In a recent interview with Cassius, actor and Wu Tang Clan front man Method Man says that he’s like to tackle the role of Bishop, a human mutant who is also a descendant from the Aborigines of Australia.
Meth says that he’s been planning to play Bishop for quite some time, despite his success in no-fictional roles from 50 Cent’s Power series as well as his early supporting role on HBO’s The Wire.
“I was just putting it out there to see if I could hook something,” Meth said. “Those guys at the MCU, they know their stuff. I haven’t had any problems with any of their casting choice so far. So whoever gets the job… I think Omar Sy did an excellent job as Bishop, but that was before MCU. If they chose him again, I think he’d kill it. There’s a few people out there. But if they’re willing to give me a shot, I’d go for it. Plus, I’ve done all the research already.”
Bishop became a member of Professor X’s elite police force after moving to the States, displaying the power to suck up radiant and conductive energy deployed from his enemies before using the power against them.
Method Man has seized the spotlight once again, this time gracing the cover of Cassius Magazine to commemorate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. The feature, aptly titled ‘Method Man Hip-Hop 50,’ captures his enduring influence on the genre and his multifaceted journey through the realms of music and acting. Collaborations among artists are nothing new in the hip-hop world. However, the word takes a different meaning when two poetic winners combine their minds and voices. Such is the dynamic pairing of hip-hop giants Mic Nickels and Wu-Tang legend Method Man on their explosive track, “El Matador”. A perfect but unexpected collab between an untamed underground emcee and one of hip-hop’s most renowned voices, “El Matador” has made waves since it hit the streaming platforms in July.
The hard-hitting, anthemic track demands attention from the very first beat. Mic Nickels’ verse is a masterclass in storytelling, with the artist weaving a tale of struggle and triumph. His lyrics are raw and honest, painting a vivid picture of life in the inner city. Method Man’s verse, on the other hand, is a display of his trademark flow and wordplay. His lyrics are clever and witty, with the artist effortlessly switching between different rhyme schemes.
“The idea behind the track was to discuss how one deals with their opponents, almost how a matador plays with their aggressor,” Mic Nickels explains. “The premise came to me after reading The Sun Also Rises, by Hemingway. I wrote and recorded it before any emcee listened, so it doesn’t cater toward Meth or anyone else’s style. Just pure poetry.” Method Man came in after MF DOOM, whom Mic Nickels initially approached for the collabo, passed before the project was ready. It’s been a match made in hip-hop heaven.
Since its release, “El Matador” has been well-received by fans, with many praising the duo’s chemistry and the song’s hard-hitting beat. Several reviewers have described it as a “heady hip-hop success” and a “lyrical masterpiece,” solidifying Mic Nickels’ position as a formidable solo artist. His skills as a producer prominently shone through the track’s hard-hitting beat and powerful lyrics that are as entertaining as they are thought-provoking. “El Matador’s” bass-heavy energy doesn’t disappoint either.
An independent trailblazer in the music industry, Mic Nickels has been known to create masterpieces that have entertained fans for 25 years. He is one of those who worked alongside industry giants like Ian Hendrickson-Smith from The Roots, Jean Baylor, Timbo King, Rah Digga, Lawrence Leathers, Brandon “Bizzy” Hollemon, and Kurious, to name a few. He has also expressed his excitement with the latest collabo. “It was incredible,” he explains. “A complete honor for him to hear my music and say, ‘Yeah, I can get with that!’”
The track was distributed by DJ Sandman’s Illsboro Records and accompanied by an animated music video. The video, featuring the duo as urban superheroes, pays homage to NYC’s finest in graphic book-esque style. Its cinematic backdrop perfectly complements the song’s lyrics, delivering Mic Nickels’ intended message to his fans in an engaging and visually appealing style. “El Matador ” is the final track in the OG’s latest album, Bars for Days, which also features his ethnographic memoir with the same title and cover. “Readers can access the album directly from the book and will find certain stories corresponding with the music directly,” he adds. The track and its accompanying music video are available on all streaming platforms.
Method Man is ready to take his acting career to the next level. In a new interview with CASSIUS, the Wu-Tang rapper spoke about his desire to enter the MCU. In recent years, Method Man has seemingly pivoted away from music and focused on acting. The rapper has been talks to play X-Men character Bishop in an upcoming film. Lupin‘s Omar Sy previously portrayed the role. “I was just putting it out there to see if I could hook something,” he told the publication.
“Those guys at the MCU, they know their stuff. I haven’t had any problems with any of their casting choice so far. So whoever gets the job.”He continued: “I think Omar Sy did an excellent job as Bishop, but that was before MCU. If they chose him again, I think he’d kill it.” Meth added, “There’s a few people out there. But if they’re willing to give me a shot, I’d go for it. Plus, I’ve done all the research already.”
“I’ve Done All The Research Already,” Method Man Says
An avid comic book collector, the rapper also opened up about how X-Men has a significant impact on his moral compass. “The code of Bushido, honor,” he began. “As I got older I seen that—I didn’t understand it then, but I understand it now—but it was an internal fight for him always questioning whether he was more man or animal and how much he would give into his base instinct, violence. So yeah, a lot of that now I take in stride. It was a template for my way of life so to speak.”
Meth also spoke about how he’s been able to stay relevant over the years. He noted the dangers of letting one’s ego get out of control. “…There’s nothing like getting an ego-stroked man, but it becomes very addictive and when [it] isn’t up to par with your standards, you tend to slide into seclusion to the point where you become a recluse. When you start valuing other people’s opinion of you more than your own opinion of yourself, that’s when you have a problem.”
Now, he is back doing great things once again. On Wednesday (August 9) he showed up for a tribute show for Heltah Skeltah and the late icon Sean Price. Method Man rocked the stage and the crowd in a passionate performance that is sure to be in good spirits with Price’s family, friends, and rap partner, Rock. Price passed away unexpectedly in his Brooklyn apartment while he was sleeping back in 2015. Method Man has supported Rock since Price’s unforeseen death. Back in 2017, the two collaborated as part of Rock’s first solo album Rockness A.P.(After Price) on the song called “Camp Wu.”
The tribute show was held at SOB’s in New York City and even though Heltah Skeltah has lost an icon in Sean Price, Rock refuses to quit on the duo. Rock took the time to thank Wu-Tang’s finest on Twitter for his selflessness. He says “Shouts everybody who came thru for Sean and Bodied it… But I have to absolutely give a solo shout to @methodman. Meth ain’t ask for NOTHING! No flights, no cash, no bottles, nothing! He did this on the strength of Sean and his wife. Like it’s supposed to be! Super Salute.”

Method Man has been a busy man for most of his life. His ultra-successful rap career will be one that is etched into the books of the strongest runs in the genre. Furthermore, this has allowed him to share so many incredible stories, struggles to make it in music, and his mental health journey. He explains all of this in his latest interview with Men’s Health. They assisted in celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and its effects on the world.
One helpful piece of advice he detailed eloquently was how he has steered as clear as possible from a constant virus that runs through rap. That is beef between other artists and there are some legendary ones to recall. Drake and Meek Mill, Gucci Mane and Jeezy, the list is extensive. However, Method Man is one of the few to escape the traps of getting involved in personal bouts. You might think it is an elaborate process with crazy methods, but the 52-year-old keeps it bare bones.
Method Man simply puts it, “I just mind my business.” He continued to say that avoiding clubs and after parties played a big role. The Wu-Tang member also thinks it has a lot to do with the respect level for him and his clan. “I had a big crew. Ain’t nobody really wanna f**k with us like that, ya dig? We didn’t have a lot to prove any muthaf*****g way. We always came humble. period.’”
What are your thoughts on Method Man being able to stay away from the drama in the hip-hop genre? What is the biggest rap beef of all time in your opinion? Which one is your favorite and which one is the dumbest? We want to hear all of your answers in the comments section below.
