Deante Hitchcock Enlists DRAM, Big K.R.I.T., Westside Boogie, & More On “Once Upon A Time”

Deante Hitchcock has consistently proven to be a consistent artist who is constantly evolving. Coming out of Atlanta, Hitchcock has certainly been able to separate himself from his various contemporaries. Overall, this is an impressive feat and it has paid off in terms of garnering a fanbase. Although he may not be a mainstream artist, his fans treat him like one. They are constantly clamoring for new music, and with every release, they seem to crave more and more. Consequently, they were happy to hear about his new album Once Upon A Time.

This new project has been teased for quite some time, and now, it is finally here. Overall, there are 16 tracks to soak up here. Moreover, there are plenty of great features from artists like Westside Boogie, DRAM, and even Big K.R.I.T. That said, Hitchcock is the one who shines the most here. The album displays his immense range. Moreover, it also showcases the love that he has for his newborn son. In many ways, this is a concept album about fatherhood.

Deante’ Hitchcock Displays His Range

“At what was shaping up to be a turning point in my life, the world as we know it seemed to stop turning altogether. I watched our world change, and in the midst of it all, I had a son, became a father, and watched my world change as well,” Deante’ Hitchcock explained. “The word ‘son’ feels hella ironic to read, like the sun up in the sky that I used to stare at until it became an almost blinding blue bouncing ball of light, my son came into the world and brought a brightness into my life that could rival that of its homophone.”

This new project is a great step forward for the artist, and we’re sure many of you would agree. Hopefully, he has even more new music on the way. Let us know what you think of this album, in the comments below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news from the music world.

The Weeknd Announces “The Idol Vol. 1”

The Weeknd has announced a new project that will be arriving soon titled The Idol Vol. 1. The “Blinding Lights” singer teased the effort with a clip of himself in the studio on social media, Wednesday afternoon.

“THE IDOL VOL. 1 💿 coming soon (double fantasy & jealous guy just a taste),” The Weeknd wrote in the post. The clip comes after The Weeknd recently teased working on new music with Future during a rare live stream on Instagram. The two previously collaborated on “Low Life” from Future’s project, EVOL, as well as “All I Know” off of The Weeknd’s album, Starboy. During the live stream, The Weeknd also seemed to hint at making a surprise appearance during Coachella this weekend.

A new project for The Weeknd will mark his first since 2022’s critically acclaimed Dawn FM. With “Vol. 1” in the title, there’s also the implication that more projects will be on the way. The announcement comes as HBO prepares to release The Weeknd’s new series of the same name at some point this year. The show has dealt with numerous behind-the-scenes issues which were detailed by Rolling Stone in an exposé, earlier this year. They cited 13 sources close to the production who described it as a “shit show,” mentioning constant delays, reshoots, and rewrites.

HBO later addressed the piece in a statement. “The creators and producers of The Idol have been working hard to create one of HBO’s most exciting and provocative original programs. The initial approach on the show and production of the early episodes, unfortunately, did not meet HBO standards so we chose to make a change,” the statement read. “Throughout the process, the creative team has been committed to creating a safe, collaborative, and mutually respectful working environment.” The Weeknd also fired back at Rolling Stone with a video on Twitter featuring himself in character discussing the outlet.

Swizz Beatz Announces New Project Featuring Nas, Lil Wayne, & More

Swizz Beatz has announced that he has a new project on the way that will be releasing later this month. The upcoming five-track effort features collaborations with Nas, Lil Wayne, Fivio Foreign, and more. The legendary producer shared the details regarding the effort on Instagram, Tuesday.

“Let’s just get to it,” Swizz Beatz captioned the pictures. Other tracks on the project feature Jadakiss, Benny The Butcher, Lil Durk, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, and more. He says that he will be dropping the tracks on April 21.

The announcement comes after Swizz Beatz recently teased working on new music during an interview with Vibe. He told the outlet: “I’m just getting back into my zone music-wise. I’ve got a lot of music coming out, a lot of different genres of sounds. I’m just at a point where I just want to have fun with it again and just give people what they want, especially coming off Hip-Hop’s 50th and spilling that energy in the room. I was like ‘Man, I want to create some more space for us to be on those stages even more.’”

Outside of music, Swizz Beatz also discussed the current status of Verzuz, which is on hiatus for the time being. Speaking more with Vibe, Swizz Beatz explained that “something is cooking.” He elaborated: “Big, big, big announcements. The world know if they haven’t heard nothing from Verzuz for this long that, sh*t, something’s cooking. That’s a smart person [that’s] thinking that something is cooking. It’s been fun. We just.. Me and Tim wanted to reevaluate. We started in the basement and it went global, worldwide and sometimes you’ve got to pull it in and give the 2.0 version because you know what people want, you know, what you could have done different. You know, it’s like starting in a Mom & Pop’s store. Now, it’s like a major thing, so we’ve got to make it an even more major thing.”

Jim Jones Says Jadakiss Missed Opportunity To Drop A Project After Their “Verzuz”

Jim Jones says that Jadakiss missed a “hell of an opportunity” to drop a project after The LOX went head-to-head with Dipset on Verzuz in August 2021. Speaking with AllHipHopTV during a new interview, Jones explained that anything Jadakiss could’ve put out would’ve gone platinum.

“‘Kiss reaped a lot of benefits from the Verzuz, man,” Jones said in the discussion. “I mean, we all do things different and shit like that, but he had a hell of an opportunity to do a lot. I wish that he would have dropped a project at that time because it didn’t even matter what he would have put out in that window of time that he had. He could’ve just took eight records he had in the stash and just put them bitches out, that bitch was going platinum.”

From there, he added: “That was one thing I wish he would’ve did as me being a fan and me being a n***a in the industry. Like, ‘Yo, man, it’s a moment, he’s supposed to go. Next day, single out, everything. I’m in the studio right now with Swizz tonight, like n***a!’”

While he didn’t end up capitalizing on the moment to release new music, Jadakiss did put in work behind the scenes. Speaking to Complex in 2022, Jadakiss revealed that he used his leverage at the time to renegotiate his record contract with Def Jam. “My numbers went up for hostings and walkthroughs, for shows, and TV cameos,” he said at the time. “Just in general my numbers went up. It also showed Def Jam that they got to do the right thing [and] restructure my contract. It really showed the world my true worth, what I can do.” Last month, Jadakiss announced that he’s working on a new mixtape titled Kiss the South, but didn’t provide a release date.

Chiiild Wishes Listeners “Better Luck In The Next Life” On New Album

Before the weekend comes to an end, we’ve got more New Music Friday leftovers for your consideration. This week, Chiiild joins the roster of artists unleashing new albums, following singles like “Bon Voyage” and “Good For Now” featuring Lucky Daye with his 12-track Better Luck In The Next Life album. It arrived at midnight on March 3rd and has since earned the creative an abundance of new listeners.

Besides the aforementioned guest appearance, Chiiild also worked with a host of other talented lyricists. Alina Baraz and Caitlyn Scarlett join him on “Hell And High Water,” while Charlotte Cardin helped out with “I Hope I Packed A Parachute.” The rest of the album’s songs, the Canadian experimentalist handles on his own.

Chiiild and Lucky Daye are Feeling “Good For Now”

On his link-up with Daye, Chiiild markedly reflects on how important it is to stay present. “Tell me that we’re dreaming, don’t say that we’re in love, uh / Whatever this is, it’s good for now, at night we’ve been restless,” he sings. “You say that we’re destined, I say you’re just caught in the moment/ When you’re close, I get reckless, laying in the wreckage.”

In a press release, the “Pirouette” hitmaker described his new album as “a bit of an autobiographical record that covers all of the things that [he loves] and some of the things [he’s] gone through.” He noted that it’s a “very honest” body of work that only begins to tell his personal story and answer questions not only about his career but also about who he is as a person.

Stream Chiiild’s new album, Better Luck In The Next Life on Spotify or Apple Music below. Afterward, tell us what your top three favourites from the tracklist are in the comments. If you’re in need of more release recommendations, find them on our weekly R&B Season playlist update here.

2KBaby Shares New Album, “Scared 2 Love”

Louisville rapper and singer 2KBaby just released his latest project, the heart-ached but mellow Scared 2 Love. Following previous singles like “Don’t Love Me Now” featuring charlieonnafriday, this tape expands on that sentimental relationship narrative. Despite the focused theme and similar stories running through each tracks, this album boasts effective emotional and sonic variety. Moreover, the 22-year-old plays with upbeat tempos, melancholy verses, aggressive delivery, and melodic passages. Furthermore, Scared 2 Love explores love through a lot of different mindsets, and there’s something to listen to at every phase of a relationship.

Furthermore, anyone can relate to 2K’s perspectives, and he takes advantage of that with a dynamic tracklist. Moreover, its first half is peppered with piano-led trap ballads like “IDKY” and “Rain.” However, the opener “Angel” and “Mood Swings” amp the energy up with rage-inspired and drill cuts, respectively. Even if this tape is thematically focused, he still injects tracks with similar energy to his previous mixtapes. For example, the last track “Overdue” contains more energetic flows like on last year’s Sorry 4 The Hate. Still, the rapper’s eccentric personality and hardened perspectives shine bright through his vocal performances. While his lyricism may be straightforward, he relies on melodies and atmospheres over words to get his emotions across.

While this project might focus mostly on connection and 2K’s own struggles with them, it’s not all such a downer. Still, what did you think of 2KBaby’s latest offering, Scared 2 Love? However you feel, let us know in the comments and check out the album’s versatile tracklist down below. Also, if you haven’t heard the project yet, you can find the tape on your preferred streaming service. CRIMEAPPLE Becomes “El Cantante” On New Album

CRIMEAPPLE just released his latest album, El Cantante, following an incredibly prolific 2022. Moreover, the last full-length we heard from the Jersey rapper was the 9-track Sin Cortar in collaboration with DJ Muggs. While APPLE has some help on El Cantante, he mostly takes full control of what he’s putting on wax.

Furthermore, features include RLX and BoriRock on the track “Together.” Also, collaboration is a key part of his artistry, because it’s a key part of hip-hop. CRIMEAPPLE focuses on sharp and boastful East Coast lyricism, atmospheric instrumentals, and abstract beats. You might’ve caught a feature of his on projects like Westside Gunn’s Supreme Blientele.

Also, he frequently works with the likes of DJ Muggs, with whom he dropped Cartagena in 2021. Moreover, they’ve done more than a few songs and projects together at this point. Still, CRIMEAPPLE also works with a lot of other producers associated with the likes of Boldy James, Rome Streetz, and the rest of the current drumless wave.

“Doing another album was a no-brainer” Muggs and CRIMEAPPLE told Complex. “The chemistry was there from jump. Outside of that, it’s a family affair at this point. When we link it’s a movie, quite literally. We give listeners an experience more so than just another album. We take you places you probably won’t ever go on your own.”

Overall, this album is a concise and quality collection of chill, dense beats, impressive writing, and as always, touching homages and references to CRIMEAPPLE’s Colombian descent. Furthermore, sometimes it’s in the form of samples, and sometimes the project will switch to Spanish passages. However, the roots run quite deep. The title “El Cantante” is most likely a reference to Héctor Lavoe, the legendary Puerto Rican salsa singer. Moreover, he was on the label Fania Records, the leading salsa label whose logo is imitated on CRIMEAPPLE’s album cover.

Still, what did you think of CRIMEAPPLE’s latest album, El Cantante? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments and check out the tape’s tracklist down below. Also, if you haven’t heard the project yet, you can find it on your preferred streaming service. As always, come back to HNHH for the best new music released each week.
