The last few years have been a whirlwind for Zaya Wade, and she’s only 15 years old. The teen is the daughter and stepdaughter of Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, respectively, and she’s grown up in the spotlight—albeit not everyone has been supportive. The Wades shared that Zaya was transitioning when she was just 12, and it didn’t take long for critics to jump in. Zaya received a warm welcome from her LGBTQIA peers, especially those within the transgender community, and her family has been firmly standing by her side.
As Zaya gets older, she recognizes the significant impact of her visibility. “It means to me that I’m a microphone,” she told Dazed during an interview for her cover feature. “I am my own person and I have my own experiences, but for me, as a role model, I try to use my personal experience to broadcast the positives and also the negatives in life, because a lot of LGBTQ+ youth go unrecognized in every way. I think I am here to share those experiences: to voice them, but also to enhance them. So the world can know, ‘We are here, we are queer, we are here to stay, and we aren’t going anywhere.’”
Zaya Wade Speaks On Strong Support System
At every turn, Dwyane and Gabrielle have vocalized their avid support of their daughter. The world can be a cruel place, and the Wades have experienced that firsthand. People have written think-pieces about the teen and have called her vicious names because of her transition. The negativity has only strengthened Zaya’s resolve, but it has caused her to remain cautious. She told Dazed she has to filter her social media to keep her mental health intact.
“There are some highs and some lows,” said the model and activist. “I mean, a lot of attention equals a lot more hate, a lot of transphobia, and [there is] a lot of pressure on me, but I’m also able to reach more people. The positives of having such an inclusive platform completely outweigh all of the negativity online, which my support system has enabled me to filter out. It has allowed me to let in the positivity and distribute it to all of the trans people in the world who need a voice and give them a platform to get inspired to live with themselves without being afraid.”
Answering Questions From Young Fans
During her interview, Zaya also answered a few questions written by admirers. One person wanted to know what advice she had for other trans kids. “You’re not alone! There are so many people out there. I wish I knew that as a kid because I felt so isolated, thinking there was no one else like me,” she said. “And the percentage of trans adults versus trans children is such a wide difference. [When you’re] a child at school you’re like, ‘I’m trans, and I don’t see many trans people, so I feel isolated, I feel different from anyone.’”
“But that is not the only community,” Zaya further stated. “There are thousands of communities waiting [for you], and the trans community is forever growing. Even if you can’t have direct contact with them, just seeing their experience is so accessible because of social media. Other people can inspire you.” Check out more from Zaya Wade’s photoshoot with Dazed magazine above.
Boosie has been known for homosexuality rants over the years. However, when asked about his daughter, Iviona Hatch, recently coming out as a lesbian, he said he disagrees with her being “gay” but will love her, regardless. When Gabrielle Union married Dwyane Wade in 2014, she not only stepped into the role of a wife but also a stepparent. The former Miami Heat shooting guard already had three children, whereas Union was brand new to motherhood. In 2008, the same year that the couple embarked on a relationship, Wade gained custody over his children. Although the Being Mary Jane actress has spent over a decade watching Zaya, Zaire, and Zavier grow up, she still struggles with being labeled as a “stepparent.”
Union reflected on her role with Wade’s children in her HelloBeautiful cover story this month (February). During the interview, she explained the confusion she faced upon embarking on this new journey. “When I became a stepmom, I was like, ‘I don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing,’” the actress said. She continued to question whether she should “be a friend” to the kids, or whether she should assume a more maternal role. Eventually, Union concluded that she couldn’t abide by typical labels. “I had to figure out how to be consistent, nurturing, and compassionate, and love each of them,” she reflected. “I knew that one size fits all was not gonna work.”
Union and Wade’s Big, Blended Family
The Truth be Told star also spoke out about her transition to becoming a stepmom with podcast host Glennon Doyle. She reflected on the importance of consistency, especially when presenting herself to the children. Union explained, “whatever personality I was trying on that day, or whoever I was, I just needed to be consistent so they can get used to me.”
They’ve already gone through so much upheaval, moving states away, not knowing anyone. Having gone through a divorce, I knew I needed to be consistent.” Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of harboring a quality relationship with her stepchildren. “I knew that when I married him, I was married to them,” she said.
The A-List couple welcomed Kaavia to their blended family in 2018 via surrogacy. Together, Union and Wade the children’s book Shady Baby in 2021. The 50-year-old had also previously written Welcome to the Party, which honors nontraditional families. For all things related to hip hop and pop culture, check back with HNHH later.
Gabrielle Union says that she’d want Ryan Destiny or Coco Jones to play her in a biopic about her life. If the story were to take place at an older age, she’d go with Ashanti or Janet Jackson. Union discussed the hypothetical casting during a recent interview with Hello Beautiful. For the piece, Union spoke with the creator of the MeToo movement, Tarana Burke.
“I think young me would be somewhere between Ryan Destiny, Coco Jones,” Gabrielle Union said when asked for a casting. “And then older me? I’d say Janet. Maybe Ashanti could play me in my 30s, early 40s—and then Miss Janet.”
Gabrielle Union’s “Hello Beautiful” Cover
The interview comes amid Union’s appearance in season three of Apple TV+’s true crime drama Truth Be Told. The iconic actress plays Eva, a high school principal driven by raising awareness for missing Black girls in her community. Speaking with the outlet, Union explained that she was looking to take on more light-hearted roles at the time she was cast. However, she says that she trusts Octavia Spencer, who stars in the series, and decided to take on the role for her.
“After The Inspection tapped into darkness in me, I wasn’t prepared to confront it (in a healthy way). I was still reeling and unwinding from that. I was like, ‘I can’t do any more darkness, but I can coast through some comedies, so please let’s concentrate on comedies for 2022,’” Union recalled.
She continued: “My team was like, ‘I know you want to concentrate on comedies but we have this offer to do season three of Truth Be Told with Octavia. We know you guys are friends, but we just think this subject matter is something you might be interested in.’ Octavia must have hit me right after that, and we talked a bit. We have been trying to work together again for over 20 years. I trust her in a way that I don’t trust most people in this town in our industry, which is saying a lot. So if I was gonna do it, it would need to be with someone I trust, like Octavia.”
As much as it is about sports, it’s also a party. During the NBA All-Star Game, Lindsay Vonn was spotted pouring up Gabrielle Union a shot of Lobos 1707’s Extra Anejo from her Lobos branded tequila satchel courtside at tonight’s NBA All-Star Game.
Lindsey Vonn is in a relationship with Diego Osorio, the Founder and CCO of Lobos 1707 Tequila & Mezcal. Lobos 1707 is also known for its iconic group of investors, which includes legendary athlete and cultural icon, LeBron James, actor and businessman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, entertainer and businesswoman, Paris Hilton, and many more.
If there’s one media personality who’s bound to get our favourite celebrities spilling some tea, it’s Jason Lee. Over the years, the self-proclaimed “culture critic” has become close friends with some of the biggest names in the industry. Now that he’s got a new podcast of his own with REVOLT, he’s been tapping several of them to join him and dish about their personal lives.
The most recent episode arrived on DSPs earlier this week. It finds the host chatting with reality starlet Claudia Jordan and comedian Luenell. Throughout the two-hour-long episode, they touch on topics like locking lips with Donald Trump and the 49-year-old’s potential return to the Real Housewives of Atlanta.
Of course, some juicier topics came up in conversation too, such as the “mean girls” of Black Hollywood. “Gabrielle Union, if you’re watching this, I think you should come on the show and talk about it,” the former pageant queen addressed the Bring It On actress through the camera. Lee then points out that it’s unlikely we’ll see the Nebraska native sit in the hot seat and discuss past drama.
As the conversation continues, both Jordan and Luenell reveal that they’ve had past situations with Union that were never resolved. “It was so insignificant to her, that she would never even remember it,” the latter of the two guests shared. “But it was really f*cked up to me… Think like a man, why don’t you? That’s all Imma say.”
Lee then lists the names of a few prominent figures in Black Hollywood. “Terrence J? La La? Taraji?” all of them earning a “No” response from Luenell. “Hollywood’s not a friendly place sometimes,” Jordan interjects, leading to a debate about the members of the elite’s inner clique. According to the 63-year-old, her younger friend fits in with them because she’s conventionally attractive, whereas she’s left on the “outskirts” due to her unique appearance.
Throughout all of this, the Deal or No Deal model maintains that even with her looks, the inner circle doesn’t f*ck with her. However, she specifically showed love to La La and Taraji P. Henson, noting that there’s no shade between them. Rather, she feels animosity coming from Union, but didn’t want to specifically address the drama from decades ago.
Since The Jason Lee Podcast made its big debut last month, the host has been joined by guests like Cardi B, Blueface and Chrisean Rock. Additionally, he sat down with La La Anthony and Da’Vinchi. As expected, Lee asks plenty of juicy questions, and his co-stars don’t hesitate to spill major tea. For her part, the Invasion of Privacy rapper revealed where she was when finding out about Takeoff’s tragic passing.
During their episode, the Crazy In Love couple dished about Rock’s recent pregnancy announcement and previously leaked sex tape. Read what the BMF actors told Lee during their time on the show here. Finally, listen to Claudia Jordan and Luenell’s full chat below.
Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have shared photos of their daughter, Zaya, prior to her winter formal. The 15-year-old rocked a sparkling white gown for the high school dance.
“Supporting each other for life’s big moments is key. All the nerves, all the anxiety, all the fear… With loved ones by your side, no matter the challenge, we 10 toes down. Always,” Union, who is Zaya’s stepmother, captioned the family’s post.
As for Zaya’s birth mother, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, she’s been locked in a legal battle with the family for months. Funches-Wade claims that Wade forced their daughter to undergo gender reassignment surgery for financial gain.
“Since this must be the new way of parenting, I guess I have to address these allegations here, which is a damn shame,” he wrote, before adding, “While I’m on a life-changing trip in our motherland, Africa, I’ve received a social media post about me forcing out 15 year old child to be someone she’s not and to do something against her will. There are serious and harmful allegations that have hurt our children.”
Appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in 2020, Wade discussed his support for his daughter’s gender identity as well as being an ally to the LBGTQ+ community.
“We take our roles and our responsibility as parents very seriously,” Wade said at the time. “When a child comes home with a question, when a child comes home with an issue, when a child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information that we can, the best feedback that we can — and that doesn’t change because sexuality’s now involved in it.”

A recent revelation made by Gabrielle Union ruffled a few feathers. The actress appeared on the Armchair Expert podcast, where she spoke about her first marriage to Chris Howard. She said it was “such a stupid relationship that should never have gotten out of the dating phase.”
“I definitely was not getting Wife of the Year Awards,” Union added. “In our first marriage, neither one of us felt like the marriage should get in the way of our dating.” Union also stated, “I felt that that’s what comes, the spoils of riches. Like my dad before me, whoever has the most gets to do whatever the hell they want, is what I thought.”
Further, Union and Howard tried to work things out and even went to counseling. However, while seeking therapy, they realized they were better off separate.
After her comments made their way to the internet, Union was criticized—even earning a reaction from 50 Cent. Entertainment Tonight also spoke with the actress about her controversy, and she dismissed critics.
“If your gonna get your panties in a twist about something I’ve been talking about since 2005 — in not one but two New York Times best-selling books — at least listen to the whole thing,” she said as she rolled her eyes. “Just so you know where your anger actually is.”
“I think people really felt anger that a woman would dare be just as dysfunctional as a man,” Union quipped. “Because that’s what I called it. And stupid!”
D.L. Hughley recently sat down for a lengthy interview with none other than DJ Vlad.
In typical VLADTV fashion, the 59-year-old certainly ends up opening up about a number of controversial topics.
“I think two things can exist; I think that I can respect the love and protection that they feel [as parents]. I think loving your child without recriminations is required of us. It’s also disingenuous to believe that people aren’t gonna have an opinion to that. If you make these things public, people there are people [who are] gonna have public assessments of it, so I can’t fault you for loving your child and protecting them and being proud of them, and equally, I can’t fault people for having an opinion” says the actor in a clip of their talk.
“Listen, to me, you’re not grown until you leave my house. If you’re still going to a pediatrician, if you need my permission to go to a movie, then I’m going to have a say in what happens. If you believe that isn’t how you want to run your family, I have no choice but to respect that,” he continues afterwards.
Of course, this all stems from Gabrielle Union coming to the defense of her stepdaughter, Zaya Wade. In 2020, the 15-year-old publicly came out as transgender.
In a resurfacing clip of an interview that the actress did with Jemele Hill, she calls out Boosie Badazz for continuously speaking on Zaya. “He’s so pre-occupied. It’s almost like, thou doth protest too much, Little Boos. You got a lot of d*ck on your mind,” says the She’s All That actress.
In response, the “Set It Off” rapper took to his Twitter account. “LOL!! THE WHOLE WORLD KNOW I LOVE WOMEN N THE WORLD KNOW YOUR HUSBAND LOVE D*CK!! I HOPE U DONT THINK BLACKS LOOK AT YALL LIKE A POWER COUPLE THEY DONT!! I HAD REFUSED TO TALK ABOUT YALL IN INTERVIEWS N HEAR YOU GO!!” he explicitly writes in a tweet from December.
