A New Movie Based On Pharrell’s Childhood Will Feature Halle Bailey, Janelle Monáe, Anderson. Paak, And Missy Elliott

Pharrell had one of the year’s most notable movies with Piece By Piece, a biopic animated in the style of Lego. He’s not finished telling his story through film yet: It was just revealed he’s teaming up with Michel Gondry on Golden, a movie set for 2025 that was inspired by his childhood.

The cast is led by Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Halle Bailey. Bailey isn’t the only noteworthy musician in the movie, as the film also features Janelle Monáe, Anderson. Paak, and Missy Elliott. The cast is rounded out by Da’vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, and Quinta Brunson.

Of the movie, Pharrell tells Empire:

Piece By Piece is about my life, whereas Golden is about a neighborhood that I grew up in. This is very different. It’s a musical expedition, set in the summer of 1977 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with the spirit of the music [of that time]. You know how in Dirty Dancing and Grease, the music was almost a character? That’s what it’s like in this film. It’s a coming-of-age story about self-discovery and pursuing your dreams, but it’s so much more magical than that. It’s a celebration of Black life, Black culture, and most importantly, Black joy.”

The film was originally titled Atlantis, after the housing development where Pharrell grew up. Of the name change, Pharrell explains, “It just speaks to the narrative, the area, the energy and literally everything about [the film, which is] this analysis of what being ‘golden’ is. Children and grown-ups with inner children within them can connect to it and realize that there’s a golden aspect to them too, whether it’s realized or latent.”

Both Heidi Klum And Janelle Monáe Wore Unbelievably Elaborate ‘ET’ Costumes This Halloween

“Great minds think alike,” as the oft-quoted saying goes, and when it comes to Halloween costumes, perhaps the two greatest minds are Heidi Klum and Janelle Monáe. Year after year, both entertainers go above and beyond with their Halloween costumes, and in 2024, they were on the exact same page: They both went as ET.

Monáe showed off their take on The Jennifer Hudson Show, and their blanket-wrapped version, a spitting image of the movie character, had blinking eyes in the costume head and a light-up finger and heart and everything.

Klum showed off her interpretation at her annual Halloween party yesterday, and it was similarly impressive. The New York Times notes the costume featured a “motorized headpiece with a movable mouth and eyes, controlled remotely by a member of Ms. Klum’s team.” They also noted that given the difficulty of getting in and out of the costume, Klum opted to wear an adult diaper. She said, “Maybe I never need to use the diaper, but at least that way I don’t have to think about it.”

In a recent Hollywood Reporter interview, Monáe revealed they have “a fairy Halloween mother” who helps fund their costumes, saying, “My job is to make people believe in their imagination. That is a job, that is my purpose. Imagination inspires nations. It is important to the committee of imagineers that I go out and I do that good work. There’s a fund that is set aside to make people believe in art, and again, believe in performance art. What I’m doing is performance art, and it is drawing attention to the need for money in the arts, for more grants for schools. We must tap into the imaginations of our kids. These are the people that are going to be the innovators of the future. I’m so happy to have support of people that believe in performance art and believe in me as the person to get that message out.”

Janelle Monae Takes Down Michael Jackson Parody Video After Fan Backlash

Janelle Monae caught an unfortunate bit of backlash for some slightly dark humor the other day, as they posted a video reenacting Michael Jackson’s infamous balcony-baby incident (if you don’t know what we’re talking about, you’ve got some serious pop culture history to learn). They didn’t address some fans’ controversial reactions to it, but they did seem to quietly take it down from their page, so we’d assume that they regret the decision to at least share the clip. It’s a pretty odd way to pay tribute to the King of Pop, but then again, maybe it was to highlight the controversies held in that career as well. Nevertheless, it looks like it won’t be a hot debate topic any longer.

Furthermore, this is especially curious because Janelle Monáe is a big fan of Michael, and especially of his sister, Janet Jackson. “We gather all around the world with your music as our soundtrack,” they introduced the Rhythm Nation icon for her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, calling her the “legendary queen of Black girl magic.” “We applaud you for your commitment to excellence [and] we celebrate you for giving us memories we wish we could bottle up and save for the next lifetime. History is not complete without you, Janet.”

Janelle Monae Seemingly Takes Down Controversial Michael Jackson Video

Meanwhile, Janelle Monáe recently commented on how they pick out movie roles, and their explanation was quite curious. “Really, I love to get to know the characters and feel with anything I’m doing,” they told The Guardian. “I really have to feel it in my pubic hairs -– they have to vibrate. My underarm hairs definitely tingled when I got the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery script.”

As for Michael Jackson, Janelle Monae’s odd reenactment wasn’t the only questionable “tribute” to him from artistic collaborators that raised fans’ eyebrows as of late. Janet Jackson herself caused a commotion when she chose to pose with someone dressed as her brother for a meet and greet with her. While many folks found this disrespectful, it also stands to reason that Janet sees this kind of thing often. As such, maybe she can see it from a more appreciative and respectful point of view than our Internet-influenced perspective.

Janelle Monae Recreates Bizarre Michael Jackson Balcony Scene

Janelle Monae is an unpredictable artist. One never knows what she is going to say or do next. That’s a feature, not a bug. Monae is one of the most consistently inventive and exciting artists on the planet. All that said, her latest venture caught fans off guard. The singer was vacationing in Paris with her cyberpup and decided to show it off to fans by dangling it over a balcony. The parallels to the infamous Michael Jackson incident, in which the singer dangled his infant over the balcony, were not accidental.

The footage of Janelle Monae was obtained by The Shade Room. In it, the singer can be seen wearing a black wig and a red shirt identical to Jackson’s. Monae even went through the extra care of putting her cyberpup in a blanket, much like Jackson did with his son back in 2001. The whole recreation was odd. Monae dangled her pet over the balcony, then walked inside. She returned a few seconds later, before hiding behind a curtain and tossing a towel into the crowd. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. That said, nobody has attempted to recreate this particular moment in MJ’s life. It’s a choice.

Janelle Monae is frequently compared to Prince, in terms of style and musical range. She also worked with the iconic pop star before his death. However, the singer has always maintained a soft spot for Michael Jackson. She gushed about the King of Pop’s lasting influence during a 2015 appearance on Conan. She went as far as to claim that MJ inspired her to become a musician. “According to my Aunt Gloria,” Monae recounted. “It was apparent that making music was my dream after she took me to Michael Jackson’s Bad concert in my hometown Kansas City.”

The singer claimed that Jackson’s impact was so significant that began to emulate him. “The next morning I went to church and started beating on the back of a pew, tapping and singing Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It.’ That moment gave me great joy and extra confidence.” Monae’s confidence is undeniable, as evidenced by her electric stage presence. The balcony recreation was a tribute to a formative musical influence, and as unorthodox as it was, it served as a full circle moment for the acclaimed singer.

Janelle Monae Explains Unique Process For Picking Movie Roles

Janelle Monae has always been recognized as an incredible musical talent. They have won Grammy Awards and received glowing praise since their debut album in 2010. Something that day one fans may not have expected, however, was Monae’s seamless transition to film. They have proven just as adept at playing pivotal roles in Oscar-nominated releases like Moonlight and Hidden Figures (both 2016). Part of the reason Janelle Monae has managed to transition so well is because they have a very specific process when it comes to picking scripts.

Monae revealed their process during a recent interview with The Guardian. The main point of attraction? A movie role has to have a very specific kind of vibration. “Really, I love to get to know the characters and feel with anything I’m doing,” they told the outlet. “I really have to feel it in my p**ic hairs – they have to vibrate.” Monae pointed to their acclaimed dual performance in the 2022 thriller Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery as an example of this vibration. “My underarm hairs definitely tingled when I got the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery script,” they quipped.

Janelle Monae Prioritizes Roles That Make Them “Vibrate”

Janelle Monae has a secondary metric for picking movies, and its the director. They had such a good time with Glass Onion director Rian Johnson, that they even voiced their desire to appear in the third installment in the series. “That was exciting, to go to Greece and work with Rian Johnson,” they added. “Who is a wonderful human. I’m so excited for Knives Out 3. I want to be a part of it so badly that I might get plastic surgery and audition as a brand new character.” Given that the Knives Out franchise makes a point of changing its cast each time out, Monae is unlikely to get their wish.

Fortunately, Monae doesn’t need to rely on sequels. The multi-faceted entertainer is set to play the iconic Josephine Baker in the upcoming TV series De La Resistance. The series will be made with A24, and will focus on the period of time in which Baker was a performer and a spy for the French Resistance during WWII. Janelle Monae added a third, more light-hearted metric for how to cast them, and its pretty simple: candy. “I love places that have snacks like Skittles and M&Ms,” they quipped.

The DMV area’s All Things Go festival is expanding to New York City. The long-running festival has announced its Big Apple lineup, which will be headlined by Janelle Monáe, Renée Rapp, and Muna. Queen Latifah Twerked On Janelle Monáe And Gabrielle Union At OUTLOUD Music Festival During WeHo Pride

Janelle Monáe released their Grammy-nominated album The Age Of Pleasure nearly one year ago — long live the perfectly utilized 6/9 release date — and Monáe is still very much in the afterglow.

Monáe headlined the 2024 OUTLOUD Music Festival on Saturday, June 1, in West Hollywood Park as part of WeHo Pride 2024. During their set, Monáe brought out Gabrielle Union and Queen Latifah. “I want my sisters out here,” Monáe said. “We gonna walk this runway together. Legends. Legends. Period.” Latifah and Union flanked Monáe down the runway, and then all three danced it out for the cheering crowd. “I love you,” Monáe said twice, pointing at Latifah and Union. “We love you. Say y’all love ’em!”

(((( I love us and this so damn much )))),” Monáe later wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in response to a fan-taken video of the moment. “Happy PRIDE!!! [rainbow emoji, smiling face with hearts emoji, heart on fire emoji, silver heart emoji, lipstick emoji] @itsgabrielleu @IAMQUEENLATIFAH.”

Kesha and Kylie Minogue also performed as OUTLOUD headliners, while other notable acts included Adam Lambert, Big Freedia, Doechii, Keke Palmer, Noah Cyrus, Diplo, and former Uproxx cover star Ashnikko.

Janelle Monáe Joins Pharrell-Produced Musical at Universal

Janelle Monáe Joins Pharrell-Produced Musical at Universal

Actress, singer, and songwriter Janelle Monáe is the latest star added to the high-profile cast of Universal Pictures’ musical film project from Pharrell and Michael Gondry.

As reported in Variety, Monáe joins previously announced cast members Kelvin Harrison Jr., Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Halle Bailey, Brian Tyree Henry, and Missy Elliott.

This makes perfect sense from a casting standpoint. The project is described as a musical and Monáe, is a star on all fronts – especially musically where she first made a name for herself. So adding A-list artists like Monáe, Bailey and Elliott only solidifies the authenticity of the crux of this art imitating life project inspired by Pharrell William’s real life experiences coming up in Virginia Beach’s humble Atlantis Apartments in 1977.

Gondry is directing from a script penned by Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson. Pharrell and Mimi Valdés will produce through his production company i am OTHER. Gil Netter produces through his company, Gil Netter Productions. Ryan Jones, Universal’s senior VP of production development Ryan Jones and Universal’s director of production development, Christine Sun, will handle the studio, as reported by Variety.

This project clearly shows that Pharrell is in a biopic/life storytelling stage of his journey. He is also collaborating with The LEGO Group to produce Piece by Piece, a film about Pharrell’s life experienced through LEGO animation. Well, on that note, insert the ‘Neptunes’ sound. IYKYK
