Lil Uzi Vert And Peso Pluma Brought Drag And Drama To Coachella 2024

Coachella is still the best place to discover music that you otherwise wouldn’t or couldn’t. For example: on Friday, the first day of this year’s festival, the handful of hip-hop acts that I saw were mostly by accident (as the hip-hop editor, I would normally prioritize those, right?). But on my editor’s recommendation – and as a function of most of the rap acts being booked at the far-flung Sahara tent – I spent as much time taking in pop and indie acts as I did rappers (a random sighting of Tyler The Creator at Faye Webster notwithstanding).

From the headliner, Lana Del Rey, to artists I had little to no experience with (hi, Chappell Roan!), my experience was younger, more melodic, and hey, let’s face it, whiter than in past years – though still surprisingly diverse. For what it’s worth, Sabrina Carpenter’s late afternoon set brought a level of storytelling that made her unfamiliar music that much easier to engage with.

And sets like that of The Beths’ certainly did remind me of adolescent Saturdays spent watching The Adventures Of Pete And Pete on Nickelodeon, while the Deftones kicked me all the way back to my mid-’90s skate rat days. I could feel my nostalgia for that era peaking along with my anticipation for more of that feeling at future sets from No Doubt and Sublime (Beach til I die, y’all).

Crowd-wise, you would probably be forgiven for thinking Beyoncé was giving a reprise of her memorable 2018 Beychella performance with all the country-western paraphernalia permeating the crowd. Cowboy hats and boots adorned just about every combination of ‘chella ensembles you could imagine – and a few that left almost nothing to the imagination. Those looks eventually gave way to “baked potato chic” thanks to the insane high winds as the sun fell and folks opted for the warmth of thermal foil blankets over trying to maintain the cute of cutoff shorts and mesh dresses.

Of course, there was still plenty of my usual wheelhouse to check out. Lil Uzi Vert took to the big stage like a duck to water, complete with a headset mic like mid-’80s Madonna. They put it to good use with some crowd-pleasing voguing, and while it would have been nice to see a little more world building from Uzi‘s set, they pushed the boundaries of what future rappers could do with the big stage and proved worthy of the primetime set by sheer crowd draw alone; the field in front of the stage was so empty at first, that my editor and I actually remarked on it. Three songs later I couldn’t move more than a couple of inches in any direction. Let that be a lesson to Coachella’s bookers…hip-hop is still a huge draw at the festival, even when it seems absent.

The trick to finding it this year was broadening horizons and checking for other cultures. Young Miko, a Puerto Rican rapper brought a surprising update to the traditional New York boom-bap sound, while Bizarrap found tons of space in his EDM-centric set for Latin trap and remixes of Travis Scott classics (and a surprise Shakira appearance). My Spanish isn’t as good as it should be for someone born and raised in Los Angeles county but even if I couldn’t catch every bar, I definitely caught a vibe – and so did the overflowing crowds at both sets.

Meanwhile, the award for “Most Dramatic Set” undoubtedly goes to Peso Pluma, who enraptured social media with a seemingly incongruous combination of traditional Banda music and hip-hop-influenced dancing. Bookended by verbal interludes by MORGAN FREAKING FREEMAN, Peso illuminated an oft-overlooked and misunderstood cultural artifact. What is more hip-hop than that?

However, if there was a runner-up on that category, I’d be more than happy to give it to Lana Del Rey for pulling up through the crowd on the back of a motorcycle at the head of a line of bikers who rolled in to the sounds of her unreleased song “Jealous Girl” (which is still somehow a hit). She even went all-out with a hologram of herself that ruffled a few unlikely feathers.

A lot has been made of whether or not Coachella has fallen off in recent years (it’s a circular discussion, one we’ve heard for the past decade). Friday proved that there’s still plenty of road ahead – and that the festival is still the best place to discover your new favorite music, as long as you keep an open mind.

The Weeknd Appears To Laugh Off Drake’s Leaked Diss

Fans think The Weeknd was throwing shade at Drake with his latest post on Instagram, which features himself manically laughing. It comes after Drake shared a meme seemingly teasing the imminent release of a track addressing all the artists who have been dissing him in recent weeks. They include Kendrick Lamar and ASAP Rocky as well as The Weeknd. Additionally, The Weeknd’s post could be in response to that track possibly leaking online on Saturday, although many fans think it could be an A.I. creation as well.

The drama between the two started when The Weeknd dissed Drake on Metro Boomin and Future’s track, “All to Myself.” Afterward, Drake shared a meme on his Instagram Story seemingly asking fans to hold out hope for his long-awaited response to the situation. Then, users on social media began sharing, what appears to be a leaked version of the diss track on social media, although it remains unconfirmed.

On “All to Myself,” The Weeknd made direct reference to there being leaks in Drake’s camp. “They could never diss my brothers, baby/ When they got leaks in they operation/ I thank God that I never signed my life away/ And we never do the big talk/ They shooters makin’ TikToks,” he sings, likely referencing Baka Not Nice with that last bar. Metro Boomin Seemingly Reacts To Drake’s Alleged Leaked Diss Track

After weeks of waiting for a response from Drake, eager fans finally had their wishes granted today, at least allegedly. A rumored leaked diss track by Drizzy called “Drop And Give Me 50” started to make its rounds online, though it’s yet to be confirmed whether or not it’s real. From the beginning, fans speculated that it was crafted using artificial intelligence. Either way, they’re carefully dissecting each and every one of the Toronto-born performer’s alleged bars.

On the track, Drake appears to take shots at several of the fellow artists who’ve shaded him recently. This, of course, includes Kendrick Lamar, Metro Boomin, Rick Ross, and more. He even seemingly addressed J. Cole’s now-deleted response track “7 Minute Drill,” and subsequent apology. Now, it appears as though Metro could have caught wind of the jab meant for him, and responded with a subtle but telling post on Twitter/X.

Metro Boomin Declares Himself, Future, And The Weeknd “The Biggest 3”

“I get more love in the city that you’re from n***a / Metro shut yo h*e a*s up and make some drums, n***a,” Drake seemingly raps on the track. Amid all the chatter surrounding the rumored leak, the producer shared a photo of himself alongside Future and The Weeknd. “The biggest 3,” he captioned the photo. It’s unclear if this was a direct response to Drake, but social media users certainly seem to think so. His comments section is currently flooded with remarks about “Drop And Give Me 50.”

“Nahhhh but did you hear what Drake said about you guys? I wouldn’t take that just saying man,” one Twitter/X user writes. “Metro shut yo h0 a$$ up and make some drums,” another quips. The new video shows all three singing in a white room as well as a club as the camera highlights them with extreme closeups and other effects.

Fans had plenty of praise for the video on YouTube. The current top comment reads: “The Weeknd is really Metro’s secret weapon.” Another adds: “Future and Metro really out here saving hip hop. I don’t think people understand how crazy it was for them to drop two albums, causing major controversy and beef…all while dropping a variety of multiple banger tracks in a span of MERE WEEKS.”

It isn’t the only apparent Drake diss on the album either. ASAP Rocky also seemed to call him out on the track, “Show of Hands.” He raps: “N****s in they feelings over women, what, you hurt or something/ I smash before you birthed, son, Flacko hit it first, son/ Still don’ trust you, it’s always us, never them/ Heard you dropped your latest sh*t/ Funny how it just came and went.”

Atlanta, Georgia, has been the dominating hub of rap music for well over a decade now, but the region’s run began long before that. Rico Wade laid the groundwork for the South as part of the pioneering production team Organized Noize and Dungeon Family collective.

Sadly, the mastermind behind the sounds of OutKast, Goodie Mob, and Killer Mike, to name a few, has died at the age of 52. Today (April 13), a representative of the late musician reached out to AllHipHop to confirm the tragic news.

Several media titans and entertainers have taken to their official social media pages to share a touching message in Wade’s honor. One of the most moving came from Killer Mike.

“I don’t have the words to express my deep and profound sense of loss,” he wrote on Instagram. I am praying for your wife, children, the Wade family, and us all. I deeply appreciate your acceptance into the Dungeon family, mentorship, friendship, and brotherhood. I don’t know where I would be without y’all.”

Others who have shared their condolences online include Phonte, Juicy J, Ebro Darden, Arrested Development’s Speech, and Alchemist. View their statements below.

Details surrounding Rico Wade’s death have not yet been revealed.

Drake Fires Back At Everyone On Leaked Diss Track, But It Might Be AI

Fans have been eagerly awaiting a response from Drake ever since Kendrick Lamar went after him on his collab with Future and Metro Boomin, “Like That.” Up until now, it’s been mostly radio silence from the Toronto-born performer. Now, however, a clip of what’s said to be a new Drizzy track called “Drop And Give Me 50” is making its rounds on social media. In the song, he seemingly takes shots at Kendrick, Metro Boomin, Rick Ross, and more. The only catch is that it could have been created using AI.

Almost immediately after the song appeared online, listeners began to speculate that it wasn’t crafted by the real Drake. This is unconfirmed at the time of writing, and the song has now been mostly wiped from Twitter/X. Whether it’s real or not, commenters are analyzing Drake’s alleged bars to the fullest extent.

Drake’s Diss Track Allegedly Leaks Online

“I get more love in the city that you’re from n***a / Metro shut yo h*e a*s up and make some drums, n***a,” he seemingly rhymes, calling Metro Boomin out by name. “Pip-squeak, pipe down/You ain’t in no Big Three, SZA got you wiped down/Travis got you wiped down/Savage got you wiped down/Like your label, boy you Interscope right now,” he also allegedly fires back at Kendrick. He even may have addressed J. Cole deleting his own response to Kendrick and apologizing. “And that f*cking song y’all got is not starting beef with us/This sh*t been brewing in a pot, now I’m heating up/I don’t care what Cole think, that Dot sh*t was weak as f*ck,” he seemingly spits.

Only time will tell if the track is real or not. For the time being, fans are begging Drake to address the rumored “leak.” What do you think of an alleged Drake response track surfacing online? Do you think it’s AI or not? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Jadakiss Wants To Ask J Cole “What Happened?” With Kendrick Lamar Feud

Jadakiss wants to speak with J Cole about his apology to Kendrick Lamar because he can’t figure out why he did it. Appearing on The Stephen A. Smith Show, he discussed Cole’s apology as well as Lamar’s feud with Drake.

Jadakiss began by explaining that he doesn’t think Cole was “worried” about what Lamar was going to fire back with and instead suggested that he “felt something internally.” From there, he said that he wants to ask Cole “what happened?” Jadakiss also theorized that Drake is definitely going to drop a response but that it will come when “it dies down.”

Cole’s apology came just days after he dropped a response to Lamar’s verse on “Like That” with his own song, “7 Minute Drill.” On the effort, he labeled Lamar’s discography overrated. Performing at Dreamville Festival, he admitted he didn’t feel good about doing so. “I’m so proud of that project except for one part,” Cole said. “There’s one part of that sh*t that makes me feel like, ‘Man, that’s the lamest sh*t I ever did in my f*cking life.’ And, I know this is not what a lot of people wanna hear. I can hear my n****s up there right now like, ‘Nah, don’t do that.’” He further labeled Lamar as one of the greatest of all time and has since deleted “7 Minute Drill” from streaming services.

Young Thug Jams To Music In Court Video, Fans Wonder What He’s Listening To

Young Thug appeared to be jamming to some music during his latest appearance in court for the YSL RICO trial and fans want to know what he had playing in his headphones. A viral video of the moment is circulating on social media, showing Thug bobbing his head back and forth with earbuds in while he awaits the case to resume.

One fan suggested it was a Young Nudy track. “I want to know what @youngthug was listening to in court today but I think it was peaches & eggplants,” they wrote. Another theorized the new Metro Boomin and Future collaborative album, We Still Don’t Trust You. “Young Thug listening to that new Future and Metro album while waiting for the jurors to arrive,” one said. The removal of Gunna comes after he took a plea deal back in 2022, a decision that garnered plenty of backlash. Check out the latest clip of Thug from the trial below.

Diddy Allegations: UMG Wants Out Of Sexual Assault Lawsuit

In November of last year, Diddy was hit with yet another lawsuit for alleged sexual assault, this time from a woman named Liza Gardner. Gardner claims she met the Bad Boy Records founder and Aaron Hall at an event in the 90s. At the time, she says she was only 16 years old. She alleges that the duo began buying her drinks before inviting her back to Hall’s apartment. Upon arrival, she alleges that they sexually assaulted her and her friend, also pressuring them to drink more alcohol. Days later, she accuses Diddy of showing up at her house, “assaulting and choking” her.

Diddy, Hall, and Universal Music Group are listed as defendants in the suit, but now, UMG wants out. The music corporation filed a motion to dismiss in a New York court on Thursday (April 11), arguing that Gardner failed to provide sufficient evidence linking UMG to the alleged rape. According to them, the incident had “nothing to do with UMGR.”

“The Complaint’s allegations, if true, are certainly disturbing,” the motion reads, also claiming that Gardner has no “factual support connecting UMGR to the alleged assaults.” UMG additionally argues that her lawsuit should have been filed under the Child Victims Act (CVA) instead of the Adult Survivors Act (ASA), as she claims to have been 16 at the time of the incident.

“Plaintiff makes no allegation supporting vicarious liability for battery or assault (nor could she),” the motion continues. “Plaintiff’s NIED claim also fails because she has not alleged any duty owed to her by UMGR, and nowhere in Plaintiff’s Complaint does she allege that UMGR’s conduct was extreme and outrageous, as she is required to do as a matter of legal sufficiency.” What do you think of Universal Music Group asking to be dismissed from Liza Gardner’s lawsuit against Diddy?
