Rappers Who Starred In Their Own Reality TV Shows

Over the years, many rappers have made successful ventures into reality TV shows. There have been several reasons for the transitions, too. For some, it’s a chance to be more vulnerable with fans, and for others, a convenient cash grab or platform to fame. Many of these reality TV shows have offered a closer look at the lives of these rappers. Their families are often involved, and many exciting dynamics are revealed.

As expected, not all shows are successful right off the bat. Moreover, those that score huge ratings have a familial touch to them. Reality TV is littered with many famous names, from legends in the game to newer acts in the industry. Furthermore, they have delivered some important pop culture moments and timeless memes.

Rev Run – Run’s House

Run’s House is credited for paving the way for other rappers to break into Hip Hop related reality TV shows. The series focuses on the life and family of Joseph Simmons, popularly known as Rev Run. His fleet of talented kids, his brother Russell, and his wife Justine contributed to the show’s success. Run’s House was also noteworthy because it didn’t shy away from deeply emotional moments the family shared.

The series ventured into the death of Simmons’ daughter Victoria, showcasing the family’s vulnerability. It also packed several hilarious and heartwarming moments for great TV content. Run’s House and its success greatly influenced other reality TV shows featuring rappers. The series ended in 2011 after six seasons.

Ice-T – Ice Loves Coco

Hip Hop veteran turned actor Ice-T was initially skeptical of welcoming cameras into his home. With the help of his wife, Coco, the pair delivered some fun reality TV moments. Ice Loves Coco offered viewers a softer side to the hard-hitting rapper. The series delved into the couple’s personal moments, from dealing with Hurricane Sandy to the birth of Coco’s sister’s baby. Ice Loves Coco aired on E! for three seasons.

Ice-T famously revealed that he left reality TV to not overstay his welcome. The rapper and actor decided not to give the public deeper access to his family. Additionally, Ice and Coco had begun plans to star in their own talk show. However, these plans did not come to fruition.

NellyNellyville

One of many mainstream rappers to venture into reality TV shows is Nelly. The Grammy winner starred in his own show between 2014 and 2015. Nellyville, named after his acclaimed sophomore album, showed the Grammy winner in his element as a family man. Nelly took in his deceased sister’s children and created a loving, blended family. All their antics, highs, and lows were documented for two seasons and 21 episodes.

Snoop DoggSnoop Dogg’s Father Hood

Besides his career as a rap legend, Snoop Dogg has been known to be a lover of family. Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood brought his relationships with his wife and children to the forefront. Snoop and his family welcomed viewers into their loving and fun dynamic. The series also had a few notable guest stars, from David Beckham to John Cena and Keyshia Cole.

There were several interesting plots in the series. Snoop let fans in to see how he prepared to host the 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards. He also educated his son Corde about sex, traveled around the globe, and even got his Man Cave reinvented. Like other reality TV shows featuring rappers, Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood showed a more delicate side to the icon.

T.I. – T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle

T.I., his wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris, and their kids starred in The Family Hustle. Similar in style to Run’s House, The Family Hustle featured a large cast of the rapper’s children. The reality TV show also lasted much longer than most, with six seasons and 100 episodes. The Family Hustle had several hilarious moments but kept an emotional balance throughout.

T.I. and Tiny’s relationship was a noteworthy highlight in the series. The matriarch of the Harris family held things down during low moments they faced. The Family Hustle also showcased the Harris children growing into their own as teenagers. The reality TV show was undoubtedly a hit for VH1.

Flavor Flav – Flavor of Love

Flavor of Love is responsible for introducing Tiffany “New York” Pollard to the world at large. While that is reason alone for its timelessness, the series offered so much more. Flavor Flav, veteran rapper and founding member of Public Enemy, was on a journey to find love. Several women vied for the legend’s hand, and that made for quality TV.

Flavor of Love is still culturally relevant today with many legendary catfights, disses, and a historic “Beyoncé” meme. While other rappers starred in family-based reality TV shows, this was much more chaotic and exciting. Flavor Flav famously refused to wed any of the girls on the show, too. Due to its popularity, it launched several spin-offs.

Various Rappers – Love & Hip Hop

Love & Hip Hop is one of the most popular reality TV shows to house many famous rappers. Megastars like Cardi B have Love & Hip Hop as the platform that shot them to mainstream fame. Many other household names have also appeared in the reality TV show: Soulja Boy, Remy Ma, Joe Budden, Safaree Samuels, and many more.

Nelly, Skai Jackson, Carole Baskin to Star in Upcoming Season of 'Dancing With the Stars'

Fight fans were in an uproar over the weekend at the result of the Devin Haney – Vasiliy Lomachenko fight for the lightweight championship. Nelly also wasn’t feeling it.

In case you missed it, Haney won the fight unanimously in one of the more questionable decisions in boxing’s recent history.

Hitting Instagram, Nelly let his feelings fly about the match.

“I’m just letting y’all know I’m done with boxing,” Nelly said. “They will never get another motherfucking dime out of me. This is a travesty. I am done with boxing.

“Devin Haney is a very talented boxer. I have nothing against that young man. Much respect. He was not the better man today. At most, he got a draw. Man, that man [Lomachenko] got robbed.”

Nelly was at the last big fight, Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia, and ignited talk about his romance with Ashanti while there.

Ashanti’s Best Hip Hop Collabs: Ja Rule, Fat Joe, & More

Ashanti Is best known for her R&B classics and Hip Hop collaborations. It’s no wonder she was crowned “The Princess of Hip Hop and R&B” so early in her career. After her eponymous debut album was released in 2002, she became a global sensation. Her debut single, “Foolish,” topped the Billboard Hot 100 and announced her presence with a bang. From then on, Ashanti successfully became the go-to singer for Hip Hop collabs. She has since been featured on a number of tracks by some of the biggest rappers around.

Ashanti has partnered with many celebrities as a singer and songwriter. In 2022, her efforts were further crowned with a coveted star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She remains one of the most influential musical artists of all time. Additionally, Ashanti’s Hip Hop collabs also helped popularize the rapper and singer duo. Her longtime partnerships with Ja Rule, and features on tracks by Fat Joe, Plies, and more, have made her a Hip Hop darling.

With over two decades of success, Ashanti’s career is quite enviable. Like many other musicians, she also made a reasonably notable crossover into acting. Her most famous roles are in John Tucker Must Die and Army Wives. She held the 2000s down as a singer with several notable Hip Hop collabs.

“Always On Time” (2001)

“Always on Time” is unarguably one of the most successful songs of the 2000s. The 2001 single is one of many timeless Hip Hop collabs by Ja Rule and Ashanti. “Always on Time” was released as the second single from Ja Rule’s third album, Pain is Love. “Always on Time” further reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100, marking Ashanti’s first No. 1 song. It also put the singer on the map ahead of her mega-successful debut single “Foolish” was released. “Always on Time” is the song that set eyes on Ashanti and kicked off her journey in the public eye.

“What’s Luv?” (2002)

“What’s Luv?” is a single by Fat Joe that features Ja Rule and Ashanti vocals. Released in February of 2002, the song dominated airwaves around the world. It was the second single off Fat Joe’s fourth album, Jealous Ones Still Envy (J.O.S.E). “What’s Luv?” was Ashanti’s second Hip Hop collab that performed exceptionally well on charts worldwide. The single also reached the penultimate spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and was blocked from the top spot by Ashanti’s debut single, “Foolish.” “What’s Luv?” has become one of Ashanti’s signature songs over the years, and rightfully so.

“Unfoolish” (2002)

Though released over two decades ago, “Foolish” is still widely considered to be Ashanti’s signature track. The R&B single spent ten whole weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. “Unfoolish,” while not a hit song, was a promotional single that featured a verse from The Notorious B.I.G. His guest appearance on the track was thanks to a verse from his song “F—king You Tonight.” Overall, “Unfoolish” has quickly become a cult favorite from Ashanti’s endless Hip Hop collabs.

“Mesmerize” (2002)

Ashanti and Ja Rule reigned supreme in the early 2000s, and “Mesmerize” is one of their standout tracks. The 2003 Hip Hop track features Ashanti and Ja Rule confessing their desire for one another. Both artists also appeared in the music video greatly inspired by the musical Grease. In the now iconic video, Ashanti and Ja Rule play a series of amusement park attractions before riding off together. “Mesmerize” hit the penultimate spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and is another staple in both artists’ discographies.

“Into You” (2003)

The “Into You” music video may have featured Tamia’s re-recorded vocals, but Ashanti’s voice on the album track is unmistakable. “Into You” is a Hip Hop love song by Fabolous, with vocals by Ashanti. Irv Gotti famously refused the singer to appear in the video, which led to Tamia’s version. However, Ashanti still received credit on official singles charts due to the mass appeal of both the album and single versions.

“Pac’s Life” (2006)

“Pac’s Life” is a song that celebrates the life of rap icon Tupac Shakur. The famous single was released as a part of the artist’s posthumous album release. “Pac’s Life” is a Hip Hop and R&B collab that features T.I. and Ashanti. Furthermore, the music video of “Pac’s Life” was highly anticipated and debuted on BET in November 2006. “Pac’s Life” was also filmed at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center, and T.I. and Ashanti appeared in the video paying homage to the legend. With the announcement of an incoming Tupac biography, the single has enjoyed more airplay.

“Body On Me” (2008)

Nelly and Ashanti have rekindled their romance after a decade apart. In 2008, the rapper featured Ashanti and Akon on the track “Body on Me.” Initially meant for her album The Declaration, the single was recorded while the pair were dating. Moreover, the Hip Hop and R&B collab features Ashanti’s sultry vocals anticipating a steamy night with her man. “Body on Me” didn’t achieve mainstream success but resonated with fans of the couple at the time.

N.O.R.E. Links Up With 50 Cent And Nelly At Lovers & Friends

There has been a lot written about Usher’s Lovers & Friends festival in Las Vegas. However, most of those articles have focused on the fallout of an alleged fight between Chris Brown and Usher. Usher reportedly suffered a beatdown at the hands of Brown and his entourage outside the roller rink hosting Brown’s 34th birthday. It just so happened that the party was happening on the eve of the Usher-organized Lovers & Friends Festival.

Usher had reportedly been telling Brown to back off from Teyana Taylor, who Brown had been verbally assaulting inside. The incident allegedly left Usher with a bloody nose and bruised ribs. However, both he and Brown performed their sets at the festival. Furthermore, no further drama has emerged between the two of them. Lovers & Friends was awash with big-name talent, hailing itself as a hub of nostalgic hip hop. But away from the Brown-Usher drama, there were so many more wholesome link-ups going down.

N.O.R.E. Seen With Nelly And 50 Cent

N.O.R.E., 50 Cent, and Nelly were all scheduled to perform at Lovers & Friends. N.O.R.E. had a small set on the Crunk Stage. Nelly was the late afternoon anchor for the Friends Stage. Meanwhile, 50 Cent was locked into the Lovers Stage evening slot. They were just three of the 49 total articles that played the noon to midnight schedule. The festival closed out with sets from Missy Elliott and PartyNextDoor on the Lovers and Crunk Stages respectively. The day had opened with a set from Lil Mo on the Crunk Stage. Overall, the Crunk Stage was the busiest, with 18 acts performing between 12:00pm and 10:45pm.

However, despite their busy schedules, that didn’t stop the three music legends from meeting up. N.O.R.E. is overjoyed to see 50 and Nelly, yelling at them excitedly, “Imma be honest, I kinda feel like I put both you n****s out”. The three artists joked around for a few minutes before N.O.R.E. announced that he was leaving, going to embrace 50. Despite the drama earlier in the day, the festival appears to have gone off successfully without incident. Follow HotNewHipHop for all the latest music and festival news.

An Insider Provides Update on Nelly and Ashanti Romance: ‘They Are Very Happy’

Ashanti Says Hasn't Seen Nelly Since They Broke Up

Nelly got his bae back. After being seen together at the Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia fight, Nelly and Ashanti appeared to be an item once again. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, a source stated they are elated about their reunion.

“Both of them are very happy,” a source said. Another added that they are “enjoying their time together.”

The two sat together at the fight and were also spotted holding hands as they left. Many on social media want to know, are they back together?

In another video, Jermaine Dupri, Usher, and Nelly were seen heading to a nightclub.

After the event, 50 Cent and Bow Wow had two cents to add.

Ashanti And Nelly Are Reportedly ‘Very Happy’ Together Again Amid Romance Rumors

Nelly’s Hot In Herre Festival isn’t until next month, but there’s (allegedly) plenty of heat between him and his former-girlfriend-who-might-be-his-current-girlfriend, Ashanti.

Nelly and Ashanti have been stoking reconciliation rumors since December when they performed their 2008 collaborative track “Body On Me” during a holiday festival in Atlanta. Last month, they performed it again in Las Vegas before attending the Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Ryan Garcia fight together.

And on Wednesday, May 3, Entertainment Tonight reported that their vibe isn’t performative at all.

“Nelly and Ashanti are back together, and both of them are very happy,” an unnamed source told ET.

The outlet cited a separate unnamed source as relaying, “Nelly and Ashanti are really enjoying their time together.”

Bow Wow will be pleased to hear this, as he advocated for Nelly to “stop playing and marry this woman” when footage of Ashanti and Nelly arriving to the Vegas fight together began circulating online in late April.

In December, Ashanti visited Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen and was asked to address online commentary that she and Nelly were rekindling their early-2000s romance.

“I mean, my reaction was, wow,” she said. “It was a lot of comments and a lot of people wanting that. What I will say is we’re in a better place. […] We’re cool now. We had some conversations, so it’s cool.”

Nelly also addressed the speculation in February.

“Time does wonders for a lot of different things,” he told Entertainment Tonight while attending the 2023 Grammys. “And time is one those things that allows you time to reflect on what’s what, and you get a chance to see things in a different light and see your faults. I think we both did that, and it’s cool that we just friends.”

Ashanti and Nelly initially met in 2003 and dated until splitting around 2013, as chronicled by Complex.

Nelly & Ashanti: Relationship Timeline

Photos of Nelly and Ashanti holding hands at a boxing match days ago have been circulating. Fans are curious to know if they are currently involved — again. Interestingly, their relationship goes way back, rewinding to the early 2000s. There’s a lot to think about with these two regarding how they met, how long they dated, and why they broke up. Here’s a detailed breakdown of Nelly and Ashanti’s relationship, including where they stand today.

Everything Started In 2003

Nelly and Ashanti were each individually doing their own things in the music industry before crossing paths with each other. In fact, they were both doing so well that they separately raked in multiple Billboard Music Awards in 2002. The very next year, they were officially introduced to each other at the Grammy Awards. Nelly was seemingly starstruck by Ashanti because he took that opportunity to ask for her autograph. Not long after, rumors about their romantic relationship started swirling. At the time, though, they both refrained from confirming whether or not they were truly together. Although fans were under the impression they were an item, they did everything in their power to maintain as much secrecy as possible.

Engagement Rumors & Wedding Plans

In 2008, People asked Ashanti about her relationship with Nelly. She responded simply and light-heartedly by saying, “Me and Nelly, we’re good friends. We kick it – hang out a lot. The industry is very hard, so it’s good to have fun and lighten it up.” She added an even more casual spin to the topic by laughing it off when they asked her about engagement rumors.

A couple of years later, in 2010, Nelly reportedly spoke with RapUpTV about wanting to take his time before getting married. He described Ashanti as being a good friend while they built their successful careers. He also noted that he never wanted to go through the process of getting married more than once.

Relationship Ends

After a little more than a decade in each other’s lives, Nelly and Ashanti’s relationship fizzled out. Both stars stayed tightlipped about the reason for their breakup at the time. Ashanti finally opened up about the split in an episode of Sway in the Morning on Hot 97. She claimed there was “no beef” between her and her famous ex.

It was easier for Ashanti to be a little more candid about her failed relationship years later, in 2015. During an episode of The Meredith Vieira Show, she became more open with some brutal honesty. She said, “I think sometimes when people have their own insecurities, it allows them to act out of character. I’ve been betrayed. I’m not a big fan of people being cowards. I’m in a different place now.” It was suggested she was targeting Nelly.

Singer Confirms Nelly’s Betrayal

All of the drama between Ashanti and Nelly seemingly came to a head in 2018 while she was performing on stage at a concert. She grabbed her mic between songs to say, “I’ve been betrayed before. Publicly at that.” Someone in the audience yelled back, “F*** Nelly!” She pointed directly at her fan and said, “Word” in agreement.

Later, Ashanti appeared in a 2019 episode of Watch What Happens Next With Andy Cohen. Andy has been known to ask heavy-hitting questions that aren’t always the smoothest or most comfortable for his visiting guests. When he brought up the topic of her failed relationship with Nelly, she made it abundantly clear that she hadn’t looked back on her decision to walk away with any regret.

Dating Again?

Now that we’re all caught up to 2023, the viral videos of Nelly and Ashanti cozying up at a boxing match have everyone talking. To this day, Nelly hasn’t publicly spoken up about where things originally went wrong. If they are indeed pursuing reconciliation, there’s no doubt their mutual fans will root for them to make it work. On Twitter alone, people have been going out of their way to compare Nelly and Ashanti‘s relationship to that of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck.

As a reminder, Jennifer and Ben are back together after spending 20 years apart. During those decades, they were each involved with other romantic partners. Somehow, they found their way back together and are now thriving as a couple. Odds are, Nelly and Ashanti can follow the same pattern of maintaining their privacy if they do officially get back together.
