[WATCH] The Tri-State Area May Be Lifting Vaccine And Mask Mandates As Early As Next Week

After nearly two years of wearing face coverings everywhere in our daily life, the governors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are loosening the last mandated rules around masks. New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Sunday that a dramatic drop in coronavirus infections could lead to the lifting of vaccine mandates on restaurants, bars and theaters as soon as March 7.

Statewide indoor school mask mandates have dropped in Connecticut and are poised to drop in New York and New Jersey on Wednesday and Monday, respectively, as officials remove the last longstanding emblem of the pandemic.

New York City has said it plans to lift the mask mandate for the nation’s largest public school system come Monday, March 7, as well as the Key2NYC vaccine mandate that requires customers to show proof of vaccination to enter indoor spaces. The mandate requiring vaccination for employees will stay for now.

The developments follow recently updated CDC guidance essentially saying most people don’t need to wear face masks in indoor public settings unless there’s a high level of severe disease. The health agency’s new benchmarks for assessing that threat level currently mean more than 70% of the U.S. population can go maskless.

Here are a list of places you will still be required to wear a mask:
Mass transit: The feds require masks on planes and trains (as well as in airports and transit stations), while NYC and NJ transit operators mandate masks on trains, buses and taxes/rideshare services
Broadway theaters: Masks are required through April 30, at least
Healthcare facilities like hospitals and nursing homes as well as adult care centers
Correctional facilities
Homeless shelters
Individual businesses that choose to mandate masks. State law allows local municipalities to opt for stricter standards around COVID if they so choose.
Will you be sending your child to school without a mask?

The mayor’s comments came a day after he released a statement saying the city is looking at March 7th to lift vaccination requirements for indoor dining, fitness centers and entertainment venues.

“I can’t wait to get it done,” Adams said. “I take my hat off to New Yorkers — through masks, vaccines, through social distancing, we were hit with the uncertainty, the fear of COVID. I’m really proud of how we responded as New Yorkers. And every morning I meet with my health professionals. Because I always stated I’m going to follow the science. I’m not going to get ahead of the science, because I’m ready to get ahead of all of this and get back to a level of normalcy.”

“But they’re giving us clear instructions, they’ve given us benchmarks, we’re going to follow those benchmarks. But I look forward in the next few weeks of going through a real transformation — that I don’t have to wonder what you look like … We’re going to get the city back up and operating. And we’re going to be rolling out some things in the next day or so on how we’re going to carry that out.”

According to a report from Vice. a 15-year-old Mexican girl accidentally shot and killed herself while trying to film herself holding a 9mm fully automatic UZI sub machine gun for a TikTok video.

The girl, Yasmin Esmeralda, was visiting her grandmother’s house in Guasave, Sinaloa when she asked her younger brother to record her holding the weapon. A single accidental shot went of while she held the weapon, killing the 15-year-old.

Sinaloa’s state prosecutor Sara Bruna Quinonez Estrada said to Vice, “The fact that there were weapons in the house, that weren’t controlled, is the responsibility of the adults who knew there were children in the house. That she chose to record a clip [in that way] shows that our youth is immersed in [drug cartel] culture. It’s what they hear about at all hours.”
