Ice Spice Settles “In Ha Mood” Lawsuit After Brooklyn Rapper Claims His Song Is “Strikingly Similar”

Ice Spice has reached a settlement agreement to end a copyright lawsuit regarding her hit song, “In Ha Mood.” Another rapper by the name of D.Chamberz had claimed that the track was “strikingly similar” to his own 2021 song, “In That Mood.” In federal court on Friday, attorneys for both sides confirmed their decision to settle, as caught by Billboard.

In the lawsuit, Chamberz had argued that his song earned “significant airplay” on radio stations in Spice’s hometown of New York City, including Hot 97 and Power 105.1. “By every method of analysis, ‘In Ha Mood’ is a forgery,” his attorneys wrote when filing the lawsuit back in January. “Any proper comparative analysis of the beat, lyrics, hook, rhythmic structure, metrical placement, and narrative context will demonstrate that ‘In Ha Mood’ was copied.”

He further argued that the similarities “cannot be purely coincidental” and boil down to “the core of each work.” In addition to Spice, the lawsuit named her frequent collaborator, producer RiotUSA (Ephrem Lopez, Jr.), as well as Universal Music Group, Capitol Records, and 10K Projects. All of the parties denied the allegations. Ice Spice first released “In Ha Mood” as a single ahead of her debut EP Like..? in 2023. It reached No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100

Ice Spice Has Reportedly Settled Her ‘In Ha Mood’ Copyright Infringement Lawsuit

Earlier in the month, Ice Spice found herself in the middle of a professional controversy with former friend Cleotrapa. But as of today (September 23), the “Popa” rapper was supposedly able to put another dispute behind her.

According to Billboard, Ice Spice has reached a settlement in a copyright infringement surrounding her breakout song, “In Ha Mood.”

Although the specifics of the argument has not been shared, based on Billboard’s report, all parties were agreed to resolve the matter.

Back in January, fellow recording artist D.Chamberz launched the suit against Ice Spice, the track’s producer RiotUSA, and her record labels (Universal Music Group, Capitol Records and 10K Projects). D.Chamberz alleged that his track was not only release prior to Ice Spice’s song, but it also gained traction which used to emphasize the likelihood of the musicians coming across it.

“It cannot be purely coincidental,” said D.Chamberz’s attorney. “Go [to] the core of each work.”

D.Chamberz argued Ice Spice’s single copied his record’s “beat, lyrics, hook, rhythmic structure, metrical placement, and narrative context of his track.”

Ice Spice’s legal representatives denied the accusation.

However, D.Chamberz attornies doubled down on their arguements. “By every method of analysis, ‘In Ha Mood’ is a forgery. Any proper comparative analysis of the beat, lyrics, hook, rhythmic structure, metrical placement, and narrative context will demonstrate that ‘In Ha Mood’ was copied.”

Why Is Ice Spice Being Sued?

Ice Spice squeezed an entire celebrity arc since leaping onto the scene with “Munch” in late 2022. The Bronx, New York-bred rapper has gotten into an ultimately harmless public spat with Drake, befriended Taylor Swift, delivered a successful debut EP, netted three top-10 Billboard Hot 100 singles (“Karma” with Swift, “Boy’s A Liar, Pt. 2” with PinkPantheress, and “Princess Diana” with Nicki Minaj), attended the Met Gala, served as the musical guest on SNL, and landed a forthcoming Super Bowl commercial (after already co-starring in a commercial with Ben Affleck).

But the most recent development officially solidifies Ice Spice as an A-lister.

Why Is Ice Spice Being Sued?

On Wednesday, January 17, TMZ reported that someone named D.Chamberz is suing Ice Spice for her “In Ha Mood” single, citing “copyright infringement” because he claims “he wrote, recorded and released a song called ‘In That Mood’ a year before her famous single.”

TMZ’s report continues, “According to the lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, D.Chamberz says he released his song on all major digital platforms in January 2022, and he thinks Ice Spice’s producer heard it on the radio way before her song came out. He claims Ice Spice’s song copies the beat, lyrics, hook, rhythmic structure, metrical placement, and narrative context of his track.”

D.Chamberz asserts that he performed his song “dozens of times” in New York City, “near where Ice and her producer, Riot, reside.” But D.Chamberz isn’t deterred if Ice Spice and Riot didn’t attend any of his performances because he also believes “it’s more than likely” that Riot would have heard his song on New York City’s Hot 97, “and he says there are social media receipts” to prove it.

Ice Spice released “In Ha Mood” in January 2023, and it peaked at No. 58 on the Hot 100 on the chart dated March 25, 2023.

Ice Spice Is “In Ha Mood” For “Saturday Night Live” Performance

The Saturday Night Live stage is an iconic one in pop culture, whether for its famous performances, massive stars, or the celebrities that introduce them onto it. Moreover, for the sketch comedy show’s season premiere on Saturday (October 14), they went all-out to create a pretty big moment to kick things off. Pete Davidson hosted the whole affair, marking his hilarious, poignant, and shot-taking return to SNL. Not only that, but none other than Taylor Swift was the one to introduce the episode’s performer to the stage. With one of her biggest hits and her newest one, Ice Spice rocked the legendary TV show to the core.

Of course, once fans heard this news a couple of weeks back, they went absolutely ballistic at this prospect. The Bronx rapper is having arguably the most dominant and definitive 2023 of the whole game, at the very least for rising artists. In fact, it’s a stretch to say that she’s even an up-and-comer right now; she basically made it to the top. Regardless of that whole debate, Ice Spice still came through to impress, and ran through “In Ha Mood” with her trademark confidence.

In addition, the 23-year-old also debuted her newest single, “Pretty Girl” with Rema, who she brought onstage to join her. It’s a pretty new sound for Ice Spice, with a slightly slower tempo and more breezy and summery instrumentation. The song takes some Afrobeats and dancehall inspirations, as well as a Jersey kick pattern, to create a pretty genre-fusing cut. Of course, a lot of that consideration is thanks to Rema, whose gorgeous voice and flow inject a lot of personality into the rap diva’s already charismatic verses.

Meanwhile, one can only dream of what the “Princess Diana” star is going to do next. Maybe it will be more commercial opportunities and high-profile appearances, or maybe she’s hard at work on her full-length debut. Either way, it’s clear that she wants to end the year as strong as she started it, and there’s not a soul in the world that can blame her. Ice Spice Was ‘In Ha Mood’ In Her Flashy Pink ‘Saturday Night Live’ Debut

Ice Spice is running New York City. With several hits under her belt, like “Munch” and “Deli,” the breakthrough rapper has quickly become the face of New York drill. Earlier this month, she covered Variety‘s New York issue. Tonight (October 14), she accomplished another New York milestone — performing on Saturday Night Live.

In her first performance on the season 49 premiere on SNL — which was hosted by fellow New Yorker, Pete Davidson, Ice took to the stage in a performance of her viral hit, “In Ha Mood.”

Joined by two background dancers, Ice commanded the stage, grooving to the beat as flashing pink lights shined upon them. She and her pretty girl clique wowed a cheering crowd.

Performing on Saturday Night Live is surely a nervewracking experience, especially if it’s an artist’s first time, however, Ice maintained her confidence throughout the set.

As she reps her hometown with pride, performing on SNL is a career milestone for Ice. In her Variety interview, she shared that no amount of fame or notoriety could make her forget her New York roots.

“B*tch, just because I spent $100,000 in Chanel doesn’t mean I’m no longer from New York. Like, hello?,” Ice said.

Ice Spice And North West Linked Up For A Hilarious Dance Video (And It All Started From A Drawing)

At nine years old, North West is living the dream. Over the past year, she’s garnered nearly 15 million followers on her TikTok page, which she shares with her mother, Kim Kardashian.

In her videos, fans can see North as she and her friends and family make milkshakes, apply makeup, and draw some of her incredible drawings. Last month, she shared a clip of an uncanny portrait she drew of rapper Ice Spice, as the latter’s verse in PinkPantheress’ “Boy’s A Liar, Pt. 2” played in the background.

A little over two weeks later, it appears North manifested something special. Today (March 3), Ice Spice shared a video on her TikTok page at the Kardashian home, where she is seen dancing with North and one of her friends.

In the above clip, the three bust moves to Spice’s viral track, “In Ha Mood,” which is mashed up in a special remix with ad-libs from The Buggles’ “Video Killed The Radio Star.”

North also shared a video clip on her and Kim’s TikTok page, which featured another portrait of Ice Spice.

We love you, ice spice, 🧊🧊🌶🌶

La La Anthony & Kim Kardashian Rap Ice Spice’s “In Ha Mood” For TikTok: Watch

As she steps into her 40s as a single woman, Kim Kardashian seems to be having more fun than ever before. Following a months-long fling with Saturday Night Live alum Pete Davidson, she’s been focusing on herself and her four children – not to mention her countless other daily commitments. Even with such a busy schedule, one thing that the reality star has consistently made time for is filming TikTok videos with her eldest daughter, North West.

The 9-year-old’s profile on the social media site was a source of contention between her parents for some time, but now, the young girl is free to express herself creatively on the platform. There are restrictions in place, such as a comment ban on their post. Also, North can’t scroll freely through her “For You” page. Still, she and Kardashian have amassed an impressive 14.7 million followers thanks to their heartwarming and hilarious videos.

FaceTime Foolishness

In the page’s most recent upload, it’s the 42-year-old who takes the spotlight, along with an appearance from her close friend, La La Anthony. As (presumably) North records, her mom lipsyncs along to Ice Spice’s “In Ha Mood,” which has been a TikTok favourite as of late. “I tried dippin’, he beg me to stay,” she mouths along. For the next bars, she reveals the BMF actress on FaceTime, also rapping along.

“In the party, he just wanna rump / Big boobs and the butt stay plump,” the song continues as Kardashian and her “baddie friend” take turns trading lines. Their timing certainly wasn’t perfect, as many have pointed out online, but it’s the thought that counts. Of course, this isn’t the only shoutout Spice has gotten from North and her mom this year.

North West Loves Ice Spice Too

Back in February, Kim Kardashian and her kiddo showed off their lipsyncing skills to yet another of the Bronx baddie’s songs. Following her debut Like..? EP, Spice teamed up with foreign songstress Pinkpantheress for the remix of her hit single, “Boy’s a liar.” It’s understandably been a massive hit on TikTok, with millions of people using the collaboration to soundtrack their videos.

Elsewhere, North also drew an impressive portrait of the famous redhead, which she subsequently shared on social media. Plenty of positive feedback came in from fans, as well as a response from Ice Spice herself. Read what the rising rap star had to say here, and check back later for more pop culture news.
