The hip-hop world received a shock today when Las Vegas police announced that they arrested Duane “Keefe D” Davis, now a prime suspect in the murder of Tupac Shakur 27 years ago. Moreover, that case is among hip-hop’s most debated events, and continues to be a contentious one in no small part thanks to Keefe’s claims. As one of the last living witnesses to the crime, his remarks and statements on it generated much conversation and controversy. Now that authorities charged him with murder of a deadly weapon, though, it seems like all this speculation might see an official conclusion in the eyes of the law.
Furthermore, Nevada officials released Keefe D’s mugshot into the world, and many are reacting to it and this news with shock and skepticism. After all, it’s been so long and such a burnt-out conversation that it feels surreal that Tupac Shakur’s murder might finally see a resolution. “For 27 years the family of Tupac Shakur has been waiting for justice,” stated Sheriff Kevin McMahill, according to reporter Meghann Cuniff. “While I know there’s been many people who did not believe that the murder of Tupac Shakur was important to this police department, I am here to tell you that that was simply not the case.”
In addition, the Las Vegas Police Department believes that Keefe D “orchestrated” the attack, which lines up with his previous testimony that he gave nephew Orlando Anderson to shoot the West Coast rap legend. According to the LVPD, Davis was the “shot-caller” of a large group with intentions to harm ‘Pac. Not only that, but they also relayed suspicion that Davis received the weapon in question from a “close associate” that they would reveal in due time. Also, authorities charged Keefe with intent to promote, further, or assist a criminal organization.
Meanwhile, this ties into Vegas PD’s explanation as to why they charged the 60-year-old even if he didn’t pull the trigger. Given state law in Nevada, officials can charge him with aiding or abetting, as these charges can still apply to criminals who don’t directly commit a crime. Surely in the next few days and weeks, we will learn more of this developing and long-running case. On that note, keep checking in with HNHH for more news and the latest updates on Keefe D and Tupac Shakur.
Today, news broke that Las Vegas police had finally made an arrest in the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur. Authorities arrested Duane “Keefe D” Davis, an admitted witness. He was charged with murder with a deadly weapon for the Vegas drive-by. The 60-year-old has spoken about the shooting quite a bit in the past. He’s claimed to have given his nephew the gun used to shoot 2Pac, witnessed the shooting himself, and more.
At a recent press conference, Las Vegas police shared more pressing updates on the current situation. According to them, authorities believe that Keefe D “orchestrated” the plan to murder the beloved performer. They called him the “shot-caller” of a “group of individuals” who followed through with the crime. Authorities allege that Davis obtained the murder weapon from a “close associate.” They also noted that more information on who that could be will come out over time.
They also clarified why Keefe D is charged with murder while he’s not the individual believed to have pulled the trigger on 2Pac. One official explained that in Nevada, along with most states, one can be charged with a crime even if they didn’t commit it directly, for aiding or abetting. Keefe D was also charged with intent to promote, further, or assist a criminal gang.
“For 27 years the family of Tupac Shakur has been waiting for justice,” Sheriff Kevin McMahill also explained at a press conference today. “While I know there’s been many people who did not believe that the murder of Tupac Shakur was important to this police department, I’m here to tell you that is simply not the case.” What do you think of police arresting Keefe D and charging him with murder with a deadly weapon? Las Vegas police have arrested Duane “Keffe D” Davis in connection to the 1996 drive-by murder that led to Tupac Shakur’s death.
Keffe D was arrested early Friday morning, but the charges aren’t currently known, according to ABC7. In the past, Keffe D stated he was in the car that carried out the drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.
Appearing on various forms of media, Keffe D stated his nephew Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson was one of the men in the back of the Cadillac where the shots were fired. Earlier in the night, Anderson and Tupac were involved in a brawl. Anderson was killed in a separate shooting in Compton but denied involvement in the shooting of Tupac.
In July, Las Vegas Metro Police issued a search warrant on the home of Paula Clemons, the wife of Keefe D, revealing that bullets found at the residence could be connected to Tupac’s murder.
LVMPD stated in a warrant that several .40 caliber bullets were retrieved from the home of the 60-year-old Duane Keith Davis, aka Keefe D, and forensics experts would test the bullets to see if they are linked to the shooting death of Tupac Shakur. A Vegas police source says that the bullets will be tested with a “definite consideration on whether they have any link to the bullets found in Tupac’s body.” Those results have not yet been made public
Homicide detectives in Las Vegas have kept the forensic evidence from the Shakur murder, including bullets and clothing, in secure storage for 26 years, with full laboratory analysis of shells, bullets, and gunpowder from the murder scene.
According to the police source, “Microfibers or residues from the weapon or the bullet could prove to be a link. There is no information yet on the history of the bullets, how old they are or their significance. And it will take some time to assess how the bullets play a role in this case. The homicide detectives leading the case are keeping everything as secretive as possible with only the district attorney’s office learning about developments. No pun intended, it is a long shot that the bullets will be the ones from 1996.”
The source added, “This search warrant was pushed because investigators feel they can assemble enough information that could lead to an arrest or indictment. Tupac’s murder remains open, so the onus remains on the police to try to attempt to close the case.”
The .40 Glock that was used in the Tupac murder was never recovered. However, Keefe D has openly admitted on several occasions that he handed the gun to his nephew Orlando Anderson that he used to shoot Tupac on September 7, 1996.
Officer Chris Carroll, one of the first responders to the scene where Pac was shot in 1996, sat with The Art of Dialogue and delivered more information about Keefe’s connection.
After reiterating that Keefe D has long said he had a role in the murder, Carroll revealed he may also have been selling items connected to the crime.
“I’ve heard rumors that he even had sold some items that he told people were there that night,” Carroll said. “Whether that’s BS or not, I don’t know, but to think that not only is he admitting to being part of a murder but now he’s going to profit from the whole deal?”
When reports surfaced that Keefe D was being looked at as the main suspect in Tupac’s unsolved murder, it became huge news. Since 1996, there has been plenty of speculation over who took the rap superstar’s life, but no arrests. After authorities announced Keefe D was facing imminent charges, there was buzz the case would finally come to an end.
Sixty-year-old Keefe D has deep ties to the late rap legend Eazy-E and the South Side Compton Crips. Everybody wanted to know more about the man. Who is he? What is his connection to Tupac? Here’s a deeper look into Keefe D and his relation to the Tupac murder investigation.
Keefe D said he first met Diddy in 1991 when Puff was working on an Usher video. Keefe let them use some of his cars for the shoot, with Usher damaging one when dancing on it. Diddy covered the cost, which seemed like a friendly gesture at the time. However, Keefe would see that things aren’t always what they seem.
The Murder Of Tupac
On September 7, 1997, Tupac was in Las Vegas with Suge Knight and some of his Death Row associates. One of the guys pointed out Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, a Southside Compton Crip, and accused Anderson of trying to rob him. Orlando just happened to be the nephew of Keefe D. As the story goes, Tupac ran up on Orlando, and a whole melee ensued.
Hours later, Suge drove to another spot with Tupac as his passenger. Before they could arrive, a car pulled up next to them and opened fire. Tupac was hit four times and ended up dying six days later on September 13. The hip-hop world was left shocked and in mourning. Everybody wondered who could have killed the rap legend.
The Keefe D Connection
Plenty of conspiracies spun the block as the streets began talking and the investigation heated up. Orlando and Keefe D’s names were soon brought into the mix, with many pointing fingers at Orlando as the shooter. He continuously denied his involvement. Even after Orlando died in a gang-related shootout in 1998, numerous documentaries, witnesses, and police investigations have named Orlando as the main suspect. Since Orlando was gone, the focus often turned to Keefe. Multiple times, he put himself in that position.
The Keefe D Admission
In a 2018 interview, Keefe admitted he was in the backseat of the car when Tupac was shot. He boasted he was the one who handed the gun to the shooter. While he wouldn’t name the shooter, he acknowledged he was “the only one alive” who knew what happened that night. Keefe claimed he was speaking out because he had cancer and wanted the truth to be told.
Eventually, according to The Daily Mail, Keefe D named Orlando as the shooter “during a taped conversation under immunity.” He said he first tried to give the gun to another guy in the car, Dre Smith. After Dre refused, Keefe gave it to Orlando, who “popped the dudes.” Further, around this time, there were reports that an arrest was “imminent,” but that didn’t happen. The authorities said they were still investigating Tupac’s death, which remained an open case. The whodunit continued.
New Keefe D Investigation
In 2023, everything changed. Reggie Wright Jr., the former head of security at Death Row Records, predicted there would be some movement in the case. He told Bomb1st, “Let’s put it this way, I bet Keefe D [has] been having the runs for the last two weeks.” He added, “Because yeah, they are knocking on doors and there’s some activity.” Keefe said it wasn’t true and claimed, “This dude obsessed with me … He need to leave me the f*ck alone.”
Reggie ended up being right. On July 17, 2023, the police executed a search on a Henderson, Nevada property connected to Keefe. They looked for any evidence connected to Tupac’s murder. According to police, they found several bullets that would undergo forensic testing to match those found in Tupac’s body and on the scene. Police also gathered photos, computers, and more.
The home turned out to be that of Keefe D’s ex-wife. He admitted that murder-related evidence was located at the residence. While authorities collected various items, they said they would present the evidence to a grand jury. They warned it could take months before the jury came back with a decision.
Diddy-Keefe D Connection
Shortly afterward, Keefe explained that his connection to Diddy landed him in the investigation’s crosshairs. Keefe said he regretted ever meeting Diddy. “If I wouldn’t have ever met him, I wouldn’t have ever been involved in this bullsh*t. I would’ve never met the brother.” He also accused Diddy of playing him and Suge. He said, “Because he pitted us against each other, which was kinda smart. We’re Crips and Suge was Bloods.”
Pressing Forward
The bullets police collected from Keefe D’s residence didn’t match the ones found at Tupac’s murder scene. However, that didn’t mean he was off the hook. Authorities said some evidence showed “individuals who might have been connected to people directly or indirectly involved in the drive-by shooting.”
Sources told The Daily Mail that prosecutors expected “this matter to become a criminal case imminently.” Detectives said, “Keefe has gloated so much about this that he has effectively talked himself into huge legal trouble.” Some of the biggest evidence against him was truly his own words.
Many are hopeful that Keefe D will go to trial to put to rest one of the most intriguing unsolved mysteries in modern history. Reports have surfaced that Suge Knight might testify if he goes to trial. Although there have been so many twists and turns in this 27-year case, there is hope it could end. The grand jury is expected to come back with a decision by the end of September.
According to sources who spoke with The Daily Mirror, prosecutors are ready to present the case to bring Duane “Keefe D” Davis to a Las Vegas grand jury. Keefe D has long claimed that he is a material witness to the murder of 2Pac. Furthermore, he has gone as far as to say that he handed the gun to his nephew Orlando Anderson before Anderson reportedly killed 2Pac in September 1996. “We expect this matter to become a criminal case imminently. Keefe has gloated so much about this that he has effectively talked himself into huge legal trouble,” detectives on the case reportedly told the British newspaper.
This comes after a grand jury was convened last month. Meanwhile, law enforcement in Las Vegas executed several raids on properties connected to Keefe D. The primary raid was on the home of Keefe D’s ex-wife, where bullets were among the evidence taken into custody. However, last week it was revealed that the bullets recovered did not match samples recovered from the 1996 crime scene.
The case is currently in the hands of a grand jury. A grand jury is a precursor to a jury trial. Prosecutors present a version of their case to the grand jury before it ever sees a courtroom. This is in order to establish whether a crime warranting a trial was committed. The grand jury then considers the evidence and rules on whether the case should go to trial. If you ever hear that charges were dropped due to a “lack of sufficient evidence”, it’s like that prosecutors failed to convince a grand jury that a trial was warranted based on the evidence they had.
In the case of Keefe D, it is likely that the primary evidence is the testimony of Keefe D himself. Almost since the day of 2Pac’s death, Keefe D has told anyone who will listen that he knows who killed 2Pac. Additionally, he has repeatedly claimed that he himself was involved in the murder. This culminated with Keefe D being the star testimonial in the A&E documentary, Who Killed Tupac Shakur? As mentioned in the Mirror report, prosecutors believe that Keefe D has essentially talked himself into a criminal trial. However, it remains to be seen what the grand jury thinks of the evidence. It’s believed that the grand jury will make a decision before the end of September.
The murder case of Tupac Shakur has been a mystery for decades at this point, and is currently being revisited in court. Moreover, it relates to suspect Duane Keith “Keefe D” Davis, a member of the South Side Compton Crips. Recently, ABC News revealed body cam footage from the police search that SWAT officials carried out in Nevada at Keefe D’s home with a search warrant. Furthermore, they gathered many items, including his stash of bullets in his house. According to these reports, this ammunition does not match the shell casings that the original crime scene held.
Of course, the immediate reaction to this is that Keefe D is actually innocent in the legendary rapper’s murder. However, neither news reports nor police authorities themselves commented on this or have provided confirmation on the implications of this discovery. Still, officials maintained that, no matter what these discoveries imply, Keefe is an important witness in the case. Not only that, they suggested that he knows what truly happened the night of Tupac’s death. Given how long it’s been since then, it’s still unclear what else the court could discover in this case.
“Items retrieved from the home included computers, hard drives and pictures from the 1990s,” an official from the case told the news outlet. “[They] apparently show individuals who might have been connected to people directly or indirectly involved in the drive-by shooting.” Previously, Keefe D stated that he sat next to ‘Pac’s alleged killer, Keefe’s nephew Orlando Anderson. Unfortunately, Anderson passed away due to a gang shooting in 1998 separate from this case. This makes Keefe the only living witness to the crime besides Suge Knight, who could testify in this case.
Meanwhile, Knight previously refused to cooperate with authorities on this, though a subpoena might change things. In addition, a police official expressed in reports that it could take months for a Vegas grand jury to determine indictment based on evidence from Keefe D’s home. As such, it will likely be some time before this case significantly moves forward- if at all. On that note, stick around on HNHH for the latest news and updates on the current Tupac Shakur murder case.
Suge Knight could be called as a witness for the prosecution if Duane “Keefe D” Davis is put on trial for his role in the death of Tupac Shakur. Knight was sitting beside 2Pac when an unknown assailant killed the rapper in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996. Knight sustained minor injuries in the attack, with 2Pac dying six days later after being shot four times.
The case, which is a favorite among true crime buffs, has soared back into the public interest after law enforcement conducted a series of raids last month. Keefe D is the uncle of Orlando Anderson, a gang member believed to have been the gunman that killed 2Pac. 2Pac had had a physical altercation with Anderson earlier in the night. Meanwhile, Keefe D has claimed for several years that he handed Anderson the gun that was used to kill 2Pac. While Anderson was killed in a gang shooting in 1998, Keefe D’s self-professed involvement could see him in a courtroom in the near future.
Strength Of Evidence Will Determine If Keefe D Trial Happens
The primary raid was conducted on the home of Keefe D’s ex-wife. Keefe D had claimed that evidence relating to the murder could be found there. Bullets, magazines, and other paraphernalia were recovered during the raid. That evidence has since been presented to a grand jury. However, police have warned that it could take months for the grand jury to reach a decision on an indictment.
Meanwhile, Keefe D has blamed Diddy of all people for inciting 2Pac’s murder. “If I wouldn’t have ever met him, I wouldn’t have ever been involved in this bullshit,” he stated. “I would’ve never met the brother. I never would’ve been involved in this bullshit. Me and Suge, we played on the same pop warner team and everything. My home boys helped put Suge in the game. It really crashed two people’s empire in one night. Mine’s for sure — Suge’s too. [Diddy] the only one still balling. He made our shit go down, man… He won’t even look out or nothing. Because he pitted us against each other, which was kinda smart. We’re Crips and Suge was Bloods.”
During a recent appearance on The Art of Dialogue, Keefe D shared his thoughts on Boosie Badazz’ online antics. The former Crip, and also the uncle of 2Pac’s alleged killer, claims that if Boosie doesn’t stop weighing in on other people’s business, he could get get himself “hurt.” Boosie’s known to be outspoken on social media, always commenting on or engaging in beef. According to Keefe D, however, he might want to lay off.
“I only gotta say to Boosie: Get you some business, mind your business, and stay out of everybody else’s and you’ll live longer dude,” he explained. “Who stamped you to make you the f*cking spokesman for gangster-ism? You a little b*tch. And stop letting that dude put you in spots like that, dude. Gon’ get yourself hurt.” Keefe D then went on, “You talk about Gangsta Williams, you talk about Gunna, you talk about everybody. Stay out of people’s business, dude. Mind yours and you’ll live longer. Yeah.” “And you always got something f*cking to say,” he also adds. “Who stamped your a**? That’s all I got to say Mr. Boo. Wish you luck on your case brother. And if you don’t get five years, you snitching. That’s all I got to say.”
Keefe D Tells Boosie Badazz To “Stay Out Of People’s Business, Dude”
Recently, Keefe D’s also been making headlines after his residence was searched by police in connection to 2Pac’s murder. His nephew Orlando Anderson is widely believe to have been behind 2Pac’s murder, though he was never charged. According to reports, police recovered some bullets at Keefe D’s home, which they took for further testing. Though it’s a long shot that the bullets are related to 2Pac’s death, investigators are holding out hope that evidence recovered from Keefe D’s house “could lead to an arrest or indictment.”
As for Boosie, the father of eight recently revealed that he’s on a new journey of self-improvement. Earlier this week, he shared that he’s signed himself up for anger management classes. Fans are glad that Boosie’s taking steps towards his wellbeing.
Keefe D continues to be brought up as results continue to pour out from the search of a Las Vegas home in connection to the murder of Tupac. Officer Chris Carroll, one of the first responders to the scene where Pac was shot in 1996, sat with The Art of Dialogue and delivered more information about Keefe’s connection.
