TDE’s Punch Recalls the Infamous Diddy-J. Cole Fight During Podcast Appearance

TDE's Punch Recalls the Infamous Diddy - J. Cole Fight During Podcast Appearance

TDE’s President Punch pulled up to Tank and J. Valentine’s R&B Money podcast, recalling the aftermath of Kendrick Lamar dropping “Control.”

In the past, stories about this infamous night seemed to allege that Lamar’s confrontation with Diddy started a fight between the embattled Bad Boy mogul and J. Cole.

Punch stated he and the unnamed artist, presumably Lamar, were confronted about the song, which had the King of New York claim at the time. Punch stated one of the homies was drunk and he and another homie got into an argument. The moment carried to a VIP section, where the “front row of the Grammys” was there.

The two who got into an altercation earlier, the drunk homie, presumably Diddy, and the other is reportedly J. Cole, began to heat up again in the section as Diddy threatened to cut Cole’s throat with a broken bottle, erupting into a scuffle of celebrities. The entire wild story can be heard below.

In 2021, J. Cole raised the eyebrows of many Hip-Hop fans when he addressed a rumored fight with Diddy on “l e t. g o. m y. h a n d” from The Off-Season album.

Diving into the story a bit more, J. Cole’s manager, Ibrahim “IB” Hamad, appeared on the Say Less podcast and added a couple of additional wrinkles to the story.

One of the key moments for “IB” was the star-studded list of names present, specifically remembering how he and JAY-Z reacted to the situation.

“It wasn’t like, ‘Don’t talk to Kendrick like that!’ Kendrick was there, Top was there, JAY was there, Beyoncé was there. Me and Cole. You know, grown men got a little heated. All I remember is, me and Jay looking at each other like, ‘Oh, these n-ggas ‘bout to fight.’ And then just being like, ‘Oh no this is ‘bout to happen.’ I’ll leave it at that.”

He added, “that was a VMA party, everyone was there. Angela Yee was literally at the table. I fuck with Yee, but she got Rumor Report and shit. Walking out of there I’m like, ‘Oh this about to be baaad.’ But for some reason no one had a camera out, a couple people was talking about it, but you know.”

He would go on to reveal that Diddy’s vocals for that single were recorded during the last week of the recording.

Today In Hip Hop History: The Sugar Hill Gang Released ‘Rapper’s Delight’ 45 Years Ago

tumblr 045d99b2b98bc1cebd5b6e793ca2cc31 2184c814 500

On today’s date, 45 years ago, Hip Hop’s first Billboard Top 40 single, “Rapper’s Delight,” was released by Englewood, New Jersey’s Sugarhill GangAs one of  Hip Hop’s earliest relics, this single, written by The Cold Crush Brothers’ own Grandmaster Caz, is credited with bringing the art of rap to a multicultural mainstream audience.

In the ’70s, disco and soul still reigned supreme in the clubs and lounges of the country’s urban centers. In its most primitive form, Hip Hop was still misunderstood (and exclusive to New York City and California). Breaking, tagging, rapping, and spinning records were widely recognized as the borderline criminal activities of whatever city’s urban youth. The culture’s cult following was majority made up of housing project residence, the type to not frequent the discos and bars of their respective downtown centers. Every once in and awhile, someone would drop a single that would break through and get some shine on the club scene but never make much of a splash nationally. “Rapper’s Delight” was a different story.

On September 20, 1979, new wave bands Blondie and Chic were playing a concert at New York’s renown Palladium with British punk rock band The Clash; Hip Hop’s earliest socialite (and soon to be television host) Fab Five Freddy was on the scene with Sugarhill Gang members Big Bank Hank, Mike Wright, and Master Gee. Having just released a single featuring Chic’s hit single “Good Times” from their recent international album Risqué, it was natural for the gang to hop on stage and start freestyling as soon as Chic dropped the bass line.

Sometime later, Chic’s Nile Rodgers was out at New York’s Club Leviticus and heard a recorded cut of the very song The Sugarhill Gang ever-so-delightfully interrupted his concert weeks earlier. Enraged, Rodgers immediately sought legal action and attempted to sue the Sugarhill Gang for using his band’s instrumental in their single. The lawsuit was settled out of court, and appropriate credit was given to Chic in their part of the song.

With the lawsuit and legal attention came a swarm of popularity. Disc Jockeys in clubs across the country began to spin this record every night of the week. The single gained so much play in the United States that clubs across the globe began to push this song like no tomorrow. Although the single may have peaked at #36 on the Billboard 200, it was #1 in Canada and the Netherlands, #2 in Belgium, France, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and #3 in Germany and the UK. This single song sold platinum in both the United States and Canada, with over 5 million copies sold worldwide.

“Rapper’s Delight” may be the most important single of Hip Hop culture. It didn’t event style, it wasn’t the first to gain mainstream success, it wasn’t even from New York, but it was the biggest of its time. What “Rapper’s Delight” did was make it “ok” to listen to and support rap music out in the open. Before this single, Hip Hop was an urban taboo. Upon its release, the connotation transformed from one synonymous with the ghetto to a new and hip musical genre. In a way, “Rapper’s Delight” gentrified Hip Hop in a way that made it profitable. Without it, the culture would not be a powerful as it is today.

Tito Jackson, former member of the Jackson 5 and brother of Janet and Michael Jackson, is dead at 70 years old.

Tito’s (real name Toriano Adaryll Jackson) sons TJ, Taj, and Taryll confirmed his death on Instagram late last night/early this morning (September 16), writing:

“It’s with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson is no longer with us. We are shocked, saddened and heartbroken. Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their well-being. Some of you may know him as Tito Jackson from the legendary Jackson 5, some may know him as ‘Coach Tito’ or some know him as ‘Poppa T.’ Nevertheless, he will be missed tremendously. It will forever be ‘Tito Time’ for us. Please remember to do what our father always preached and that is ‘Love One Another.’ We love you Pops.

Your boys,

Taj, Taryll and TJ.”

Tito’s nephew Siggy Jackson also confirmed the news to People, while Steve Manning, a former Jackson family manager, told Entertainment Tonight he “believes” Tito suffered a heart attack while driving from New Mexico to Oklahoma.

Tito was born in Gary, Indiana on October 15, 1953. He was an original member of the Jackson 5 (later known as the Jacksons) and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of the group. He released his first solo album, Tito Time, in 2016, and it spawned two singles that landed on the Billboard Adult R&B Songs chart: “Get It Baby” featuring Big Daddy Kane and “One Way Street.” His final album released during his lifetime was 2021’s Under Your Spell.

In a 2021 interview with the Grammy Awards, Tito said, “I’m proud of my career. I wish I had the head I have now about my career when I was much younger. I could have done a lot more when I was younger. But I’m proud of my accomplishments — the records that we hold as well as the inductees and all of these other things. Like I said, what else do I have to prove? […] It’s just been great, you know? The brothers don’t record like we used to, but I think it’s important to keep on singing a song as long as there’s a song to sing.”

Tito Jackson, a member of the iconic Jackson 5, has passed away at the age of 70.

His sons, Taj, Taryll, and TJ Jackson, confirmed the news early Monday via a heartfelt Instagram tribute. The news was initially reported by “ET,” with Steve Manning, a longtime family friend and former manager, revealing that Jackson passed away on Sunday.

“It will forever be ‘Tito Time’ for us,” the sons wrote. “Please remember to do what our father always preached and that is ‘Love One Another.’ We love you Pops.”

Tito, along with his brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael, became a Motown sensation as part of the Jackson 5, later known as The Jacksons. The group’s string of Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits, including “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There,” sparked the siblings dancing and singing their way into the hearts of millions under the guidance of their father, Joe Jackson.

In 1997, Tito and the Jackson 5 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Throughout his career with the group, they earned three Grammy nominations for Best R&B Performance and Best Contemporary Vocal Performance by a duo or group. Over the years, they released 16 studio albums, 10 as the Jackson 5 and six as The Jacksons, achieving widespread success both as a group and as individuals.

Tito also pursued a solo career, releasing Tito Time in 2016 and Under Your Spell in 2021. As recently as last year, he collaborated with Brazilian artist Natalia Damini on their song “Attitude” and its accompanying music video.

Feds did a sweep in Columbus, GA. Among the 101 people arrested in a sweeping drug bust was rapper Peewee Longway.

Muscogee County Sherrif Greg Countryman announced “Operation Sweet Silence,” confirming the arrest of 101 people and assets of drugs, guns, and cash. According to Complex, the operation involved 250 agents from federal, local, and state groups.

Taken in the raid were 7.1 kilograms of fentanyl, 57.21 kilograms of cocaine, 55,248 pounds of marijuana, and 1.3 kilograms of heroin. The estimated sum of the seizure is over $200 million.

“If you’re involved in criminal activity, I want to send this message to you. Just because your name was not caught in the arrest yesterday, I don’t want you to relapse,” said the Sheriff. “I don’t want you to breathe a breath of fresh air, a sigh of relief, because our work is not done. Just because you were not arrested does not mean that we’re not looking at you. So don’t get too comfortable because our work is not finished.”

Conversations surrounding the Super Bowl halftime performance continue. This time, 50 Cent is weighing in.

Appearing on The Talk, 50 cosigned the selection. “I mean, it was a choice. As a solo artist right now, he’s the guy,” 50 said.

Roger Goodell praised the selection of Kendrick Lamar as the Super Bowl halftime performer.

Speaking with TMZ Sports, Goodell revealed he is “feeling great” about taking the spot and he is a fan of the rapper.

Kendrick Lamar will take center stage at the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show at The Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025. Roc Nation, Apple Music, and the NFL made the announcement, sparking excitement for the globally anticipated performance.

Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter, founder of Roc Nation, praised Lamar’s influence: “Kendrick Lamar is truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer. His deep love for hip-hop and culture informs his artistic vision… His impact will be felt for years to come.”

Seth Dudowsky, Head of Music at the NFL, echoed this sentiment, saying, “Few artists have impacted music and culture as profoundly as Kendrick Lamar… Kendrick has proven his unique ability to craft moments that resonate, redefine, and ultimately shake the very foundation of hip-hop.”

Apple Music’s Oliver Schusser emphasized the excitement: “Apple is thrilled to bring this show, starring the absolutely incomparable Kendrick Lamar, to fans worldwide with Apple Music’s industry-leading Spatial Audio quality.”

Lamar, a Grammy and Emmy-winning artist and co-founder of pgLang, continues to redefine hip-hop, earning accolades like a Pulitzer Prize for his 2017 album DAMN. and his chart-topping collaborations earlier this year.

Lamar’s Super Bowl performance will be creatively directed by pgLang and produced by DPS, with Roc Nation’s Jesse Collins as executive producer and Hamish Hamilton as director.
