Pharrell’s Something In The Water festival in Virginia Beach has an insane lineup over three days, so it’s no surprise that it’s given us some standout performance moments so far. However, among its many surprise guests and memorable sets was none other than Virginia native Chris Brown. Moreover, the R&B star appeared to perform some hits for the crowd, showing off his dance moves and vocal range. What’s more is that the Neptunes icon came out on stage to give Brown his flowers. During his remarks, he noted the many talents and artistic areas in which he’s thrived for almost two decades.
“Nah, nah, nah,” Pharrell began. “Make some noise for our brother. Came all the way over here to make this happen. Make some noise for Virginia’s own, Chris Brown! Lil bro, listen, there’s only one you. There’s only one you. Give this man his flowers again, make some noise for Virginia’s own! The dancing-est, singing-est, craziest video-making singing dude in R&B and pop music until now. Make some noise for our brother Chris Brown!”
Furthermore, as the In My Mind star went on, Brown continuously thanked Pharrell and the crowd for their love. When he left the stage, he asked the crowd to turn up and be safe, adding that he loves them. Despite what this guest appearance might have you believe, the “Yeah 3x” singer actually isn’t a fan of performing in the States anymore. When a fan asked him when he’d perform at the Super Bowl, he said that he doesn’t want to perform for a crowd he doesn’t feel appreciates him. “Never shawty,” he responded to the fan. “American media AINT FA me. Rather be where I’m welcomed.”
Of course, that is likely due to his many public controversies which, although years-old, continue to be brought up by him or by fans. As such, discussion surrounding Chris Brown these days seems to be at least equally divided between his music and his actions, if not slanted towards the latter. It’s been a long time since Nicki Minaj came up in conversation along with 6ix9ine, but she still graced one of his biggest songs ever. Moreover, that’s a track that the 26-year-old is still playing at live events to this day, with or without the Young Money alum. During his set at the 2023 Beach Please Festival in Romania, he performed their track “FEFE” to a massive crowd, and people seemed pretty excited. Not only that, but he let Nicki’s verse play in full and occasionally sang to keep people’s energy up. Even though he hadn’t made a performance appearance in a while, apparently he still knows how to rock a crowd.
On that note, given all the new music he dropped as of late, perhaps we’ll see 6ix9ine in a live setting more often moving forward. The New York rapper’s latest release was the song “Y Ahora” with Mexican band Group Firme, further leading us to his teased Latin album. While many clowned the “GUMMO” MC for his stylistic switch-up, it’s by no means shocking or unprecedented. A couple of tracks from his peak presence in pop culture are in Spanish, and some are collaborations with the likes of Puerto Rican reggaetón artist Anuel AA.
As such, this change in primary sound probably isn’t completely due to to his gym beatdown as many believe. Rather, it’s just another step in his artistic evolution, a career path that he actually toned down before his viral attack. In addition to 6ix9ine’s own moves, Nicki Minaj kept busy with new releases recently, as well. The most standout recent single has to be her remix of “Princess Diana” by Ice Spice, which got a lot of praise and was much-anticipated by fans.
Overall, the controversial artist still seemed to have a pretty good time at the Romanian festival. He also took a moment to honor the late XXXTENTACION during his set as well amid some of his biggest hits and collaborations. Per Coachella’s website, they only allowed medium-sized backpacks that are no bigger than 18″x13″x8.5″ when packed. Along with earplugs, an eye mask is a must-have for the festival. Getting a good night’s sleep can be difficult with all the excitement and activities. And with the sun rising early in the desert, you might wake up earlier than you’d like. An eye mask can block out light and create a better sleeping environment. It can also come in handy for mid-day naps or resting in between sets. Packing earplugs for when you want to tune out and sleep is great since the festival can be noisy and chaotic, even during nighttime.
And finally, don’t forget to pack your ticket for Coachella 2023. You could try sweet-talking your way into the festival with your charming personality, but your dazzling smile probably won’t sway the security guards. So, do yourself a favor and put that ticket at the very top of your packing list.
As expected, they saved the best for (almost) last. Ahead of Frank Ocean’s headlining set later this evening (April 16), Kali Uchis gave one of her best performances to date on the Coachella mainstage with thousands of patrons watching on. While fans surely would’ve been satisfied with just the bilingual songstress and her ethereal vocals, she didn’t disappoint with her roster of surprise appearances, which included “See You Again” collaborator Tyler, the Creator.
After satisfying hip-hop heads with the deluxe cut of his CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST album last month, the Californian brought plenty of energy to his performance. Their 2017 joint effort is the most-streamed title from Tyler’s Flower Boy project, and they’ve since worked together on “After The Storm” with Bootsy Collins. The Coachella crowd was obviously pleased with that, but little did they know, more was in store from Uchis.

Omar Apollo was on deck to sing “Worth the Wait” with his friend shortly after the Creator left. The song appears on Uchis’ Red Moon in Venus album, which arrived in the first few days of March. Elsewhere on the 15-track effort she linked up with her boyfriend, Don Toliver, on “Fantasy.” The couple showed off their strong chemistry during the 28-year-old’s Coachella set, crooning the lyrics to their second joint release of 2023 so far. Other tracks the Virginia-born vocalist sang this weekend include “Moonlight,” “Papi Chulo,” and “Tattoo.”

This was an obvious one. After a six-year hiatus from performing live, Frank Ocean is returning as the main headliner at Coachella. Rumors have been circulating about Ocean beginning his next album rollout after Coachella. The Mercedes Benz E-30 on the cover of Nostalgia, Ultra has been seen around the venue. In addition, Frank Ocean has reportedly registered two new songs for licensing within the past 24 hours.
While the L.A.-based artist prefers not to perform often, he’s certainly not camera-shy. His performances have been consistently brilliant and iconic. Ocean’s booming vocals radiate throughout venues, making him among today’s most in-demand live performers. He’ll perform at 10 pm on Saturday as the main act at Coachella 2023.
Kaytranada

Spearheading the revival of ’90s dance and house tunes, Kaytranada’s DJ set is set to be pure fireworks. The Montreal-born artist has been on a heck of a run over the past year, from touring with The Weeknd to releasing his Intimidated EP in 2021. Kaytranada’s sets are unique in that he’s not just playing streamable tracks. Making his name through remixing songs in the Soundcloud scene, he’ll often mix these tracks into his live sets. With Canadian duo Kaytranada and Amine releasing Kaytramine sometime this summer, we may hear some new tracks from that project during Coachella 2023.

Pusha T is another essential artist to see at Coachella. You never know what you’re going to get from his sets. While he’ll be performing cuts from the critically acclaimed It’s Almost Dry, the veteran MC tends to mix in an unpredictable collection of songs from his past eras, including when he was a member of The Clipse. In addition, hearing classics such as “Don’t Like.1” or “Trouble On My Mind” in a live setting is an unforgettable experience.
Gorillaz

Amidst the release of their new album, Cracker Island, Gorillaz are capitalizing on the hype by performing at Coachella 2023. The upbeat nature of their last record should translate well to the live stage. The band tends to do more than perform their songs on-stage. Gorillaz has presented itself live in various ways throughout its history. They’ve hidden the touring band from the audience’s view in the project’s early years, projecting animated band members on stage via computer graphics and traditional live touring featuring a fully visible live band.
Yves Tumor

On the live stage, Yves Tumor is pure electricity. Recently releasing Praise a Lord Who Chews but Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds), their new studio album is being hailed as one of the better projects to release this year. Tumor is captivating live, confidently waltzing around the stage and jumping into the crowd. The electric guitar is a driving force behind much of their sound, so their transition to a live performance is seamless. In addition, the menacing soundscapes of his last record will sound even better in a live setting.
Kali Uchis

Like many artists on this list, Kali Uchis is riding the wave of a successful new project. Gleeful and soulful, Red Moon in Venushas captivated the R&B world throughout the first half of 2023. Spearheaded by the hit song “Moonlight,” the record has already eclipsed 200 million streams on Spotify alone. Uchis’ voice has proven to sound even better life. Touring alongside Tyler, the Creator during his 2022 tour of Call Me If You Get Lost, she indeed won’t be experiencing any ring rust when she returns to the mainstage on Sunday afternoon.

Known for his dark production style and influence on modern trap, Metro Boomin returned to the performance stage Friday night. The St. Louis-born producer is behind numerous modern classic trap albums, such as Savage Mode and Without Warning. However, he additionally sports a strong personal catalog. He released Heroes & Villains in December 2022, a record that quickly jumped-up lists for rap album of the year. Therefore, his sets are exhilaratingly unpredictable, as you never know which songs he’ll choose from a deep vault of hits.
Domi & JD Beck

One of the most talented musical duos, Domi & JD Beck are undeniably one of those groups that can’t be fully appreciated unless experienced live. The jazz duo heavily emphasizes live instrumentation, blending classic sounds with modern-day piano chords. The two released their first album, NOT TiGHT, in August of 2022. The project featured the likes of Snoop Dogg and Thundercat. Singlehandedly spearheading jazz revival, they’ll undeniably be a duo to watch over the following years. A perfect opportunity for that came on Friday afternoon at Coachella 2023.
Remi Wolf

First appearing on American Idol as a bubbly teenager, Remi Wolf has since propelled herself into an iconic popstar. If anything, her latest release Juno dived into the erratic spaces of hyper-pop and rapid electronica. The sonic shift fit her high-pitched vocal falsettos to a tee. Wolf makes it a point to interact with her audience during her shows, serenading the crowd with positive energy. The Palo Alto-born singer-songwriter will perform at Mojave around 6:30 on Saturday afternoon.
Bad Bunny

There’s an argument to be had that Bad Bunny is the biggest artist on the planet right now. The Puerto Rican singer and rapper boasts over 60 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Morphing Latin grooves with modern-day rap, his sound has attracted fans across every corner of the globe. Previously performing at Coachella in 2019, he returns with an even bigger crowd in front of him for Coachella 2023. Approaching a year since Un Verano Sin Ti, the project should drive his performance.
Day one of Coachella is done and dusted. This of course means that plenty of celebrity and socialite photo dumps are beginning to surface online. Among those attending the annual music festival’s first weekend are stars like Karrueche, Bella Thorne, Madison Beer, and James Charles. They’re making headlines simply for showing up to the event. Really though, all eyes were on yesterday’s performers, who included acts like Idris Elba, YUNGBLUD, Tobe Nwigwe, and Pusha T. Bad Bunny was the evening’s headliner. He brought out plenty of surprise guests while working through technical difficulties like a champ.
Blink-182 also gave an incredible performance on Coachella’s opening day, with Travis Barker tearing it up on the drums as expected. His wife, Kourtney Kardashian, and his son, Landon Barker, stepped out in support of the rocker at the Sahara Tent. While the oldest Kardashian-Jenner sibling was obviously outside, the youngest, Kylie, was nowhere to be seen after DeuxMoi speculated that she and Timothée Chalamet would make their debut at the event. Of course, it’s entirely possible we could see them make an appearance next weekend as well.
Other noteworthy sets came from acts like Pusha T, Doechii, and Jaden Smith, all of whom brought nothing short of style and swagger to the stage. Coachella day two preparations are taking place as we speak, and along with today’s impressive line-up (including Yung Lean, Labrinth, $uicideboy$, Rosalía, and headliners BLACKPINK), many stars are looking forward to attending Coachella’s biggest after-party, Neon Carnival.
According to TMZ, names like Lil Nas X, Idris Elba, YG, Nina Dobrev, and Willow Smith are all expected to attend tonight (April 15). This will mark the function’s twelfth year taking place, and DJ Ruckus has been tapped to keep the vibes going into the early morning hours. Nearly 10,000 people were at last year’s carnival, and even more are reportedly expected to appear in 2023. Many American music lovers are finding themselves at Coachella in California this weekend, though others opted to catch a flight overseas to attend Rolling Loud Thailand. The latter saw Cardi B give an incredible headlining performance on Thursday (April 13) night, and on Friday, it was Chris Brown’s turn to put his skills on display. The father of three has spent much of the past few months travelling around to promote his Breezy album, though this marks his first festival appearance in a minute. He obviously didn’t at all hold back with his vocals and dance moves – some of which were wildly raunchy.
As you may recall, Brown has become known for treating some of his female fans to promiscuous lap dances during his recent concerts. One such instance even apparently ended a relationship, though the 33-year-old doesn’t seem to be bothered by the possibility of breaking a couple up. Rather than following his usual routine by bringing up a patron at Rolling Loud California, he instead performed a salacious dance routine with one of his performers, who mimicked giving him a blowjob as he sang “Under The Influence.”
