DJ Appreciation and Recognition Holiday Toast Takes Place at the Brooklyn Chophouse

“DJ Appreciation and Recognition Holiday Toast” hosted by American Values 2024 was a unique and exciting event that combined the celebration of DJs, holiday cheer, and political engagement. The gathering at the Brooklyn Chophouse in Times Square featured notable DJs like DJ Self, DJ Will, DJ Riz, and DJ Eclipse along with industry insiders Tramell Thompson and Joseph Mitchell (“Smitty”), who were not only celebrated talent but also had the opportunity to learn about Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s presidential run.

Candace McDonald, the CEO of American Values 2024, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, highlighting the importance of DJs in spreading messages. The event not only celebrated the DJs but also provided a platform to share the presidential platform of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. It seems like a creative way to engage with the music industry and promote political awareness.

The surprise performance by hip-hop legend Alskratch, especially with his hit song “Where My Homiez?” on the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, added an authentic touch to the event. The connection to the history of hip-hop likely resonated well with the audience.

The event successfully achieved its intended purpose by bringing together influential DJs who have the power to spread messages, similar to any media outlet. The attendees left eager to learn more about American Values 2024 and its support for Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as an independent candidate facing challenges in securing equitable media coverage.

DJ Self Says Ice Cube Is “Way Better” Than Nas

In an episode of WorldStar‘s “Culture Shock” podcast that was shared yesterday, radio personality DJ Self stated that Ice Cube is a “way better” MC than Nas. The clip was shared on the podcast’s Instagram account, sparking some debate among fans in the comments. One user writes, “Ice Cube is still relevant, so there’s your answer.” Another commenter says, “Hell no he is not better [than] Nas stoppppp it.” “It just depends ice cube and Nas. They have 2 different styles,” another user claims.

DJ Self isn’t the only person to sing the praises of Ice Cube as of late. In March, comedian Kevin Hart appeared on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast and discussed his feelings on the rapper. “Cube might be one of the most genuine, kindest spirits that you can be around,” he said. The comedian went on, “He wants nothing but good for other people. He loves to see the people around him succeed- he’s such a creative mind.” Hart claims, “That’s all he does,” saying, “He loves the foundation of creativity.” He calls Ice Cube, “One of the most professional people [he’s] worked with on set.”

DJ Self Prefers Ice Cube

Ice Cube shared his thoughts on the state of America in February, calling it “uneasy.” In an interview with Wall Street‘s Maria Bartiromo, he said the goal of his BIG3 basketball league is to make U.S. cities “A little better than [they] found them.” He continued, saying, “Everybody got to do their part. The BIG3, we’re going from city to city this year.” Ice Cube went on to say, “Everybody’s got to look in the mirror and say, ‘What can I do to make things better?’”

In March, DJ Self also discussed his relationship with former Love & Hip Hop costar Cardi B in an interview with My Expert Opinion. He was asked if he felt as if he had discover the “WAP” rapper, to which he replied, “that’s a strong word.” The DJ went on to say, “You can’t discover something that is there.” He did, however, claim that he “put the magnifying glass on her.” Adding, “I put her on television. I didn’t put her in a record deal.” The two starred alongside each other on the series Love & Hip Hop, which followed Cardi B’s journey out of stripping and into a lucrative career.

Jim Jones Teases Dipset TV Show

Jim Jones teased working on a TV series that will detail the rise of the legendary New York rap group, The Diplomats. Jones hinted at the show during an interview on DJ Self’s Apt. 5H talk show. He says that the group was “young, dumb and stupid” during their come up, but had a “ball” doing it.

“You got a talk show, I’m about to give you the Dipset 5H TV series,” Jim told DJ Self during the interview. “I think I’ma do that ‘cause the shit that went on in 5H before we became the players we were, you n****s need to see. We was reckless. Young, dumb and stupid, but we was having a ball.”

The new interview isn’t the first time that Dipset have referenced a potential TV show regarding their story. During a Q&A session with media personality Wayno in celebration of the 20th anniversary of his album Come Home With Me, Cam’ron confirmed that they’d been approached for a similar idea. “They offered us deals before or offered me deals as well. I rather shoot it with my money, my way,” Cam said at the time. “They’ll come to you like, ‘Yo, we’ll give you a percentage of the Diplomat movie.’ And I’m like, ‘Ok, what’s the percentage?’ And they’re like, ‘We’ll give you 10, 15 percent.’ How you going to give me 10 percent of my story? That shit don’t even be making no sense to me sometimes. I’m like, ‘Aight, I’ll fund it and y’all take the 10 percent and do distribution.’ But they’re not used to n****s talking to them like that.”

The Diplomats originally formed back in the 1990s with Cam’ron, Jim Jones, and Freekey Zekey. They later added Juelz Santana to the team in 1999 and landed a record deal with JAY-Z’s Roc-A-Fella Records in 2001. They released a number of the biggest hits from the 2000s including “Dipset Anthem,” “I Really Mean It,” and many more.

DJ Self Answers If He Thinks He Discovered Cardi B, Says She Never Thanked Him

Anyone who watched Love & Hip Hop during Cardi B’s reign remembers her relationship with DJ Self. The pair seemed to have a love-hate thing going on, and at the time, Cardi was an aspiring artist moving from the strip club to the microphone. She enlisted help from her industry contacts, including famed Power 105.1 radio host DJ Self. However, on-screen, it looked as if they were mixing business with pleasure, and it was suggested that Self made promises to help Cardi’s career by playing her tracks on the radio.

The unscripted series followed the storyline as it unraveled. Cardi was frustrated because Self wasn’t fulfilling his oaths, and in the end, they went their separate ways. Obviously, Self’s apprehension didn’t stop the “WAP” hitmaker from pushing forward, even eventually earning herself her first Grammy. In an interview with My Expert Opinion, Self speaks on his relationship with the Rap star.

Did DJ Self Discover Cardi B?

For a moment, the conversation shifted to whether or not Self believes he’s responsible for discovering Cardi. “When you use that word discover, that’s a strong word with discover,” the DJ stated. “You can’t discover something that is there. I put the magnifying glass on her.” Elsewhere, Self said that Cardi didn’t thank her for his help but admitted that he may not have done anything for her music career.

The My Expert Opinion hosts seemed confused about why Cardi wouldn’t thank him. “I put her on television. I didn’t put her in a record deal,” said Self. Still, the hosts believed that he opened up a platform for her to be visible on a famed franchise, thus setting her up for success.

Cardi Calls Love & Hip Hop Storyline Fake

Back in 2018, while discussing Love & Hip Hop, Cardi told her Instagram followers that her storyline with Self was fake. The rapper admitted that the controversy was all for ratings, but it didn’t come as a surprise. Although these shows are categorized as “reality,” the industry has long touted them as “unscripted.” This means most of the time, they’re given a storyline that they improvise during filming. Check out DJ Self above and see what he says about Jim Jones being the only artist to thank him.
