Detroit Pistons Team With Michell & Ness for Merch Line To Celebrate Boxing Legend and Detroit Icon Joe Louis

AC11325

The Detroit Pistons have unveiled a new apparel collaboration inspired by Detroit boxing legend Joe Louis as part of their Black History Month activations. The club collaborated on the new merchandise line’s storytelling, strategy, and design with the Louis family and Mitchell & Ness. Starting February 23, the line will be available through Pistons313Shop.com, and on February 24, it will be available at the team store in Little Caesars Arena.

Tyrel Kirkham, the Pistons’ Vice President of Marketing and Brand Strategy, described the cooperation as a means for Detroiters and sports fans to commemorate a sports hero and legend’s championship heritage.

“Joe Louis’ transcendent career embodies the spirit and history of Detroit,” said Kirkham. “We always view merchandise collaborations as an opportunity to create more than just t-shirts and jerseys – we want them to represent the city that surrounds us and the culture that makes Detroit such a special place.  The legacy that Joe Louis carries is something the Pistons organization is honored to share and celebrate.”

Louis and his family relocated to Detroit when he was 12 years old in 1926. Louis’ legendary boxing career began here, rising from amateur to world heavyweight champion. Louis is widely regarded as one of the best boxers of all time, having held the heavyweight title for a record-breaking 12 years. Louis was more than a ring champion; he was a civil rights figure who overcame the racial restrictions that plagued professional sports at the time. The Monument to Joe Louis, commonly known as “The Fist,” was erected in Detroit’s Hart Plaza in 1986 as a symbolic commemoration of Louis’ historical significance.

“My family and I are grateful that the Detroit Pistons and the City of Detroit continue to do their part by remembering and highlighting my father and all those great men and women who came before us in an effort to inspire those currently in the global arena,” said Louis Barrow, II.

Throughout February, the Detroit Pistons celebrated Black History Month with several activations and partnerships. To begin off the month, the Pistons teamed up with the Rosa Parks Estate to honor the civil rights pioneer by offering free bus rides to all Detroit residents on several days, as well as awarding 500 Rosa Parks-inspired coats to DDOT drivers.

Ongoing and upcoming activities include an “HBCU Night” at Little Caesars Arena on February 26 when the Pistons take on the Boston Celtics, a team visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. on February 28, in-game honoring of prominent Detroit creatives and leaders throughout the month, and the 17th Annual Black History Month Scholarship Event, where high school seniors in Detroit will have a chance to win a scholarship.

Jay Z, Lil Baby, Meek Mill And Fanatics Buy Mitchell & Ness For $250 Million

Jay-Z and Fanatics Inc. have joined investors including Lil Baby, Maverick Carter, and Meek Mill to buy the throwback sports apparel designer Mitchell & Ness for $250 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin was especially excited to purchase the Philadelphia-based brand, which joins his collection of local businesses including part of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers.

“Growing up as a kid in Philadelphia we looked at Mitchell & Ness as a badge of pride, and I truly believe this legendary brand has no limit,” he said. Fanatics will own 75% of Mitchell & Ness, while the investment group, which also includes the family of TikTok star Charli D’Amelio, will own the rest. Mitchell & Ness is best known for designing and retailing the throwback jerseys that were so popular during the early 2000s and have since made a resurgence. Most recently, the brand collaborated with J. Cole’s Dreamer imprint to produce a series of custom NBA throwbacks bearing the Dreamer logo in place of the original teams’ logos. Ironically, Jay-Z now co-owns the creator of the jerseys he once famously threw under the bus on “What More Can I Say” in 2004.

Combined with Fanatics’ minority stake in the headwear retailer Lids acquired in 2018, Jay, Meek, and Rubin are living a millennial hip-hop fan’s sartorial dream come true. Fanatics has also been reportedly expanding outside of sportswear, acquiring Topps trading card company with the intent of turning it into a digital platform with internet gambling.

J. Cole Reveals The New Dreamer Jersey Collaboration With Mitchell & Ness

J. Cole well-documented love for basketball and his understated, ultra-comfy style have come together in his latest collaboration with throwback sportswear designer Mitchell & Ness. He revealed his new Dreamer X Mitchell & Ness throwback jersey collection after teasing it with the help of viral hoop phenom Hansel Enmanuel, who appeared in a video narrated by J. Cole praising the young, one-armed baller’s audacity to dream of a pro hoops career.

The jerseys are designed to look like ’90s-era NBA team jerseys, with the name Dreamer taking the place of the original team names on each. Included in the initial run are looks referencing the old-school aesthetics of the Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards (formerly the Baltimore Bullets), Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers, Golden State Warriors, Orlando Magic, and New Jersey Nets (now the Brooklyn Nets). Alas, my beloved Clippers are nowhere to be found, nor are the Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs, Seattle Supersonics, or any iteration of the Grizzlies (Vancouver or Memphis). I’m not sure if anyone even cares about the Utah Jazz (they can’t read this; they don’t have internet). Cole also posted several throwback jersey photos on Instagram to remind fans of their cultural impact (including the “bootleg” throwback he wore as a kid — an authentic NBA jersey, but not a Mitchell & Ness one, which was the THING back then).

The jerseys retail for $375 and are available on mitchellandness.com (for now, expect them to sell out quick).
