Today In Hip Hop History: LL Cool J Released Third LP ‘Walking With A Panther’ 34 Years Ago

On this day in Hip Hop history, LL Cool J released his third studio LP Walking with a Panther on Def Jam Recordings in 1989.

Peaking at #1 on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop chart and #6 on the Billboard 200, this album continued LL’s streak of commercially successful albums as well as served as one of Hip Hop’s early crossover projects.

During that era, Def Jam was working to bring Hip Hop to the forefront of the mainstream, and this album was geared to reinvent LL Cool J’s sound while retaining its Hip Hop integrity. Although it may have been publicly successful at achieving its goal, some critics have said this project may have brought LL’s street credibility into question.

Regardless of critical opinion, the appeal of this album outshines anything negative that could be said about it. The most impressive and respectable feat of this project is LL’s introduction as a self-produced MC. Throughout Walking with a Panther he proved that not only was he capable of knocking out hit after hit but was also a proficient beat maker. The original production team used to create the majority of LL’s better-known songs prior to this album, L.A. Posse, decided to part ways with Def Jam following a contractual disagreement. This altercation left only one member of the team, Dwanye Simon, left to work with LL Cool J in producing the entirety of the LP.

This project also toted some of LL Cool J’s biggest hit singles including: “Going Back to Cali” and “Jingling Baby.” Both of these singles are hallmarks of LL Cool J’s career and in their own way describe his career as a whole. LL’s appeal was from the beginning catered toward the female demographic while still retaining his “cool guy” demeanor in a way that it wasn’t awkward for males to also be in huge support of his music and style. Much like a proto-Drake, LL Cool J through this album was able to deliver enough to keep the streets happy all while maintaining the attention of his female fan base.

When Was Hip Hop Created?

Hip Hop emerged in the late 1970s in the South Bronx, a borough of New York City. This vibrant, multifaceted cultural movement came to life in response to social and economic conditions that marginalized inner-city African American and Latino youths. Its innovative music, dance, visual art, and style marked the movement.

The Founding Father Of Hip Hop

Regarded as the founding father of Hip Hop, DJ Kool Herc is widely credited for kickstarting hip hop. Born in Jamaica and raised in the Bronx, Herc brought the sound system culture of his homeland to New York City. On August 11, 1973, he held a party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. This event is what many consider to be the birth of Hip Hop.

Early Pioneers & The Start Date Of Hip Hop

DJ Kool Herc was not alone in shaping the early Hip Hop landscape. Afrika Bambaataa, another influential figure, contributed to the movement by organizing block parties and fostering community among young people. Grandmaster Flash, a pioneering DJ, is credited with developing innovative DJing techniques such as scratching and beat juggling. These pioneers laid the groundwork for the Hip Hop movement in the 1970s. They crafted its core elements and spreading its influence throughout the Bronx.

The Evolution

The late 1970s and early 1980s marked a period of rapid expansion and evolution for Hip Hop. The genre began to reach a wider audience, moving beyond the boundaries of the Bronx and infiltrating mainstream American culture. Artists like Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, and the Beastie Boys brought Hip Hop music to the charts while breakdancing crews and graffiti artists showcased the visual and dance aspects of the culture. By the mid-’80s, Hip Hop was a nationwide phenomenon.

The genre’s global reach is a testament to its power as a form of expression and communication. Despite its roots in the South Bronx, the movement resonates with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, highlighting universal struggle, resilience, and creativity themes.

Conclusion/TLDR

The Hip Hop start date in the 1970s marked the beginning of a cultural revolution that continues to reverberate worldwide. From its roots in the South Bronx, the sound has grown into a global phenomenon, influencing music, dance, visual art, fashion, and more. The power of Hip Hop lies in its ability to give voice to marginalized communities, challenge societal norms, and foster creativity and expression. As we look to the future, it’s clear that the impact of the culture’s start date will continue to be felt for generations to come.

LL Cool J Taps Eminem, Nas & More For Upcoming Album: Report

After nearly 40 years in the entertainment industry, expanding into film and television following a triumphant run in hip-hop, LL Cool J plans to make his return to the booth. The legendary rapper confirmed that he’ll release a new album – his first in 10 years. However, he’s bringing along a slew of MCs to join him on the project. AllHipHop reports that Eminem, Nas, Fat Joe, Rick Ross, and Saweetie will appear in the project, which is reportedly going to be produced entirely by Q-Tip.

The upcoming project aligns with Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary and the string of features reflects the genre’s evolution. Fat Joe stands as the only artist that LL Cool J worked with in the past. The two previously connected on “I Shot Ya (Remix)” in 1995. However, the appearances of Nas and Eminem are certainly the most anticipated, especially since LL hasn’t locked in with either in the past. Although a collab with Em was supposed to arrive on LL’s now-shelved The G.O.A.T 2, LL continued to ensure fans that they would come out with something in the near future.

News. “I think it’s something modern without chasing. It’s a whole new thing. I can’t wait for the people to see it… I think honestly and sincerely that Q-Tip as a producer is unbelievable and what he did on this record for me, I think is amazing. So the world will decide.”

It seems like the upcoming album will align with LL Cool J’s upcoming The F.O.R.C.E tour. The tour kicks off on June 25th in Boston and will include The Roots, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and DJ Z-Trip. Additionally, they plan on turning it into a hip-hop extravaganza in each city as they plot on different guests, including Rakim, Queen Latifah, Rick Ross, Jadakiss, and more. We’ll keep you posted on anymore updates surrounding LL’s upcoming album.

LL Cool J Speaks On The Benefits Of Owning His Masters

Music is a weird industry. Just because you create a song doesn’t mean that you actually own it. In fact, you could be the best-selling artist to ever live and yet only see a fraction of the profits your work generates.

That’s where masters come in. The most person who owns the “masters” of a song is technically the legal owner of that song. They are the ones who can choose how it is used. Furthermore, they can also choose how the artist is compensated in terms of residuals. Famously, Taylor Swift re-recorded an entire album to claim ownership of it after she was unable to buy her own masters. Throughout history, artists have long battled to control their own music. Furthermore, there are countless examples of this being exploited by the owners of an artist’s masters.

LL Cool J Testifies On Owning His Own Masters

“Yeah, I own my masters,” Cool J told the Million Dollarz Worth of Game podcast, “I got my catalog back just before 2000. And, you know, it just worked out well. So now, if you hear an LL COOL J song in a movie, or if you hear my song in a commercial, I’ve licensed that song.” LL Cool J’s work can be heard just about everywhere in popular culture. However, it’s not just about the money for Cool J, it’s about the principle of making music.

“But that’s a blessing, you know? There but for the grace of God, you know what I’m saying? It just worked out. I got a lot of bites at the apple. And I was born to do what I’m doing. I’m not a dude that’s just doing Hip Hop because I’m doing it. You know? I was born to do it,” Cool J said. While the money is likely very nice from a catalog as prolific as Cool J’s, his words resonate as to why he owns his own work. It’s blood, sweat, and tears on those tracks. While he isn’t in the game to make money, if there is money to be made, he deserves to be the one to make it.
