based on the man who filed the suit? Let us know in the comment section below.
Well, this is awkward. After STARZ announced the final season of Power Book II: Ghost, the show’s stars seemed to have had no clue this was the end.
Star Michael Rainey Jr. expressed his surprise on Instagram, revealing the team was recently planning the future of the show.

STARZ revealed that the upcoming fourth season of Power Book II: Ghost will mark the conclusion of the epic drama series, airing in two parts. Part one will premiere on Friday, June 7, with part two following on Friday, Sept. 6 at midnight on the STARZ app. Linear broadcasts will debut at 8:00 PM ET/PT in the U.S. and 9:00 PM ET in Canada.
The season four premiere on June 7 coincides with the 10th Anniversary of “Power’s” debut on STARZ. The Power franchise has spawned two additional spinoffs, including “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” and “Power Book IV: Force.”
This news comes shortly after STARZ announced plans to expand the Power universe by developing a new prequel series, “Origins,” exploring the origin story of fan-favorite characters Ghost and Tommy.
In conversation with Deadline, Starz CEO Jeff Hirsch revealed what leads to a show being cancelled for the network.
“When seasons go from one to two to three to four [seasons], three to four is where the cost really pops because most of the actors get bigger raises, and you have to really manage that. So, you have to have in your portfolio of development shows that can actually replace shows as they get into later seasons,” he said.
“As you turn the slate over to go from season four and five economics, to season one economics, you can pull a ton of cost out of the business. What you have to do is map out each of those shows and … what the curve looks like, and know where you have to pop a new show on to bring that cost down. And so we’ve got a pretty good map of what that looks like. Because again, we focus on those two core demos, we’ve been able to manufacture hits for those demos.”
Viewers can catch up on the gripping third season of Power Book II: Ghost on the STARZ app before the final season premiere.

Power Book II: Ghost will end after its fourth season. Starz announced the decision as a cost-cutting measure. “We want to contain content costs by developing more new shows versus sustaining series longer as they become more expensive,” Star CEO Jeffrey Hirsch explained.
Furthermore, Hirsch expanded on the rationale. “You look at the [Power] map and say, ‘OK, if I take one of those characters out and spin one of those out, I can bring that on to replace the Power show at half the cost.’ Now I’m putting a lot of money right to the bottom line. And I’m really not losing anything in terms of acquisition costs and subscriber viewership, because we know what those demos want,” he added.
Ghost, the first spinoff of 50 Cent’s Power, was unique in that it was named after a character who does not appear in the show. During the press tour for The Mother, Omari Hardwick was asked whether he would reprise his role as Ghost. “It would have to be the perfect thing,” Hardwick lamented before revealing a shocking twist. “They asked me before to come back. They asked me in the last year and a half to come back. When I was offered this, when I was in Boston reading this script. I was in Boston saying “and then this”. And then the “then this” went to Starz and then they didn’t come back. They didn’t give me what I wanted on the “then this”. So if they gave me the “then this”…but it would need to be the right “that”.”
Despite Hardwick helping make Power what it is today, it appears that Starz wasn’t willing to pay out to get him back. Perhaps this is part of the reason that 50 Cent is looking to move away from the network. However, this is sadly nothing new. Neve Campbell did not return for 2023’s Scream 6 after being lowballed by studio executives. Despite the fact there would be no Scream franchise without Campbell, the rights owners weren’t willing to pay her a fair rate. Since leaving Power, Hardwick has enjoyed a modicum of mainstream success. He has appeared in Army of the Dead and its unreleased spinoff Lost Vegas. Furthermore, he has appeared in Fantasy Football and Pieces of Her.
STARZ has revealed the development of a new addition to the Power universe with the upcoming prequel series Origins. This latest spinoff will offer fans a fresh perspective by delving into the origin story of beloved characters Ghost and Tommy.
Origins will mark the fourth installment in the successful Power franchise, following the footsteps of Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and Power Book IV: Force. While Power Book II: Ghost gears up for its fourth season, Raising Kanan and Force are currently in production on their respective seasons.
“As we approach the 10-year anniversary of Power it is incredible to witness the enormous connection our fans have with the Power universe,” said Kathryn Busby, President of Programming for STARZ. “We can’t wait to see how ‘Origins’ will further evolve this dynamic franchise while bringing fresh, gripping, and expansive storytelling to our audience.”
Executive producer Sascha Penn leads the creative team behind Origins. She is backed by the original Power creator, Courtney A. Kemp, through her production company End of Episode, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson through G-Unit Film and Television, and Mark Canton through Canton Entertainment. Lionsgate Television is producing the series for STARZ.
Rappers trying their hands at film and television is nothing new. Sometimes this comes in the way of acting roles and other times it’s more of a behind-the-scenes presence. That’s where Nas comes in as he’s just begun the development process for a new TV show. The series is reportedly going to tell the story of the first-ever black grandmaster in chess Maurice Ashley. Deadline reports it’s due for an eight-episode first season. But he isn’t working on the show alone and one of the collaborators he recruited has experience in the space between rap and television.
Nas is teaming up with Mark Canton, who has served as a producer on 50 Cent’s show Power and some of its spin-offs. In discussions about the collaboration the rapper seemed pretty excited at the potential. “I’m grateful to be part of bringing Maurice Ashley’s incredible life to the screen. His story is one of greatness and his perseverance will continue to inspire the next generation of thinkers,” he said. Ashley himself also spoke out about the project. He expressed his thanks for those fighting to make sure his story is told and the importance he feels it conveys.
Nas Working On A New TV Show About First Black Grandmaster In Chess
Last month, Nas was announced as one of the headliners of this year’s Roots Picnic. He’s one of numerous talented veterans taking the stage during the festival. Fellow headliners include Lil Wayne and Andre 3000. Despite the stacked lineup, much of the discussion of the festival after the lineup dropped was about someone else. Some fans took issue with Sexyy Red’s inclusion in the festival despite her massive breakout 2023.
Last year Nas released two new albums Magic 2 and Magic 3. The projects concluded his series of collaborations with producer Hit-Boy. What do you think of Nas working with one of the producers on “Power” to make a show about the first black grandmaster in chess? Do you think you’ll watch the show when it comes out? Set and filmed in Chicago, the series thrives in the city’s vibrant atmosphere, providing an authentic backdrop for its gritty, action-packed narrative. The ensemble cast reflects the diversity and cultural richness of the Windy City, adding depth to the storyline.
Meanwhile, season four of Power Book III: Raising Kanan production is underway in New York following the recent conclusion of its suspenseful third season.
Power Book IV: Force follows Tommy Egan as he navigates the ruthless drug game in Chicago, seeking to establish himself as the city’s sole distributor. As alliances shift and rivalries intensify, Tommy must confront difficult choices to claim his place as a kingpin.
Viewers can catch up on seasons one and two of Power Book IV: Force on the STARZ app.
The series, the third installment in the expanded Power Universe franchise, is executive produced by Courtney A. Kemp, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Mark Canton, Terri Kopp, and Chris Selak. Gary Lennon serves as showrunner and executive producer for season three, continuing the legacy of compelling storytelling. Lionsgate Television produces the series for STARZ.
The Power series and ensuing television universe has been running since 2014, with four total series, each airing on the Starz Network. The shows each center on a different group of characters or elements of the criminal underworld, with a great deal of crossover between themes and lead actors from the other outings. Of course, several peaks and valleys within the four programs offer a wide array of quality content for viewers to binge through at their leisure.
The original Power concluded its illustrious 6-year run in 2020, while Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and Power Book IV: Force are all still airing new episodes. While each series has its own world of intense thrills, rich characters, and compelling writing, some outings within the Power universe are better than others. Here’s a brief overview and ranking of each series from worst to best.
4. Power Book II: Ghost
The second series in the Power universe centers on the son of James “Ghost” St. Patrick, Tariq. Following up on Ghost’s exploits throughout the original show, Tariq begins to deal drugs on the streets of New York and finds himself in conflict with rival cartels and the woes of street life. Book II does an excellent job of carrying the torch from the original Power. However, the absence of Omari Hardwick looms over the entire production, making the program feel as though it’s missing something. While the show does a great job of expanding the world of Power, and showing additional sides of the underground world of crime, other entries into the universe have done an overall better job carving out their own lane.
3. Power Book III: Raising Kanan
Power Book III: Raising Kanan takes the fast-paced criminal underworld of New York and transports viewers back to the 1990s. The series centers on 50 Cent’s character, Kanan Stark, as a young man portrayed by Mekai Curtis. Though 50 Cent’s performance only lasted for the original Power series, the rap icon turned business mogul has continued to helm each of the Power shows as an executive producer.
The third book in the franchise offers a sympathetic coming-of-age story about one of the most beloved characters in the franchise, making Book III: Raising Kanan a fan favorite for many viewers. Of course, the show is plagued with a few slow episodes and a lot of filler plotlines, making it a great series to binge-watch but less enjoyable on a week-to-week basis. Like Book II and Book IV, Raising Kanan is still currently airing new episodes, with a fourth season slated to arrive later this year.
2. Power Book IV: Force
Power Book IV: Force is the fourth and most recent series in the growing Power television Universe. Unlike the previous three installments, Book IV takes a look at the criminal structure from the perspective of law enforcement. The show centers on Joseph Sikora’s Tommy Egan, who attempts to flee from his problems back in New York and head for Los Angeles. However, fate had other plans for the troubled NYPD detective as he becomes stuck in Chicago, navigating the minutiae of a criminal underworld in a completely different social landscape.
The show offers a deeper look into one of the key characters from the original Power series. It provides a refreshing change of pace both thematically and in terms of the show’s setting, proving that the Power franchise truly has the potential to cover a whole world of intersectionality. While many fans have come to revere Book IV: Forceeven more than several of the previous shows, nothing can top the original Power, which launched the entire franchise as we know it.
1. Power
Though a full decade has passed since its premiere, the original Power series remains unmatched. Something about the raw, explosive energy provided by the show has remained unforgettable for new and returning fans. At the same time, the thrilling conclusion serves to provide viewers with a sense of narrative closure. Perhaps other series within the franchise will garner the same favorable reception as Power once they conclude, although none of them have followed the same perfectly plotted three-act structure.
The show has won a myriad of awards for its illustrious run, including half a dozen NAACP Image Awards, though it joins prestige dramas like Better Call Saul and The Wire for having never won an Emmy. When new fans leap into the Power franchise, they can’t help but awe at the series that started it all.
