SZA Set To Receive A Special Award From The Songwriters Hall Of Fame

SZA had about as impressive of a 2023 as anybody. Following the release of SOS in late 2022, she took a year-long victory lap marked by some of the biggest hits of her career so far. It began with “Kill Bill” which hovered in the top 5 of the Hot 100 for months following the album’s release and eventually hit #1 when Doja Cat teamed up for a remix. As soon as the momentum from that song slowed down, “Snooze” took over and became her biggest chart hit ever. The track is still on the charts and next week will be its stunning 70th week on the Hot 100.

Now SZA is receiving yet another honor in the wake of her massive year. It was announced today that she’ll be this year’s recipient of the Hal David Starlight Award. She’ll be given the award at the Songwriters Hall Of Fame Awards on June 13 in New York City. According to Billboard, the announcement describes the award as an honor presented to “gifted young songwriters who are making a significant impact in the music industry with their original songs.” The “Snooze” singer is just the second black woman to win the award following Alicia Keys being honored nearly two decades ago. Check out the announcement of her award below.

SZA Getting Special Songwriters Award

Late last year, SZA announced that she had a deluxe edition of SOS coming soon. The special new deluxe album was called LANA and fans were expecting it sooner rather than later. When she dropped the single “Saturn” back in February fans assumed that the full album would be dropping soon, but that hasn’t been the case. A big reason was revealed to fans last month.

The R&B darling went on a public rant against the person who leaked LANA and revealed that she’s writing and recording an entire new deluxe album instead of officially releasing the leaked songs. What do you think of SZA being honored at this year’s Songwriters Hall Of Fame Awards? Are you looking forward to SZA eventually releasing her SOS deluxe version LANA? Timbaland Announced as Inductee in Songwriters Hall of Fame

Timbaland is headed to the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame has announced its latest inductees for the 2024 Induction and Awards Gala, honoring musical luminaries who have left an indelible mark on the industry. The esteemed list also includes Hillary Lindsey, Dean Pitchford, R.E.M. (Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe), and Steely Dan (Donald Fagen and Walter Becker).

These legendary songwriters boast an impressive catalog of hits, such as “Jesus Take The Wheel,” “Big Pimpin’,” “Footloose,” “Losing My Religion,” and “Reelin’ in the Years.” The star-studded gala is scheduled for Thursday, June 13th, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Stay tuned for announcements on additional special award honorees.

“I’ve said it before, but the music industry does not exist without songwriters delivering great songs first. Without them there is no recorded music, no concert business, no merch . . . nothing, it all starts with the song and the songwriter,” said SHOF Chairman Nile Rodgers. “We are therefore very proud that we are continually recognizing some of the culturally most important songwriters of all time and that the 2024 slate represents not just iconic songs but also diversity and unity across genres, ethnicity and gender, songwriters who have enriched our lives and literally enriched music and the lives of billions of listeners all over the world.”

Founded in 1969, the Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) plays a crucial role as a connecting link between the rich history and promising future of music. Within its hallowed halls, musical trailblazers are immortalized and honored, and the organization’s active engagement with the music community nurtures the emergence of the next generation of troubadours. Eligibility for induction is based on a songwriter’s substantial catalog of songs, making them eligible for consideration 20 years after the initial commercial release of a song.

JAY-Z Speaks On Being First Rapper In Songwriter Hall Of Fame

During his recent interview with Gayle King, JAY-Z reflected on both the positive and negative aspects of being the first rapper to be enshrined in the Songwriter Hall of Fame. “For a while, they would just dismiss rap as this fad or this noise [with] people just screaming over beats. Not that we needed the validation, but it was like we want the validation ’cause we deserve it,” he explained. Hov was elected to the Hall back in 2017. He has since been joined by Jermaine Dupri (2018), Missy Elliot (2019), Pharrell (2022), and Snoop (2023).

However, the Hall of Fame wasn’t the only thing that he and King talked about. Jigga also recalled how Chris Martin of Coldplay convinced him to headline Glastonbury in 2018. “At one point, I was like why am I going there. If they don’t want me there, I don’t want to go. And Chris from Coldplay was instrumental on [convincing me to play]. He was like, ‘Jay, they love you. It’s just the old guard, they don’t know. It’s always been a rock festival.’ They didn’t have anything against me personally, it was just like, this is a rock festival, this is what it is. The world was changing,” he recalled. JAY-Z’s inclusion in the 2018 lineup garnered a lot of backlash from the more traditional Glastonbury crowd of rock musicians. In one notable example, Hov learned to play Oasis’ “Wonderwall” on the guitar and played it for the crowd after Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher was especially vocal in his opposition.

JAY-Z Surprises Fans With His Pick For His Most Important Album

Hov has been doing a lot of interviews recently, which has led to a lot of surprising revelations. For example, JAY-Z recently revealed that he believes his most important to album to be Vol 2…Hard Knock Life. “This is the album that’s the most important album because it was the album where I honed my craft as a songwriter and that balance of creating exactly what I want. And just as a writer, a technical song-maker. Song-making skills with real stories is when it all came together on this album,” he explained.

Elsewhere, he also explained what it would take for him to make new music. “I’ll say I wanna make music, but it has to be something important. I don’t wanna just make a bunch of tunes. That’s not gonna serve me. It won’t feed me, first of all. I have to be saying something important. It has to mean something, you know? It has to mean something to a larger society,” he explained.

Post Malone Played ‘A Song That Nobody Knows’ (And Was Sorry About That) After Accepting A Songwriters Hall Of Fame Award

Last year, Lil Nas X accepted the Hal David Starlight Award at The Songwriters Hall Of Fame. “This award means a lot to me for the simple fact that, somehow, I keep just doing things and it keeps working out,” he said in his acceptance speech.

It was revealed in May that this year’s award would go to Post Malone. It honors “gifted young songwriters who are making a significant impact in the music industry with their original songs,” and the 27-year-old is undoubtedly one of the biggest hitmakers of this generation. He accepted the award at the ceremony last night (June 15) at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City, and thanked his fiancée and their baby.

Along with his speech, he also gave an acoustic performance of his 2016 song “Feeling Whitney” from his debut Stoney. “I’m sorry that I played a song that nobody knows,” he joked (as Stereogum notes).

The “Circles” performer is set to hit the road soon on the If Y’all Weren’t Here I’d Be Crying tour. It kicks off in the beginning of July, a few weeks before the release of his highly anticipated new album Austin.

Austin is out 7/28 via Mercury Records/Republic Records. Find more information here.

Snoop Dogg Pulls Out Of Songwriters Hall Of Fame Ceremony, Cites “Personal Reasons”

Just a few days before the dinner celebrating this year’s inductees to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, one honoree has pulled out. Snoop Dogg surprised fans when he announced he was backing out of the honor for personal reasons. According to Billboard, Snoop Dogg has deferred his induction and currently plans to join the hall next year. While it’s unclear specifically what causes Snoop to make this decision, he isn’t the first to take this route. Sade also deferred her induction to a future class, also expected to be in 2024.

The other five songwriters set to be honored appear to still be on board for the ceremony a few days from now. Post Malone is also set to be honored by the hall with the Hal David Starlight Award. The award “was established to honor gifted songwriters who are at an apex in their careers and are making a significant impact in the music industry via their original songs.”  The Hall Of Fame seeks to honor those who craft notable songs and has approximately 400 members.

The news comes right after Snoop Dogg received another disappointment. After months of trying to become the first black owner of an NHL team Snoop ultimately missed his chance. Toronto billionaire Michael Andlauer has bought the Ottawa Senators for $1 billion. The news comes after Snoop had already teased at becoming the team’s new owner with an Instagram post sporting custom sweatpants with the Senators logo.

Snoop also showed off another custom piece a few days ago. In a video posted to his Instagram, he flexed a huge new chain that pays tribute to east coast rap legends Wu-Tang Clan. The video featured one of the group’s songs playing over it while Snoop showed off his new drip. What do you think about Snoop Dogg and Sade deferring their Songwriters Hall of Fame induction until 2024? Let us know in the comment section below.
