Nicki Minaj Said ‘Billboard’ Is Trying To Discredit Her Sales With New Rules Following A Successful Fan Contest

Nicki Minaj‘s fifth studio album Pink Friday 2 has proven to be a hit among fans. In the week since its release, songs from the album have dominated the streaming and iTunes charts. Additionally, Minaj’s dedicated fanbase, the Barbz, have taken to social media to show off their vinyl and CD editions of the album. Many fans are anticipating that the album will reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

However, it looks like some last-minute changes to the rules may affect her rankings. Today (December 13), Minaj took to Twitter to express her frustrations with Billboard, claiming they are not going to count 100,000 of the physical edition sales, as the “Big Difference” rapper held a contest requiring Barbz to show proof that they purchased four editions of the album. Following the contest, she would select 100 Barbz to join her in the studio one day.

“been discussing my 100 barbz contest for months,” said Minaj. “They said billboard reached out to say they gon take away sales for me telling y’all about the 100 barbz thing.”

She continued, hinting that she would reveal more news within the next few hours.

In a follow up post, Minaj shared that the album has reached 300,000 units sold in physical and streaming equivalents, however, Billboard allegedly won’t include 100,000 of those sales.

“It’s at 300 but once they filter out 100K, you’ll be none the fkng wiser,” said Minaj.

She continued expressing her frustrations, saying, “I’m being punished for: Not signing a 360; Making great music; Having great fans; And for not leaving the game so that their new Nicki’s (who signed 360 deals) can be propped up to look as tho they are a lot more successful than they rlly are.”

Earlier this week, Minaj revealed the dates for the highly-anticipated Pink Friday 2 World Tour which will kick off early next year.

Justine Skye Stands Up For Nicki Minaj Amid Online Backlash

Nicki Minaj is a controversial figure online for many reasons. She often leans into the drama and creates some of it on her own. But there’s still plenty of evidence that she gets more scrutiny than many of her contemporaries. That’s been heightened in the past week. Mostly because she’s re-entered the public eye in a major way following the release of Pink Friday 2. The album rode in on a massive wave of hype as her first new project in 5 years. She also spent much of this year teasing its release.

Now for a variety of reasons, some fans online aren’t happy with Nicki. Part of it is because of the various shots she takes at other female rappers across the album. Many noted when the tracklist was announced that while she works with some of the biggest men in rap today, none of her female contemporaries appear on the album. Part of that is likely because she takes some shots at other big names like Latto and Megan Thee Stallion on the album. Though she made sure to shut down any rumors of a potential beef with Doja Cat. But amid lots of fan discussion online about Nicki’s behavior and creative output, Justine Skye came to her defense. Read Skye’s full tweet below.

“Nicki has always been animated and theatrical in her own way, from day one,” Skye’s tweet begins. She explains that it was that very nature of her personality that helped turn her into the superstar she is today. Then she pivots to observations on the ways black women at large suffer in the music industry.

“I hate how comfortable and quick our community is to join together in negativity towards successful black women/men before lifting them up,” Skye continues. “Some of y’all are focused n the wrong thing and then wonder why the stereotypical path for black artist is when they blow up they “forget their people.” What do you think of Justine Skye’s statement in defense of Nicki Minaj? Will Nicki Minaj’s ‘Pink Friday 2’ Go No. 1?

Nicki Minaj’s new album Pink Friday 2 has been well-received by fans after months of build-up and a rollout that included unconventional strategies like appearing on streamer Kai Cenat’s Twitch channel and the virtual Gag City campaign. The album, which features appearances from Drake, J. Cole, and even Billie Eilish (sort of), is also doing pretty well commercially. But is it enough to get Nicki her second No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200?

According to HitsDailyDouble (which is rarely wrong about this sort of thing), it looks likely, with the new album trending toward 200,000 album-equivalent units (which would include both streams and straight sales). Interestingly, according to the @Chartsdata account on Twitter (aka “X”), this would make it her biggest debut since Pinkprint in 2014, which sold 244,000 album-equivalent units its first week, good for a No. 2 debut on the albums chart.

Nicki’s second album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, actually did debut at No. 1 after selling 253,000 copies in its first week. The first Pink Friday eventually reached No. 1 in its 11th week after a No. 2 debut with 375,000 (which kind of goes to show how stressing out over first-week numbers is a ridiculous way to do things). Minaj infamously had a minor meltdown when Queen debuted at No. 2 in 2018 with 185,000 album-equivalent units, coming in behind Travis Scott (although she made some good points), and it looks like she took some lessons from that album’s success to build up to an even bigger rebound with pink Friday 2.

Nicki Minaj Says Roman Might Come Back, Addresses “Pink Friday 2” Haters

Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 is proving to be quite the divisive release, as any impactful, massive, and significant release tends to be. While many Barbz are quite happy with the project, others are less in love with what they feel is a bloated tracklist, little artistic progression, and faltered expectations in comparison to its first installment. However, she is very aware of all the criticism, although she doesn’t think much of it is respectful or relevant to her evolution. Moreover, the Trinidadian MC recently took to Twitter on Wednesday night (December 13) to address the response to her new LP, and to also announce some very exciting news for her OG fans.

“Guys, I SOOOOO appreciate the love on this album,” Nicki Minaj tweeted. “I’d like to address one thing. Ppl can make WHAT they want WHEN they want. Especially when they’re a GENIUS- a CONSISTENT GENIUS- & have given us their ALL for over a decade, changed music forever, for the BEST. Especially when they’ve given us “mature” content when it wasn’t even COOL to do so. You don’t dictate where an artist is at in their artistry. We can only ask that they continue to share it. So that when they make their next authentic transition, we are allowed to witness it. We can’t tell them how to do that. You don’t know the artist. You may feel close to them (credit to them), but you can’t say what their truth is @ that particular time in their own life. In fact, that IS their TRUTH. And that’s OK.

“Everyone on this album elevated ME. not just what they contributed. They elevated ME. I’m honored that they’d share their gifts, their fan bases, their TIME with me. & the BARBZ. Thank you.” “Now leave them alone, show respect, & enjoy the music,” Nicki Minaj continued in another tweet. “You have no clue how much they go above & beyond whether I hit them at 9am or 3am. The #GagCity version of #PinkFriday2 will be on streaming tmrw. To include: Beep Beep ft 50 Cent Love me enough (MONICA & KEYSHIA COLE) + 2 -3 more surprises. BUT, i may have to put out the #GagCity FULL edition next week & give u guys just 1 more song on the #GagCity version that would come out tmrw. (Total of 3) So it would be half gag tmrw, half gag next week. (Total of 5-6).

Roman’s Revenge Is Coming Once Again

“But!!!! one thing is for CERTAIN, that full gag will be the GAG of AWLLL GAGS,” she announced. “#RomanInGagCity. Show out? get him. simple. Nicki Minaj Reveals “Needle” Was Initially Meant For Drake’s “For All The Dogs”

Nicki Minaj and Drake finally reunited on Pink Friday 2. The latest project from New York’s finest hit streaming services on December 8th and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The tracklist boasts 22 songs with Nicki holding down the majority of it on her own. However, Drake and J. Cole’s appearance became highlights once she unveiled the project in its entirety. The former appears on “Needle,” marking another exceptional addition to their collaborative streak together.

On Wednesday (December 13), Nicki Minaj continued her press run for Pink Friday 2 with Kai Cenat. She slid through to the AMP House for an incredibly entertaining stream where they discussed an array of topics. Eventually, Nicki shed some light on her and Drake’s latest collaboration. However, it also doubles as an explanation for her absence on For All The Dogs. “Originally, it was for Drake’s album,” she said, adding that she immediately fell in love with the song and hoped that it would somehow land on Pink Friday 2. “And then what happened was, in the end, Drake – and he was about to turn in For All The Dogs – he sent me two songs… That same day, he also told me, ‘Hey, I’m not using ‘Needle’ for the album ‘cause it doesn’t fit the sonic vibe. Do you want it?’”

Classic Dricki Vibes

Nicki continued to explain that it felt like a perfect collaboration for herself and Drake, one that aligns with the numerous other records that they’ve linked up on in the past. “It just reminds me of all of my Dricki nostalgia. The song is so Drake,” she said. Only Drake can do it and it reminds me for the first time like when we collaborated on ‘Moment 4 Life,’ which was on Pink Friday 1,” Kai chimed in, referring to “Moment For Life” as a “motivational and inspirational” song.

Although Drake confirmed that Nicki Minaj would appear on For All The Dogs, the Barbz certainly felt a type of way when her name wasn’t on the tracklist. Fortunately, it worked out in the end and Drake and Nicki Minaj closed out the year on a high note together. Nicki Minaj To Join Kai Cenat For Livestream

Recently, Kai Cenat took to social media to announce an upcoming livestream. Tonight, the streamer will be joined by none other than the Queen of Rap herself, Nicki Minaj. She just unveiled her new album Pink Friday 2 last week, so the duo will surely have plenty to discuss. Based on the comments section, it looks like fans can’t wait, with countless viewers noting how Cenat manages to recruit some of the most entertaining guests.

This won’t be the first time the two of them went live together, however. Back in October, they joined forces on Instagram Live. They went viral over a hilarious moment, which saw Nicki shutting the 21-year-old down after he asked when her tour would start. It’s since been announced to kick off in March. “Have a good night Kai,” she told him at the time, winking and ending the Live. Nicki later spoke on their relationship, revealing that the moment was all in good fun.

“Pink Friday 2” Sales Projections Increase, Nicki Minaj Promises To Cuss Joe Budden Out: Watch

The Barbz have long predicted that Nicki Minaj’s comeback would be epic, but even they weren’t fully prepared for the creativity unleashed by the Queen of Rap on Pink Friday 2. She reconnected with frequent collaborators like Drake and Lil Wayne on her tracklist, while also tackling new challenges, such as working with 50 Cent and J. Cole. The initial first week sales projections for the LP hit the internet this past weekend, with HDD speculating Minaj would move 170-190K album equivalent units over the next few days. After making a splash on Friday (December 8), those numbers have gotten a significant increase today (December 12).

This time, HDD says the mother of one is aiming to land on top of the Billboard chart and should sell 200K. “It would mark her biggest debut since The Pinkprint in 2014,” @chartdata noted when sharing the information. Minaj’s last album, 2018’s Queen debuted at No. 2 with 185K units sold, coming behind Travis Scott’s Astroworld, which arrived atop the Billboard 200 the week before. The Trinidadian wasn’t happy to lose out on her throne last time, so she’ll be happy to see that competition is minimal this time around.

Pink Friday 2 Aiming for No. 1 Debut

She’s probably taking time to celebrate the big news, but elsewhere, Minaj is keeping busy giving one interview after another. On Tuesday, she teased another sitdown with Joe Budden coming in the future and even hinted that she might have to cuss the podcaster out again, as has seemingly become their tradition. “You know why I’m here? Because this man always deserves a good cussing out from me, ok? And that’s why I made it my business! Was I gonna cancel it? Sure! Was I gonna show up 10 hours late? Of course!” she quipped.

Nicki Minaj “Pink Friday 2” Review

Since the turn of the decade, we’ve constantly faced reminders that seminal bodies of work that arrived post-2010 have withstood the test of time. Pink Friday, released on the same day as Kanye West’s magnum opus, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, left an ineffaceable mark on pop culture. That day, we witnessed Ye rise from the ashes of the still-infamous VMAs incident. But for Nicki Minaj, it was a day when she shook up a male-dominated genre with a distinct claim for her spot. Pink Friday created the template for the women who came after Nicki. Over a decade later, the effects are clear as day. At a time when women are simultaneously moving the needle and dictating what’s hot, it’s impossible to ignore the doors that Nicki Minaj broke down with her debut album.

Mixtape Nicki Returns

Pink Friday 2 arrives 13 years later, coinciding with her 42nd birthday, and appropriately so. Her latest studio album, which was initially due out in November, celebrates her place in history as we close out the Hip-Hop 50 celebrations. Pink Friday became a forceful and vibrant introduction to an integral figure in hip-hop’s fabric. Its sequel feels like a culmination of 10+ years of dominance in the rap game with responses to calls for “mixtape Nicki” and bolder advances towards melodies that can sometimes fall flat. Best exemplified in the first few songs alone, the Billie Eilish-sampling “Are You Gone Already” finds Nicki exploring her airy vocals with introspection on motherhood and the loss of her father.

But after such a loaded and emotionally-heavy glance into Nicki’s psyche since Papa Bear’s birth, she delivers a glorious spree of bars over hard-hitting production. “Beep Beep” and “FTCU” bring Nicki Minaj’s lyrical mastery to the forefront over production from Murda Beatz and ATL Jacob, respectively. The former feels more in line with one-off singles like “Chun-Li” which oozes New York swagger over electrifying production. The latter, however,

“Big Difference,” too, finds Nicki making it clear that while she’s here to play for keeps, not to play nice. “When bitches be rappin’, I’m laughin’, it sound like you tryin’ to me/ I’m who you dyin’ to be/ Will somebody cop all these groupies a ticket? ‘Cause I’m who they dyin’ to meet,” she raps, imposing a standard that she expects her “sons” to uphold, especially if they’re gunning for her throne.

A Star-Studded Line-Up Of Collaborations

With a tracklist of 22 songs, Nicki fortunately doesn’t need to rely on guest features to prop it up. However, the guests appearing on the project help elevate the album and add a breath of excitement. Take “Let Me Calm Down,” for example.  After linking up with Young Money alum Drake on “First Person Shooter” and “Evil Ways,” it would’ve felt only appropriate that J Cole similarly went bar-for-bar with Nicki. However, that competitive spirit manifests in other forms. As the two trade bars reflect on loyalty and family, Nicki perfectly sets up Cole for an impressive performance that remains one of the best verses on the album.

Unfortunately, the same can’t necessarily be said for her mentor Lil Wayne, who ends his rather impressive 2023 feature run with a throwaway verse on “RNB.” Nicki’s latest signee Tate Kobang holds down the hook on the song but part of it feels like it could’ve been a reference track for Chris Brown.

However, Drake lends his talents for easily one of the most infectious records on the project, “Needle.” Although their previous collabs, whether “Moment 4 Life” or “Seeing Green,” allowed the two to flex their lyrical prowess while similarly tracing their influences back to Lil Wayne, “Needle” leans deeper into the Caribbean and African influences that are dominating mainstream sounds. No doubt, both Drake and Nicki Minaj have played critical roles in popularizing these genres for Western audiences in their careers. However, Drake brings some serious Views vibes with an infectious earworm of a hook that sounds like it came from PartyNextDoor’s hard drive. For Nicki, it’s a record that further traces her history in Caribbean music, similar to “Forward From Trini” ft. Skeng and Skillibeng.

Pink Friday 2 Is A Breath Of Fresh Air In Her Catalog

While there are plenty of highlights across the album, Pink Friday 2’s biggest weakness is the reliance on all-too-familiar samples that fail to do justice to the original. Songs like “Pink Friday Girls” feel like it’s a contrived effort for TikTok virality and inescapable radio play through Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.”

However, there are other moments where she effectively flips popular records into something of her own. “Barbie Dangerous” pulls directly from Biggie and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s iconic “Notorious Thugs,” down to the double-time flows that would make Biggie and Bone Thugs proud. Then, there’s “Everybody” ft Lil Uzi Vert, an inarguable hit record. Transforming Junior Senior’s “Move Your Feet” into a Jersey drill banger, Nicki and Lil Uzi Vert continue to find new soundscapes for their chemistry to flourish. While Nicki’s attempts to fortify relationships with the younger generation of artists, “Everybody” showcases her and Uzi’s synchronicity to a tee.

At first glance, Pink Friday 2 can be easily written off as another cash grab: an expansive 22-song tracklist that utilizes already famous songs to recreate the success of “Super Freaky Girl,” which in itself already felt like an attempt to mimic the impact of “Anaconda” in the TikTok era. However, there’s less tension in trying to guard her throne and more comfort in the beauties of motherhood and family on Pink Friday 2. Ultimately, it’s not like Nicki’s necessarily changed in the 13 years since her debut album, but the maturity is a breath of fresh air in her catalog.
