Happy Birthday To Hip Hop Pioneer Grandmaster Flash!

Screen Shot 2023 01 01 at 11.59.31 AM

On this date in 1958, a man who will forever reform the stance of the turntable was born; Joseph Saddler best known as Grandmaster Flash.

Amidst the infancy of hip-hop culture, Grandmaster Flash dominated the disc jockey scene of the North Bronx as he once was the DJ for big-time house rockers Kurtis Blow and Lovebug Starski in the mid-70s. Flash’s DJ sets became notorious for shaking crowds and it was evident he was influenced by preceding disco DJs in the likes of Grandmaster Flowers and Pete DJ Jones. Not only was Flash intrigued by the identity of the disc jockey through New York City disco DJ legends, but also, by the “hip-hopper” house rockers of his time, who reigned the opposing regions of the boogie down, DJ Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa.

The DJ is the first star to brew out of hip-hop culture. With knowledge of the crowd’s desire to get down to the drum break known in hip-hop culture as the break beat (A type of instrumental that extends the dance part of the record), Saddler’s innovative nature caused him to develop a strategy that would deem his influence on the genre, unmatched and unquestioned, the quick-mix theory. The quick-mix theory was Flash’s way of endlessly playing the drum break, by using two turntables and two copies of the same record, playing the break on one record while setting the destined part on the other, and with use of a mixer, he switched to the other turntable, giving birth to an easier way to extend the break, which is currently known as the art of looping. The quick-mix-theory was heralded as a next level tactic that stemmed from DJ Kool Herc’s groundbreaking “Merry Go Round Technique.”

The signature success of the quick mix theory leads to his most famed act as the DJ for Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, whose 1982 hit “The Message” embodied the essence of New York City and brought global prominence to the once “thought-to-be-faddy” hip-hop genre. “The Message” is known to be a track that document’s Flash’s mastery on the turntable and is nonetheless recognized as one of the greatest songs of hip-hop history. The song is responsible for refining the content landscape of the rapping trend by bringing to light social commentary from the black youth of the Bronx, exposing the daily trials and tribulations caused by historically sanctioned methods of oppression.

Happy born day Flash! Salute to you on your special day and wishingyou many more!

Trina Confirms Yolanda Adams Was Not In 1995 Freaknik Picture

Screen Shot 2022 12 30 at 8.31.43 AM

After a photo from the 1995 Annual Freaknik Festival in Atlanta went viral, names of female artists were thrown around as being in the picture, but the poses and the names mentioned did not match up. One name in particular that was mentioned and now confirmed to be in error, is gospel singer Yolanda Adams.

With the general atmosphere of Freaknik being sexually explicit, it was a real stretch to get Yolanda Adams; fans to believe that she was posing in a botty poppin’ stance during the time her gospel career was morphing into what it is today. Trina, who is confirmed to be in the picture, was still more than three years from releasing her smash single with Trick Daddy, “Nann N****”.

“The Baddest B***h” has now confirmed that Yolanda Adams is not the woman in all black in the bottom right of the picture, much to the assurance of Adams’ fans.

New York Welcomes First Legal Recreational Marajuana Dispensary

Screen Shot 2022 12 29 at 10.07.11 AM

Despite illegal seller operations around the city and across the state, Thursday morning marks the first legal sale of pot at Housing Works Cannabis Company in New York’s Greenwich Village. Housing works is a nonprofit that helps the HIV/AIDS community and also formerly incarcerated people. This new cannabis extension succeeds numerous other additions from thrift shops to bookstores.

On Tuesday morning, a press conference attended by the Office of Cannabis Management Executive Director, Chris Alexander, was held. Public sale begins at 4:20 p.m., a time well suited for cannabis consumption as it reflects the April 20th holiday. The involvement of nonprofit organizations in the distribution of weed and local farmers in production, aims to make the industry as equitable as possible.

In 2012, Washington and Colorado became the first states to legalize cannabis for recreational use, which quickly set the precedent. On March 31, 2021 Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law the New York State Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (“MRTA”) which legalized recreational use of marijuana for adults over the age of 21. The bulk of the cannabis industry is still in the black market, bringing in more than $100 billion each year. By 2026, BDSA predicts the legal U.S. cannabis market will reach $42 billion in annual sales (bigger than Craft beer).

So far, the New York State Cannabis Control Board has approved 36 additional Conditional Adult Use Retail Dispensary Licenses. In the coming months, the state is expected to issue 139 more. To promote the success of these new businesses, the state released guidance earlier this month to allow licensed vendors to deliver marijuana by bikes and scooters.

The grand opening of Housing Works Cannabis Company begins to heal the wounds caused by the mass incarceration of people due to marijuana-related convictions, especially men of color.

Before purchasing cannabis at these dispensaries it is important to come prepared. The guidelines include proof of age (21 and older), limitations on the amount of weed being bought, cash only, limited initial product offerings, prohibited travel across state lines with cannabis products, and long wait times.

The dispensary is located at 750 Broadway and future selling hours will be from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily. All proceeds from dispensary sales go to their parent organization.

[WATCH] Dr. Dre Warned RBX About Taking Gifts From Suge Knight

Screen Shot 2022 12 29 at 10.35.42 AM

In an exclusive interview with The Art of Dialogue, former Death Row rapper RBX talked about a circumstance in 1995 when he was gifted a brand new 750 BMW by Death Row CEO Suge Knight. While the deep voiced “A.WO.L” rapper initially accepted the luxury gift, his lawyer warned him about accepting gifts from such a precarious boss.

“Everybody thought I was weird for a minute. And the reason they was thinking I was weird was ’cause I be turning down shit,” RBX said. “Somebody called me, boom. [They said] ‘Come get this Beamer, X.’ I said, ‘What?’ They said, ‘Suge bought you a brand new 750!’ Mind you, I had just seen Snoop about a week prior. Snoop had a cold 850. I told Suge I want me a black 750.”

He continued the story, saying, “[My lawyer] say, ‘Where you get a Beamer from?’ I say, ‘Suge.’ He say, ‘Mm-hmm. Did they give you the bill of sale to the Beamer?’ I say no. He say, ‘Do you have registration for the Beamer?’ I say no. He said, ‘What do you have in the muthafuckin’ BMW that says that you have permission to drive it?’ I say, ‘Nothing. I got the key!’”

RBX said that it wasn’t long after that he remembered the wisdom of mentor and Death Row in-house producer Dr. Dre. “Dre was part of the label, and every now and then he’ll give you a jewel,” he said. “You gotta listen to him when he say some shit ’cause he not gon’ keep saying it to you. He gon’ say it once and if you don’t catch it then you probably won’t catch it. He was saying something like, ‘If it ain’t registered in your name, it’s not yours. It belong to somebody else.’ And that just stuck. So kudos to Dre.”
