Ransom, Conway The Machine, & V Don Unite For 10-Track Effort “Chaos Is My Ladder 2”

Ransom and Conway the Machine had underground hip-hop fans chomping at the bit about a week ago. The unofficial duo put out a track called “Higher Killer” alongside Lloyd Banks and producer V Don. Since its release on August 30, the record has garnered quite a bit of traction, raking in over 76,000 streams. Fans felt they were picking up the scent of an upcoming collaboration project. Well, they were spot on the money because Ransom and Conway are here a week later with Chaos Is My Ladder 2.

Given the straight-forward nature of the lead single, we were predicting that this would be a fairly simple listening experience. What we mean by that is that we saw a scenario where the project would be pretty short and not toy with the listener. Give us what we need and nothing more. That’s exactly what we are getting from Ransom, Conway, and V Don. It’s 10 cuts and it clocks in at around 27 minutes. In all honesty, that’s what we were hoping for. While they are certainly great MCs from a rapping perspective, we don’t think they can differentiate things enough to keep things sounding fresh. Conway’s last project was a pretty good example of this. But overall, this is a tight and very fine tape from two of NY’s most prolific acts.

Fred Again.. Will Leave You In A State Of Bliss With “Ten Days”

One of London’s most eclectic musical talents, fred again.., is back with a new project, ten days. This tape is here pretty soon after his USB outing which was more a collection of tracks that was built upon over the last two years. Currently, that number is up to 16 and clocks in at around one hour and six minutes of material. Tons of rappers land on that offering, including Baby Keem, Future, Rico Nasty, Lil Yachty, Anderson .Paak, and more. Interestingly, the latter’s track, “places to be”, which also features CHIKA, is on ten days.

However, USB features two remixes, and not the final cleaned up version. Even though fred again.. is dropping this at the tail-end of the summer and it does have a lot of uplifting vibes on it, it still feels like you can play at any time. With the colder months approaching, moods may swing in the opposite direction. But to cure that, all you have to do is spin ten days and you’ll be instantly better. A lot of the beats on have a cheery, whimsical, or just possess some high energy. The first half features more of the latter, whereas the second half becomes more toned down in some respects. He really did curate a fun palette of soundscapes, and the guests fill in the gaps perfectly.

G Herbo Has Some Fun On “Big Swerv” Mixtape

G Herbo has focused on more pressing topics in his music over the last couple of years at times. Because of that, he’s been getting more personal on his records. However, according to HipHopDX, the Chicago drill specialist wanted to do something different this time around. “Not everybody has been in the streets. And not everybody had to experience violence to the levels that I’ve experienced violence. I was always vulnerable and talked about it through my music,” Herbo said about previous efforts. “So I want to talk about having fun, I want to talk about traveling the world, and living life, and fashion, and stuff that everybody loves, that everybody can relate to”. The latter quote from G Herbo is about his newest mixtape, Big Swerv.

You can certainly those looser vibes on songs like “Ten” with Sexyy Red, “Influence”, and “Trim”, for example. The production is still intimidating and dark, so not all of what’s made Herbo over the years is missing entirely. Big Swerv was announced in early August and only had one single released ahead of time. That was “Shoot” with rising MC Skilla Baby. Speaking of features, him and Red are just two. 21 Savage, BabyDrill, fellow Illinois native Chief Keef, and Rob49 are here too. Let us know what you think of G Herbo’s 14-song effort Big Swerv with the links below.

The Notorious B.I.G.’s Estate Preps For 30th Anniversary Reissue Of “Ready To Die” With “For The Respect” EP

There’s no doubt that The Notorious B.I.G. made one of the most lauded and beloved hip-hop albums of all time with Ready to Die. It’s a pure masterclass in East Coast hip-hop, flows, and production choices. Even though it was released back in 1994, it still sounds quite timeless, which is just another reason why its regarded as a true classic. You could poo-poo this fact, but the album has also been quite successful during the streaming era. It’s got well over a few billion streams overall with iconic tracks such as “Gimme the Loot”, “Juicy”, “Warning”, “Big Poppa”, all over 100 million plays. Over the years, Ready to Die has received a handful of remasters both in 2005 and 2015, respectively. Interestingly, though, his debut project has never received a unique anniversary edition. Life After Death received one for its 25th back in 2022, but now it’s Ready to Die‘s time.

Back in July, multiple reports, including one from Yahoo!, revealed that a special 30th anniversary copy would be released on the 13th of September, the drop date for the original back in ’94. It will be a “limited-edition 2-LP reissue” and “will feature a reimagined cover art featuring a photo of Biggie Smalls, the late Brooklyn rapper’s G subway stop and the Brooklyn Bridge”. There will be a black vinyl available on Rhino which is Biggie’s website. Additionally, “Barnes & Noble will also have a color vinyl edition for sale on the same day”. But before that happens, his estate has released an EP called Ready To Die: For The Respect, which features six tracks from the original.

LL Cool J Makes His Triumphant Return With New Album “The FORCE”

LL Cool J is here. The legendary rapper has released his first new album in over a decade. Not only that, but LL has aggressively promoted the album by doing interviews and podcast appearances. It feels like the New York spitter has more passion harnessed into The FORCE than he did his previous effort, Exit 13. He certainly has more guest features. The FORCE has a staggering lineup of artists from multiple eras of hip hop. It’s a testament to LL Cool J’s reputation that he could take a decade off, then come back and secure features from the likes of Nas and Eminem. Plus, the album is actually good.

“Saturday Night Special” remains a standout, with its old school production and smooth turns from both Rick Ross and Fat Joe. The collaborations between LL Cool J and his roster of guests consistently make for the best songs on the album. “Proclivities” gets LL back in smooth talking, slow jam mode, and it has a killer Saweetie verse to boot. Busta Rhymes brings out LL’s energetic side on “Huey In the Chair,” while “Praise Him” sees LL Cool J and Nas swap bars over another vintage beat. The solo cuts on The FORCE are solid, “Post Modern” and “Basquiat Energy,” in particular, but they do lack the hunger and the spark that LL gets whenever he’s feeding off others. A definite improvement over Exit 13, and overall, the best LL has sounded in a long time. No “Accidental Racist” train-wrecks here.

YTB Fatt’s “On Zai” Deluxe EP Brings Out The Best In The Rapper

YTB Fatt has one of the most distinct voices in the game right now. It’s mumbly and off-kilter. It doesn’t sound on beat half the time. That said, there’s something compelling about the rapper. YTB Fatt sounds so different than his peers that his eccentricities become features and not bugs. The deluxe EP On Zai is a perfect example. At 6 songs and only 16 minutes, Fatt trimmed all the, well, fat that his longer releases have. “Free Bank” sees YTB Fatt trash talk over a twisty, snyth-heavy instrumental. It’s the second song on the album, though, that speaks more to the sound of On Zai.

“Shoot My Gun” has a transformative beat. Fatt waxes poetic on a series of grim topics, over a drum beat that provides little more than bass hits. It’s jarring upon first listen, but could very well be one of the most unique and interesting Fatt songs yet. The EP doesn’t suffer from inaccessibility, however. “Lonely” and “Hustler” are built around iconic R&B samples, which gives YTB Fatt’s flow a more appealing vibe than on the first two tracks. Lil Dann and Lil Durk represent the only other artists to provide features, and they both do their thing. Durk, in particularly, gets his time to shine on “Last Time” and practically steals the show in the process. On Zai is not going to change the minds of Fatt critics, but fans will love it.

Glokk40Spaz Goes For The Throat On New Album “Da Real Oso”

Glokk40Spaz makes aggressive music. Nothing pretty here, just raw energy. It’s what fans respond to, and what the rapper is best at. Da Real Oso is a prime example of playing to one’s strengths on record. It’s an impressively one-dimensional album, in that the beats hit hard, the bars are bleak, and Spaz is giving it his all. Lyrical diversity and musical experimentation be damned. The opening song, “My Last Breath,” is the album in microcosm: fraught and hypnotic. It sounds both cold-blooded and emotional. The bass gets blown completely out on the bombastic second song, “POTHEAD & STONER.”

The cohesion in sound proves to be a double-edged sword. While Glokk40Spaz’s vision is unwavering in its focus and musical intent, it can get samey. “505” feels like a retread of “POTHEAD & STONER,” and it doesn’t help that the song comes right after the latter. “How Vampz Feel” and “You Not Da Only 1,” on the other hand, showcase what the rapper can do within his relatively limited framework. These songs are eccentric and bold, vocally matching their bombastic beats. “How Vampz Feel,” in particular, feels like a lost Playboi Carti song. Glokk40Spaz has a bright musical future ahead if he keeps refining his sound.

Dom Corleo Celebrates Turning 22 With Sophomore Album “Under My Influence”

Dom Corleo is somebody who we have said doesn’t have too distinct of a style. However, the Fremont, California rapper did have us a little more intrigued with what he did with Veeze on “duh duh duh”. The track had quite a bit of personality thanks to the instrumental choice. The zig-zagging string sections and glitchy piano keys were playful and we do have to show a little love to the now 22-year-old’s performance. It’s blunt in a good way and he does ride the instrumental very well. After hearing it, all we could hope for is that it would translate in some way down the line. Well, impressively, Dom Corleo translates that momentum over to his newest album, Under My Influence.

It’s actually his sophomore tape and he released it to help extend his birthday celebration. Leading up to the release of Under My Influence, Corleo would go on to release “eighteen”, one of his most personal records to date. That’s another reason why this project succeeds. You get to learn a little bit more about him and his life behind closed doors. Here, we learn that he’s lost his grandmother and also has a daughter. The song is touching, as he explains how he grew up so fast and now after witnessing how quick life moves, he doesn’t want his child to get old. Fans have been reacting very positively to Under My Influence, and we can see why. Corleo is on to something, and we hope it continues!

RZA Shocks Fans With Classical Music Album, “A Ballet Through Mud”

RZA has gone in a new direction with his latest album, A Ballet Through Mud, which sees him collaborating with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra as led by Christopher Dragon. Rather than a hip-hop release, RZA taps into the genre of classical music for the project. “I found my old book of lyrics that were written from the age 14 to 19, and I wanted to find a way to put music to it, so I started that as the foundation, storytelling in a way that was not just confounded to the lyrics,” he told BET of the decision. “It was almost like the story started lyrically, and then I wanted to express it without having to say anything.”

Speaking with PEOPLE for a new interview, RZA also revealed that Andre 3000’s recent flute album, New Blue Sun, served as an inspiration for his new project. He began by recalling meeting up with the legendary rapper during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We both talked about [our albums] and went on our way and, of course, he did it. He put [New Blue Sun] out,” RZA said. “And I think the beauty of his is that it didn’t take as many people to translate. That’s the glitch when you’re dealing with an orchestra of 60 people. But when his album came out, it just inspired me to keep going. Like, ‘Yo, I’m going to put mine out as well.’” Check out A Ballet Through Mud below. Muni Long Shows Off Her Growth On New Album “Revenge”

Muni Long has come a long way since securing her first-ever Grammy for her 2022 hit, “Hrs and Hrs.” On Friday, the songstress unleashed her second album, Revenge. On the 14-track project, she delivers all of the honesty and emotion one would expect while putting both her growth as an artist and as a person on full display.

She chatted about the project with Billboard earlier this month and called it the “R&B album of the year,” setting the bar high and revealing what she thinks fans will love about it. “First of all, you have to be a bit deluded to do this [music],” she explained at the time. “But I have to believe that even before the album is finished. I had to know that’s what I wanted to do as I’m doing it because that energy and that frequency have to be infused into the music. That’s something a lot of music is missing on the energetic and confidence level — before anyone else validates you. You can tell that I didn’t just throw these tracks together. This project was well thought out and well-intentioned. People are going to appreciate that, and resonate with the music on a deeper level.”

What do you think of Muni Long’s new album, Revenge? Which of the tracks is your favorite? Does it live up to the hype? Share your thoughts in the comments section and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates. Check it out down below.
