The 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show Trailer Combines Hits By Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, And Mary J. Blige

A few months ago, hip-hop fans’ dreams came true when it was announced that Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige would all be performing together at the 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show on February 13. Now, as the big day is less than a month away, Pepsi has shared a cinematic new teaser video for the performance.

“The Call,” a near-4-minute video helmed by Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray, features each artist getting an important call, prompting them all to head to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California for the big game. Through the cinematic clip, snippets of the legends’ iconic songs set the stage for the show, as the ad features “Rap God,” “The Next Episode,” “Family Affair,” “Humble,” “Still D.R.E.,” and “California Love.”

Gray says of the video in a statement (via The New York Post), “Each time I collaborate with Dre, it seems to mark an important moment in entertainment history, from projects like Friday, Set It Off, Straight Outta Compton, to now the Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show. As a super fan, I consider it an honor and privilege to authentically build and create this moment with five of the most legendary artists in music history.”

Todd Kaplan, VP of Marketing at Pepsi, also said in a statement, “Now that we are just weeks away from the most anticipated Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show performance of all time, we’re bringing fans closer to the magic of what will certainly be a colossal moment in pop culture history.”

Dr. Dre Could Lose ‘Millions’ If The Super Bowl Halftime Show Gets Canceled By COVID

As Super Bowl LVI, scheduled to be played February 13, inches nearer, the rise of COVID infections nationwide could endanger the whole event — which is extra bad news for Dr. Dre, who’s billed to play the heavily anticipated halftime show with his buddies Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, and Snoop Dogg. According to TMZ, Dre stands to lose “millions” of dollars if the NFL pulls the plug on the event due to COVID concerns.

Unfortunately, that’s owed to an insurance provision that excludes outbreaks of sickness from policies. The Communicable Disease Exclusion — which dates back to the SARS outbreaks in the early 2000s — exempts insurance from paying out in the event of a cancelation resulting from a similar outbreak of a virus or bacteria. While it looks like the Super Bowl will be played as planned, there is an outside chance that with new variants of COVID circulating, things could go south. For now, the NFL is considering options for alternative venues in the works should the state of California or the city of LA decide to reinstitute lockdowns for safety.

Considering that just a year ago, Dre was hospitalized for a brain aneurysm, the fact that he has a chance to perform at all is miraculous by itself, but I’m sure that he won’t appreciate losing any more money in the wake of his recent contentious divorce.

Dr. Dre’s Ex Nicole Young Wins A Cool $100 Million In Divorce Settlement

Dr. Dre x Nicole Young - Divorce

Dr. Dre has settled his divorce case, striking a property settlement agreement with his ex-wife after a months-long battle and salacious revelations about their marital life. Though Nicole Young didn’t ball out like Jeff Bezos’ ex who netted $60 billion, California’s divorce law favored her to the tune of a cool $100 million. Dr. Dre’s Ex-Wife Wins $100 Million And More Through Their Divorce Settlement

Earlier this month, an image of Dr. Dre sitting with a big smile on his face in front of balloons with the words “Divorced AF” hit the internet. The photo was posted by music executive Breyon Prescott, who captioned it, “Hey Well My Brother @drdre Just Told Me It’s Final.” He posted it after a report from TMZ revealed that Dre and his ex-wife Nicole Young’s divorce settlement had ended with him paying her a lump sum of $2 million and an additional $500,000 to cover her attorney fees. Now, new reports from Rolling Stone and TMZ reveal that Dre will have to dish out a lot more money.

Dre has now agreed to pay Nicole a total of $100 million — $50 million now and the remaining half a year from now — which is a sizable cut from his $828 million net worth. The former couple’s prenup barred Nicole from receiving half of Dre’s net worth. However, in addition to the $100 million that Dre will pay her, Nicole keeps four out of the 10 vehicles the couple owned, as well as jewelry, cash, and bank accounts that she maintained during their marriage. Lastly, there are storage lockers filled with items that Dre put in there from their various homes. The settlement says Nicole can keep all of the items in the storage lockers that belong to her.

As for Dre himself, he keeps seven of the properties they own, including a Malibu home, two homes in Calabasas, and four properties in the L.A. area, which includes a $100 million Brentwood estate. He also retains his master recordings, trademarks, interests in various partnerships and trusts, as well as their Apple stocks, which includes proceeds from his Beats By Dre deal.

Sources connected to the former couple say that Nicole could have received an even larger amount from Dre if she had settled a year ago. “She could have even been on the field for the Super Bowl halftime show as a friendly ex-wife,” a source told TMZ.

J. Cole May Have Been The One Who Convinced Dr. Dre To Sign Kendrick Lamar

It’s a Christmas miracle — there’s a new Nardwuar interview! This time, the stalwart of Canadian music journalism is speaking with none other than platinum with — and with no — features, J. Cole. Cole has had a pretty incredible year with the release of The Off-Season earlier this year. Now that his latest project has gone platinum, it’s time for Cole to do some reflecting alongside the ever inquisitive Nardwuar.

This time, Nardwuar wants to know about the Dreamville label-head’s taste in other rappers — he shocks J. Cole by bringing up the fact that it was Cole who told Dr. Dre about Kendrick Lamar back in the day. Sitting silent for almost a full ten seconds after Nardwuar asks him about it, Cole finally tells the story. You can see the excerpt in the tweet above, or the whole interview up top. But a transcript of the gist of what he says is below.

“I’m not going to say I was the first to tell him… when I brought him up to Dre I was like ‘You know what you gotta do is’ — I went in there to work on Detox, you know like how Dre do, if you’re a young rapper and he rock with you, he want to bring you through and have you test the waters — so yeah I was like ‘yo you got to sign this kid from Compton, boom boom, Kendrick boom boom.’ And then [another guy] was like ‘oh yeah that’s the kid I was telling you about! boom boom boom’ So, I have no clue, you know what I mean? I’ve never heard anybody say that type of sh*t, but shout out to Dr. Dre, he made the right decision.”

Well, thanks for helping the entire world get the gift of Kendrick Lamar, Cole! And thanks to Nardwuar for always knowing the best and deepest secrets of every single artist.
