In December, most people are reviewing the best and worst of 2023, but Vanilla Ice would rather reflect on the 1990s. There is cause to believe this is his favorite hobby. In July 2021, the rapper told TMZ that he believed the ’90s is “the greatest decade ever before computers ruined the world.” Earlier this month, during an interview with VladTV, he revealed he knows “too much” about the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur.

Fifty-one minutes into the same VladTV interview, Vanilla Ice casually mentioned the late, infamous Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar “coming to my house” in the 1990s. He confirmed he “hung out with Pablo Escobar many, many times” as well as “everybody from Cocaine Cowboys.”

Ice continued:

“We were all friends. […] They would land helicopters in my house constantly on Star Island, come into my house. I had food just for them in the refrigerators. I had my maids and everybody and all them clean up after they left, and they would take me in the helicopter. We’d go to these great events and race boats and look at all the cool stuff that they were making. And I never questioned [because] we didn’t have Google. I don’t know who these people are. I thought they were businessman.”

Naturally, TMZ — like all of us — had some followup questions. Vanilla Ice caught up with TMZ Live on Tuesday, December 19, and added further context.

“Pablo was into racing boats, I was into racing boats, and he really did a lot of great things for the boat industry because the money he spread around to, I guess, traffic the drugs also spread into the racing boat community,” Vanilla Ice said. He also clarified that he was mostly “clueless” about the nefarious behavior of his unlikely friends. Watch the full clip here.

Vanilla Ice Claims Pablo Escobar Was “Great,” Recalls Hanging Out “Constantly”

During a recent interview with VladTV, Vanilla Ice reflected on the time he spent with Pablo Escobar. Surprisingly, he wasn’t aware of what the Colombian drug lord did for a living, assuming that he was simply a businessman. According to Vanilla Ice, he had some good times with Escobar and his crew, calling him nothing short of a “great” guy in person.

“I hung out with Pablo Escobar many, many times,” he began. “And Juan Almeida, Pepe Nunez, Ralph [‘Cabeza’ Linero] and everybody from Cocaine Cowboys. We were all friends.” He went on, describing how Escobar and his friends would make frequent visits to his home. “They would land helicopters in my house constantly on Star Island, come into my house, I had food just for them in the refrigerators,” he explained.

Vanilla Ice & Pablo Escobar Were Friends

“They would take me in the helicopter and we would go to all these great events, race boats and look at all the cool stuff that they were making,” he continued. “I never [asked] questions, we didn’t have Google, I don’t know who these people are. I thought they were businessmen. They liked to race boats like I did.” Vanilla Ice says that overall, Escobar was a joy to be around, despite what one might expect. “Pablo was a great person in person,” he explained. “This sounds ridiculous! First of all, I had no Google. You don’t go up to people and go, ‘What do you do for a living?’”

“I have no idea, bro. The guy’s loaded, he has a [Ferrari] Testarossa, I had a Porsche that’s smoking. We raced. I raced Pablo Escobar. I smoked him. We would go out and race boats. We were always on boats. They was always a bunch of bikinis floating around everywhere,” he added. What do you think of Vanilla Ice’s account of hanging out with Pablo Escobar? DJ Khaled Tried But Failed

Essentially, DJ Khaled is quite fond of Pablo Escobar, as are many hip-hop artists from the United States. However, J Balvin does not like him at all. Unfortunately, Khaled never got this message and presented Balvin with a bit of a baffling offering. “One day DJ Khaled called me while I was doing an interview,” Balvin explained. “He was like, ‘Wait wait, I got a gift for you!’ He brought a huge picture of Pablo Escobar. I was like, ‘Listen. Take that shit back there because we don’t give a fuck about that guy here!’”

Needless to say, DJ Khaled eventually got the message. For now, it is probably a safe bet for Khaled to stick to sneakers as gifts, at least for the immediate future. According to several confirmed reports, 2 Chainz will be expanding his Esco Restaurant And Tapas chain just six years after opening the flagship location in Atlanta in 2016. This milestone comes shortly after Chainz and his business partner Mychel “Snoop” Dillard settled a lawsuit out of court with the family of drug czar Pablo Escobar.

The ATL trap/rap star said that he and Dillard signed their first franchise agreement after successfully running three Atlanta locations.

“[Dillard’s] one of the people that really made my transition into this hospitality space easier because originally my introduction to the space was real estate,” said Chainz. “I own properties and dirt and stuff like that. So that merged with her passion and mine and made me very comfortable in this space going on six years now.”

After being sued by the family of Pablo Escobar in 2020 for using the Colombian drug kingpin’s intellectual property, the business duo recently managed to successfully settle out of court wit the family to the tune of $15K, which ultimately allowed them to expand the franchise.
