J. Cole Had Mixed Feelings About His Drake Collab ‘First Person Shooter’ Being His First No. 1 And Explained Why

J. Cole recently appeared on Lil Yachty’s A Safe Place podcast, where he opened up about how it felt getting his first No. 1. The achievement came from his “First Person Shooter” collaboration with Drake reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

“If it would’ve went No. 2 it wouldn’t have mattered,” J. Cole said. “I wouldn’t have felt no way. If the other song would’ve went No. 1, it’s like, bruh, I’m cool.”

“If that other song would’ve went No. 1, n****, I’m still grateful I’m a part of it,” he added, according to Vibe. “I wasn’t at home like, ‘Come on y’all! Pick up the streams, man! We gotta beat this motherf*cker’ Yeat! Come on!’… What got ‘First Person Shooter’ to No. 1 was me and [Drake’s] fans still buy iTunes singles… the digital actual sales of the song. I don’t know who’s still buying them b*tches but, you know, appreciate y’all.”

However, he also felt like maybe he wished it was his own song, rather than just a feature on a track from Drake’s For All The Dogs album. “I’d almost feel better not having my first No. 1 being off a Drake alley-oop, you know what I mean?” J. Cole explained.

By Drake reaching No. 1 as well with his song, he now ties Michael Jackson’s record for the most hit songs at 13.

SZA & Drake’s ‘Slime You Out’ Collaboration Might’ve Been Sabotaged, Or So The Singer Questioned

Apparently, Nicki Minaj isn’t the only woman in music harboring resentment toward Drake over his latest solo album, For All The Dogs. Minaj’s long-awaited and frequently teased track with her Young Money alum didn’t make the final tracklist, so she dropped her own freestyle over a song that did appear. On the other hand, SZA’s collaboration with Drake did.

However, yesterday (October 30), in a sit-down with the Wall Street Journal, SZA questioned if Drake was back up to his Mean Girls’ Regina George-ish ways. When discussing “Slime You Out” with journalist Hunter Harris, SZA theorized that Drake might’ve sabotaged her.

“I just handed in the first draft to Drake, and he’s putting it on his album. I’m scared because I handed in the second vocals, and he didn’t use that. And now I’m like, ‘Are you trying to sabotage me?’ I know that’s not true. I literally know that’s not true, but that’s how bad I feel about my first draft. When things come from an effortless space, I almost can’t enjoy it,” said SZA.

Although she was sure to clarify that she was overthinking the scenario, fans online have verbalized their disappointment in the track. That certainly could’ve triggered SZA’s perfectionism. In June, SZA admitted to “punking out” of a guest appearance on Lil Tjay’s “Calling My Phone Remix” because she didn’t feel she could add anything to the record.

SZA Worried Drake Was Trying To “Sabotage” Her With “Slime You Out”

SZA says that she was worried Drake was trying to “sabotage” her when he put out their collaboration, “Slime You Out.” Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, She explained that the Toronto rapper accepted her first draft of her contribution, which she found suspicious. Drake dropped the song as the lead single from his eighth studio album, For All the Dogs, in September.

“If you accept my first draft,” SZA said, “I won’t trust you.” She then used her collaboration on Drake’s single, “Slime You Out,” as an example. “I just handed in the first draft to Drake, and he’s putting it on his album,” she stated. “I’m scared because I handed in second vocals and he didn’t use that. And now I’m like, ‘Are you trying to sabotage me?’ I know that’s not true. I literally know that’s not true, but that’s how bad I feel about my first draft. When things come from an effortless space, I almost can’t enjoy it.”

Elsewhere in the interview, SZA reflected on the making of her song, “Kill Bill,” admitting that it “took no thought.” “The songs that I care so much about, that I tried so hard on, people be like, ‘That’s nice,’” SZA told the publication. “But the sh*t that took no thought and came out of my mouth in five seconds? ‘Girl, that’s the one.’”

SZA Works With Drake For “Slime You Out”

SZA included “Kill Bill” as a single from her second studio album, SOS, in 2022. The lyrics see SZA consider a fantasy to kill an ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend out of jealousy. The track has stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for over 40 weeks. Be on the lookout for further updates on SZA and Drake on HotNewHipHop.

How To Buy Drake’s ‘For All The Dogs’ Varsity Jacket

For all of Drake’s accomplishments, his son Adonis is already off to a strong start at bypassing him at just six years old. After Adonis drew the cover of Drake’s new album, For All The Dogs, he later appeared on the album, stealing the show from his famous dad, then wound up dropping a completely separate solo track. Now, Adonis’ artwork will adorn a limited-edition varsity jacket commemorating the album’s success, making him basically a fashion designer too.

The October’s Very Own varsity jacket is available for pre-order now in sizes XS to XXXL for $998. The jacket follows Drake’s tradition of getting custom jackets made to commemorate special occasions like the Raptors winning the NBA championship in 2019. The tradition goes back to 2011, when his OVO jackets went for “just” $500, and includes collaborations with the University Of Toronto. Of course, this jacket will probably arrive far too late for you to try to dress up as Drake for Halloween this year, but hey, at $1000, you’ll probably want to get as many wears out of the thing as you possibly can, right?

You can find out more about the jacket — and OVO’s recent collaboration with the Toronto Maple Leafs — at the brand’s official website.

“What the fuck is this?” Yachty asked. “Since when did Nike start doing shit like this? I ain’t never seen Nike do no shit like this.”

Earlier this month, Drake dropped off another video from For All The Dogs, “Another Late Night,” directed by Cole Bennett. The video for Lil Yachty-assisted single takes the rapping best friends out in the streets for an illuminated night of jigging. Does Drake Have ‘For All The Dogs’ Merch?

A few weeks following the release of Drake‘s new album, For All The Dogs, fans were wondering if there’d be any merch. Thankfully, the rapper recently dropped a new line of items tied to the record.

Here’s what to know about the new merch collection.

In total, there are several new shirts and a sweatshirt. To start, one of the shirts simply has the album cover’s design and is $45.

For fans who love the songs “Bahamas Promises” and “7969 Santa,” there are shirts themed to both of those songs. One has an island theme that just reads “Bahamas.” The other has the numbers written in neon lettering.

Rounding out the new shirts, there is a top called the “Heavenly Father tee” that has a graphic of Drake’s son, Adonis, wearing a pair of headphones and sitting next to a dog. The back of it reads “All My Dogs Are Going To Heaven.” These cost $65.

Finally, Drake dropped a special For All The Dogs-themed hoodie that is blue. Around it, various graphic designs are screen and puff-printed on, including the front depicting two angels, and more items. Given that it likely took longer, this costs $225 but is sold out at the moment.

Does J. Cole Have A No. 1 Record?

With the release of Drake’s long-awaited album For All The Dogs, he helped his friend and infrequent collaborator J. Cole reach a new career milestone. Their song from the album, “First Person Shooter,” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart earlier this month, giving Drake a history-making 13 chart-topping hits.

However, it may surprise some longtime listeners of the two blog rap icons that it’s only J. Cole’s first No. 1 on the Hot 100. Despite entering the public consciousness around the same time as Drake, J. Cole had yet to reach the pinnacle of the hot singles chart. The closest he’d ever come to date was No. 2, twice: once in 2021 with his The Off Season single “My Life” featuring Morray, and again earlier this year as a feature on Lil Durk’s “All My Life.” Prior to those peaks, his Revenge Of The Dreamers III single “Middle Child” topped out at No. 4.

Meanwhile, Cole has fared better on the hip-hop-centric charts. All of the above-mentioned songs reached No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, with the exception of “Middle Child,” which peaked at No. 2.

Regardless of how long it took Cole to reach this high watermark, it’s an accomplishment that no one can take away — and that may make it easier to return, if prior chart histories of acts like Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Cardi B, and Doja Cat are anything to judge by. He should be getting the chance to do so soon; he’s been teasing his album The Fall-Off for some time, and many fans believe it’s due sometime next year.

Drake Releases New Line Of “For All The Dogs Merch”

Drake’s feature-packed new album For All The Dogs has been a smash commercial hit. It had tremendous first-week sales tallying over 400k copies. The project racked up over 160k sales in its second week on the charts, good enough for number two this week. Early projections for next week see the album holding off debuts from Blink-182 and The Rolling Stones to return to the number-one spot for a second week.

Now, Drake is capitalizing on the album’s appeal with some new merch. Earlier today he shared six new pieces of For All The Dogs merch. Included in the drop are 5 new shirts and a hoodie. Among the shirts is a simple one sporting only the album cover of the record. It also featured shirts themed around songs from the album like “7969 Santa” and “Bahamas Promises.” The prices range from $45 for the simple t-shirt all the way up to $225 for the special FATD hoodie. For an artist so popular the volume of merch is expected to move quickly and fans are already rushing to get their orders in. Check out all of the pieces below.

Drake’s New Album Merch

Earlier this week, Drake celebrated his 37th birthday. At a party he threw the rapper was somehow able to pull off getting Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul on board to serve drinks. Some artists like Nicki Minaj celebrated by sharing throwback pics of the two together. Others, lil Lil Yachty took a different approach.

The rapper, who has a notoriously funny relationship with Drake, took the opportunity to troll him. He took to his Instagram story to tease the release of a video he apparently has of Drizzy eating a glizzy. Thankfully for Drake, the actual video never emerged and it seems like Yachty was just giving him a hard time online to celebrate his big day. Drake’s “For All The Dogs” Sells 161k In Week Two

After debuting at the number one spot on the Billboard 200 last week, Drake’s new album For All The Dogs only slipped one spot in week two. It put up over 400k units in its first week which lapped the field, tallying almost as much as the rest of the top 10 combined. It’s sales figures continued to be impressive in week two, racking up 161k in total sales. That also places among the top 10 biggest sales weeks of any rap album in 2023 and would normally be enough to grab the top spot.

The album keeping Drake off the top of the Billboard 200 for a second week is Bad Bunny’s Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va A Pasar Manana which racked up more than 200k sales in its first week. Given that Bad Bunny also had one of the biggest-selling albums of 2022, it’s no surprise to see him debut so high. The rest of the top 5 is also bustling with debuts. K-pop group Tomorrow X Together debuted their new mini-album The Name Chapter: Freefall at number 3 on the charts. Meanwhile coming at number 5 is Offset with his new project Set It Off. In between them is country singer Zach Bryan’s self-titled album which has now spent a full two months in the top 10.

Drake’s Impressive Second Week Sales

While Drake’s numbers are impressive, his spot on the chart is a matter of circumstances. Bad Bunny’s album did happen to debut very high this week. But For All The Dogs numbers are still on pace with its biggest contemporary from this year, Travis Scott’s UTOPIA. That album ended up leading the Billboard 200 for the entire first month it appeared on the chart. UTOPIA still sits at number 13 in its 12th week.

Drake charted the entire tracklist of the album in the Hot 100 during its first week. Similarly, his second week on the Hot 100 has also been impressive. Despite 21 new Bad Bunny songs making their debut, 19 songs from For All The Dogs still remain. What do you think of For All The Dogs selling 161k in its second week? Let us know in the comment section below.

Nicki Minaj, Drake & Chief Keef’s ‘For All The Barbz’ Is The Ultimate ‘For All The Dogs’ Album Snub Response

After months of teasing their long-awaited collaboration, Drake and Nicki Minaj’s unreleased track did not make For All The Dogs. However, the Queen Radio host’s new freestyle track, “All The Barbz,” is the ultimate response for the notable album cameo snub. On the record, Minaj reclaimed her Young Money Record comrade’s “All The Parties” to hold fans over before the release of her forthcoming album, Pink Friday 2.

She kept Drake and Chief Keef’s contributions to demonstrate how sorely her bars were missed in the body of work. For Minaj’s verse, she took a moment to address the subtle jabs she sent seemingly and received during the 2023 VMAs (where she served as a host and featured performer).

“VMAs was a family reunion / First time in a while I seen all of my sons / Keep it a hundred, keep it in a trust / If I lose ninety-nine, I still keep it a buck / I don’t hear you hoes / I make the movies, I give you bitches cameos / Here we go, he tryna make honey nut like Cheerios,” spit Minaj seeming to refer to foes Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and Latto some would include Doja Cat in the mix as well.

That would seem to be supported by another fairly topical line: “I get these b*tches scramblin’ when I throw the bait / One sub kill five b*tches, OceanGate.”

Listen to Nicki Minaj’s “For All The Barbz” above.

Pink Friday 2 is due on 11/17 via Republic Records. Find more information here.
