Lil Nas X Says His Relationship With BET Was ‘Painful And Strained’ Even Before The 2022 BET Awards
The 2022 BET Awards have come and gone and aside from a t-shirt worn by Jack Harlow, Lil Nas X was not present. This whole saga has bothered Lil Nas X, of course, but now he has said his “painful and strained” relationship with BET actually started before he didn’t receive any award nominations from them this year.
In a statement, the rapper told Rolling Stone, “My relationship with BET has been painful and strained for quite some time. It didn’t start with this year’s nominations like most people might think. They did let me perform on their show last year, but only after [I gave] assurances that I was not a satanist or devil worshiper, and that my performance would be appropriate for their audience.”
In response, a BET spokesperson said the “summation of events around Lil Nas X’s 2021 BET Awards performance is simply untrue” and added, “Since last year’s performance, we have been in touch to work on other projects. We are still excited about his previous performances and continue to wish him well. But today, we are focused on culture’s biggest night and delivering history-making moments for fans worldwide.”
That said, an anonymous member of Nas’ team told Rolling Stone of the immediate response to Nas’ 2021 BET Awards performance (the one where he kissed one of his dancers, by the way), “At some point after [Nas] got offstage, one of the BET producers came up to me and before I could even open my mouth, he looked at me and said, ‘That was really f*cked up.’”
Nas added, “They say that ‘no one cheered louder’ for me than them that night, but the BET Awards team was actually very upset that I kissed my dancer onstage and vocalized their discontent with multiple members of my team immediately following the performance.”

Jack Harlow Makes His Support For Lil Nas X Clear During His Red Carpet Appearance At The 2022 BET Awards
Aside from conversation about possible winners and what the performances might look like, tonight’s 2022 BET Awards has been the topic of conversation due to Lil Nas X’s frustration with them. The singer was not nominated for this year’s award show despite being one of the biggest artists of the last 12 months. Fans also took issue with this as they noted that Jack Harlow was nominated as one of his biggest contributions in the last 12 months was a guest verse on Lil Nas’ chart-topping “Industry Baby.” Harlow has shown support for Lil Nas on numerous occasions, and the latest came during his red carpet appearance for tonight’s BET Awards.

Harlow showed up on the red carpet at the 2022 BET Awards rocking a Lil Nas graphic t-shirt. It featured multiple pictures of the singer, the background of his 2021 album, and the word “Montero” which is Lil Nas’ first name and the title of his debut album. Lil Nas eventually caught wind of Harlow’s red carpet appearance and shared some love back with him, writing in a tweet, “Wow I really love this man.”
The BET Awards red carpet moment comes after Lil Nas X released “Late To Da Party” with YoungBoy Never Broke Again, a record that finds Lil Nas saying “f*ck BET” multiple times.

Lil Nas X Trolls His Own Songwriting Award With A Cheeky Reference To His New Song
Lil Nas X was recently honored by the Songwriters Hall Of Fame with the Hal David Starlight Award, which recognized the significant impact he’s made on the music industry in his relatively short time in the spotlight. However, it doesn’t look like he’s letting that success go to his head. He’s still got the same absurdist sense of humor he came into the music business with, as illustrated by his low-key reaction to the recognition on social media.
Tweeting a screenshot of a Variety tweet reporting on the Songwriters Hall Of Fame honor, Nas accompanied the image with another screenshot taken from the lyrics scroll of his new song, “Late To Da Party” with YoungBoy Never Broke Again, from Apple Music. The lyric in question reads: “Farted on these n****s [fart noise] / Oops, I think I sh*tted,” undercutting the austerity of receiving an award for songwriting with an example of just how silly his songwriting can be. It’s Nas showing that he doesn’t take himself too seriously — a trait that will probably help him remain grounded in an industry that can quickly make artists lose touch.

However, he also seems to appreciate his position in the business. During his speech at the Songwriters Hall Of Fame 51st Annual Induction And Awards Gala in New York earlier this month, he said, “This award means a lot to me for the simple fact that, somehow, I keep just doing things and it keeps working out. I don’t know why the universe is letting me have these moments, but thank the universe.”
Lil Nas X Teams with Youngboy Never Broke Again for New Single “Late To Da Party”
It’s a blend of two different worlds as Lil Nas X and Youngboy Never Broke Again collaborate for the new single “Late To Da Party.”
The new single was created with Younboy currently on house arrest, leading to Lil Nas creatively getting off his meme and trolling mastery, with a blend of video editing to create the official video for the single.
“Late To Da Party” is the first single from Lil Nas X since his debut album Montero. The cover art features someone urinating on a BET Award, following a back and forth with the awards show on Twitter.
Lil Nas X will go on his headlining tour this summer. Until then you can tap into the new single below.

Lil Nas X And NBA Youngboy Are Not Upset About Those ‘Late To Da Party’ On Their Lively New Single
Lil Nas X and Youngboy Never Broke Again are in full troll mode on their latest single, and first collaboration, “Late To Da Party.” The song opens with the “Panini” artist repeating “F*ck BET” emphatically before making allusions to sex and allowing NBA Youngboy to join the fun. It’s the pop-rap hybrid one can expect from Nas at this point, but a refreshing pairing with the “Need It” artist for sure.
Lil Nas X made headlines recently for his now-deleted tweets taking aim at BET for not nominating him for a single award ahead of the upcoming 2022 BET Awards. He then doubled down by posting a clip lip-syncing the aforementioned “F*ck BET” he says on “Late To Da Party.” The “Old Town Road” artist took issue with the fact he could not be recognized by his own people despite the hardships that Black LGBTQIA+ people have to face. In a second clip, he played the “Nevada” artist’s portion of the song.
Though he was taken aback by BET overlooking him, the two-time Grammy winner is riding a huge wave of momentum. 2021’s Montero was a major success, backed by the chart-topping, Grammy-nominated “Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow. Youngboy, a known frequent releaser, is already two projects in at just over the half-year mark. All in all, they can’t complain.

Lil Nas X Made A Fake BET Awards Commercial To Hilariously Promote His Upcoming Single
Lil Nas X has made it clear in recent weeks that he has beef with the BET Awards. At the top of June, Nas commented about how he received “an outstanding zero nominations again” for the 2022 ceremony, adding, “black excellence!” He later went on to use the snub as a launching point to discuss “the bigger problem of homophobia in the black community.”
That was a couple weeks ago now but Nas hasn’t forgotten about the BET Awards, as he proves with his latest hilarious promo for his upcoming single, “Late To The Party.”
Last night, Nas shared a video that’s presented like a traditional sort of television commercial spot for the BET Awards broadcast. The differences are easy to spot once you get past the glossy veneer, though, like how all the B-roll is of Nas, Nas can be heard saying “F*ck BET” repeatedly in the background, and how the date and time of the awards show shown here is actually when Nas is releasing “Late To The Party” (this Friday at midnight ET). The ad is so well-executed that if it actually aired on TV, a viewer who wasn’t paying close attention probably wouldn’t suspect anything about it was unusual.

On top of that, Nas shared the art for the new single and it features a license plate, front and center in the image, that reads, “F*CK BET.”
