Designer of Marilyn Monroe’s Birthday Dress Says It Was a “Big Mistake” for Kim Kardashian To Wear It

FR1XSj7XwAIss L

Marilyn Monroe’s estate may be happy that Kim Kardashian wore the iconic “Birthday Dress” to the Met Gala, but the designer of the dress, Bob Mackie, is not.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Mackie called wearing the dress “a big mistake.”

“[Marilyn] was a goddess. A crazy goddess, but a goddess. She was just fabulous. Nobody photographs like that. And it was done for her. It was designed for her,” Mackie stated. “Nobody else should be seen in that dress.”

Mackie drew the design for Jean Louis in 1962, who would fashion Monroe for the president of John F. Kennedy. Monroe would die three months later.

Kim Kardashian wore the dress as she strolled the red carpet with her bae, Pete Davidson. Leading up to the big event, the dress was displayed at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum in Orlando, Florida.

“Well, this is Marilyn Monroe’s dress and it is 60 years old and she wore this when she sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to President John F. Kennedy in 1962,” Kardashian confirmed to La La on the red carpet. “I had this idea to try it on and then they came with armed guards and gloves.”

According to PEOPLE, the dress was a bit too small and required an intense diet from Kim Kardashian to wear. “I tried it on, and it didn’t fit me. I said, ‘Give me three weeks.’ I had to lose 16 pounds down today,” Kardashian said.

Kardashian stated the challenge was like getting ready for a movie, and she abandoned carbs and sugars for three weeks. After the conclusion, Kardashian joked at a pizza and donut party at the hotel after the event’s conclusion.

The dress originally cost $12,000 and was created around Monroe, who was sewn into it as it was made. After Kardashian walked the red carpet, she changed into a replica dress for the actual event.

Mandii B and Bridget Kelly, Creators of the Podcast ‘See, the Thing Is,’ Discuss Securing Seven-figure Sales Deal With Gumball

1ba522b4433ed2b8c84e6d4a9b3f52987f5dbf1d17b5575f601c289fab0126b0c6a2449e14a41c9ff95636f611485ffe91a658ebafc03f1555ad10e43144a4a1

The podcast See, the Thing Is has been added to Gumball’s ad network and marketplace. Bridget Kelly, a Grammy-winning singer/songwriter, and Mandii B, a media personality, host the show, which follows the couple as they traverse their 30s and provide mature, honest, and sometimes toxic perspectives on the latest in culture, music, and more. Every week, the ladies are joined on the couch by their “Friends with Benefits,” who are industry and celebrity guest co-hosts who discuss current events and personal staples.

The ladies of See, the Thing Is are continuing the trend of creator-owned IP founded on quality, consistency, and momentum, after being introduced by Joe Budden as the first podcast on his independently-owned network. See, the Thing Is will begin publishing two episodes per week beginning this month, kicking off a new multi-year, seven-figure sales deal with Gumball. UTA facilitated the agreement.

The SOURCE: What have you learned about yourselves throughout the development of See, The Thing Is…

Bridget Kelly: My industry experience prior to the pod required me to be much more PC and diplomatic about things, which I still tend to do. But I’ve learned to trust myself more. Whatever we speak about or share on the pods is OURS. The good, the bad, the embarrassing. Sometimes you can pour into projects that never go anywhere and it can take the wind outta your sails. We hit a lot of speed bumps on the road to get here, but we never wavered. The rewards have really been worth the risks we’ve both taken personally/professionally.

Mandii B: I’ve been in the podcasting space since 2016 and seen the ever changing landscape of the industry before my very eyes. From a business standpoint, I truly learned the importance of operating as a business first and putting personal relationships last. In terms of doing business with friends, it has left me much more hesitant but aware of the legal ways to protect myself.

How do you continue to source content as you are going to two episodes a week?

BK: Mandii and I both love to fuse current events with personalized topics and we’ve created segments that we switch up in each episode. It’s a bit more pressure, but the more concrete the outlines are, the better the execution. Plus we know we can keep things interesting with or without an additional guest.

With more podcast time, are there additional content ideas or segments that you would like to explore?

Mandii: In our original segment “Freshly Squeezed” we showcased new music weekly. Now that we have two episodes per week, we are focusing on sitting down with artists and discussing their new releases and discography. We have incorporated live performances and have recently had the likings of Dreamville’s Lute West, American Idol’s Hollywood Anderson and new R&B artist Aiyanna Lee in our studio. We have also extended “Freshly Squeezed” to different genres and eras of music on our Friday releases.

You ladies have agreed to a seven-figure deal – how did you feel once everything was closed?

BK: You know, nothing is ever really real until they show you the money! In all honesty, though, the offer itself felt incredible. To know a company saw how valuable we were and how much potential growth there was, reaffirmed what Mandii and I already knew about ourselves; We’re great at this! We had recorded less than 100 episodes, but we found our stride and an awesome ad partner to help us carry out our vision.

Mandii: Nothing is official until the ink dries and that first deposit is made. It wasn’t real until then.

What let you know Gumball was the perfect partner for you all?

BK: From jump, they asked US what we were looking for in a network. Some of the other companies we met with, came off like we were interviewing for a job; explaining what we’re all about. The amazing folks at Gumball were genuine fans of the show. They’re just as focused on longevity as we are and want to help us grow, all while allowing us to retain ownership. It was a no brainer for us. Podcasting isn’t as simple as some might think, Gumball understood the technical ins and outs of what we need.

What made Gumball stand out to you on a creator’s level?

Mandii: On a creator level, ownership was very important to us! We also wanted creative control and Gumball came to the table with all of the things that meant a lot to us! We agreed to an exclusive ad partnership while being able to retain ownership of all other podcast revenue streams such as touring, Patreon and merchandise. There were other networks that wanted a percentage of everything; It was giving 360 and it’s unfortunate that contracts are looking a lot like the music industry standards that artists have been complaining about for decades.

How important is it for you to show that two women can bet on themselves and succeed in the podcast space?

BK: I think now more than ever the climate is ripe for creatives brave enough to stand their ground when it comes to ownership and creative control. Not only are the podcasts insanely profitable, but as media personalities, Mandii and I are able to leverage our own brands as well. Mandii has inspired me so much, in all that she’s been able to build for herself, prior to STTI. We balance each other well, no egos at all, and we push each other to keep expanding. Not only are we a great example of friends who work well together, we love reminding other Black women and women of color to take up as much room as their creative gifts allow! There’s enough money for all of us to win in this space

Source Exclusive: Olivia talks new single and album, music and fashion inspiration, and mental health

Olivia

Olivia may be one of the “First Ladies of hip-hop,” but in the span of almost two decades, she’s proven to have one of the most diverse ranges of talent of females in the industry. This week, she debuted her new single, “No Permission,” off her upcoming album, Under Pressure. Olivia sat down with The Source to talk about her upcoming album, film projects, musical and fashion inspirations, and how she manages her mental health.

The Source: What can fans expect different on this album than past albums?

Olivia: They can expect something totally different because the first album that I did was on J Records- and that’s when I first came out, which was when I was like 21 years old. And then on G-Unit, we didn’t do an album. We just did a bunch of singles and features and everything.  They can clearly hear how much my sound has evolved.

I’m a big Brandy fan, so you get a lot of those tones and we have similar tones, but I always listened to her harmonies and stuff. One of my first favorite songs that I recorded,  she was actually in a session with me because she was married to Bert (Robert ‘Big Bert’ Smith) at the time. She walked in and I was stunned because again, I’m like 22 years old and I’m like, ‘oh my God, Brandy is actually in the session.’

She is really one of my inspirations as far as the R&B side, but everybody knows I love hip-hop, so that’s infused in it as well. I have a lot of different blends in there because I don’t like to stick to one genre, but the album totally follows. You can play every track back to back and you get the same vibe.

The Source: You worked with multiple producers on this album. What do you think each of them brought to the album, in addition to your talents?

Olivia: Well of course everybody brings something different, but I have a particular producer named HV, which stands for high volume. His tracks just catch you when you hear them, like the tracks alone, you can tell those are smashes. So you have to automatically write something that matches the smash that he did. I feel like his tracks make me write even better and I try to make sure that I get producers that can come with the same type of energy, the winning type of mentality in the tracks that I want.

The Source: For sure, setting the bar high. So are there any guest artists on your new album?

Olivia: I’m keeping it a secret. I don’t want it to get out yet until we’re ready for the album [release].

The Source: Ok, so your album is called Under Pressure and May is Mental Health Awareness month. How do you deal with pressure, anxiety, stress, all the things that we all go through?

Olivia: One main thing I try to do since I live in Florida now and we’re close to the beach, I try to take long walks. We go for walks at night too in whichever city or state we’re in. Stuff like that kind of calms you down or relaxes you. I love flowers and sometimes I’ll have flowers in the house. They always bring up your energy. Also, simple things, just like sitting by yourself and with everything off, no TV, no music, just try to relax. You know, it really is the simplest things. It sounds like it’s so hard, but the simple things is what will calm you down and bring down your anxiety.

The Source: Well, you already mentioned Brandy, but who are some other musical artists that have inspired you?

Olivia: Joe is also one of my top favorite male, R&B singers. I had the pleasure of meeting him when I first came out. Also, he was down with my production crew, so he used to teach me his runs and I used to watch him and play the guitar. He’s actually why I tried to start learning to play the guitar. That’s probably why I like Lenny Kravitz. Everybody who knows me knows that I’m a big Lenny fan. My genre is all over the place, but there’s always great music. That’s all that matters- as long as it’s a great artist and they make great music.

The Source: If you could collab with any artist (past present, dead, alive, doesn’t matter), who would it be?

Olivia: One would be obviously Lenny Kravitz and the other one would be Luther Vandross. Some of my fans know this story from when I was signed to J Records. Luther was basically my godfather. He took me on my very first shopping spree when I got signed, he would take me to lunch at the Ivy, like every two weeks. I remember going into the studio with him and he has this long trench coat on with one of those big sweaters. We’re in California and it’s like 80 degrees in the studio and his engineer is sweating and I’m like, “Uncle Lou, why is it so hot in here?” He says, “that’s how I keep my vocals so warm.” And then I started doing it too because I realized that it does open up your vocals so much more. Luther and I used to walk down the street and sing so amazing together and harmonies, and I always wanted to do a record with him if I could.

The Source: In addition to being a talented musical artist, as we all know, you’re also something kind of a fashionista. We’ve seen your Instagram, your nails, and you’ve been featured in several fashion magazines. Who are some of your fashion icons or where do you get your fashion inspiration from?

Olivia: That’s a tough one because I like a lot of different things. Sometimes I like to be a really girly girl and then other times I’m very tomboy. I like color, so if I go for the color types, it’ll probably be Missoni, but if I’m going for like the clean lines and for color, it could be Versace also.

I like simple, but still classic. It’s a plethora of things. It depends on the day or on how you feel like dressing.

In addition to her upcoming album, Olivia also stars in the movie “Better than My Last,” an action-suspense film directed by Shawn Baker that is expected to be released nationwide later this year.

“No Permission” is available on most streaming platforms. More information can be found here: https://unitedmasters.com/m/625daffb4269dc24e93a1165.
