Larry June Shares Laid-Back & Addictive Loosie “Treasure Island”

Larry June is one of the kings of vibe in the modern hip-hop era. When he drops a track, project, or feature, you know what you’re going to get most of the time. While we mostly like to see artists expand their range and experiment (especially early on in their career), Uncle Larry is one of the exceptions. At this point, he’s far beyond needing to take any risks. He’s built an established brand and fan base, and most likely any sort of slight tweak to his formula would possibly upset a lot of people. Another reason why we appreciate him is due to his incredibly contagious aura and personality. He oozes confidence, swagger, and opulence. “Treasure Island,” his newest release displays all three of those traits and then some.

Making it an impressive cut is how he manages to do so with the little time June gives himself to play with. It’s just 1:55 long but thanks to the bars and calm production from Jake One (Drake, J. Cole, Chance the Rapper), it pulls it off with ease. We have to especially give a shout out to the latter, though. The wavy sound effects, background kid vocals, and synth-heavy outro all play with the boom-bap aesthetic very nicely. Larry’s bars about chasing success and a lavish lifestyle in the California hills are the cherry on top of the gold-flaked sundae and it’s got us replaying the track over and over. It seems like this will wind up being a loosie, especially based on Larry’s IG post about it. “Had to toss it up. F*** it 🍊🌐” Nonetheless, we enjoy it a lot and we hope that it finds a home on a tape.

IDK’s “Flow” Lives Up To Its Title And Then Some

IDK is bringing one hard-hitting “FLOW” to his new single. It clocks in at just 1:46, but it’s one of his best pure rapping performances of the year. Right now, there’s no clear intention for what this song is for. There’s a very strong chance that’s a little loosie for the hardcore fans. However, there’s a slimmer possibility that he could be working a deluxe version of his most recent album, BRAVADO + INTiMO. His fifth studio project landed back on Halloween and has received a lot of praise from his supporters. Critically, it has done so-so, but we would be lying if we said there aren’t some solid cuts on the 12-song project.

With the end of the year in sight, if a bonus edition does come, it will most likely be a 2025 release. But we aren’t going to speculate anymore for now. Let’s talk about “FLOW,” because we are really impressed with the pockets he’s hitting. Being able to have a strong command of this skill is vital to any rapper’s success, a point that IDK agrees with right from the jump. “The flow is the answer,” he says on the brief record’s chorus. He’s essentially on a slip-n-slide on “FLOW,” especially with the brisk tempo of the instrumental which is loose and fun. See what the Maryland native is offering up with this one by checking the link out below.

Quotable Lyrics:

The flow is the answer
Water the plants, I dance with the daisies
Actually ants inside of my pants got me antsy
Aunties hoping and praying the kids will understand me
Labels is praying and wishing and working for the grammy
Granny praying and praying I duck the double whammies

Kalan.FrFr Is Seeing Right Through His Competitions’ Facades On “Dice Game”

California rapper and crooner Kalan.FrFr is issuing a fair warning to those who think they big and bad. The PSA appears on his latest release, “Dice Game,” his first solo single since April’s “EVERYBODY.” If you remember that track made its way onto May EP, MAKE THE WEST GREAT AGAIN, which landed almost week after Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” We mention that fact because the West Coast was at the peak of its powers when that dropped, and Kalan dropped at the perfect time. Unfortunately, due it being just an EP, it didn’t have as much staying power as it could’ve had. There are some rumblings that he’s prepping a new album behind the scenes. So, we will just have to wait and see when that hits.

Maybe then he will get more people talking and we know he can do that. He’s very capable of dropping some heat and “Dice Game” is an example of that. The track has a dark and intimidating energy, which is fitting given its themes and lyrics. On it, Kalan.FrFr feels that too many people out there are faking how up they really are. “N****s too tough around the b****es, that’s weird s*** / N****s thinkin’ that they low-key plotting, but we hear s***,” he raps with vigor on his second verse. The beat is also a major highlight for us as it possesses that traditional West Coast bounce and trunk-knocking bass. This is Kalan in his more aggressive bag, which is one that we like hearing him approach. He can go off when he wants to, and “Dice Game” should be something that he runs with going forward.

Offset Returns With His First Solo Track In Over A Year With “Swing My Way”

2024 for Offset has been dominated by his strenuous relationship/falling out with Cardi B. Overall, it’s been very difficult to see them tear each other down so ruthlessly. But the former Migos rapper is looking to move past all of that by dropping some new music. It’s actually a bit of special release for the Georgia superstar, as “Swing My Way” is here as an early birthday gift to himself and his fans. He will be turning 33 tomorrow, December 14. On this record, Offset is delivering his effortless flow that he’s become known for since dropping music professionally over a decade ago.

Turbo is on production for this single and its honestly a perfect match for what he like to tackle. A lot of fans are saying that this would have been a fire Gunna collab. However, we can appreciate Offset riding solo on this one because he sounds great. Audiences agree, with some even dubbing this as his best single in a while. It feels like it could be a lead-off cut for an upcoming album, something that he’s been teasing since dropping SET IT OFF last year. There have been rumors that it will be named after his government name, Kiari. However, nothing has been truly set in stone just yet. For now, check out “Swing My Way” and its music video which stars model, Anok Yai.

Lil Tjay Hints At New Music In Latest Single “Let It Go Baby”

Over the last five years or so, Lil Tjay has built up quite a loyal fanbase. It’s thanks to his abilities to pen relatable and personal tracks, as well as lowkey sensual jams. The latter of which has produced some of his biggest hits to date such as “Calling My Phone” with 6LACK. Another reason why he’s become such a fixture in the East Coast scene is because of his willingness to drop. If you haven’t been keeping up, Lil Tjay has laid out a trio of singles over the last two months.

Hopefully, this means that an album is on the horizon. It’s been over a year since he dropped 222. He hasn’t announced anything officially yet, however, he may have done so in a song. This weekend, Lil Tjay delivered “Let It Go Baby,” and on the chorus is where he hints at a possible LP. “Been a minute, I ain’t been droppin’, time to go crazy,” he melodically raps on the first line. He’s already been going off lat ely, but maybe this is a sign of even more things to come. Overall, Tjay is sounding solid over the somber keys and minimal beat as he talks about stresses, people trying to bring him down, and more.

Mary J. Blige Expresses “Gratitude” On Her Potential Final Album

One of the steadiest and most consistent R&B talents of the modern era may be hanging it up soon. Mary J. Blige is back with her 15th studio album, Gratitude, and during the rollout she revealed that she’s considering retirement. “It might be the last studio album. It might be,” she told People. Then, on top of that, the New York native came across as at peace with where she’s at in her life thanks to music. In speaking with the daytime talk show Sherri about the title of the album, she said, “It’s called Gratitude because that’s where I am. I mean, look at my life right now. I’m in a constant state of gratitude.”

Blige added, “I feel good. I have jobs and opportunities. I’m healthy. My family’s healthy. I have people around that care for me and love me. And I have amazing fans. I’m so grateful to my fans for all the years of love that they’ve given me and support.” We will just have to keep tabs on her going forward, especially when she heads out on tour. Mary J. Blige is taking Gratitude across the US starting at the end of January and wrapping things up on April 14. The For My Fans Tour will also include openers Ne-Yo and Mario, so it could be a nice victory lap for what’s been a stellar career.

Smiley Returns With A New Single “Understand” Amid Potential Album Rollout

Smiley seems to catch a lot of strays online for not being the most thrilling talent on the OVO label. However, the Canadian act is encouraging those doubters to “#dontboxmein📦” This is a hashtag he’s been using quite frequently on his social media accounts, and it could mean something else. In the middle of September, the fifth-year rapper put out “Spill The Tea,” which was delivered in his exaggerated tone, along with his unique cadence and accent. It remains to be a divisive quality despite the fact that Drake has his back. In some cases, the co-sign is enough for some, especially when it comes to someone as big as The Boy. But we again go back to that “#dontboxmein” mantra. Smiley wants to make sure that no one belittles his abilities and that’s what he’s partially conveying on “Understand.”

It’s his newest release, and it might be teaser for a project that’s not officially in the works yet. That quote could be the title for it, but no one knows. However, it does help that Smiley packaged this track with “Spill The Tea.” On “Understand,” he’s making sure that people are aware that he’s a special artist and he’s lived/is living a one-of-a-kind life that most would dream for. The production on the track is ethereal and crisp, and the efforts can be attributed to Pooh Beatz. In terms of the flows, Smiley, is mixing auto-tuned singing with rapping, something he’s been doing for years now. It’s another fine addition to his still-growing catalog and one that we are sure he hopes will succeed. Check it out with the music video link below.

Midwxst Reminds The Non-believers He’s Not Going Anywhere On “No Handouts”

Throughout his career, midwxst has taken some risks. For some, they have paid off. For others, they might’ve not. Regardless of the outcomes for the listeners out there, the South Carolina product isn’t going to stop trying and taking his sound to uncharted territories. On his new single “no handouts,” midwxst seemingly addresses the doubters and haters by reminding them he’s going to be around for a long time. “But there ain’t no one that can count me out / Don’t get tired of my name, ’cause you gon’ see me ’round,” he exclaims over a wild hyperpop instrumental.

In addition to remaining resilient, midwxst is also looking out for the future boundary-pushers. “In the center of the photo, so I can’t be cropped / Don’t regard the s*** they say, because they all just talk (One, two, one, two, three, let’s go).” This soundscape is something that the creative has been rocking with for a little bit now. E3 is the project that sees his dive into it the most. It’s a project that has kept our interest in his journey and remains one that we revisit. Speaking of his musical excursion, midwxst looks to be in the process of curating a new project thanks in part to “no handouts.” Overall, nothing is set yet, but he’s been using the #archangel on a lot of his social media posts lately. We will see what happens with that. But for now, check out the track and music video below.

“No Handouts” – Midwxst

Quotable Lyrics:

No matter what you do
Hope you know that everybody won’t look up to you

‘Cause you’re everything they’re not

Sukihana Does Her Best Michael Jackson Impression On “WTFO”

One thing to know about Sukihana is that she’s going to do whatever the f*** she wants, and you just have to accept it. If she says she’s not a musician (which she is), then she isn’t. Does anyone remember that quote from her interview from her interview with Bobbi Althoff? We’re going on a tangent, she’s got some new music out, so let’s talk about it. Sukihana’s latest offering is called “WTFO” (Walk The F*** Out) and it’s about what you expect from her.

It’s braggadocious, blunt, and ratchet, and her authentic self. It’s why her fans respect her and come back for more each and every time. However, there is a bit of a curveball thrown on this record. On her second verse, she randomly busts out Michael Jackson’s iconic “hee-eeh” adlib. Suki then utilizes that to emphasize words such as “free” and “me.” It’s quite hysterical and the fans have been talking about it nonstop since its release. Goofiness aside, this seems to be the second track that’s possibly promoting a new project. Nothing has been formally declared yet, but she dropped “WTFO” and coupled it with the previously released “Suki Suki.” If this turns out to be true, it will be her first full-length effort of her career, which started in 2017.

Polo G Details His Mental State & Past On “S.I.P.”

Polo G had his fans impatiently waiting for a new album for three whole years. It didn’t help that a fair number of people weren’t the biggest Hall of Fame apologists either. There was some belief out there that the Chicago rapper and singer was losing some of his touch and drive, to an extent. Given all of that, there was hope that he would get back to quality that was present on THE GOAT and Die A Legend. Unfortunately, when he came back in early August with the highly teased HOOD POET, some were let down due to the lack of chances or updates made to his sound.

The “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality is something Polo G seems to live by and it’s carrying into “S.I.P.” At times, this method works to his advantage, as his hardcore supporters appreciate the lore and his come-up. Both areas are covered on this introspective cut, as talks about his current mental state and how his unstable childhood may have influenced some of the decisions he makes today. With this coming so soon after HOOD POET, there’s some real speculation from Genius and his contemporaries that a 2.0 version could be arriving sometime soon. For now, check out the track on DSPs or wait until 5 p.m. to watch the premiere of its music video.
