Meek Mill subliminally replied to DJ Drama’s comments on Lil Uzi Vert’s “Just Wanna Rock” becoming the new anthem for the Philadelphia Eagles. His “Dreams and Nightmares” intro has been the Eagles’ anthem. “Lighting The World For 10 Years!” The “Levels” rapper responded to DJ Drama’s claim that the city of Philadelphia had a new […]
DJ Drama started a huge debate recently after he said Lil Uzi Vert’s “Just Wanna Rock” is Philly’s new anthem, overtaking the intro to Dreams and Nightmares by Meek Mill. While both tracks are undeniably iconic, the choice is tough given that Meek’s intro’s been around for over a decade. In fact, he took to Twitter to defend his longstanding banger, citing its longevity and acclaim. “Intro been lighting the world for 10 years!” he tweeted yesterday (February 2) after Drama’s take spread. “Like shaking rooms for years!”
Furthermore, the Gangsta Grillz legend said that Uzi’s newest hit is the new dominant track in Philly, especially after they walked the Eagles out to their Super Bowl-affirming game last Monday (January 30). Moreover, TMZ spoke to Drama shortly after the victory. “I think it’s fair to say that ‘Just Wanna Rock’ has replaced — with all due respect — ‘Dreams and Nightmares’ as the new anthem of Philadelphia,” Drama stated. “As the new anthem of the Philadelphia Eagles this year, I’m looking forward to hearing that song many, many times [during] Super Bowl weekend.”
Of course, the DJ’s words caused many to weigh in on the match-up. While ‘Just Wanna Rock’ is currently one of the biggest songs in the world, many blasted Drama for his take. For example, one fan wrote “Biggest difference is Meek Mill got an ANTHEM and Lil uzi is a hot SONG.” Another commented “That don’t sound like Philly music,” which even people from outside the city seem to agree with. “I’m not even from Philly…Dreams and Nightmares all day,” someone posted.
However, many also pointed out that of course the 44-year-old supported an artist on his label. “It’s Drama’s label so of course he gonna say that,” a fan pointed out. “But let’s just dead the debate n go back to Freeway’s ‘What we do’ !” which is another strong contender. Still, which song do you think wins in this debate? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments and nominate songs missing in the Philly anthem discussion. DJ Drama doesn’t think Meek Mill’s iconic Dreams & Nightmares intro has the same grip on Philadelphia as it once did. This week, the iconic Gangsta Grillz DJ caught up with TMZ following the Eagles’ win on Sunday. As the team marched out with Lil Uzi Vert at the front of their parade, the rapper’s single, “Just Wanna Rock” blared through the speaker system. As a result, Drama thinks Uzi’s “Just Wanna Rock” replaced Meek Mill’s “Dreams & Nightmares” intro as the official anthem of Philadelphia right now.
“I think it’s fair to say that ‘I Just Wanna Rock’ has replaced — with all due respect — ‘Dreams and Nightmares’ as the new anthem of Philadelphia. As the new anthem of the Philadelphia Eagles this year,” Drama said. “I’m looking forward to hearing that song many, many times [during] Super Bowl weekend.”
It might be an overreach to say that it’s replaced “Dreams & Nightmares.” After the Eagles won on Sunday, videos emerged of Meek Mill’s hit record playing through the Philadephia streets. Meek was incredibly excited after the Eagles win, as well. He later offered to perform at a club for free to celebrate the victory.
“Just Wanna Rock” appears to be the launching point of Uzi’s long-awaited project, Pink Tape. Earlier this month, Uzi came through with a high-energy performance of the single at the Apollo Theater for Drake’s show. Perhaps, we could see a new single drop sometime soon.
The rapper hinted at the release ofPink Tape last year before he dropped off Red + White. He hasn’t provided a clear release date on the project, though he indicated that it would drop in February. Considering the momentum that “Just Wanna Rock” built in recent times, it feels like February is a better time than any for the follow-up to Eternal Atake.
T.I. just shared what DJ Drama’s reaction was when the “Whatever You Like” rapper called himself the “King of the South.” While it’s a bold claim to make, his career longevity, influence, and reach make it a pretty solid affirmation. Furthermore, the Atlanta icon opened up to Shannon Sharpe on Club Shay Shay about their first encounter.
“DJ Drama made a big return in 2022,” Sharpe stated. “He’s obviously one of the greatest DJs. How did you meet DJ Drama and how did this thing go so well between you two?”
“Mmm,” T.I. exclaimed. “I believe Jason introduced me to Drama, I don’t recall exactly how they met. I know Dram’ spent a lot of time at the AU. He went to Clark… anyway, so he spent a lot of time at AU. Him and DJ Cannon and Sense and them, they were putting a crew together and they started just DJing and doing mixtapes. He called me in to freestyle on a mixtape.”
“Had that ever happened before?” Sharpe asked the trap innovator.
“Yeah, here and there,” he replied. “Mostly in New York, though. That was one of the first times it happened in Atlanta. So I came in, I freestyled, and I said ‘King of the South’ in the freestyle. He kind of raised his head, like ‘Woah, what? What’s that? What you say?’ I said, ‘You heard what I said.’” Both T.I. and the NBA personality laughed at the exchange.
“We just had a conversation about that, and he gave me like, ‘Okay,’” he continued, widening his eyes and moving his head to make an expression. “You know, one of them. I think that became the first Gangsta Grillz, if I’m not mistaken.”
Meanwhile, the 42-year-old recently compared his style to a fusion of Jay-Z, Tupac, Diddy, and Snoop Dogg. While influences in the rap game run deep, T.I. clearly has his own style to work with.
Still, what did you think of T.I.’s recent comments about DJ Drama’s reaction to his self-proclaimed “King of the South” status? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments down below. Also, as always, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest curious stories from the hip-hop game’s best.
2023 is the year of the Gangsta Grillz. The latest artist to announce he has a tape on the way with the legendary DJ Drama is Fivio Foreign. The NY-Drill rapper hit Twitter with a simple message: “DJ Drama doin my Mixtape tho [fire emoji].”
Fivio would double back with additional details about his efforts, “Sicc & Tired is on DSP’s Notice Me should b on by next week keep pushing dat shit.”
Prior to the resurgence of Gangsta Grillz mixtapes in 2022, Tyler, The Creator revived the series with his 2021 album. He dropped Call Me If You Get Lost with DJ Drama. The project later earned him another Grammy award.
During a conversation with Complex at Matthew M. Williams’ Fall/Winter 2023 Givenchy show during Men’s Fashion Week in Paris, Pusha T explained the significance of mixtape culture.
“I just feel like to me, the Gangsta Grillz and the whole mixtape culture and scene is what I’m about. That’s the purest form of Hip Hop to me,” Push said. “The fact that Drama is having so much success, the fact that that’s what I love in Hip Hop, I want to merge those worlds and see what happens.”
The It’s Almost Dry rapper said Tyler’s Grammy-award-winning album inspired him to do a Gangsta Grillz tape.
“I’m going to be honest with you, seeing Drama’s mixtape with Tyler and how they won a Grammy, I was like, ‘Man, mixtapes really won a Grammy.’ So I’m trying to be a part of that culture as well,” he added.
In the past year, Dreamville, Snoop Dogg, Symba, Jim Jones, and more have dropped their own respective Gangsta Grillz project. For Push, his upcoming tape will mark his first with Drama.
Juelz Santana is gearing up to drop his highly-anticipated Gangsta Grillz mixtape, We In Motion, sometime later this year.
In order to promote the project, the Harlem native took to his Instagram account on Thursday (January 5) to hype it up. Playing a snippet of what’s assumedly the beat for a collaborative track with Joyner Lucas, he doesn’t hold back in sharing his excitement.
“Santana and Joyner Lucas. I’m not even gon’ say no other names. O.M.G. We In Motion on the f*cking way,” he exclaims as the drill beat plays in the background. Considering he’s not mentioning the names of any other artists, it will certainly be interesting to see who else will be featuring on the tape.
The Dipset rapper announced the new mixtape in an Instagram post on Christmas Day. It’s set to serve as his first full-length offering following his release from prison in August of 2020. The Harlem native was behind bars for a year and a half on gun charges.
It’s been nearly three years since we last got a full-length project from the 40-year-old. 2020’s #FREESANTANA boasts features from the likes of 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne, Jim Jones and more. It dropped while he was still serving his time in prison.
Are you hyped for We In Motion to drop? Comment your thoughts on Juelz Santana seemingly getting ready to rap over a drill beat. Finally, make sure to stay tuned to HNHH for all of the latest music updates and releases.
