Destroy Lonely “LOVE LASTS FOREVER” Album Review

Opium is all the rage these days, and Destroy Lonely is one of the reasons why this movement became much more than a passing fad. He’s defined a corner of the contemporary rap world for better or worse thanks to his obvious inspirations from Playboi Carti’s artistry and how he fuses those creatively with the melodic and woozy aesthetics of a Lil Uzi Vert. But much like the rest of the label’s output, the Atlanta native faces a lot of criticism for the perceived staleness and lack of substance around the sound of rage. To give credit where it’s due, LOVE LASTS FOREVER is his best work yet that displays more unique tones, dynamic vocal performances, and distinguishable stylistic influences than what many give him credit for. But sadly, it’s not enough of a forward push to fully break it out of its repetitive spell.

Furthermore, there’s a strong percussive formula for most of LOVE LASTS FOREVER: shuttering and crisp hi-hats, reverb-heavy snares or claps, and buzzing bass and kicks. It works well sometimes – the dreamy “LOVE HURTS” with Uzi (who does their thing quite well), the frantic psychedelia on “BABY MONEY,” or the welcome timbre changes on “SYRUP SIPPIN” that sound more laser-y than murderous. The problem arises when you’ve heard your fourth or fifth Destroy Lonely track in a row where the trap drums take up most of the mix instrumentally. There are some legitimately cool alternative melodic influences here such as “WISH YOU WELL” and sung samples on “AMERIKA,” but from the very beginning of the album, generic vocal melodies plus washed-out mixing and synth layering taint them alongside unfulfilling structures.

Destroy Lonely’s Hits & Misses

For example, “FOREVER” kicks LOVE LASTS FOREVER off oddly with dramatic opening vocals from Melanie Blatt and All Saints that give more EDM drop than psych-trap. Still, it’s one of the few modular tracks here that goes through significant changes, so we have to give props for how its stark and icy snares eventually transition into a trap rhythm pretty effectively. The other structural features of Destroy Lonely’s latest album rest mostly on spacey outros with various interchangeable synth layers, which are a bare minimum at this point within the mainstream trap lane. Throughout its runtime, it mostly depends on tempo changes and switching up distinct and distorted melodic tones to provide variety. It certainly succeeds at this more than If Looks Could Kill, but not by much. Vocally, Lone still has a long way to go.

That’s not to say that he hasn’t separated himself further from his Opium counterparts, who previously exhibited much more performance crossover with each other. “THRILL” with Ken Carson sees Destroy Lonely contrast Ken’s nasal growl with a more high-pitched and airy tone. But without many direct vocal contrasts even with himself, he ends up sounding the same over a lot of these instrumentals. D.L. uses his entire arsenal on every single song, switching from more aggressive triplet flows to stretched-out crooning, lower-register embellishments, and soaring vocal leads… Sometimes all within a minute. It makes for a compellingly dynamic performance if you’re listening to any one song individually. But when you’re spinning 20+ tracks consecutively, that variety really loses its luster fast, especially when you don’t have the crutch of lyricism to fall back on.

Does LOVE Really LAST FOREVER?

Of course, no one wants LOVE LASTS FOREVER to get in its Nas bag. What matters to Destroy Lonely is the energy and the atmosphere, but even then, this only works up to a certain point. While some funny or ridiculous lines stand out here and there (“These n***as keep dropping trash, boy, stop littering” on “SHIP HER OFF” or “She trying to skate all on my ice, she think she Frozone” on “LOCK IN,” for example), there’s also a good chance you’ve heard them before or that you literally don’t care. The vibe is what matters. It contributes to this album’s biggest misstep: there’s very little to take away from it once it ends. No matter what version you listen to, the lack of standout hooks, memorable verses, tightly defined melodies, and interesting song structures leaves you feeling quite vapid by the end.

To reiterate, this is more of a numbing effect than the straight-up boring effort on If Looks Could Kill. Destroy Lonely does define himself more as an artist here, making rage-adjacent trap that is uniquely atmospheric and layered without depending on exaggerated aggression to do so. There’s also nothing wrong with a more amorphous, vibe-centric, and repetitive album experience, except that’s what we’ve already gotten in the past to a tee. Long story short, LOVE LASTS FOREVER is the kind of album that isn’t very nice to new people it meets on the street. Those who love this style will find much more quality and catharsis within it than we did, and they are probably more correct in their assessment as a result. But if you’re not content with reheated leftovers of your drunk-at-3AM go-to, this album will not convince you otherwise.

Playboi Carti Premieres New Music & Brings Out Opium During His Summer Smash Set

Playboi Carti was one of the headliners for Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash Festival this weekend, particularly on Saturday (June 15), and it was even more wild and chaotic than you’d expect in the best way. The crowd was absolutely electric, he went through his recent non-streaming singles for the first time in a live performance setting (excluding VULTURES listening parties), and he even brought out the rest of his Opium crew, including Ken Carson and Destroy Lonely. The Atlanta rapper had some leaks emerge recently, particularly one with Travis Scott, but more importantly, he took matters into his own hands. Reportedly, he debuted two unreleased tracks during this set.

Furthermore, a clip of one of these tracks (reportedly titled “ALL RED”) features DJ Swamp Izzo, who claimed over the weekend that Playboi Carti would drop something on Saturday. While that didn’t end up manifesting officially, at least this performance refueled a lot of hype and hope concerning his next album. As far as the sound of it, it’s a bit more bombastic and bouncy than the other singles… or at least, from what we can tell in the distorted and choppy clip below. We’ll take anything we can get at this point, and we’re sure there are cleaner leaks online.

Playboi Carti’s New Song Preview

However, this excitement around Playboi Carti’s new era hasn’t taken away any interest or mystique behind what we’ve already received from him. For example, fans comically reacted to audio of his raw ad-libs, something that contextualizes his tracks in a pretty interesting manner. Some folks might not consider what goes into a recording process, especially for something so volatile and energetic. Even though it just sounds funny at face value, it’s always compelling to see how a track came together and how they masked that process with magic.

Opium Joins Summer Smash

Of course, take all this with a massive, long-standing, and exceedingly frustrating grain of salt. Playboi Carti’s made promises before that never came to fruition, and it’s clear that there are a lot of factors in the album’s release that might not have much to do with the artist himself. But whenever he does have something big in the public eye, he always shows out and usually offers at least something new for fans to chew on. So we’ll sit patiently until a drop lets us loose in the pits.

Homixide Gang Deliver A Massive Banger With “R50”

Homixide Gang is part of Playboi Carti’s infamous Opium label. Their labelmates include the likes of Destroy Lonely and even Ken Carson. Overall, Homixide Gang is known for making bangers. Furthermore, they love using guitars and rage sounds that have become incredibly popular in the underground over these last few years. When Carti dropped Whole Lotta Red back in 2020, he changed the game, and Homixide Gang have been pushing that sound forward.

Recently, Homixide Gang came out with a brand-new banger called “R50.” They had been teasing this new track for quite some time, and on Friday, they finally released it with a music video. Below, you can see that aforementioned music video, in all of its glory. As for the song itself, it comes complete with some heavy guitars and 808s that are perfect for a moshpit. Meanwhile, the duo matches each others energy with some high-octane vocal performances that will make you want to run through a wall.

Homixide Gang Embody The Opium Aesthtic

This song was released in the midst of the recent rollout for Playboi Carti’s new project I Am Music. In fact, no one really knows what is happening with that album. Six singles have dropped since December of last year, but no album is in sight. Hopefully, that changes soon. As for Homixide Gang, we cannot wait to hear what they give us next. There is no doubt that they are at the forefront of one of hip-hop’s more hardcore contemporary movements.

Homixide Gang Are Electric On Their New Single “HI-VOLTAGE”

Homixide Gang are back with a new track. The duo has dropped the track “HI-VOLTAGE”, and its one of their most exciting releases to date. The energy of rappers Homixide Meechie and Homixide Beno live up to the title, as they spit over an earworm instrumental produced by UpMadeIt, jstcap and longtime Weeknd collaborator Cxdy.

Homixide Gang is signed to Playboi Carti’s Opium imprint, and their past songs have generally seen take a harder sound that their label boss. On “HI-VOLTAGE”, however, Meechie and Beno trade it the bass hits and synth of a track like “Lifestyle” for a looser sound. The way they flow and the instrumental are much closer in style to what Carti did on 2020’s Whole Lotta Red, and he melodic approach suits the duo.

Listen To “HI-VOLTAGE” By Homixide Gang

The sonic qualities of “HI-VOLTAGE” might sound victorious, but the lyrical content is bleak. Meechie and Beno rap about the violence they’ve both witnessed and caused in the streets. The gritty music video for the track ramps up this sense of danger by having the duo recreate scenes from the 2002 gangster film Shottas. The “HI-VOLTAGE” video was shot in the Miami neighborhood of Little Haiti.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single, “HI-VOLTAGE,” by Homixide Gang? Is this one of the duo’s strongest tracks, or one of their weakest? What is your favorite element of the track and why? Which rapper had the better verse? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Homixide Gang and the entire Opium label. Playboi Carti Ices Out The Weeknd And His Team With XO Opium Chains

Playboi Carti and The Weeknd are two artists who seem to be good friends. Although they don’t make a ton of music together, they have done so at least on one occasion. For instance, Carti was on “Popular” with Madonna and The Weeknd. This track was part of the The Idol soundtrack. Overall, one could argue that this song was the only memorable part of that show. Regardless, this is a song that some people felt was the true song of the summer of 2023. It did well on radio and was a streaming favorite as well.

Moving forward, The Weeknd is looking towards his next project. The same can be said of Playboi Carti, who has dropped five songs over the past few months. Amidst this rollout, it seems as though Carti has been feeling generous and appreciative of Abel. We know this because according to Kurrco on Twitter, Carti came through with some new chains for The Weeknd and his team. As you can see below, these are some Opium-ified XO chains. The double Os are found in on top and there are some spikes included around the outside.

Playboi Carti With A Gift

Overall, these chains are made with the express purpose of being flashy but also showcasing the longstanding relationship between Opium and XO. If you are a fan of either artist, you can definitely appreciate what is going on here. One has to wonder whether or not these two have a potential collaboration on the horizon. After all, this latest gift seemingly came out of nowhere. If Carti and The Weeknd do bring out a new song, it would be interesting to hear it in the context of Carti’s new sound.

Playboi Carti Brings Travis Scott Into The Opium-verse With “BACKR00MS”

Playboi Carti has been looking to drop new music this year. Overall, it is being speculated that he will be coming through with an album this month. He has dropped four singles so far. Firstly, he came through with “Different Day” which is also known as “UR THE MOON.” Secondly, he came through with “2024” which was an incredible departure from his previous sounds. Subsequently, we got “H00DBYAIR” which is arguably the best of the bunch. Most recently, on Monday night, he dropped “BACKR00MS” with none other than Travis Scott.

This is a track that was being promoted by a plethora of stars. Travis Scott himself, Kanye West, and even Ice Spice came through with their praise for the new track. At 9:30 PM EST last night, the music video for the track debuted, and it was certainly an impressive display. As you can see below, the video has a similar feel and aesthetic to the previous videos. However, this time around, we see Carti delivering a subdued performance that matches up with the production perfectly.

Playboi Carti x Travis Scott

So far, these new tracks are a huge departure from the sonics of Whole Lotta Red. Carti is embracing a new era, and so far, it is getting a lot of praise. With “BACKR00MS,” Carti is putting this new sound through its paces, and it seems to be working. While Travis Scott’s feature can also be described as subdued, he does a good job of staying in Carti’s pocket. Ultimately, it leads to a solid collaboration that helps cement the Opium founder’s new sound.

Let us know what you think of the new track, in the comments section below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for more news and updates from around the music world. We will always be sure to keep you informed on your favorite artists and their upcoming releases.

Playboi Carti Shows Up To Ken Carson’s Album Listening Party

Playboi Carti fans are taking just about anything they can get. The rapper hasn’t released any new material since 2020 when he surprise dropped Whole Lotta Red in December. Fans were expecting some new material later this year when Carti and his entire Opium label announced a tour. But that tour has since been delayed and it seems less and less likely each week that Carti will drop this year. He even had a verse he recorded taken off of the new Offset album after he allegedly refused to clear it.

But in the mean time, one of Carti’s label mates just released a new album that could potentially tide fans over for a bit. Ken Carson just dropped his new album A Great Chaos which contains a trio of Destroy Lonely appearances and a Lil Uzi Vert guest spot. Carti himself doesn’t appear on the project but he did show up at the album’s listening party overnight. In a video shared to Instagram Carti seems to be enjoying himself with fans while they hear the music for the first time. Check out the video below.

Playboi Carti At Ken Carson Listening Party

In the comments, fans mostly discuss how much they’re enjoying the new Ken Carson project. “Ken just dropped da greatest sh*t i ever heard,” one of the top comments reads. “Best album dropped this decade,” someone else agrees. Elsewhere fans are hyping up Carti as starting his own wave with the artists he has signed to his label.

Whenever Playboi Carti does eventually drop fans are expecting his track “Killers” to be included. After a radio debut ultimately fell through earlier this year, the song made its debut during Drake’s recent takeover of OVO radio. Despite already leaking months ago fans are still excited at the prospect of hearing the final version of the track. What do you think of Playboi Carti turning up and sharing videos from Ken Carson’s album listening party in NYC? Let us know in the comment section below.

Playboi Carti Updates Website Hinting At New Music

Playboi Carti fans have been waiting a long time for new music. His last studio album Whole Lotta Red dropped back in 2020. The rapper is often quite reclusive and doesn’t often make public announcements. Instead of the conventional methods of rolling out an album, many fans are expecting a surprise. Given that Carti is heading out on tour with his entire Opium label later this year, it stands to reason that he might release some new songs to play.

Now Playboi Carti is once again giving fans reasons to suspect new music is on the way. He made a simple update to his website, but one that has fans’ imaginations spinning. The addition of a “Music” tab on his site led many to believe that it will soon be filled with new material. Earlier this year he appeared on “Popular” alongside The Weeknd and Madonna. The track was released as a part of The Idol HBO series. Check out the changes to Carti’s website below.

Playboi Carti’s Website Includes Music Tab

Hints about new Playboi Carti music haven’t been hard to come by recently. DJ Scheme released a short video that featured a snippet of new music from the rapper. In the video, he’s doing a “deep voice” on the song which he’s done often recently. That included his performance on Travis Scott’s “FE!N,” from his smash hit new album Utopia. The song itself has been a pretty big hit as well. It debuted at number 5 on the Hot 100 and has stuck around on the chart ever since landing at number 44 this week.

Last month, snippets leaked that featured even more of Carti deploying his deep voice. The song hit the internet through an unknown source but gave fans a taste of what the rapper could be cooking up for his new album. What do you think of Playboi Carti teasing new music with an update to his website? Let us know in the comment section below.

Playboi Carti Thanks Fans For Supporting Opium Artists

Playboi Carti fans will be the first to let you know he hasn’t released any new music in a while. His last album Whole Lotta Red dropped back in 2020 and while he’s appeared on a few features since then it’s been mostly quiet. One of the big reasons for that is his focus on the management side of things. Carti has his own label imprint Opium and his two signees Destroy Lonely and Ken Carson have been dropping plenty of music in his absence.

During a recent show, Playboi Carti stopped to thank fans for their support of Opium. In the viral clip, he shouts out Destroy Lonely and Ken Carson by name and thanks the audience for continuing to support the rappers he signs to his label. He starts his speech off by thanking fans for coming to his shows and “waiting on him.” While fans have been waiting for a while Carti’s label artists carrying on his “rage” style must be somewhat of a consolation.

Playboi Carti Thanks His Fans

The primary thing Playboi Carti fans will tell you is that they’re starving for new music. After Lil Uzi teased that collaborations with Carti and Ken Carson could appear on Pink Tape, they were disappointed to find neither showed up in the tracklist. Carti was a part of one pretty substantial release recently. The Weeknd has been releasing new music every week alongside new episodes of his show The Idol. A few weeks ago he teamed up with Carti and pop legend Madonna for a new track called “Popular.” While the track was pretty well-received fans couldn’t help but notice that Carti is only very briefly on the track.

Despite the lack of new releases Playboi Carti fans are still feverishly devoted. He continues to sell out pretty much every show he plays. A few weeks ago at Summer Smash fans got pretty hyped for his set. They were so hyped that they literally chased him around after his set finished. What do you think of Playboi Carti’s message to fans about his Opium artists? Let us know in the comment section below.
