Six More Of The Greatest NBA Player Cameos In Music Videos Of All Time

Basketball players have been appearing in music videos for a pretty long time now. Earlier this year, we looked at some notable examples of this, which included some older examples (Shaq appearing in the video for “Make ‘Em Say Uhh!”) and some newer ones (DeMar DeRozan’s highly-publicized cameo in the video for “Not Like Us”).

Fortunately for us, that was only the tip of the iceberg, as there are plenty of other examples of times when musicians reached out to NBA players and asked them to pop up in the video for one of their songs. And today, we wanted to dive into a few more of these, starting with one of the more surprising cameos we can remember…

Kawhi Leonard: “Way 2 Sexy” by Drake featuring Future and Young Thug

Kawhi Leonard has managed to turn being a boring and laid-back guy into his brand. For how brilliant he is at his best on the basketball court, Leonard is known for being soft-spoken and keeping himself out of the spotlight. All of this is to say that when Kawhi showed up in “Way 2 Sexy” dressed in all white and joined Drake, Future, and Young Thug in essentially lampooning boy band music videos, well, I can safely say I did not see that coming.

Magic Johnson: “Remember The Time” by Michael Jackson

The legendary video for “Remember The Time” is all built around Jackson performing for Egyptian royalty, played in here by Eddie Murphy and Iman. But off to the side, Johnson is the herald who presents performers to Murphy and Iman. Shockingly, it seemed like Magic had a terrific time with the project, and earlier this year, he called getting to be in the video “one of the greatest thrills in my life.”

LeBron James: “Forever” by Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Eminem

Of course LeBron was going to be in this video in some capacity, as it was made for the 2008 documentary More than a Game, which followed around his high school team at St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron. He hops onto PokerStars before the track starts, and while we don’t see him in the video again, we get plenty of clips and photos from before he made it to the NBA. However, a few months after the song came out, we did get a famous clip of LeBron rapping along to Eminem’s verse in the waning moments of a Cavs-Lakers game.

Stephen Curry: “Lil Fish, Big Pond” by Tobe Nwigwe

Curry joined Nwigwe in the video for his 2023 release, which was part of the soundtrack for the Apple TV+ release, Stephen Curry: Underrated. In the video, the pair are fishing on a boat, and Curry lip syncs along to the first verse before viewers see that Nwigwe is also on the boat. A little later, the pair sit alongside one another in a stadium.

Metta Sandiford-Artest: “Nas Is Like” by Nas

If you blink, you’ll miss when the two Queens legends link up in the music video for the first track off of “I Am…” It shows Nas throughout Queensbridge, which both he and the former Ron Artest called home as they were growing up. While this is an extremely short cameo, Sandiford-Artest arrives, shows Nas some love, and then looks into the camera at the 1:24 mark.

Grant Hill: “Rockstar” by Nickelback

I’ll be honest with you: I am unsure why Grant Hill appeared in the music video for “Rockstar,” and funny enough, if you take his word for it, Grant Hill wasn’t 100 percent sure why, either. Anyway, the video famously has a ton of celebrities in it, and at one point, Hill shows up and is in the middle of signing a basketball in a gym while he lip syncs the line “sign a couple autographs so I can eat…” before the camera cuts to someone else. He then shows up later and lip syncs “with the movie stars.”

Magic Johnson Praises “Living Icon” Beyonce In Heartfelt Instagram Post

Beyonce’s new album, Cowboy Carter, has earned rave reviews from fans and critics alike. The pop icon has truly outdone herself with a body of work that blurs the lines between genre and form. Several huge names have taken to social media to praise Cowboy Carter, but one of the most effusive responses to the album came from an unexpected source: Magic Johnson. The NBA legend is officially a part of the Beyhive.

Magic hopped on Instagram the day Cowboy Carter dropped and penned a rave review of both the album and Beyonce’s impact on popular culture as a whole. The former Los Angeles Laker dubbed Beyonce a “living icon” and a “multifaceted force” in the music industry. He also went on to cite the numerous accolades the singer has accrued over the years, including 32 Grammys and 160 million albums sold. This is a clear instance of real recognizing real, given Magic’s historic pedigree on and off the court. If anyone knows true talent, it’s the all-time assists leader.

Magic Johnson Dubs Beyonce The GOAT

If the accolades and album co-sign weren’t effusive enough, Magic Johnson went a step further and declared Beyonce the “greatest female entertainer of all time.” He drew parallels between the singer and Michael Jackson, whom he considers the greatest male entertainer, and praised her for using her voice to uplift others. “I’m looking forward to seeing how you bring more representation into the country genre,” he wrote on IG. “Continue to use your platform to uplift and amplify the Black voice.”

The post was accompanied by a photograph of Magic standing next to Beyonce. The pairing of Magic and Beyonce might seem strange on paper, but the two have a public history. The NBA legend took the Grammys to task when Beyonce clinched her record-breaking 32nd win, claiming they should have done more to celebrate her achievement. “I don’t know if something can be done but to me, it was extremely disrespectful to Beyoncé and all of her work as an artist,” he tweeted. It’s safe to assume that Cowboy Carter will get the pop star back into the Grammy conversation.

Shannon Sharpe Obliterated After Saying Face Of NBA Must Be Married While Also Using Magic Johnson As An Example

Shannon Sharpe has been a phenomenal addition to the First Take crew. Overall, he has delivered some great takes, and he has solid chemistry with Stephen A. Smith. Now that he is no longer with Skip Bayless, it feels like he has more freedom to be himself. Furthermore, he has been doing big things with Club Shay Shay. It feels as though Sharpe is now a huge star in the broadcasting world, and that goes beyond just sports. However, he still has some questionable takes from time to time.

For instance, today, the First Take crew found themselves speaking about who the next face of the NBA will be. Moreover, they were trying to determine how this player will be figured out. Well, Sharpe chimed in with an interesting theory. He believes the player needs to be in some sort of public-facing stable relationship. For instance, LeBron James had Savannah, while Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were also married. Unfortunately, this take did not go over well as Stephen A. and JJ Redick were left stunned.

Shannon Sharpe Tries To Get Off A Take

Subsequently, fans flooded Twitter with some reactions to what was being said. Overall, they could not believe that Magic Johnson would be mentioned here. After all, he is someone who cheated on his wife quite a bit while he played in the NBA. Although he and Cookie are still together, the infidelity definitely invalidates the point Shannon was trying to make here. Beyond that, the point was a bit far-fetched to begin with. No one is really thinking about the players and who they might be married to.

Magic Johnson Speaks On Travis Kelce & Taylor Swift

Magic Johnson has said that the NFL is “very happy” with Travis Kelce dating Taylor Swift because of the amount of revenue it has generated. Magic’s comments came during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel. Specifically, Kimmel had noted that Magic should “get one of those Commanders to date Taylor Swift. It seems like you make so much money.”

Swift Fever has taken over the league after the singer and Chiefs tight end got together nearly two months ago. The early weeks of Swift’s attendance at Arrowhead Stadium led to a massive surge in viewership from young women, a demographic that the NFL has never previously captured. While the Kelce family isn’t overly thrilled about the attention that the relationship gets, the NFL has continued to milk it dry in terms of content and coverage.

Is Travis Kelce Joining Taylor Swift In South America?

Meanwhile, Kelce had a fun little exchange with his brother this week about whether he would be hitting up the Eras Tour in South America. However, Traylor fans will be left disappointed as Kelce refused to give a definitive answer. “I might just say f-ck it and just go somewhere nice, I don’t know. My skin’s getting real pale so I gotta go somewhere sunny,” Travis said on New Heights when asked by his brother if he had plans for the Chiefs’ bye week. When Travis added that he wanted to be “closer to the equator”, Jason shot back with a “South of the equator?”

Taylor Swift, Travis’ girlfriend, will be in South America for the next few weeks for the final 2023 shows on the Eras Tour. November 9-11 see her in Buenos Aires. Meanwhile, she will spend November 17-19 in Rio and November 24-26 in São Paulo. There had been speculation as to whether Kelce would join Swift in at least Argentina, given his convenient bye week. The other dates seem improbable given the Chiefs games on November 20 and 26.

Bears Win For First Time In 346 Days, Magic Johnson Rips Commanders

The Chicago Bears beat the Washington Commanders 40-20 on Thursday Night Football. While it only propelled the Bears to 1-4 on the season, it is a major milestone for the team. It ended a 14-game win streak and marked the Bears’ first victory since beating the Patriots in Week 7 of the 2022 season. Furthermore, it was the team’s first 40-point game since Week 16 of the 2020 season. “I think the emotion I felt literally until … the clock hit zero was relief. It’s been a long time coming to get this first win. We’ve got a lot of talent; we’ve just got to put it together. These types of performances can carry over, but we have to be able to execute and be in sync as a group,” tight end Cole Kmet said after the game.

Meanwhile, new Commanders co-owner Magic Johnson ripped into his team after the game. “Tonight the Commanders played with no intensity or fire. We didn’t compete in the first half and got down 27-3 heading into halftime. It was too big of a hole to climb out of and that is why we ended up losing 40-20,” the NBA legend tweeted after the game. The loss dropped Washington to 2-3 and marked their third consecutive loss.

Bears Legend Dick Butkus Dies

However, there was something else the Bears were fighting for other than their first win of the season. Hours before the game, it was announced that Bears legend and Hall of Famer Dick Butkus had died at the age of 80. Butkus was once called “The Most-Feared Man in the Game” and terroized offenses between 1965 and 1973. Despite being an eight-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro player, the Bears never made the playoffs while Butkus was on the team. After playing his collegiate years at Illinois, Butkus was drafted by both the NFL and AFL. However, he opted to stay close to home and chose the Bears over the Broncos.

After retiring, Butkus pursued acting and sports broadcasting and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1979. He also left a deep sporting legacy. His nephew Luke is a long-time NFL positional coach and currently works with the Green Bay Packers. Meanwhile, his grandson currently plays volleyball at UCLA. Furthermore, Butkus was heavily involved in philantophic work following his playing career. The Butkus award is given annually to the best linebacker at each of the high school, college, and pro levels. Furthermore, Butkus gave his name to a heart health foundation. His passing was marked by a moment’s silence before Thursday’s game.

WATCH: Magic Johnson Shuts Down Talk of Steph Curry Being Greatest Point Guard Ever

weday magic johnson

Magic Johnson isn’t trying to hear any of the talk that Stephen Curry is the greatest point guard in NBA History. Magic laid down the facts in a visit to the Zach Gelb Show on CBS Sports Radio.

“If he got more than 5 championships, if he got more than three Finals MVPs and three league MVPs, then he’s the greatest is he? If he got more than, you know, number one in assists all-time in the Finals, number two in double-doubles, number one in triple-doubles… If he got more than all those things, then he’s the best. But the last time I checked, he doesn’t. But everybody has to decide for themselves who the best is.”

Michael Jordan Has Stephen A. Smith Read His Magic Johnson V Steph Curry Take Live On Air

Earlier this week, Steph Curry said he is the best point guard in the history of the NBA. “Yes. It’s me and Magic is that the conversation? … Obviously, I have to answer that way,” the Warriors star said while appearing on Gilbert Arena’s podcast. Magic and Steph’s stats are surprisingly comparable – Curry has now played one more year than Johnson did (granted, Johnson cut his career short due to his HIV status). Sure, Curry is a pure PG while Magic started his career as a shooting guard but even so, Curry dominates most statistical categories between the two players.

Of course, this is one of those offseason debates that flares up when no one has anything better to talk about. Both players are elite and really at the end of the day, it’s just meaningless bragging rights. However, someone who is taking his very seriously. In fact, he’s so invested in the topic that he texted Stephen A. Smith at 6AM to provide the ESPN veteran with a statement to read on air.

Smith Reads Jordan’s Magic-Curry Take

“Good morning, sir,” Smith read. “Although greatest of anything is always a debate, I beg to differ on greatest point guard of all time, with what you said. Magic Johnson is easily the best point guard of all time. Steph Curry is very close, but not in front of Magic. You must define ‘point guard’ to really have a serious debate. Steph Curry is by far the best shooter of all time — yes, his movement has created many shots for his teammates, he’s a career 43 percent three-point shooter. But Magic Johnson invented the triple-double,” Smith continued. “Not true invented, but makes it more noticeable in terms of the impact on the game. Magic was the best. We can go on, but I don’t want to take up too much of your time. I know you get the point. By the way — Magic has five NBA championships.”

The text came after Smith agreed, and reiterated his agreement after the text, that Curry was the best PG of all time. “He asked me to read it on the air,” Smith said. “He said I’m not backing up for it. I’m tired of this argument about Magic Johnson not being the best point guard in the history of the game. He is the best point guard in the history of basketball. That is from Michael Jordan.” Perhaps Jordan will roll up to Bristol to further debate the topic in the near future.
