Juvenile Says ‘Back That Azz Up’ Is A Big Hit At Weddings On ‘Fresh Pair’

Uproxx’s Fresh Pair is back with a new season, a new studio, and the same unique insight into the world of hip-hop and sneakers provided by hosts Just Blaze and Katty Customs. This week, they present New Orleans legend Juvenile with a pair of custom Reeboks he prices at $70,000 while reminiscing on the dominance of Cash Money Records in the ’99 and the 2000 — including how big of a hit “Back That Azz Up” has become on the wedding DJ circuit.

After revealing the kicks, Juvie details his experiences with Cash Money building New Orleans’ rap scene almost from scratch, recalls the importance of Soulja Slim to both that scene and Juvie’s own career (he did write “Slow Motion,” after all), and reveals his favorite Cash Money records. Just, Katty, and Juvenile also highlight the creative mayhem and impact of the label’s album cover art, which was notoriously meticulously (and sometimes ridiculously) crafted by in-house designers Pen And Pixel.

Juvenile ranks his albums toward the end of the discussion, after sharing his thoughts on the viral popularity of his NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert. Finally, he shares his advice to creatives, which you don’t want to miss, even if you don’t think that includes you.

Lil Wayne Says The Super Bowl Halftime Show Was ‘Ripped Away’ From Him, Ahead Of The Hot Boys Reunion

Like many hip-hop heads, Lil Wayne felt confident out his bid for the 2025 Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime show slot to Kendrick Lamar. However, home field advantage didn’t serve the “Bless” rapper any good in this instance. Yesterday (November 2), when he returned to New Orleans for Lil Weezyana Fest 2024 he was sure to air out his grievances.

In between songs, Lil Wayne addressed the matter with a passionate speech (viewable here). “When the first Super Bowl was here I made sure I bought tickets at the beginning of the season,” he said. “I did the same when I moved to Miami, and I was wishing my team made it again. I was able to give my momma that suite. She was able to bring my family and other people from New Orleans, and they had a f*cking ball.”

He continued: “That moment I said to myself, I wanna be on stage for the Super Bowl in front of my mom and I worked my ass off to get that f*cking position. And it was ripped away from me but this motherf*cking moment right here… they can’t take this from me.”

Although Lil Wayne couldn’t celebrate what he imagined was a sure thing at home, he was part of something else worth celebrating. After a failed attempted during Essence Fest 2024, every member of the Hot Boys (Lil Wayne, Juvenile, Turk, and B.G.) finally reunited onstage for the first time in 15 years. The group delivered a nostalgic set (viewable here) of their Southern classics “Get Your Roll On,” “Still Fly,” and more.

Juvenile & Mannie Fresh Are Down To Join Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Performance

Juvenile was previously very angry at the NFL for not picking Lil Wayne as the next Super Bowl halftime performer, a spot that Kendrick Lamar got. But it seems like he’s down to join forces to make things right in his eyes. Moreover, the Cash Money alum and his label mate Mannie Fresh recently stopped by Power 106‘s “Brown Bag Mornings” program, during which they discussed Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans next February. Of course, you probably know all the discourse around the halftime show pick. The hometown “snub,” the Drake beef, Young Money loyalty, etc. However, they think it could be a huge moment.

“Oh, we are there,” Juvenile remarked when asked about Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show performance and whether they’d accept Kendrick’s call for them to perform if he makes it. “Kendrick is one of the best performers we’ve ever seen. […] In the hip-hop world, he raises the bar. So it’s something that everybody wants to see. And if he calls, I’m there.”

Juvenile & Mannie Fresh Address Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl

Their Super Bowl LIX conversation begins at around the 16-minute mark.

“The thing is, the Internet makes something that it’s not,” Mannie Fresh added concerning Kendrick Lamar. “[They] feel like we took a side because we said, ‘It would be cool if Wayne was in it.’ Of course we do, that’s our team. But, respectfully, Kendrick is, you know, he’s that dude.” Juvenile added that he never meant to shade K.Dot and never did, remarking on how he doesn’t tear people down to lift others up. However, he did speak on how Lil Wayne really wanted that Super Bowl halftime show and campaigned for it, suggesting that the Compton lyricist should at least reach out to try to make something happen.

Will that really manifest when Young Money and Drake’s entourage probably don’t want anything to do with Kendrick Lamar at this point? Maybe… Maybe not. Despite the mixed reactions to the NFL’s selection, everyone is still very curious as to what will go down in New Orleans on February 9. Many hip-hop fans would love to see Cash Money represented onstage, even if it seems unlikely. Let’s cross our fingers and see what comes next.

Juvenile Goes Ballistic On The NFL For Lil Wayne Super Bowl Snub

It’s safe to say that the internet is pretty split on the decision to invite Kendrick Lamar to perform at Super Bowl 59. Drake fans are definitely seething right about now, especially with the potential for him to be dissed on one of the biggest national stages in the world. However, it seems that the majority of the people who disagree with this choice are Lil Wayne fans. With the NFL championship in New Orleans for the third time this century, supporters of his don’t understand the snub.

In just the five days since the reveal, we have seen multiple friends of his speak out against it. Birdman, Weezy’s daughter Reginae Carter, Master P, and and Cam’ron are just a few. Now, you can add fellow Hot Boys member Juvenile to that growing list. According to a repost from The Shade Room, the “Back That Azz Up” songwriter took to social media to share his passionate thoughts.

A post shared by The Shade Room (@theshaderoom)

Instead of calling out JAY-Z and Roc Nation, Juvenile takes aim at the NFL and its controversial commissioner, Roger Goodell. “My hatred is toward the NFL”, he begins. “I feel like y’all should step in. Y’all have yet to put a hip-hop artist from New Orleans on the damn Super Bowl. I feel like every time y’all come here y’all should have someone from our city on it”. He continues, “But this time it hard when you don’t have Lil Wayne… I don’t see how the f*** y’all don’t have Lil Wayne doin’ the Halftime Show. Somebody that has a whole bunch of f***ing hits, and somebody that really deserves it, and somebody that can bring out multiple artists of all genres”. Juvenile signs off with a warning, saying, “So this goes out to you Roger Goodell. You comin’ into our city, suckin’ up our culture, and makin’ up all of this money… and leavin’ us dry… Gotta stop”.

What are your thoughts on Juvenile’s rant on the NFL being the one to blame for Lil Wayne’s Super Bowl snub? Do you think the commissioner will do anything about this? Are people’s frustrations about this decision to have Kendrick Lamar as the performer valid, why or why not? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Juvenile, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, and the NFL. Lil Wayne Is Bringing Back His Lil Weezyana Fest With Rob49 And A Hot Boys Reunion

Fresh off collaborations with Cordae, DJ Premier, and Jessie Reyez, Lil Wayne has announced the dates and lineup for the return of his music festival, Lil Weezyana Fest, after taking 2023 off.

The Lil Weezyana Festival returns to Smoothie King Center arena on November 2, with performances from Rob49 and Lil Wayne’s former group, Hot Boys. The Hot Boys performance will be the first time the quartet of B.G, Juvenile, Lil Wayne, and Turk have performed as a group since 2003. A reunion of the group was billed for Essence Fest this year, but Wayne ended up performing his own, separate set, to fans’ confusion and chagrin.

The group was disbanded after Juvenile and B.G accused Cash Money Records CEO Birdman of not paying them. Three of the group’s members, B.G, Turk, and Wayne, then spent significant time serving prison sentences for various offenses — mostly surrounding firearms possession charges. Turk was released from prison in October 2012 after serving nine years for being a felon in possession of a firearm and other charges; B.G served 11 years on possession of a firearm and was released last year; Lil Wayne spent the least amount of time in prison for possession and has been the most active member of the group musically since 2011. Juvenile remains the only member who was never incarcerated.

In addition to the Hot Boys reunion, the flyer for Lil Weezyana Fest touts a DJ set from former Cash Money producer Mannie Fresh, as well as “surprise guests,” which have, in the past, included Drake — who could use a strong bounce back after his early 2024 struggles with Kendrick Lamar.

Live Nation Urban announced today that Lil Wayne’s artist-curated festival, Lil’ WeezyAna Fest, will return to his hometown of New Orleans on November 2 at the Smoothie King Center. Produced by Young Money, DMANI, and Live Nation Urban, the festival promises a unique experience with some of this year’s hottest acts. The 2024 lineup includes a special Hot Boys reunion featuring Lil Wayne, Juvenile, B.G., and Turk and performances by Rob49 and Mannie Fresh. Additional artists and activations will be announced in the coming weeks.

Tickets for Lil’ WeezyAna Fest will be available via artist presale starting today at 10 AM PT/12 PM CT, with general sales beginning on September 6 at 8 AM PT/10 AM CT.

“Lil Wayne embodies the spirit of New Orleans, and Lil’ WeezyAna Fest is a stellar showcase of the city’s dynamic and flourishing music scene. Live Nation Urban celebrates this amazing event and is proud to continue to partner and cultivate the growth of this festival for years to come,” said Brandon Pankey, Vice President of Business Development & Operations Live Nation Urban.

Since 2015, Lil’ WeezyAna Fest has become an annual homecoming celebration highlighting New Orleans’ musical history and allowing Lil Wayne to give back to the community. Past festivals have featured dynamic lineups, including NBA Youngboy, Megan Thee Stallion, Drake, Nicki Minaj, and many more. This year’s event aims to be just as unforgettable.

[WATCH] Vevo, Juvenile and Mannie Fresh Release Performance Videos For “Back That Azz Up” And “Party”

Vevo, the world’s leading music video network, announces Juvenile and Mannie Fresh as the next artists in their Ctrl series with a performance of “Back That Azz Up” and “Party” premiering today.

Vevo’s Ctrl series highlights the work of hard-hitting, cutting-edge musicians making an impact in today’s music scene – both emerging and established. These artists demand attention, and Vevo’s Ctrl shines a deserving spotlight. Juvenile and Mannie Fresh’s performances follow sessions from Rick Ross, Common, Rapsody, Fat Joe, Jeezy, Jadakiss, Fabolous, A$AP Ferg and more.

New Orleans rapper Juvenile is a Southern hip-hop veteran. Born Terius Gray, Juvenile was one of the initial figures involved in New Orleans’ “bounce” craze of the early ’90s, an uptempo style of hip-hop that combined gangster rap and party music. In 1997, Juvenile joined Cash Money, releasing his album Solja Rags that same year, as well as joining fellow Cash Money artists Lil Wayne, B.G., and Turk in the Hot Boys, who also released their debut album, Get It How U Live!. Both debuts were produced in total by Mannie Fresh, who was back for Juvenile’s 1998 solo release 400 Degreez, his platinum-selling, breakthrough effort thanks in part to the successful single “Back That Azz Up”.

In 1998, Mannie Fresh, half of the brains behind the Cash Money label, formed Big Tymers with Birdman, releasing a series of successful singles and albums. In 2004, Mannie busted out on his own with The Mind of Mannie Fresh, before returning to produce several tracks on Juvenile’s album Rejuvenation in 2012.

The two Cash Money heavyweights now reunite to perform their iconic hit, “Back That Azz Up” and “Party” for Vevo’s Original Content series, Ctrl.

Juvenile Claims His Higher Album Sales Give Him “Best Rapper” Title Over Jay-Z & Nas

The conversation around who is the best rapper of all time has lasted in hip-hop culture ever since the 1980s, and it will continue to define the community’s values and philosophies. Of course, there are many different metrics to consider: lyrics, sales, hits, impact, influence, innovation, or a holistic combination of all those things. But according to Juvenile, the massive sales behind his classic 1998 album 400 Degreez puts him above rap legends like Jay-Z and Nas (for the record, the Cash Money MC’s pick for the best rapper is Lil Wayne). He made these comments during a recent interview, specifically speaking on how people broadly compare Southern rap to more lyrically minded East Coast counterparts such as Hov and Esco and undervalue it as a result.

A hit is a hit,” Juveline’s remarks began. “You don’t have to be the best rapper. Some of the best rappers… can’t make a hit. That s**t don’t mean nothing. The best rapper in the world don’t mean nothing if you ain’t got no f***ing hits. N***as always talk about ‘Man, Nas, da da da, Jay-Z…’ Okay, who sold the most records? I think that’s what counts, right?

Juvenile Makes A Case For Himself As A Better Rapper Than Nas & Jay-Z

“Yeah, let’s not go off the – let’s just do numbers,” Juvenile continued. “Know what I’m saying? Yeah. Let’s see who sold the most records on each solo album. Numbers don’t lie, man. Pick your best Nas album. Pick your best Jay-Z album, right? Yeah. And I’m going to take [400 Degreez] and you tell me who sold the most on a solo album. I’m taking 400.” For what it’s worth, this project has sold over six million units as of 2021 and received a quadruple platinum certification in 2000.

Meanwhile, Nas’ best-selling album, It Was Written, has sold around 3 million units, whereas Jay-Z’s best-seller Hard Knock Life… Vol. 2 is right up there with 400 Degreez with 6 million units. So while Juvenile has a point here, the conversation definitely shifts when you talk about total sales across a discography, and when comparing one rapper’s biggest hit to another’s. There are many different metrics to consider here, and many different reasons to call someone the best rapper.

Juvenile Claims That Lil Wayne Is The Greatest Rapper Of All Time

Juvenile is a legend. His third album, 400 Degreez, went quadruple platinum and helped to solidify Cash Money as a viable brand. He was the first member of the Hot Boys to really break out into solo stardom, paving the way for the likes of Mannie Fresh and, of course, Lil Wayne. Juvenile and Fresh recently went on The Breakfast Club to talk about their impending Hot Boys reunion, and they decided to stand up for their Cash Money brother. Juve told Charlamagne tha God and the rest of the Breakfast Club crew that Lil Wayne was the greatest rapper to ever do it.

The whole topic came about courtesy of Charlamagne. The host asked whether Lil Wayne is finally getting his due from fans as a lyricist. Juvenile did him one better, and proclaimed Weezy the best to ever pick up a microphone. “I been with him, that’s my dude,” he said. “I saw the whole process of him, just seeing the whole development of Wayne and where he’s at right now.” Juvenile is not alone in this belief. Kendrick Lamar, the rapper who many believe is a GOAT candidate himself, sang the praises of Weezy back in 2022.

Juvenile Praised Lil Wayne’s Evolution As An Artist

“Lil Wayne is the greatest,” Lamar told The Coveteur. “Not only because of his music but also because of the culture he put behind it.” The Compton icon made sure to give Juvenile his flowers as well, given that both men were crucial to Cash Money’s success. “It was a big part of what he was talking about, so we always hold Lil Wayne in high regards,” he explained. “Juvenile as well. And yeah, it’s the impact of them man. To be a part of it the same way he was a part of it years later is just a great feeling.”

Juvenile and Lil Wayne are on good terms, despite the seeming confusion between them. The former claimed that a Hot Boys album is in the works. The latter, though, claims to have no idea that an album is being recorded despite being a member. Wayne went on Not Just Football With Cam Heyward in June, and was thoroughly confused when the host asked him about the Hot Boys reunion. “Sh*t, you just told me,” the rapper quipped. “When they coming? When them boys coming? I need to go check it out. I would love to see that.”

Lil Wayne Skipped The Cash Money Reunion To Opt For A Solo Set At Essence Festival 2024, Now People Have Questions

Welp, Birdman’s subtle suggestion that Drake would make a surprise appearance at Essence Festival 2024 didn’t pan out. Still, yesterday (July 5), attendees of the culture’s biggest annual event were treated to a special onstage reunion.

During the “Ms. Gladys” rapper’s performance, he brought out New Orleans’ hometown rap group, Hot Boys. The crowd cheered in excitement seeing B.G., Juvenile, and even Mannie Fresh together, the Cash Money reunion hype did not translate to viewers outside of The Big Easy. Mainly, due to Turk’s absence and Lil Wayne’s notable decision to appear after everyone left the stage. Now, users online have questions.

Lil Wayne and Birdman tension has long since documented in music, online, as well as in the courtroom. However, in recent time, the pair seemed to have squashed their previous issues. Rumors circulating online allege Wayne was present and ready to join the reunion, but not without Turk (whom reportedly isn’t in good standings with Birdman). Sadly, as a result, the Hot Boys reunion feel through.

Supporters are now under the impression that Birdman and Wayne’s former feud could be back on. Those flames were further fanned, when Birdman delivered a verbal jab before leaving the stage just before Wayne performed a medley of his hits. “I would never let my city down and be a p*ssy ass n**** for anybody,” he said.

So, it is too early to ask if Lil Wayne does headline the Superbowl 2025 Halftime show in New Orleans if the collection could put thing to the side?
