Best Romantic Comedies For Your Hip Hop Valentine’s Day

Watching romantic comedy movies for Valentine’s Day is something people have been doing for years. Commonly called “rom-coms,” these movies typically have a predictable plot and outcome, which is comforting for people who just want to see love win in the end. Over the years, people have taken different approaches to this genre to make their movies stand out from the rest. They bring unique elements to the plot, characters, soundtrack, and more that offer something refreshing but still remain accessible.

In our list, we‘ve gathered some romantic comedies that did just that. In fact, calling a few of these romantic comedies may not seem accurate to some. Yet, the premise of a couple falling in love through a series of interconnected events is still present in all of them. Plus – the music in all of our movie choices is curated excellently.

Love Don’t Cost A Thing (2003)

Valentine’s Day is on a Wednesday this year, but if you want to watch this movie for your Throwback Thursday, go for it. This movie came out in 2003 and stars a young Nick Cannon, Kenan Thompson, Christina Milian, Steve Harvey, and more. In it, Cannon’s character Alvin lets Millan’s character Dru “pay” him for working on her mother’s car by posing as his girlfriend for two weeks. Alvin isn’t “cool,” so to maintain her image, she changes up his style completely.

His transformation into someone “cool” is drenched in early 2000s hip-hop fashion. With the combination of his color-coordinated tops and bottoms, headbands, long chain, and toothpick, the entire look is a great snapshot of the timeframe the movie released. While not original in its lesson, this is still a fun one that you probably remember or randomly saw on BET one day while flipping channels.

Rye Lane (2023)

This is the newest movie on our list. It was released just over a month after Valentine’s Day in 2023. Rye Lane follows a couple who meet under unique circumstances and end up spending an entire day together. The movie has many modern elements reflected in the soundtrack, costumes, and script. UK slang runs throughout the movie, too. The hip-hop component stems from all of these elements but even extends into the plot itself.

Amongst other situations, characters Yas, played by David Jonsson, and Dom, played by Vivian Oparah, must retrieve a vinyl of A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low-End Theory album from the home of Dom’s ex-boyfriend. A creatively depicted scene also explains why this album was such a key aspect of the relationship. This is one that puts stylization over tropes and still provides an engaging watch.

Poetic Justice (1993)

We know we officially said this was a list of romantic comedy movies for Valentine’s Day. While this movie certainly is not a “rom-com” in the traditional sense, we’d be remiss if we didn’t include it on this list, regardless. John Singleton is a legendary director known for his 90s classics which all have a strong hip-hop element within them. Whether it’s the soundtrack, the costumes or the film’s general tone, everything is on 10. Janet Jackson and Tupac star in the lead roles in this one. Audiences still use GIFs and repost clips from it, and the term “Poetic Justice braids” is commonly used today. This certified classic can be enjoyed all year but might hit a little harder this month.

Let It Shine (2012)

You may have made a face when you saw this entry on the list, but hear us out! This is a great Valentine’s Day movie and is honestly the most hip-hop-centered one on our list. The plot follows Cyrus, played by Tyler James Williams, who secretly writes raps. Because of a simple mistake, people begin to believe his best friend Kris, played by Trevor Jackson, is the one writing the raps – including Cyrus’ crush Roxie, played by Coco Jones. The movie’s story reflects the characters’ ages and teaches lessons in confidence, identity, and more. Plus, there are several musical performances, including a rap battle scene that – amongst the nostalgia – still hits all these years later. This movie is another one that was big, depending on your generation, but still a fun one if you want something more lighthearted than our other entries.

Brown Sugar (2002)

This is a universally celebrated classic Valentine’s Day-related movie from 2002. The movie’s hip hop centric approach sets it apart from many rom-coms. Taye Digg’s character Dre is an A&R Executive for hip-hop, and Sanaa Lathan’s character Sid is an Editor-In-Chief for a magazine. Hip-hop is a running theme in their interactions and is the basis of their initial meeting. The hip-hop influence also extends to the cast of the movie. Rappers Queen Latifah and Mos Def play characters who have direct interactions with Sid and Dre. Additionally, there were cameos from hip-hop legends like Big Daddy Kane, Method Man, Slick Rick, and more. The movie’s soundtrack continued the theme, with the album not only achieving Billboard Chart success but Erykah Badu and Common’s track on it, “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop),” won a Grammy.

Have you seen any of these movies? What movies will you be watching to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Let us know in the comments section.

7 Rappers Who Starred In Romantic Comedies

In the entertainment world, Hip Hop artists are known for their lyrical prowess, commanding stage presence, and dynamic personalities. However, some rappers have also ventured into the realm of romantic comedies, bringing their charisma to the big screen. In stories that blend love and laughter with a dash of adversity, these artists have showcased their acting talent. Here’s a look at some notable rappers turned actors who have left a mark on the rom-com genre.

Queen Latifah

Few rappers have starred in as many iconic romantic comedies as Queen Latifah. A trailblazer in both Hip Hop and film, she has graced the genre with her presence in multiple movies. Starring beside LL Cool J, she played the lead in the 2006 classic, Last Holiday. In Girls Trip (2017), she portrayed Sasha Franklin, a former journalist turned internet gossip reporter who is struggling financially. she also starred in Brown Sugar (2002), and Just Wright (2010). Evidently, Queen Latifah is an experienced Hollywood veteran, with a stellar rom-com portfolio.

Will Smith

Will Smith initially gained fame as part of the Hip Hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. However, over the years, he seamlessly transitioned into acting and it has been nothing short of extraordinary. One of the most iconic rappers of the 90s, he also has a history with romantic comedies. In 2005, he starred as the titular character in the romantic comedy film, Hitch. While it’s not as big as some other films he has started in, Hitch is a very fun watch. In the movie, Smith played a charismatic dating coach, bringing his trademark charm and comedic timing to the role.

LL Cool J

A pioneer in the rap industry, LL Cool J showcased his acting chops in the romantic comedy Deliver Us From Eva (2003). Starring alongside Gabrielle Union, he played Raymond ‘Ray’ Adams, a man caught up in a scheme to smooth out Eva Dandridge’s overbearing tendencies. He is hired by his old friend to seduce Eva and convince her to move away from her sisters’ relationships. However, in an interesting twist, he unexpectedly falls for her. Not many rappers get to be leading men in romantic comedies, but LL Cool J delivers in this role.

Common

Known for his thought-provoking lyrics and smooth delivery, Common took a leading role in the rom-com Just Wright. Playing alongside Queen Latifah, he took on the role of Scott McKnight, a basketball player recovering from an injury. While going through physiotherapy sessions with Leslie Wright (Latifah), McKnight finds himself falling for her. Common is one of the most notable rappers turned actors, with a healthy catalog of diverse roles.

Idris Elba

While it may come as a shocker to some, Idris Elba has actually been rapping since the 2000s. Over the years, he has also made a name for himself in the film and television industry. A prominent figure in Hollywood, he has been a leading man in many movies. Unsurprisingly, he is among the list of rappers who have starred in romantic comedies. He portrayed a single father of three daughters in the Tyler Perry film, Daddy’s Little Girls (2007). He had great chemistry with Gabrielle Union who played Julia Rossmore, his love interest.

Nick Cannon

Love Don’t Cost A Thing was released on December 12, 2003. Featuring Nick Cannon and Christina Milian in lead roles, the movie is a remake of Can’t Buy Me Love (1987). It was released just days after Nick Cannon’s eponymous debut album dropped, and helped boost his popularity. Despite low ratings, the movie was a favorite among young audiences, and made Cannon a heartthrob. Additionally, the chemistry between the two leads was great, even leading to a romantic relationship after the film.

Yasiin Bey

It’s not very often romantic comedies feature multiple rappers. However, the 2002 classic, Brown Sugar, does that, and utilizes the Hip Hop stars excellently. As aforementioned, Queen Latifah appears in the film. However, Black Star’s Yasiin Bey (then known as Mos Def) also stars in Brown Sugar. While he does not play a lead role, Bey completely embodies the supporting character he portrays. Besides Latifah and Bey, many other Hip Hop stars appear in the film, but they do so as themselves. These include Big Daddy Kane, De La Soul, Method Man, and Slick Rick, among many others.

Mo’Nique Recalls Encouraging Taraji P. Henson To Speak Up For Herself On “Club Shay Shay”

Mo’Nique’s eagerly anticipated Club Shay Shay episode finally arrived today, and the interview appears to have lived up to the hype. Countless supporters were hoping to hear her weigh in on Taraji P. Henson’s comments about working on The Color Purple, and she delivered. Hesnon raised concerns about how she and her castmates were treated on set, which sparked a larger discussion about how Black women are treated in the entertainment industry. Many noted that Mo’Nique tried to bring attention to these issues years ago. Unfortunately, however, her message didn’t reach nearly as many ears.

According to Mo’Nique, this is because people aren’t as willing to listen to her. As she puts it, she’s often expected to take what she can get as a plus-sized Black woman. She also notes that she’s called out Black icons by name previously, which others in the community haven’t appreciated. Mo’Nique says the fact that she wasn’t heard out when she brought attention to these issues is the reason that they happen time and time again.

Mo’Nique Says She Was Ignored Because She Called Out Black Icons By Name

“When I saw Taraji broken on those platforms it was painful to watch,” she begins in a clip. “However, Taraji and I had a conversation over a decade ago in my trailer when I was doing The Mo’Nique Show. She said, ‘You know you’ve got to keep on going until your turn comes.’ And I said, ‘Taraji, most of us die before our turn comes. We’ve got to ask for it right now.’ Now, I understand that because there was a time when I felt the same way. Because that’s what I was told… ‘We’ll get ’em the next time,’ and the next time never comes.

What do you think of Mo’Nique’s take on Taraji P. Henson’s complaints about working on The Color Purple? Do you agree with her? What about her appearance on Club Shay Shay? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

North West’s Debut Song ‘Talking/Once Again’ Now Has An Official Video Featuring Her Dad, Kanye

Kanye West may be on the outs with basically the entire entertainment industry (save for a few of his “friends” in the rap world*) at this point, but it looks like he may have found the perfect way back in: Riding on the coattails of his lovable 10-year-old daughter, North West.

North has previously expressed her desire to follow in pops’ footprints, and recently, had been performing her own debut single at his listening events. Now, that song, officially titled “Talking/Once Again,” has a music video, and of course, it features North confidently rapping at the camera as her father lurks nearby, like Puff in all of Biggie’s videos. He doesn’t even have the decency to dance.

*(Let’s be real here: Being friends with characters like Chris Brown, DaBaby, and Marilyn Manson probably isn’t doing him any favors, either.)

If this reads a little cynical, sorry — not sorry. The whole exercise feels this way; in addition to using his kid to Trojan Horse his way back into the spotlight, Kanye also uses the video to push his regressive views on femininity, which reads especially gross after he excoriated his ex-wife for letting their daughter play around with makeup on TikTok, then paraded his new wife/dress-up doll around in a literal plastic bag not a full 48 hours ago.

I have no thoughts on the quality of the song that I care to share but I do feel bad for North. Being the child of divorced parents isn’t much fun and doing it in the spotlight, with access to opportunities few other kids will ever get will probably only exacerbate things. In any event, the song will allegedly appear on Kanye’s new album Vultures with Ty Dolla Sign, but it’s anyone’s guess when that’ll actually come out — if ever. You can watch the “Talking/Once Again” video above.

Teyana Taylor & Leonardo DiCaprio Film Scene For New Movie

Teyana Taylor and Leonardo DiCaprio were both spotted filming a scene for Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming untitled film. TMZ obtained footage of the two on set together from Saturday in downtown Sacramento. The two rocked business attire in the scene while walking into a high-rise building.

While little is known about the highly-anticipated project, the costume designs make the film appear to be set in the modern day. This would make it Anderson’s first to do so since 2002’s Punch-Drunk Love. In the years since, he’s released There Will Be Blood, The Master, Inherent Vice, Phantom Thread, and Licorice Pizza. In addition to Taylor and DiCaprio, the cast features Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Wood Harris, Alana Haim, and Junglepussy. After the cast was announced, Junglepussy wrote on Twitter: “BEING CAST IN A FILM LIKE THIS IS NOT NORMAL FOR AN ARTIST LIKE ME GOTTA PAT MYSELF ON THE BACK.”

In other Teyana Taylor news, she recently made headlines for calling out TMZ over the outlet’s coverage of her divorce from Iman Shumpert. “Y’all really be taking it too far with these d*mn misleading headlines and I’m tired of it!” she wrote on her Instagram Story. “Every time I turn around it’s either half leaked and made up stories, or words being twisted up for clickbait!!!!” The outlet had just covered a report that her WiFi and cable had been cut off and that she hadn’t been receiving any financial support from Shumpert.

Remembering Carl Weathers: His Most Iconic Films

Carl Weathers tragically passed away last week at the age of 76. The NFL linebacker turned prolific actor appeared in nearly 100 esteemed on-screen projects, including a wide array of action, comedy, and sci-fi roles. Touching tributes have already begun to pour in from Weathers’ co-stars, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jesse Ventura, Adam Sandler, and more. As we mourn the loss of this once-in-a-lifetime talent, here’s a look into five of Carl Weathers’ greatest movies from his decades-long career.

5. Rocky (1976)

Rocky is the iconic 1976 film that launched the careers of both Carl Weathers and Sylvester Stallone. While each actor had appeared in a handful of smaller roles before Rocky, their front-and-center placement in the franchise-launching film catapulted the stars to A-list status. In the film, Carl Weathers introduces the historic character of Apollo Creed, a figure still referenced in the ongoing Creed spin-off franchise that revolves around the character’s son.

Apollo Creed serves as the main antagonist in the Oscar-winning movie. The cocky and patriotic World Heavyweight Champion is the perfect larger-than-life opponent for the film’s eponymous underdog to face off against for 15 rounds, resulting in one of the greatest boxing movies ever made. While Sylvester Stallone is the obvious breakout star of the film, Rocky could never have been as groundbreaking as it was without the inclusion of Carl Weathers.

4. Action Jackson (1988)

1988’s Action Jackson sees Carl Weathers taking front-and-center as the title character. Joel Silver, a film producer, approached Weathers about starring in his own Blaxploitation vehicle, leading to the development of the movie. Apparently, Weathers concocted the story outline and character details while shooting Predator in Mexico, and began production on Action Jackson shortly thereafter.

In the film, Carl Weathers stars as a take-no-prisoners Detroit detective, hell-bent on taking down corruption within the Motor City. Critics panned the film, though audiences loved it, resulting in Action Jackson taking home over $20 million at the box office against a paltry budget of only $8 million. Despite critics giving it poor reviews, enthusiasts widely acclaim the film as a cult classic, actively watching and enjoying it to this day.

3. Predator (1987)

When Predator was released in 1987, it wowed audiences with a who’s who of television tough guys in a massive leading ensemble. Arnold Schwarzenegger led the pack, with Bill Duke, Jesse Ventura, Carl Weathers, and others rounding out the monster-hunting mercenary squad. In the film, Weathers flexes his spectacular physique, rivaling Schwarzenegger’s biceps in peak form during an arm-wrestling scene now commonly used as a meme to depict unity in the face of contrast.

Carl Weathers has perhaps one of the greatest scenes in the film, wherein his character’s arm is amputated by the Predator hunter after he launches a hail of gunfire on the alien. Weathers’ character and the classic scene are even referenced in the 2015 video game Mortal Kombat X, where both the Predator and Weathers’ character Dillon are playable DLC fighters.

2. Happy Gilmore (1996)

Carl Weathers managed to flex his comedic skills in the 1996 movie Happy Gilmore alongside star Adam Sandler. In the film, Weathers appears as Derick “Chubbs” Peterson, a retired professional golfer who can no longer play the sport after losing his hand to a wild alligator. After witnessing the title character’s impressive slap shot, Chubbs offers to become his mentor, teaching him the basics of golf with the repeated mantra “It’s all in the hips.”

Carl Weathers reprised this role in another Adam Sandler movie titled Little Nicky, showcasing just how impactful the character of Chubbs truly was. In Little Nicky, Chubbs plays a new role as a mambo instructor, retaining his iconic phrase, as mambo is also “all in the hips.” While Weathers’ roles were primarily action thrillers and high-intensity dramas, his comedy resume also showcases some of his finest work.

1. Rocky III (1982)

Carl Weathers reprises his role as Apollo Creed in the third installment of the Rocky franchise as a friend and mentor to the titular boxer. Though Creed made a fantastic antagonist in the first two films, his relationship with Rocky Balboa truly begins to shine through in Rocky III, when Rocky seeks the former Heavy Weight Champion’s guidance to take down his biggest and baddest opponent yet. Rocky III ends on the classic image of Rocky and Creed sparring in a friendly one-on-one fight with no cameras or audience, engaging in the ring as brothers, rather than true opponents.

This final friendly brawl was referenced in the first Creed film, with Rocky expressing to Apollo’s son how much admiration he had for his father. In the film, Rocky says that Creed won their final match, though it is left unclear whether this is true. Regardless, the development of the friendship between the iconic fictional boxers serves as the greatest element of any of the Rocky films, headed by Carl Weathers’ exceptional dramatic ability.

Donald Glover & “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” Widely Praised

Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the Prime TV remake of the iconic film of the same name, has opened to widespread praise. The show, which stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in the lead roles, opened to an 87% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The show has been widely praised for deviating from the vibe of the original film and being powered by the very real chemistry between Glover and Erskine. Audiences were a little cooler on the show, giving it a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Overall, the general takeaway is that the eight-episode series “surpasses” the original material in myriad ways.

However, critics have noted that fans of the original should not go into the show expecting the same vibes as the film. The sexiness is still there, it’s just very different. One critic noted that the show is “so bizarre” that audiences will “either love it or hate it”. Despite this, the show is already proving to be a major successful for Amazon’s media production arm. Have you watched Mr. & Mrs. Smith? Let us know what you thought in the comments.

Donald Glover Says Brad Pitt Gave Him No Advice For Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Meanwhile, Glover also recently revealed that Brad Pitt gave him no advice after being cast in the show. Glover told The Tonight Show that the actor “Brad Pitted” his way through their interaction – being very charming but ultimately not saying a whole lot. Pitt also reportedly told Glover he’d “do a great job” but didn’t give anything more concrete than that. It remains to be seen how Pitt feels about the show now that critics have lauded Glover above him.
