Amine Showcases His Musical Range On Eclectic “.mp3s” EP

Amine has been keeping a low profile the last few years. He dropped a chilled out collab album with KAYTRANADA in 2023, but fans have to go all the way back to 2021 for a solo release. This is partially why the .mp3s EP is so exciting. It proves Amine is back up and running. There are four songs littered throughout this brief project, and we’re happy to report that all of them are good. They stand on their own, yet together they provide a broad picture of Amine’s range as a rapper. Fans already got to hear two of the songs before the EP’s release: “Passenger Princess” and “Adam.”

“Passenger Princess” is the most traditional piece of hip hop on the EP. Amine and Smino trade bars over a catchy soul chop. The duo have chemistry, and while they share eccentric deliveries, they sound varied enough to stand out. “Adam” is an guitar based ballad that sees Amine shift down into a Brockhampton sound. It works, and proves that he may even be an underrated vocalist. The new songs on here, “s2wik” and “Wingz” are similarly varied. The former is one of the strangest songs Amine has dropped yet, a tiny, glitchy electronic ballad with Autotune. “Wingz” sees him dig back into traditional rap territory alongside Cardo Got Wings. It’s brief, it’s fun, and you’ll like it.

YTB Fatt Keeps It Short And Simple With New Album “The Richest Foxx”

YTB Fatt has a tricky flow to replicate. He sounds like he’s running out of breath at times. Other times, he sounds like he just woke up and realized he was in the middle of a verse when he dozed off. These aren’t inherently bad things. They give his vocals a lot of character. It helps when he keeps his projects concise, and refrains from loading them up with tons of skits and repetitive songs. The Richest Foxx wisely keeps things short and simple. At eight songs and 20 minutes, the album allows YTB Fatt to flex his unique flow and songwriting skills over songs that boast a lot of replay value.

“FREE SMURK, BIG EDDIE & CAM” is the most heartfelt song on the album, musically and lyrically. The mournful piano keys sound fantastic over the snappy drum beat. The lyrics, meanwhile, see YTB Fatt wax poetic about friends who have been locked up. He sounds undeniably passionate talking about the likes of Lil Durk and Big Eddie. It’s hard not to be won over. “FATT DISS” and “HAHA” maintain the gritty menace of the opener, but they give YTB Fatt the chance to flash a bit more charisma. “HAHA” is an especially catchy song thanks to the rapper’s nonstop flow. The song takes two minutes to introduce drums, which means YTB Fatt is basically rhyming a capella. It’s a creative flourish unexpected as it is welcome.

Kenny Mason Perfects His Moody Vibe On New Album “Angel Eyes”

Kenny Mason doesn’t make happy music. The rapper has developed a signature sound that is both weary and focused. He’s always locked in, but there’s a tiredness, and a cynicism, that informs even his most upbeat songs. It lends grit and authenticity to everything he does, and this continues to be the case on his new album, Angel Eyes. While not as ambitious in scope as Kenny Mason’s previous work, Angel Eyes gives him the opportunity to hone his craft and deliver some of his most atmospheric songs to date.

One needn’t look further than the album opener, “INTUITION,” for proof. A lengthy voicemail segues to a blaring breakbeat and a Kenny Mason verse in which he reflects on his childhood. It’s shockingly minimal in terms of musicality. All we hear are the drums, Mason’s voice, and a synth line that sounds pulled out of a John Carpenter film. Most rappers would not be able to pull off such a stripped down approach, but Mason pulls it off with aplomb. “HOW TO SURVIVE” has a bouncier instrumental, but most of Angel Eyes is actually typified by a reliance on guitars and and wistful vocal samples. It is not a happy album, but Kenny Mason’s ability to channel his pain is undeniably compelling.

J Cole Rereleases Debut Mixtape “The Come Up, Vol. 1” On Streaming

J Cole is preparing fans for The Fall Off. The rapper has been teasing his final album, and subsequent retirement, for a couple years now. Cole’s decision to launch a podcast series on November 18 has made this seem like concrete, however. The rapper launched Inevitable on streaming platforms, which details the making of each of his projects. Naturally, he kicked things off with his first mixtape, The Come Up, Vol. 1. What fans didn’t expect, though, is that the podcast would coincide with the streaming debut of the 2007 tape.

J Cole delighted fans around the world on Tuesday, when he uploaded his very first project to Apple Music and Spotify for the first time ever. The Come Up, Vol. 1 sees him establish a lot of the song titles and trends that he would perfect in the years to come, such “Dollar and a Dream” and “Simba.” The tape also sees Cole work out his talents while emulating the rap icons who came before him. JAY-Z and Kanye West influence is all over The Come Up, Vol. 1. J Cole freestyles over three classic West beats, as well as JAY’s “Dead Presidents.” Fans also get to hear Cole’s first batch of instrumentals under his own name, as opposed to his original moniker, Therapist. It’s great to see The Come Up, Vol. 1 on streaming.

Tha God Fahim Reunites With Nicholas Craven For Second Installment Of The “Dump Gawd: Hyperbolic Time Chamber Rap” Series

Tha God Fahim, one of Georgia’s most effortless lyricists, and Montreal’s underground producing titan, Nicholas Craven, are back it. These two have been underappreciated since they got into the game, and they are showing everyone why they need more praise. These cross-country buddies have been extremely prolific for years, and 2024 has been no different. They are continuing to do most of their damage on Bandcamp and YouTube, dropping off four projects in a month-long span. Tha God Fahim and Nicholas Craven kicked things off on October 24 by revitalizing their Tha Myth Who Never Quit series with the second and third entries.

That trilogy is five years old now and it’s one that has quickly become a fan-favorite run of tapes. Another one you can now throw in there is one that saw its inception take place about a week and a half ago. That would be Dump Gawd: Hyperbolic Time Chamber Rap. Tha God Fahim and Craven extended the Time Chamber Rap collection to 2 with eight tracks, which some of the best soul chops/loops you’ll hear all year. Like most of their bodies of work, its on those two platforms we mentioned earlier. If you want to support the artists in full, you can click the first “[Via]” link to purchase the digital album. Or if you check out the second shortcut, that will take you to the YouTube page.

Desiigner Enters A “Rebirth” After A Six-Year Hiatus

When Desiigner came onto the scene back in 2016 with his breakout record “Panda,” there were a lot of skeptics. Many were labeling him a blatant Future rip off and prediciting that he would become a one-hit wonder. However, thanks to songs like “Tiimmy Turner” and “Outlet,” and a feature on Kanye West’s posse cut “Champions,” he seemed to quite a handful of doubters. However, after 2018’s L.O.D. project, Desiigner would continue to fade and steadily. Things wouldn’t get any better even as of recently, as the Brooklyn rapper and singer would run into some wild legal trouble. In 2023, he would be charged for indecent exposure while on a flight back to the states from Japan.

He addressed the bizarre situation in a sit-down with Adam22 on his No Jumper platform claiming that it was due to his lack of sugar in his body due to the vegan diet he was on. He also said the medication he was on caused him to act out. Again, this left many skeptical. Based on all of this, it’s clear that Desiigner has not had the easiest of career trajectories for a while. However, it seems that he’s doing better now and back to dropping new music. He’s been releasing a lot singles, but the gap between L.O.D. and now is wide. Enter Rebirth, Desiigner’s third project. It’s a perfect title, as the East Coast act sounds focused and more mature on this concise eight-song tape. He says there’s even more music on the way, so maybe a Rebirth really is happening for him?

BlakeIana Is “Back In The Field” On Her Debut Mixtape

BlakeIANA is heading out and seeking to cause some problems with her first-ever long play, Back In The Field. It’s being billed as the St. Louis, Missouri native’s inaugural mixtape, which we think was a smart marketing move. The project doesn’t really follow a story nor does it aim to create one. It’s here for one thing and that’s to announce that BlakeIANA is trying to put her stamp on 2024 and beyond as a femcee not to play with. It was only a matter of time before something like would arrive, especially given the reception and backing from her peers and fans. From the release of her breakout hit “BING BONG” and its remix with Sexyy Red, she’s done nothing but ascend.

Speaking of the latter with her dastardly twin, it serves as the lead single for Back In The Field. Other teasers include “STL Finest,” “Pricey” with Moneybagg Yo, “See Us” featuring Skilla Baby, “Problem,” and “B.B.F.” BlakeIANA would even go on to give fans a pre-midnight two pack of “Right Now” and “Benefits” both of which include features from Hunxho and Tee Grizzley in particular. It might leave some wanting more in terms of fresh material but given where she’s at right now in her career, the more exposure the better. See what BlakeIANA has to offer the ratchet rap lane with the links below.

Jon Batiste Updates Some Of Beethoven’s Most Iconic Compositions On “Beethoven Blues”

Jon Batiste is a singer, songwriter, and overall, just a musician’s musician. The Louisiana native has worked with some of the biggest in the biz as well from Beyonce to Lana Del Rey, Lil Wayne, A$AP Rocky, and more. However, what the bandleader of Stay Human is also really good at is playing the piano. After all, he did go to school at the world-renowned institution known as Juilliard School. The reason we bring this up is because Jon Batiste is deploying this talent onto a brand-new endeavor, Beethoven Blues. Just like the title suggests, he’s putting a blues and jazz spin on multiple iconic compositions by the German-born icon.

So why did Batiste decide to remake such historic pieces of art? To put it simply, they were “due for an update.” He explains further with The Hollywood Reporter, “Jazz music has a lot of spontaneous composition, and early classical music also had a lot of spontaneous composition, yet its contemporary reality is so far away from that that you would imagine that jazz and classical music could never come together. And I find it to be a great thing that you can update it if you have the language and the ability and the craft to put them together. So, that’s why I thought, why not do it?” In our opinion, he would have made Beethoven pretty proud, and this looks to be just the first full piano/instrumental album for now. Hopefully, we get to hear him transform other historical pieces. But check out Beethoven Blues with the links below and listen to a master at work.

Dave East & AraabMuzik Link For A Luxurious & Gritty Collab Tape “Living Proof”

Dave East is here with his fifth official studio album, Living Proof, and he’s not dropping this alone. This is a new first for the Harlem spitter too, as he got to work with producer araabMUZIK exclusively for this venture. It’s worth noting though that they do have some history together, with the latter laying down beats for projects like Survival and Karma 3. Clearly, those times shared in the studio sold each other on just how great a full project could be between them. Sure enough, their assumptions were correct, because Dave East’s work with araabMUZIK might be some of the best chemistry he’s shared with another beat crafter.

Leading up to the release of Living Proof, “Buss Down” and “Percocet” were the singles kicking the rollout off. Overall, the jazzy, grand, and sort of grimy boom bap sounds you hear on both are a very accurate representation of the project’s direction. The beats on these two tracks, including many others such as “Walk Wit Me” and “The Other Side” are of high quality and really embrace East’s gravelly tone and the overall spirit of New York hip-hop. It makes sense though due to araab’s decorated past with Dipset and many other legends from the state.

Erick The Architect Gives Us New Looks BTS With “The Director’s Cut” Of His Solo Debut LP

One of the three Flatbush Zombies members is not only an architect, but also a director. That rapper we are referring to is Erick the Architect who has just left off The Director’s Cut to his stellar solo debut album, I’ve Never Been Here Before. This project, which was “35 years” in the making, hit streaming platforms in late February and was led by some quality singles such as “2-3 Zone,” “Shook Up,” and more.

However, Erick the Architect didn’t want to stop there with this record. Over the last month, he’s put out two new tracks, “Beverly Drive” and “CA$HMERE TEARS,” to tease this Director’s Cut. To no surprise, both of them were terrific listens. “Beverly Drive” heard him speak on his not so picture-perfect childhood, and how creating music was his paradise. “CA$HMERE TEARS” focuses more on New York and its many changes over the last 30 years and how Erick views them. While the other three Director’s Cut records aren’t as personal, they still shine production, flow, and writing wise. Check out “Denise’s Last Son,” “GRITS,” and “Boxes In My Basement,” below.
