Today In Hip Hop History: Missy Elliott’s Sophomore LP ‘Da Real World’ Turns 25 Years Old!

On this date in 1999, Missy Elliott dropped her second full length studio album Da Real World on The Goldmind/Elektra imprint.

Produced primarily by Timbaland and Missy herself, Da Real World was Missy’s most street-savvy album, saturated with sexual innuendos and underground phrases that became common household statements. Fearing the sophomore slump, Missy changed the original name of the album She’s A Bitch for more commercial acceptance; and it worked. Da Real World is currently a doube platinum classic.

memorable singles from the album include “All In My Grill”, the salacious “Hot Boyz”(Remix) featuring Eve, Nas and Lil Mo and the former title track “She’s A Bitch”.

Salute to Missy and Timbaland for creating a piece of Hi[p Hop history!

Missy Elliott Will Continue Touring Despite Graves’ Disease Setbacks

Missy Elliott is in the midst of a career renaissance. The iconic rapper was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, and will embark on her first headlining tour in July. The former validated her talents as a musician, and the latter her star power. Unfortunately, health concerns have plagued the rapper over the last 15 years. Missy Elliott was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease in 2008, which led to severe weight loss and dizzy spells. She’s not going to let her diagnosis slow her down, however.

The rapper told People Magazine that she plans to carry out her tour dates without the assistance of medication. She told the outlet that the first three years after her diagnosis were extremely difficult, but she’s learned to overcome it without having to rely on external treatment. “Every day I wake, I’m blessed to be here and in good health,” she conceded. “I’m feeling so much better now. That was a run. Every now and then you get a little ache in the leg or the knee, but outside of that, I feel good.” Missy Elliott divulged the secrets for her medication-less treatment, and they were simpler than one might think.

According to the rapper, a healthy lifestyle changed everything. “Under my doctor s supervision, I’ve been off medication,” she noted. “I’m completely managing the condition thru diet and exercise.” It’s comforting to know that Missy Elliott will be able to fulfill her tour, given how excited she was to do it back in April. “Fans have been asking me to tour forever,” she wrote in a press release. “But I wanted to wait until I felt the time was right. “Because I knew if I was ever going to do it, I had to do it big. And I had to do it with family.” The “family” in question consists of longtime Missy collaborators Ciara, Busta Rhymes, and Timbaland.

Missy Elliott is not letting Graves’ Disease slow her performing. She’s also continuing to make music at an impressive rate. She hasn’t put out an album since The Cookbook in 2005, but she told Variety that she’s sitting on six albums worth of material. “I probably have at least six albums worth of music at this point,” the rapper revealed. “I believe that it’ll be a day that everybody’s going on about their way and then you just look online and see an album date from me. So yeah, I think that’ll happen sooner than later.” It doesn’t sound like the Missy renaissance is ending anytime soon.

There’s a whole lotta drama online between Cardi B and BIA. For well over a year, the pair has exchanged subtle jabs online. On May 31, their tension was officially transferred to wax.

Cardi B fired off at BIA in her guest verse on GloRilla and Megan Thee Stallion’sWanna Be” remix. Today (June 2), BIA responded with a track of her own, “Sue Meee.” The night before its release, BIA teased a shady unreleased song on Instagram Live.

Shortly after gaining wind of BIA’s lines, Cardi B took to her page to clap back and even threatened to take legal action over BIA’s accusations of adultery and supposedly spreading a fake sex tape.

“I’m a sue you and you got to come with receipts,” Cardi said. “And not social media receipts, court receipts. I will get every little f*cking red penny that you ever f*cking make b*tch. Every money that you make off your publishing. So find something safe to do.”

BIA laughed off Cardi’s legal plan in the caption of her upload. “Sue me,” she wrote. “That’s not hip hop 😂.”

Cardi B claimed that BIA took to her private Instagram page to post a story, saying she isn’t afraid to face litigation: “Good luck you think I’m Tasha K.”

“Girl. Ask Tasha K. She couldn’t even lie on my p*ssy,” replied Cardi.

Cardi B Has Reservations About Her Sophomore Album Even With Missy Elliott’s Support

Cardi B has finally begun rolling out her sophomore album this year and her fans have been digging the lead singles. Both “Like What (Freestyle)” and “Enough (Miami)” have conveyed uber levels of confidence with convincing flows and banging beats. However, sometimes it is good to fake it until you make it. That seems to be the energy that the Bronx native is giving off based on a recent tweet. According to HipHopDX, Cardi B expressed how truly nervous she is to drop this album, even with some incredible support from Missy Elliott. This all began after the legend replied to a X user saying that Cardi needs to stick to what she knows fans will like.

Missy essentially said “f*** that” and to shoot for the stars. “Absolutely yes it’s the time to experiment take it from someone who experimented and many others which allowed them to NOT be BOXED in to one sound and style… I can name tons who each of their albums sounded nothing like the one before😉” That is when Cardi came in and revealed how she is handling all of this.
