Roddy Ricch Recruits G Herbo And Doe Boy For The Mustard And Southside-Produced ‘Ghetto Superstar’

For two producers whose respective sounds have dominated their respective regions (and the mainstream sound of hip-hop overall), you probably couldn’t find two more different-sounding beatmakers than Mustard and Southside without some serious effort. But when they combine forces on Roddy Ricch‘s new single “Ghetto Superstar,” the effect is truly more than the sum of its parts.

They couldn’t have found a better vehicle to bridge the gap than the versatile Compton native, either; his slippery flow, which is inspired as much by the melodic yodel-rap of Young Thug as it is by hometown heroes like Eazy-E or YG, sounds as natural alongside a Mustard post-hyphy bounce as it does with a trap-tastic trunk thumper from Southside.

But, just to spice things up, the trio also brings along a pair of perfectly-suited guests in G Herbo and Doe Boy, who both tend to defy the dominant sounds of their own respective hometowns in the same way. Herb treats the snares as more of a suggestion than a physical boundary to his conversational flow, while Doe Boy has proven to be more consonant than his Atlanta countrymen like Future, providing an intriguing counterpart to Roddy and Herb’s more glassy-eyed approaches.

Doe Boy Releases A New Song ‘Wanna See A Dead Body’ And Hints At A Deluxe Version Of ‘Oh Really’

In January, Cleveland, Ohio rapper Doe Boy returned with the solo mixtape Oh Really. It was 19 tracks with features from Detroit’s 42 Dugg and Babyface Ray, Chicago’s G Herbo, Memphis’ Lil Double O and Moneybagg Yo, Philadelphia’s Lil Uzi Vert, Jacksonville’s Nardo Wick, Compton’s Roddy Ricch, and Louisville rapper Vory. It showed that he was off to a strong start, and now he’s keeping up this momentum with a new song and music video out today called “Wanna See A Dead Body.”

The track is his signature sound of brooding trap, and the video contributes to the eerie atmosphere by giving him dark wings and showing him smashing mirrors. Underneath the video, he commented: “DELUXE????” meaning that an extended version of Oh Really is probably on its way.

In 2020, Doe Boy teamed up with two of the biggest producers in trap music for 56 Birdz with DJ Esco and Demons R Us with Southside after gaining prominence in 2019 with his feature on Future’s “100 Shooters.” When Doe Boy was about to drop 56 Birdz, Future cryptically hyped it up so much on Twitter that fans got excited thinking it was going to be a new Future album. Needless to say, it upset many fans that it wasn’t

Doe Boy Begins His 2022 Breakout Campaign With The Star-Studded ‘Oh Really’ Mixtape

When last we heard from Cleveland, Ohio trap rapper Doe Boy, he was teaming up with two of the biggest producers in trap music for a pair of 2020 mixtapes, 56 Birdz with DJ Esco and Demons R Us with Southside after gaining prominence in 2019 with his feature on Future’s “100 Shooters.” After coasting on the strength of those releases in 2021, the Freebandz artist has returned with a new solo mixtape titled Oh Really, which he released today along with the video for “BIg Oh Really.”

The 19-track mixtape features a who’s-who of rap rising stars including Detroit’s 42 Dugg and Babyface Ray, Chicago’s G Herbo, Memphis’ Lil Double O and Moneybagg Yo, Philadelphia’s Lil Uzi Vert, Jacksonville’s Nardo Wick, Compton’s Roddy Ricch, and Louisville rapper Vory. Vocalist Ty Dolla Sign also appears on the emotional “Cry For Me.” One notable absence is Doe Boy’s Freebandz benefactor Future, but perhaps that just gives Doe Boy more time to shine. The “Way 2 Sexy” rapper likely learned his lesson after throwing his promotional support behind 56 Birdz only to be shouted down by fans angry he wasn’t announcing a new Future album.

Of course, Doe Boy has more than proven that he can stand on his own and deserves fans’ attention as a strong artist in his own right. Could 2022 be the year it all comes together for him? If nothing else, Oh Really offers a strong start, which could end up being the cornerstone for a breakout year. In the meantime, watch the video for “Big Oh Really” above and stream the new mixtape below.

Oh Really is out now via Freebandz and Epic Records. You can stream it here.

Reason Releases His ‘No More, No Less: Demo 1’ EP Featuring Benny The Butcher, Isaiah Rashad, And Wale

Carson, California-bred TDE rapper Reason has returned with a new EP, No More, No Less: Demo 1, which features appearances from Adé, Benny the Butcher, Doe Boy, Reason’s TDE label-mate Isaiah Rashad, and Wale. Reason calls the EP “a small collection of thoughts and moments that I’ve been asked for repeatedly” and explained that he released it because it was “something I wanted to give to y’all in the meantime” while he’s finishing a proper follow-up to his 2020 album, New Beginnings.

The three-song effort opens with “Left Hand” featuring Benny, Isaiah, and Wale, a block thumper that finds the three rappers trading verses over a variety of different beats. That’s followed by the hypnotic “Not For Me,” which reunites Adé and Wale and includes Benny, then the set concludes with the woozy, downtempo “12am In ATL,” which features Benny, Isaiah, and Doe Boy. Clocking in at nine minutes and 53 seconds in total, No More, No Less showcases Reason’s impressive wordplay by setting it alongside some of the most prolific and clever rappers in the game today.

The EP also helps set up Reason as part of the vanguard of the post-Kendrick TDE roster the label will have to get behind after a “weird time” for TDE in 2020. Along with Isaiah, Ray Vaughn, and Doechii, Reason is carrying the torch for the West Coast rap label as it evolves in the wake of Kendrick Lamar’s departure.

Reason Announces New Project, ‘No More, No Less: Demo 1,’ With Wale, Isaiah Rashad, And More

A little over a year after he released his debut album, New Beginnings, Reason is gearing up for a new release a new project. On Tuesday, the California-bred rapper revealed his next effort, No More, No Less: Demo 1, will arrive on October 29 and will feature appearances from Wale, Adé, Doe Boy, labelmates Isaiah Rashad and Zacari, as well as Griselda’s Benny The Butcher. Reason described the project as “a small collection of thoughts and moments that I’ve been asked for repeatedly,” adding that it’s “something I wanted to give to y’all in the meantime. Love y’all, and see you soon!”

After Reason announced the project, he apologized to fans on Twitter for making them wait for new music. “Apologize to y’all for taking so long,” he said. “Won’t happen again unless it’s purposeful.” Honestly, a year isn’t that long of a wait for a new project from artists. In fact, New Beginnings arrived two years after his previous project, There You Have It, which was released in late 2018.

Reason recently appeared in Isaiah Rashad’s music for “Chad” which features YGTUT and appears on Rashad’s album The House Is Burning.
