Giveon Performs ‘Heartbreak Anniversary’ And ‘For Tonight’ At The 2022 BET Awards

On the heels of his debut album Give Or Take, Giveon graced the 2022 BET Awards stage near the show’s close to perform brief portions of “Heartbreak Anniversary” and “For Tonight” before offering “Lie Again” to its fullest. Despite audio issues, the R&B singer fully emoted through the duration of his heart-bound set.

Though this is Giveon’s first BET Awards performance, he is no stranger to the summer awards show. In 2021, the “Heartbreak Anniversary” singer was awarded the Best New Artist trophy. More generally, the 27-year-old has been nominated for seven Grammys, seven MTV Video Music Awards, one of which he won, and even three NAACP Image Awards.

Giveon released his debut album Give Or Take this past Friday (June 24). The 15-track album was led by singles “For Tonight” and “Lie Again,” following up a nearly two-year hiatus since his last EP, 2020’s When It’s All Said And Done featuring Snoh Aalegra. When It’s All Said And Done followed his highly regarded debut EP Take Time, anchored by “Like I Want You” In his brief hiatus, Giveon appeared on Justin Bieber’s 2021 album Justice on the highly popular “Peaches” also featuring Daniel Caesar and “In The Bible” alongside Lil Durk on Drake’s Certified Lover Boy. In 2020, Drake officially released “Chicago Freestyle,” his first collaboration with the Long Beach artist, as part of Dark Lane Demo Tapes.

GRAMMY-nominated multi-platinum R&B star GIVĒON has returned, introducing fans to his full-length debut album, Give or Take. Accompanying the new release is a video for the new single “Lost Me.”

The song’s upbeat production gets things going as the guitar circles the simmering groove. It ends with a chorus, “I’m not looking for the one, later but for now I’m having fun.”

The new album is 15 tracks in length, bringing Cardo, Boi-1da, Jahaan Sweet, Sevn Thomas, OZ, and more in the fold for production.

GIVĒON will now take the album on the road, covering the nation on his North American headlining tour. GIVĒON will also take the stage at the 2022 BET Awards this weekend.

Giveon Refuses To Take Another Chance At True Love In His Dismissive Video For ‘Lost Me’

Giveon has officially opened a new chapter in his career. The Long Beach singer made a name for himself with projects like Take Time and When It’s All Said And Done, but neither of those were truly his official entrance into the R&B world. That comes with his newly-released debut album Give Or Take. The project was led by two strong singles — “For Tonight” and “Lie Again” — and the entire body of work arrives together with a video for “Lost Me.”

The song presents Giveon’s dismissal of future attempts at love after past ones only left him heartbroken. “We can kiss, we can touch and do it often,” he sings. “But if you’re here lookin’ for love, that’s when you lost me.” The video itself captures Giveon making his stern declarations to a woman as a group of people dance around him in various locations.

In a press release about the video, Giveon also gave some new insight into his new album. “Give Or Take is a collection of reminiscences over the last few years of my life,” he said. “Suddenly having to adapt to a world in which there are so many eyes watching and experiencing a wide spectrum of emotions at once naturally brought these songs to the surface.” He added, “All in all, Give Or Take reflects the love and the loss I’ve had to face as well as the growth and the healing I’ve come to accept.”

Giveon Reveals The Most Important Part Of His Process And How He Feels About Criticism

Giveon’s career took a huge turn for the better in 2020. That year, he opened and closed his heart with the world thanks to a standout collaboration with Drake and two EPs: Take Time and When It’s All Said And Done. The two EPs were later combined into one effort, with the addition of one song, for a body of work titled When It’s All Said And Done… Take Time. That project did not stand as Giveon’s official debut album, as that is set to arrive later this week with Give Or Take. During a recent interview on Apple Music, Giveon revealed what he believes is the most important part of his process towards creating music.

“So my process is I really think the story is the most important part,” he said during his conversation with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “Simply because I think that’s what’s going to make someone go back to it. That’s definitely what’s going to make me play it over and over again. So I like to have the story first. The thing about storytelling for me is you have to make sure it’s digestible as well.” Later on in the interview, Giveon also took a moment to share his feelings about criticism.

“I think I’m in a space where it’s like, as far as criticism, I don’t know, the world is interesting now because me personally, it’s like, if I’m shopping for clothing, if I don’t like this shirt, I don’t like the tailor and the cut, I’m not going to hold it up and be like, ‘Hey everyone in this store, I don’t like this shirt if you were wondering.’ I’m just not going to pick the shirt up,” Giveon said.

He later added, “As far as criticism, it’s art as well. You know? If I’m telling you a story about my heartbreak, it’s at my discretion. You can’t say, tell me how you got your heart broken in other ways. It’s like, no. Just go listen to something else. I don’t even think anything would be bad necessarily. It’s just either it’s for you or it’s not.”

Giveon Announces His Long Awaited Debut Album ‘Give Or Take’ Is Coming This Summer

Though the summertime calls for upbeat jams that will soundtrack brunches and BBQs, Giveon is looking to shake things up on the R&B side with a new announcement. The Long Beach artist took to Twitter and Instagram today (June 2) to announce his debut album Give Or Take will arrive on June 24. His caption thanked fans for their patience as the demand for more music from him has been very high.

The 27-year-old baritone specialist quickly rose in popularity in early 2020 after Drake released their collaboration “Chicago Freestyle.” Despite some comparisons to another Drake collaborator, British singer Sampha, the “Heartbreak Anniversary” singer was quick to set himself apart with his first project, the Grammy-nominated eight-track EP Take Time which came on March 27th. Less than seven months later, Giveon delivered the four-song follow-up When It’s All Said And Done, which included a Snoh Aalegra collaboration on “Last Time,” a linkup they teased with an Instagram Story selfie a few months prior. In a new but likely soon-to-be common move, he combined the two EPs into one compilation When It’s All Said And Done… Take Time and added a new record, “All To Me.”

Leading into Give Or Take, Giveon has released singles “For Tonight” and “Lie Again.” He also appeared on Drake’s Certified Lover Boy and Justin Bieber’s Justice, specifically the Grammy-nominated “Peaches” which also featured Daniel Caesar.

Check out Giveon’s exciting announcement above. Give Or Take is out 06/24 via Epic Records. Pre-save it here.
