SHOWTIME Honors 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop with Premiere of ‘ALL UP IN THE BIZ’: A Celebratory Documentary on Biz Markie

ALL UP IN THE BIZ

SHOWTIME has announced the premiere of the documentary feature ALL UP IN THE BIZ, directed by Sacha Jenkins, on Friday, August 11.

The film, which premiered at Tribeca Festival last month, explores the life and career of late rapper Biz Markie, best known for his hit song “Just a Friend.” Combining never-before-seen footage, interviews, musical interludes, animation, and puppetry, ALL UP IN THE BIZ offers a heartwarming portrait of Biz Markie’s journey in the world of hip-hop. The documentary showcases his impact on the genre and features interviews with prominent figures such as Fat Joe, Nick Cannon, and Tracy Morgan. Biz Markie, also known as “The Clown Prince of Hip Hop,” was a beatbox pioneer who inspired rap icons like Rakim and Big Daddy Kane.

Despite facing challenges, including a groundbreaking sampling lawsuit, Biz Markie’s contributions to hip hop earned him recognition as a true embodiment of the genre. ALL UP IN THE BIZ delves into his extraordinary tale, from humble beginnings to pop culture ubiquity, highlighting his influence on the culture and his ability to shape his own destiny.

“Biz Markie is the pure essence of hip hop. He believed in, he lived it, he harnessed its powers,” said Jenkins. “Most people don’t know that he used those powers to power up some of the culture’s greatest poets and then some. I was fortunate to meet with Biz when he was alive so to have the opportunity to bring him back to life now that he isn’t here…it’s a special film

The film is directed, co-written, and executive produced by Sacha Jenkins, who previously worked on notable projects like “WU-TANG CLAN: OF MICS AND MEN” and “Louis Armstrong’s Black and Blues.”

‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ Nets $56 Million in Opening Weekend

'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One' Nets $56 Million in Opening Weekend

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is No. 1 in the domestic weekend box office but only brought in a total of $56.2 million. According to Variety, the film took $300 million to make and that was before marketing.

The film’s hopeful opening weekend numbers were north of $60 million, but the three day total falls short. It’s a bit of hope for the franchise as it had a Wednesday opening date, nesting $80 million in the initial five days. The film also has hope in the 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which can result in staying power for the film.

The sequel to the film is believed to be less expensive since it does not have to operate with the start and stop hudles of the COVId-19 pandemic.

You can see the film’s trailer below.

Paramount+ Announces New Documentary 'MIXTAPE' Feat. Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, DJ Drama & More

Paramount+ has announced the premiere of MIXTAPE, a new documentary that delves into the influential role of mixtapes in launching hip-hop into mainstream culture. The film will exclusively debut on the streaming service on August 1 in the U.S. and Canada, and on August 2 in the U.K., Australia, Latin America, and Brazil, with additional international markets to follow later in the year.

MIXTAPE tells the story of how hip hop persevered and thrived through mixtapes, with DJs serving as tastemakers and creators of the genre’s sound. The documentary highlights the cultural significance of mixtapes as currency and indicators of being “in the know.”

“Hip-Hop is 50 years old and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate its journey and contextualize its evolution than through the story of the mixtape. Every voice in this film played a critical role, especially the DJs who, as KRS-ONE says beautifully in the film, risked everything to ‘bring us the music’,” said Omar Acosta, director of MIXTAPE.

Producer Tony Touch added, “It’s an honor to be involved in this film and to help tell the real story of the mixtape, its origins, its impact, and its ongoing relevance for the culture.”

The MIXTAPE features interviews with a star-studded lineup of artists and industry figures, including 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky, DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne, Mike Tyson, and more. Produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, Mercury Studios, and Saboteur Media in association with Def Jam Recordings, “MIXTAPE” is directed by Omar Acosta and produced by David Kennedy, Tony Touch, Nick Quested, and Daniel Seliger. The official soundtrack, titled “The Def Tape,” is set to be released in August via Def Jam Recordings.

Tiffany Haddish could star in a Wedding Crashers sequel because she has the experience. In an interview with PEOPLE, Haddish revealed that she used to crash weddings when she was homeless in an attempt to secure a meal.

“I’ve crashed weddings before, given a speech and didn’t know anybody there,” Haddish said. “That’s when I was homeless and hungry.”

She revealed she commonly practiced the crash at weddings at a hotel in L.A.’s Westchester neighborhood. She would leave after she had some food and liquor.

“I would have two or three drinks and then I would grab the microphone and be like, ‘I just want to say that you are the most beautiful couple,’” Haddish added. “Everybody would be looking at me like, ‘Who is this black girl at our wedding?’”

John Singleton’s Daughter Fighting Grandmother In Court Over Allowance

Screen Shot 2023 07 13 at 10.12.53 AM

Four years ago director John Singleton passed away after suffering a stroke. The 51-year-old director had been in a coma after suffering a stroke while at a Los Angeles hospital for another health concern. He died peacefully and surrounded by friends, his family said in a statement shared by his publicist.

Now John’s daughter Cleopatra is fighting in court with his mother after getting cut off of $2700 school allowance following her graduation arguing she is still enrolled in online school.

Radar Online reports:

According to court documents obtained by RadarOnline.com, Cleopatra, one of John’s 7 children, asked the court to shut down the late director’s mom Shelia Ward.

As we first reported, Shelia, who has been in charge of John’s estate since his 2019 death, recently asked the court to allow her to stop paying Cleopatra $2,700 per month.

The support was initially approved by the court in December 2019. The money was to be used by Cleopatra for support because she was a “full-time student who did not have other sources of income.”

Sheila said Cleopatra graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana in May 2021 but was still being paid. She asked that Cleopatra’s final payout from John’s estate be reduced by the amount she was paid to her after the date of graduation from Xaiver University.

Now, Cleopatra said her grandmother’s request should be shut down because she’s currently enrolled in an online school.

Further, Cleopatra said Sheila’s final accounting report submitted to the court should not be approved. She claimed it contained “woefully inaccurate” information and failed to include documentary proof for certain transactions.

A judge has yet to rule.

Singleton, who was also a screenwriter and producer, made history in 1992 when he became the first black director nominated for an Academy Award and, at 23, the youngest nominee in that category for the 1991 drama “Boyz n the Hood,” his directorial debut. The critically acclaimed film follows the lives of three teenage boys in Los Angeles and addresses questions of race, violence and relationships.

Ice Cube Believes His Vaccination Refusal for $9 Million Movie Was Leaked ‘To Put Pressure On Him’

Ice Cube ride along

Rapper Ice Cube recently shared the details of why he passed up on a $9 million role in a movie because he wasn’t vaccinated.
Ice Cube appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast this week and confirmed that he was set to co-star in Sony’s Oh Hell No back in 2020 but confessed he didn’t know how the story broke in the first place. He claimed he “didn’t go out telling everybody what happened” and suspected the story got leaked to put pressure on him.

“I thought it was chicken sh**,” Ice Cube told Joe Rogan Thursday. “It’s like what happened to the HIPAA laws you know?”

Originally, the Hollywood Reporter leaked the story, but it still didn’t convince the rapper to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

“They try to, you know, put my business in the street, put pressure on me, everybody around me tell me how stupid I am so I can go get vaxxed and say you know: ‘Please let me do the movie,’” Ice Cube said. “You know that was never gonna happen. I don’t care if it was 20 million. That was never gonna happen.”

Rogan, who has also publicly shared his own skepticism surrounding the vaccine, agreed with the rapper that it was the right decision.

“And if you got injured from that vaccine you would have paid that 20 million to be healthy again,” Rogan said.

In related news, Moderna revealed its plans in March to price its COVID-19 vaccines between $110 to $130 per dose, almost five-fold more than the $26 per dose the company has charged the government since last July.

Hollywood Cuts DEI Execs Following Affirmative Action Ruling

women

Last week the U.S. Supreme Court stuck down Affirmative Action in higher education when they reversed affirmative action after 62 years. The Supreme  set new limits on affirmative action programs in cases involving whether public and private colleges and universities can continue to use race as one factor among many in student admissions. After decades of fighting for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in films and television, both behind and in front of the camera, Hollywood is flipping the script.

In similar but unrelated news, four Diversity, Equity and Inclusion officers in Hollywood were fired the very next day.

Actress Yvette Nicole Brown took to her Instagram page and wrote:

In ONE day, FOUR talented, smart Black women lost their jobs — or “left on their own accord” in the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion space.

A day after #AffirmativeAction was gutted by the compromised and BOUGHT six GOP-chosen “Justices” #SupremeCourt

Actress Niecy Nash supported and reposted along with several others.
