On this day in Hip Hop history DMX released his debut album It‘s Dark and Hell Is Hot. This is DMX’s most popular project to date, with Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood serving as a close second. Within the first week of its release selling 251,000 copies debuting at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The LP went on to become certified quadruple platinum on December 18th, 2000.

This project came during a turbulent time in Hip Hop. The genre was coming off of the loss of two titans, Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G., and was facing a change in what was hot. With the rise of high energy production melded with dark and oft-violent lyricism coming from camps like No Limit, Cash Money, and Three 6 Mafia, DMX’s sound allowed him to find his place perfectly within the current trend while add his own twist.

DMX’s melancholic realism spoke to the generation. This project was able to simultaneously turn the party up and cause its listeners to think introspectively about the concept of good and evil and existence as a whole. This album touched on the struggle and pain that came being DMX. As most rappers would glamorize the finer side of the industry life, DMX reveals through this debut that even early on in his career he had been wrestling with the demons that come with wealth and fame.

The stand out hit of the album, “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem”, has been deemed as a classic squad anthem. Produced by Swizz Beatz, the single peaked at #93 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #79 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop.

Following this album, DMX went on to release six other studio albums and rise to be one of the most popular and influential artists of the early 2000s. Shortly following the release of this album DMX made his film debut in the hit film Belly with fellow New York rapper, Nas.

Nicki Minaj Continues Legal Battle Against Blogger Marley Green

Screen Shot 2024 05 12 at 9.22.30 AM

Nicki Minaj is no stranger to the spotlight, but this time, it’s for her ongoing legal dispute with blogger Marley Green, known as “Nosey Heaux,” over defamatory accusations. The rapper filed a lawsuit against Green in 2022, alleging that she was falsely labeled a “cokehead” in a video posted on Twitter. Despite initial efforts to address the issue, the case has seen new developments as Minaj seeks to protect her reputation and seek damages for the alleged defamation.

In a recent update reported by AllHipHop, Minaj sent a letter to the judge in March to provide a status update on the case and propose a way forward. However, Green requested an extension to reply but ultimately failed to do so. In response, Minaj argues that Green’s failure to comply constitutes a waiver of objections to the relief sought by Minaj.

Minaj has also accused Green of non-compliance with multiple discovery requests, further complicating the legal proceedings. In light of these challenges, Minaj is seeking various remedies, including precluding the defendants from seeking further discovery, preventing them from offering evidence in opposition to Minaj’s anticipated motion for summary judgment, and banning them from interposing any objections to the discovery requests.

Minaj is pushing for access to documents related to Green’s alleged statements about her drug use, as well as the viewership and engagement metrics of the video in question. These documents are crucial for Minaj to quantify the tangible damages to her reputation and pursue appropriate legal recourse.

While the lawsuit with Green remains one of Minaj’s many legal battles, it’s not the only legal drama making headlines. RadarOnline reports that Minaj faces another legal challenge from BS Associates Company Limited (BSA), a former concert promoter seeking to collect a million-dollar judgment related to a 2018 deal for a performance in China. Despite a previous award of $1.4 million against Minaj’s company, Pink Personality, the dispute continues to unfold in court.

Nicki Minaj Facing Legal Battle Over Unfulfilled China Concert Deal

Nicki Minaj’s legal woes continue as a former concert promoter seeks to collect a million-dollar judgment from the rapper’s company, Pink Personality. The saga stems from a deal made in 2018 for Minaj to perform in China, a commitment that allegedly went unfulfilled. According to court documents obtained by RadarOnline, BS Associates Company Limited (BSA) is requesting access to third-party witnesses and financial records in their pursuit of compensation.

The initial dispute arose when BSA filed an arbitration claim against Pink Personality, alleging that Minaj had agreed to a concert in China on September 18, 2018. BSA claims to have sent a substantial sum to Minaj’s CAA agents to hold in escrow for the event. Despite complying with Minaj’s request to release $250,000 from the escrow account, the concert did not take place as scheduled. BSA contends that Minaj considered rescheduling the performance but demanded additional funds as a “sign of good faith.” Despite further releases from the escrow account, the concert was never rescheduled.

In November 2023, BSA was awarded a $1.4 million judgment against Pink Personality in arbitration, plus interest. Now, BSA is seeking to enforce the judgment and collect the owed funds. They have requested access to Minaj’s business manager, accountant, agent, and financial advisor, as well as records from Pink Personality and its affiliates. The court has yet to rule on BSA’s request to involve Minaj’s wider team in the legal proceedings.

Happy 91st Birthday The The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan!

LouisFarrakhan

One of the last, real unapologetic voices of Black America that survived the COINTELPRO strategies of the 60s and 70s to become one of the most prolific figures of U.S. history, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, turns 91 years old today.

Born Louis Eugene Walcott in New York in 1933, Minister Farrakhan moved to Boston at a very young age , where he became a very accomplished violinist and later went to Winston-Salem Teachers College on a track scholarship. The Minister married a woman he met in college named Betsy Ross, who later became known as Khadijah Farrakhan. He dropped out of college to take care of his new family and pursued his career as a professional calypso.

When Farrakhan first joined the NOI, he was asked by The Honorable Elijah Muhammad to put aside his musical career as a calypso singer. On April 17, 1993, Farrakhan made his return concert debut with performances of the Violin Concerto in E Minor by Felix Mendelssohn. Farrakhan intimated that his performance of a concerto by a Jewish composer was part of an effort to heal a rift between him and the Jewish community. The New York Times music critic Bernard Holland reported that Farrakhan’s performance was somewhat flawed due to years of neglect, but “nonetheless Mr. Farrakhan’s sound is that of the authentic player. It is wide, deep and full of the energy that makes the violin gleam.”

In July 1955, still known by the name Walcott, the Minister became a registered member of the Nation of Islam and took on the name Louis X, but was soon given the name Farrakhan by Mr. Muhammad, who told all musicians in the NOI they had to choose between music and the Nation of Islam. Farrakhan became the assistant minister at the Muhammad Mosque in Boston under Minister Malcolm X less than a year after becoming a member. Farrakhan was mentored by Malcolm X until he was assassinated in 1965. After Malcolm X’s death, Elijah Muhammad appointed Farrakhan to the two prominent positions that Malcolm held before being dismissed from the NOI.

In an interview with 60 Minutes in 2000, Farrakhan stated that some of the things he said may have led to the assassination of Malcolm X. “I may have been complicit in words that I spoke”, he said. “I acknowledge that and regret that any word that I have said caused the loss of life of a human being.”

After working under the leadership of Elijah’s son, Warith Deen Muhammad, from 1975 to 1978, Farrakhan founded a weekly newspaper entitled The Final Call, which was intended to be similar to the original Muhammad Speaks newspaper that Malcolm X claimed to have started. Farrakhan criticized Warith Deen for allegedly deviating from the teachings of his father, giving some white people X’s and he extended efforts at inter-religious cooperation and outreach to Christians and Jews.

From the early 80s until the present, the Minister is still one of the most prominent voices of reason and justice in the Black community in America. Farrakhan is named dropped by several Hip Hop giants including Public Enemy, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Gangstarr, Common, Flaor Unit’s Lakim Shabazz and numerous others. The Minister has also been known as the go-to elder to resolve a number of beefs in the Hip Hop community including the beefs between Wreckz-N-Effect and A Tribe Called Quest, Common and Ice Cube, and was even called to mediate the beef between Ja Rule and 50 Cent, but was unsuccessful in the latter.

The Minister will continued to be celebrated by the Hip Hop community and The Source Magazine/Northstar Group would like to wish the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan a happy born day today and wish him many more hereafter!

21 Savage Seemingly Shows Support for Drake at LA Concert

JC1 0150 QcEEVItn GKrFflqg

In the midst of escalating tensions within the rap world, with Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar and Drizzy vs. many of his former collaborators, such as Future, Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, Rick Ross and even Kanye, 21 Savage’s stance has remained notably elusive.

Despite the appearance of the 20v1 beef as the 6 God likes to frame it, Savage has maintained a conspicuous silence. Like damn bro, ya’ll just went on a whole tour. Remember “It Was All a Blur” no pun intended but IYKYK.

Get this, amidst the turmoil, Savage’s recent performance in Los Angeles has sparked intrigue. Maybe he picked a side after all.

While on his American Dream tour, while performing the collaborative hit “Rich Flex” from his 2022 project “Her Loss,” Savage had the local crowd passionately singing along to Drake’s verse, hinting at a potential allegiance.

This nod, however subtle, has not gone unnoticed by fans speculating about Savage’s stance in the ongoing drama.

Meanwhile, Metro Boomin’s cryptic social media post last month, in which he made a lot of tweets, teased a potential third installment of his and Savage’s acclaimed “Savage Mode” series, adding fuel to the speculation fire.

The original Savage Mode dropped in 2016, and its widely praised follow-up in 2020 made a new collaboration between the two artists possible, raising questions about where Savage’s allegiances truly lie. But at 21, you just played Drizzy at your show, right?

Amidst all the drama, 21 Savage is kicking off his newest tour, bringing his signature performances to cities nationwide. With dates already announced in major cities like New York, Atlanta, and Chicago, fans eagerly anticipate the opportunity to witness Savage’s talent firsthand while speculating about the subtle messages he might be sending through his music and performances.

Rapper G-Eazy Chooses Dinner with JAY-Z Over $500k: A Life-Changing Encounter

Screen Shot 2024 05 11 at 9.26.38 AM

There are debates that spark endless discussions among hip hop fans and artists alike. One such debate revolves around the hypothetical choice between having dinner with JAY-Z or receiving a hefty sum of $500,000. While some may argue that the cash is king, others, like G-Eazy, view the opportunity to dine with the legendary rapper as invaluable. The Bay Area native recently shared his own experience of sitting down with JAY-Z and described it as nothing short of “life-changing.”

During an appearance on Carmelo Anthony and The Kid Mero’s 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, G-Eazy recounted the unforgettable evening he spent with JAY-Z while working on his sophomore album, Must Be Nice, in 2012. Despite being in the final week of recording and fully focused on completing the project, G found himself agreeing to join JAY-Z for dinner at a New York City restaurant.

Accompanied by his manager, Gee Roberson, G-Eazy embarked on what would turn out to be a transformative experience. As they arrived at the restaurant and were led to JAY-Z’s table, G couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. However, any nerves quickly dissipated as the conversation flowed effortlessly between him and the rap icon.

Reflecting on the encounter, G-Eazy described it as “life-changing,” emphasizing the profound impact it had on him both personally and professionally.

“I’m in the last week of recording, finishing it and one of my managers, who’s a Jedi master, a legend in this industry, Gee Roberson goes like, ‘I’m pulling up. We’re going to dinner.’”

“I still don’t know where we’re going or why the dinner,” he continued. “I’m not in New York to have dinner. I’m here to finish this. We’re going and the whole drive there, I’m like, ‘Brother, how are you going to tell me what?’ We get to the spot and the hostess says, ‘Can I help you?” And [Roberson] goes, ‘Yeah, we’re at Shawn Carter’s table.’ I’m like, ‘Dog, the fuck?’

“I sit down and it’s like [JAY-Z’s] in the corner and he just looks up at me and he’s like, ‘How’d you get here? What’s your story?’ I started panicking. But then we just got into the convo and it was a life-changing kind of evening.”

G-Eazy isn’t the only artist who values the opportunity to connect with JAY-Z on a personal level. CyHi The Prynce, another rapper with ties to the hip-hop mogul, also expressed his preference for a dinner with JAY-Z over a hefty sum of money. Despite JAY-Z’s own recommendation to take the cash, citing his music as a source of wisdom and guidance, artists like G-Eazy and CyHi The Prynce cherish the chance to learn from the living legend firsthand.

For G-Eazy and others, the decision is clear: when given the choice between money and mentorship, they choose the latter every time.
