Lopez looks capable of doing much more than that in the official posters for The Mother, her forthcoming Netflix film. The photos were shot by Annie Leibovitz.
“Happy Monday!!! Here are the new posters for my upcoming film THE MOTHER. Only on @NetflixMay 12. (PS trailer drops tomorrow!!!!),” Lopez tweeted today, April 10.
Directed by Niki Caro, The Mother‘s official teaser dropped last September. “A deadly female assassin comes out of hiding to protect the daughter that she gave up years before, while on the run from dangerous men,” the description teases.
The intense one-minute clip finds Lopez training in the snowy woods, driving with reckless abandon down a crowded street, and shooting guns. “You saw what was out there,” she says, presumably to her on-screen daughter. “It’s gonna keep coming. If there’s trouble, come find me.”
The Mother also stars Joseph Fiennes, Lucy Paez, Omari Hardwick, Paul Raci, and Gael Garcia Bernal and will stream on Netflix beginning on 5/12.
Though she spent several years out of the spotlight after being cancelled among some of Hollywood’s most elite, Mo’Nique is back in a big way. Her most recent work comes in the form of a Netflix comedy special called My Name Is Mo’Nique, in which she chiefly comes out as a bisexual woman. According to the Precious actress, she spent many of her younger years ashamed of the fantasies she had and even avoided speaking to her family about such thoughts out of fear. Her grandmother, MiMi, apparently “could not come to grips that she had a gay daughter” of her own, causing “confusion” for the young girl at the time.
“And I felt cowardly when my grandmother left because I couldn’t tell my grandmother who her granddaughter really was,” the 55-year-old told the audience while breaking down in tears. “I adored how she adored me,” Mo’Nique added, recalling fond memories of MiMi’s affectionate nature. “I couldn’t tell my grandmother my secret thoughts and my fantasies ’cause I… Did not want her to leave this earth thinking she was a failure. Because had I told her my secret thoughts, she would have left thinking she had failed,” she later said.
Comedian Gets Vulnerable During My Name Is Mo’Nique Special
In a shocking revelation, Mo’Nique then admitted her bisexuality to the audience, noting that she’s “not all the way” lesbian. The Maryland native noted that she was never able to admit her truth to MiMi, as she found it incredibly difficult to confess her desires “out loud.” The embattled entertained continued, “Do you know how hard it is to keep a secret? Secrets cause cancer. When you’re born with that, there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. Nothing. And please understand I tried.”
During her Netflix special, she recalled sleeping with “as many men as she could” to avoid any speculation of “something [being] wrong” with her. “I promised that I would never tell anyone, that I would take that to my grave. Because I saw how they treated the people in my family with that ‘disease.’ Because they made us believe it was a ‘disease,’ right?” Thankfully, Mo’Nique eventually found a confidant in her husband, Sidney Hicks. “‘I want to be with another woman sexually,’” she reportedly told him. “He looked at me so beautifully and so patient and so loving and said, ‘Bitch, me too,’” the starlet quipped. Lost in Space
While Lost in Space isn’t exactly a new show, it remains a strong show for those new to Netflix or those who have been surfing the platform for a long while. Based on the 1960’s version of the show with the same name, this show is a rare one in today’s media environment simply because it cannot be canceled. That’s right, you for sure will see at least three seasons of this show because three seasons of the older version of this show already exist. Feel free to get comfy and get invested, because the show does have an already-written conclusion just waiting to be developed.

You
You is a show that focuses on the human nature, the morality of obsession, and the limits of love. Based on novels written by Caroline Kepnes, You is a story about deranged love between a bookstore owner and an aspiring author. The story focuses on the limits of love and how twisted it can become when it buds within a twisted mind and psyche. If you’re into twisted thrillers or shows akin to Dexter, this Netflix show is definitely for you.
The Sandman
The Sandman by Neil Gaiman was once thought to be unconvertable to a movie or series. Some parts of media simply don’t translate well, losing nuances in the process. The comics have such a large scope that it was thought to be impossible to include all the necessary details through a conversion. However, somewhat recently on Netflix there’s an adaptation, strikingly faithful to the original, just as everyone wants. The story focuses on the Lord of Dreams imprisoned by a warlock who is seeking the secrets behind immortality. The story begins when Morpheus is released to mend what he has broken throughout human existence and time. Overall, the cast is expansive and so is the material, so if you’re looking for a full show to sink your teeth into, this would be it.
Physical: 100
Physical: 100 is a Netflix physical fitness-focused show that challenges athletes from around the world to a competition that pushes their limits and sets their physical standards high. Each episode features different courses, challenges and feats that competitors must finish in order to move on to the next round. These can include anything from obstacle courses to endurance tests, to weight-lifting competitions. The dramatic tension, setup, and presentation in the show are akin to past renditions of the format, such as Fear Factor. Without the gruel nature, Physical: 100 makes for a great show for anyone who enjoys a little thrill and test of nature.
All competitors in the show have different backgrounds. In other words, you aren’t just watching a bunch of gym-nuts fight to see who can lift the most, you’re watching a competition between a diverse cast, with people from every walk of life. They have strengths, weaknesses, and a reason to keep going as they fight for that top spot.
Cunk on Earth
Cunk on Earth is a satirical take on life, with Diane Morgan, a British comedian, playing the character of Philomena Cunk. Throughout the show, Cunk travels through time, exploring humanity’s history and leaving witty comments all along the way.
The show is a parody that goes through history, getting all the facts wrong but having a hilarious time along the way. If you find yourself to be a fan of that kind of humor, or a fan of shows akin to Doctor Who, this kind of entertainment might be right up your alley. Overall, the show is a great whimsical take on history, science, and more, providing education with a little bit of sugar through humor.
Cunk visits historical sites, ponders some big questions, and cracks a few irreverent jokes all the while. If you’re a history or science buff with a need for a little more laughter in your life, this show is absolutely perfect for you. Even if you’re a bit uninformed like me, this show is still likely to make you laugh and learn something new.
Vikings: Valhalla
Vikings: Valhalla is a sequel series to the original Viking series, presented by History Channel. This second sister show follows a Viking group as they explore the lands of England, Russia and Normandy and conquer. The show includes many types of characters, including warriors, rulers, and Viking leaders. The production value for Vikings: Valhalla is high, meaning you won’t find many weaknesses concerning the environments, ambiance, and settings used.
The cast is robust and full of motivations, giving you characters you can follow while taking in this forgotten but beautiful world and perspective. The show has robust attention to historical accuracy, making it a great opportunity for you and perhaps a history buff you know in your life. Overall, from the costume design to environmental inclusivities to the language used by the cast, the show is accurate through and through.
Cowboy Bebop
Cowboy Bebop is an Netflix animated series that focuses on a sci-fi world flung far into the future. The year is 2071, spacecraft is as common as a beat-up car, and space travel from one planet to the next is as simple as a walk to the drugstore. The story follows a few bounty hunters living paycheck to paycheck, trying to catch the wanted across a vast sea of stars.
If you’re into dynamic characters that have their own stories to tell, you’re in luck. While the show remains mostly episodic, there are episodes that take detours to tell specific stories about key characters. Not everything may connect by the end of the season. But, before you get there you’ll have a good knowledge of where everyone’s going and why.
Also, another reason to give this show a try is because of the stunning visuals at play. If you enjoy hand-drawn 2d animation with great colors and motion, Cowboy Bebop pulls no punches. It’s an artistic show, from the soundtrack to what you see on screen. While there are live-action versions, the original is the one you need to see, not a remake.

Also, it raises important questions about what it means to be human and how people can hold onto their humanity in the face of unimaginable horror.
Chris Rock triumphantly returned to the comedy center stage by debuting his much anticipated Selective Outrage comedy special on Netflix. It was the first comedy special ever aired live on the streaming platform. We had also been waiting for a year for Rock to publicly respond to the now infamous Will Smith slap at the Oscars. He did respond, and it was in the most Chris Rock way imaginable.
Chris clapped back at his former friend with a scathing yet hilarious rant about his wife’s infidelity. Additionally, he labeled Jada Pinkett as manipulative. This is because she had allegedly tried to convince him not to host the Oscars. Her reasons, according to Chris Rock, were because Will Smith had not been nominated that year. He also gave his unique perspectives on fatherhood, racism, and of course, the Kardashians. Selective Outrage debuted live on March 4th and is currently available to stream on Netflix. The stand-up special adds to Chris Rock’s impressive comedy discography. He has won numerous awards for his comedy specials throughout his remarkable career. Here is a list of his top-rated comedy specials.
Big Ass Jokes – 1994
This was Chris Rock’s official debut into televised stand-up comedy specials. HBO produced Big Ass Jokes in 1994 as part of their weekly Half-Hour Comedy Series. The special proved to be pivotal for Chris’ career. He had just exited a three-year stint at Saturday Night Live the previous year. Big Ass Jokes displayed the comedian’s uniqueness in subject matter and delivery.
Themes of the special included his childhood and relationship with his mother, and his preference for older women. Furthermore, the comedy special sees Chris giving his controversial take on school busing. His style of comedy was refreshing and a big departure from the skit-focused style of comedy presented on SNL. Many entertainment pundits argue that Big Ass Jokes was the beginning of the raise to super-stardom for the comedian from New York. Chris’ debut special has a 7.2/10 rating on IMDb.
Bring the Pain – 1996
If his debut comedy special was impressive, then his sophomore, Bring the Pain, cemented his name as a comedy titan. The comedy special is Rock’s most critically acclaimed stand-up performance to date. Chris had already made a name for himself at SNL and playing supporting roles in movies like New Jack City (1991) and Boomerang (1992). Bring the Pain premiered in June 1996 as part of HBO Comedy Half-Hour. In the special, Chris Rock talks about dating, marriage and race relations in America.
The comedy special additionally dives into the polarizing murder trial of OJ Simpson. But, perhaps the most controversial part of the special was a piece about “Niggas vs. Black People”. In the approximately 12-minute routine, Rock explains that there is a subgroup of black people he refers to as ‘niggas’. In his view, this subgroup glorifies ignorance and sloth, and generally paints a negative image on the rest of the black community.
Unfortunately, the backlash he received from the routine caused Rock to remove it from the special. In an interview after the premier, he said that he felt like the routine empowered racist individuals to use the n-word. The routine was never performed live again. Bring the Pain has an IMDb score of 8.2. Additionally, it won Rock two Emmy Awards. Chris inked a deal for a weekly HBO talk show called The Chris Rock Show as a result of the success of the special.
Bigger and Blacker – 1999
Recorded in the Apollo Theater in Harlem, Bigger and Blacker premiered in July 1999. It was Chris’ third HBO comedy special. Thematically, Rock stays in the lane of his first two specials. He discusses race relations, relationships, political correctness and gun violence. But, this time, his views on these themes had expanded and his creativity in delivery was sharper.
Chris had been dubbed “the funniest man in America by Vanity Fair by the time Bigger and Blacker was premiering. He had starred in commercially successful movies like Beverly Hills Ninja (1997), and Lethal Weapon 4 (1998). His career was on cruise control. Furthermore, Bigger and Blacker won Chris a Grammy for Best Spoken Comedy Album in 2000.
Never Scared – 2004
Primetime Emmy winner Joel Gallen directed Chris Rock’s fourth HBO stand-up special. Never Scared premiered in April 2014. It was taped at the DAR Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Chris provides impeccable satirical content on complex topics such as drug legalization and wealth inequality in America, but also explains his take on light-hearted topics like the complexities of women’s happiness to balance the set. Additionally, Rock had recently become a father and he delved into the experiences of raising his daughter.
The 2000s was the age of the Compact Disk (CD), and the comedy special was also available on CD for purchase and lease. Never Scared proved to be another successful comedy special for Chris Rock as he won another Grammy for Best Comedy Album in 2006. It has an 8.0/10 rating in IMDb
Kill the Messenger – 2008
This special was taped in several cities during his international comedy tour. Parts of the recordings were then edited together to create his fifth comedy special. The tour stops in the special include the Carnival City Casino in Johannesburg, HMV Hammersmith Apollo in London, and the Apollo Theater in New York City. Kill the Messenger also served as Rock’s final comedy special with HBO. Topics in the 79-minute special included; sex, the n-word, fuel prices, the 2008 presidential campaigns, and the possibility of a black president. It premiered on September 2008 to critical acclaim winning two Emmy awards for the comedy star.
Tambourine – 2018
Chris is a little tame and composed in the Tambourine comedy special, but does not compromise on the funny. The comedy star returned back to his home town to bare his soul about his personal life. He spends a substantial part of the special narrating about fatherhood, his infidelity and the resulting divorce. But, rock’s comedy performances are never complete without giving the audience his unique takes of politics of the day and Tambourine is no different.
Tambourine initiated Rock’s relationship with streaming giant Netflix. Bo Burnham splendidly took on the directorial duties of the approximately one and a half hour project. The stand-up special received positive reviews on its premier. However, Rock released an extended cut called the Total Blackout: The Tambourine, without Bo’s input and the project received largely mixed reviews. Total Blackout is available for streaming on Netflix.
Selective Outrage – 2023
Thanks to an unfortunate incident of assault at the hands of Will Smith, the world had been waiting for Chris to publicly respond. There was no better way of giving his thoughts and feelings about the incident other than in a comedy special – Chris Rock style. This incident perhaps made Selective Outrage the most anticipated comedy special in recent times.
The now veteran comedian starts off the special by ticking all the boxes of a classic Chris Rock stand-up. Raising privileged children, a hilarious take on racism using yoga pants, and the Kardashian family were part of the subject matter. Between routines, he would hilariously repeat throughout the special that he does not want any problem with another rapper, referencing Will Smith’s past career.
The tail end of Selective Outrage starts with Chris speaking about his support for Will Smith’s career over the years. But, he would then bring back to the lime light the infidelity issue in the Smith’s family. Finally, he then said that the reason he did not retaliate during the Oscars is because he was raised right. His parents told him never to fight in front of white people – and the mic was dropped to a roaring applause from the audience.
Halloween is still many months away, but a recent horror arrival on Netflix has left some viewers feeling “scarred for life” after watching. The British flick is called The Strays. According to many Twitter users, it has an eerily similar feeling to Jordan Peele’s fan favourite, Get Out. It previously premiered on the streamer at the end of February and has managed to keep the internet talking in the weeks since.
The Nathaniel Martello-White-directed project follows Neve (played by Ashley Madekwe), a light-skinned Black woman living in a suburban English town. She works as a deputy headmistress and is married to Ian (Justin Salinger), a white man. For the most part, Neve seems to avoid embracing her biracial status. When two strangers arrive in town, however, her picture-perfect life begins to unravel in ways you could never imagine.
The Strays Trailer
In the Netflix trailer for The Strays, the troubled woman nearly crashes her car, containing her two children, upon seeing the mysterious figures. Later in the clip, we see Neve and Ian entertaining guests while a creepy man watches on from the pavement outside. “What’s that at the window? Someone’s there, can’t you see?” she asks. Surprisingly, the other guests are left confused, asking the hostess, “What’s wrong with you tonight?”
Easily one of the streamer’s most chilling arrivals so far this year, The Strays has plenty of people speaking their minds on Twitter. “Guys I’m watching ‘The Strays’ on Netflix and I’m just thinking about how Jordan Peele has quite literally created his own film genre,” one user pointed out. “‘Get Out’ literally has sons now I’m actually so shocked lol.”
Twitter Reacts to Netflix’s New Horror Film
“I can honestly say this is the wildest f*cking movie I’ve ever seen,” another person wrote. “Just finished watching ‘The Strays’ on Netflix and I think I’m [scarred] for life because what the hell did I just watch!” someone else vented after viewing the film. Keep scrolling to read more Twitter reactions, and check back later for more pop culture news updates.
With an opening commentary funnier than a Chris Rock and Kevin Hart show, You People has become a fan favorite for its epic cast of Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, Nia Long, Lauren London, and more. Its hilarity is dry and blunt with a hint of irony. You People is not only funny, but has a serious tone as well. The movie, co-produced by Jonah Hill, includes racial inequities of what Black and Muslim cultures face in today’s world.
“I feel like Views Drake. I feel like I’m alone. I don’t have Certified Lover Boy Drake energy right now.”-You People
As a Jewish extrovert, Ezra, played by Jonah Hill who looks “like a dad who lost his kid at Coachella,” opens the movie with his infamous belly-aching acting, yet, somehow better than ever before jokes. He and his friend Mo, played by Sam Jo, banter back and forth. Somehow Drake gets pulled into the conversation, and hey, why not, they already joked about Obama being gay — continue to go back and forth as Ezra says to Mo, “I feel like Views Drake. I feel like I’m alone. I don’t have Certified Lover Boy Drake energy right now. I’m at an Italian restaurant by myself drinking Manischewitz out of a goblet, wondering to myself when is it my turn to feel deep happiness and connection?”
Days later, Ezra jumps into the backseat of a girl’s Uber. Thinking he’s being racially insincere by assuming a young black woman might only be on the road to haul others to their way, begins to yell and beat Ezra in a panic. He smoothly jokes himself out of the situation and finds out, Amira, as played by Lauren London, was lost on her way to work. After the two conclude their back-and-forth arguing, they agree to go on a date together.
Ezra and Amira Share the Same Carefree Spirit
Amira, like Ezra, is a classy, carefree spirit who upon going out with Ezra, greets his energy perfectly with her matching hippie attire. At first, some family and friends of the two can’t understand why they are dating one another, but that doesn’t stop them from growing closer. The real kick-off though was when Ezra complimented Amira on their date saying there was no box that could define her. Taken aback with honor, she admits that he’s real, and the two fall even harder.
Ezra and Amira Seek Approval from Each others Families
Within the first thirty minutes of the movie, and only after a couple of dates together, Ezra goes as far as buying a ring in plans to marry Amira. It’s no rock, but it’s an heirloom from the Holocaust. Though Ezra comes from a traditional Jewish family who would usually prefer to marry within the religion, his mom expresses happiness when he tells her his plan. However, Amira’s family wasn’t the easiest to win over. While asking for approval to marry their daughter, Ezra is met with uncomfortability and jokes his way through the first conversation with Amira’s parents. He even bluntly states that Jesus is both black and Jewish.
Amira’s father, Akbar, played by Eddie Murphy, having no want in Ezra’s nonsense. He leans in with his arms crossed over his chest to ask, “So you wanna marry my daughter?” Ezra responds, “Yes, yes I do.” With no hesitation at all, Akbar says, “Well Ezra, you can try.”
Though Ezra was not received with the blessing of Amira’s parents, he still dropped to one knee to propose with what actually would be a very romantic proposal, as he warm-heartedly confesses his love for Amira. She happily says “Of course.” Ezra, with a newfound confidence, proceeds to change a few things in his life. He quits his job to start a podcast on black culture, but only after expending the couple from buying a house for the two. Worried about their finances, Amira’s parents warn her not to move forward with Ezra.
As the movie continues, the families attempt to get to know one another by sharing stories of their heritages. As they talk about the differences in their racial adversaries, the two families inadvertently bond. Both have gone through adversity like slave ownership and the Holocaust.
Amira’s Dad Razzes Ezra, While His Mom Embarrasses Herself in Front of Amira’s Bridesmaids
Amira asks Ezra to spend quality time with her dad, while Amira agrees to do the same with his mother. Akbar takes Ezra to his barbershop where he’s jokingly called “a pigment-challenged friend,”. The shop is located in an inner city where people are predominantly black. Ezra’s Mom, Shelley, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, takes Amira to a beauty spa and makes a scene for thinking the beautician was allowing someone else ahead of them because of Amira being black. Shelley then embarrasses herself even more by accidentally ripping a wig off of one of Amira’s bridesmaids’ head. Though apprehensive, the families continue with their efforts to get to know one another.
As the romantic comedy continues, Ezra faces the daunting reality that Akbar still doesn’t want him to marry his daughter. He tells him he’s not the right one in a hard truth man to man chat. Ezra responds with a lengthy speech on why he’s the perfect match for Amira. He also states all the reasons why Akbar was in the wrong for razzing him. Amira and Shelley seemingly go through the same conflict right before the wedding. As Amira finally stands her ground with Shelley and says she needs to stop showing her off like a shiny toy to all of her friends. Though everyone was coming from a genuine place, each side of the family had an equal point in the matter.
Amira Struggles with Decision to Marry Ezra
After having gone through more hardship than she anticipated, Amira calls off the wedding. Ezra ends up having great success with his podcast with his co-host best friend, Mo. He talks about how hip-hop shaped his life and that he’s proud to represent the culture by just being him. He tries to date other women, but nobody is measuring up to Amira. With the help of Akbar’s friend, Amira’s dad soon realizes that his daughter and Ezra do belong together. He calls Shelley with hopes to bring their two kids back together. This ends with a surprise meet-up between the four of them.
You People Ends In A Happily-Ever-After…
You Peopleends in a wedding. Both Akbar and Shelley apologize and give their blessings for them to get married if they so wish. Ezra and Amira quickly decide to get back together. Little did they really know the plans of their parents, as they surprised the couple with a wedding attended by all of their family and friends, knowing they’d choose love over loss. Ezra and Amira walk down the aisle and the wise-cracking Jewish boy lives happily ever with his free-spirited Muslim wife. You People is available now on Netflix.
