Ice Cold: Hip-Hop Jewelry Exhibition Shines at New York’s Natural History Museum

Slick Rick

Hip-hop culture has long been synonymous with flashy, extravagant jewelry, and now, some of the most iconic pieces worn by hip-hop legends are set to be showcased in an unexpected venue – New York’s American Museum of Natural History (AMNH).

Scheduled to open on May 9th, the exhibition titled “Ice Cold: An Exhibition of Hip-Hop Jewelry” promises to be a dazzling display of bling and craftsmanship. Among the highlights are the gem-encrusted crown worn by Slick Rick, the legendary gold “Jesus piece” of the Notorious B.I.G., and Nicki Minaj’s sparkling “Barbie” pendant.

Guest curator Vikki Tobak emphasizes the significance of jewelry in hip-hop culture, noting its evolution alongside the rise of the genre itself. “From being a culture formed in communities and neighborhoods, and then stepping into its power and starting to impact global pop culture, hip-hop and its jewelry tell a bigger story,” Tobak said.

The exhibition, housed in the AMNH’s Melissa and Keith Meister Gallery within the new Allison and Roberto Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals, is a departure from the museum’s traditional focus on natural history. Known for its extensive displays on science and nature, including dinosaur skeletons and life-size animal exhibits, the AMNH is venturing into new territory with this showcase of hip-hop’s cultural impact.

The museum’s decision to host such an exhibition underscores the significance of hip-hop as a cultural force, especially in its birthplace of New York City. Last year marked the genre’s 50th anniversary, highlighting its enduring influence on music, fashion, and art worldwide.

Admission to the exhibition is included with general museum admission, ranging from $16 to $28 for visitors. With hip-hop jewelry taking center stage in one of New York’s most iconic cultural institutions, “Ice Cold” promises to be a must-see event for fans of both hip-hop and jewelry alike.

Juvenile Teases Hot Boys Reunion: Lil Wayne & B.G. Need to “Simmer Down”

hb

Fans of the iconic rap group Hot Boys have been eagerly awaiting news of a reunion, and it seems like their wishes might soon become a reality. Juvenile, one of the founding members of the group, recently provided an update on the highly anticipated reunion during a recent interview.

While Juvenile didn’t reveal too many specifics, he did confirm to TMZ that a Hot Boys reunion is definitely in the works, as long as everything goes according to plan. “No negativity from me, man,” Juvenile said. “You know, with me, I’m always like, ‘It’s gon’ happen.’ It’s gonna happen. We gotta let them simmer down a little bit. But trust me though, it’s happening.”

Juvenile’s comment about letting things “simmer down” likely refers to recent tensions between Lil Wayne and B.G. In B.G.’s track “Gangstafied” featuring Finesse2tymes, he referred to Lil Wayne as a “b*tch.” However, B.G. later clarified in an Instagram Live session that he still has love for Lil Wayne and that it was all in the heat of the moment.

Lil Wayne, for his part, seems to have moved past the diss. In a recent appearance on YG’s 4HUNNID podcast, Lil Wayne discussed the potential Hot Boys reunion and revealed that logistical issues are the only thing holding them back at this point.

“We’ve spoken about it a few times but, you know, they have situations. Like B.G. just coming home so he gotta figure out: can he tour? Can he travel? And things like that,” Lil Wayne explained. “Juvie ready and Turk ready, but really we gotta see if Geezy can move around.”

With all members expressing their willingness to reunite, fans can remain hopeful that a Hot Boys reunion is on the horizon. As Juvenile aptly put it, “Trust me though, it’s happening.”

Today In Hip Hop History: The Notorious B.I.G Was Shot And Killed In Los Angeles 27 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2023 03 09 at 8.05.57 AM

On this day in 1997, Brooklyn native and Hip Hop legend Christopher Wallace, a.k.a. The Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie Smalls, was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in LA. 27 years ago

Wallace left Puff Daddy’s Vibe Magazine party in a GMC SuburbanS.U.V.V that stopped at a red light at Wilshire Boulevard and South Fairfax. While stopped a Chevrolet ImpalaS.S.S pulled up beside him and his entourage. According to witnesses, a black male dressed in a blue suit and bow tie rolled down his window and shot Biggie four times and he was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

After years of investigations and conspiracy theories as to who killed Biggie and why, no one has been brought to justice to answer for Wallace’s death. Former LAPD Detective Russell Poole fought vigorously, even sometimes against his own peers, to get to the bottom of his untimely death. Poole died from a heart attack on August 19, 2015 while discussing the Tupac Shakur and Wallace cases at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The legacy B.I.G.. left behind is officially embedded in Hip Hop culture two decades later and will continue to influence the community as his family and friends share his story.

Halle Bailey Details Why She Kept Her Pregnancy and Baby Private: ‘Halo Was My Gift’

Halle Bailey is pulling the curtain back on her decision to keep her pregnancy quiet as long as she could.

Halle Bailey is pulling the curtain back on her decision to keep her pregnancy quiet as long as she could.

At the 2024 ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards Ceremony, Halle revealed she was enjoying her “gift.”

“There was no way in hell I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone. Halo was my gift. He is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me, or my family to that,” Bailey said. “With the state of the world and the place it is in with men trying to force their will on our bodies, no one on social media, and for damn sure, no one on the planet was going to tell me what to do with my body or what to share with the world.”

The sentiment echoes that of the child’s father, DDG. Speaking with Hollywood Unlocked, DDG revealed the decision was to push away “negative vibes.”

“I think it was more so people was already giving us negative vibes, so it’s like why let ‘em know then make her pregnancy stressful?”

With a new baby, Halle Bailey and DDG have combined for a new Instagram for their son Halo. In the initial images on the account, Halo’s face is blurred for security.

Halo’s bio reads: “my stylist & dada @ddg run this page.. the flyest baby alive.”

You can see the first image below.

Earlier this week, Halle Bailey confirmed what fans long speculated, she was pregnant. She and her boyfriend, rapper DDG, announced the birth of their son Halo on Instagram.

“Even though we’re a few days into the new year, the greatest thing that 2023 could have done for me, was bring me my son,” Bailey wrote. “Welcome to the world my halo 🥰👼🏽 ✨the world is desperate to know you 😉🤣♥.”

DDG shared, “my biggest blessing by far 👶🏽❤ son son.. never been so in love 🥹 baby halo.”
