Dillon Brooks has finally spoken. After being tossed by LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers from the playoffs, Brooks had been silent, opting to skip post-game media availability and receiving a $25,000 fine in the process.

Brooks was on hand at the Grizzlies’ season wrap-up session and gave his thoughts to the media. “That’s who I am,” Brooks said. “I’m a competitor. I compete. I don’t think it got LeBron ‘geeked’ up. He’s back in the playoffs, it’d been a little while. He was ready to play.”

After the Los Angeles Lakers ousted the Memphis Grizzlies from the NBA Playoffs, King James didn’t stick around to shake hands with his opponent, especially Dillon Brooks. But over the weekend, the Lakers star did have some messages to get off, one of which was written by JAY-Z.

Hitting Twitter, James sent a message to the young boys, evoking the energy of HOV’s “Trouble” when, at a point, he was doing the same.

Dillon Brooks has broken his silence on his beef with LeBron James following the Memphis Grizzlies’ loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the NBA playoffs. James appeared to subtweet Brooks by quoting JAY-Z lyrics on Saturday night as the Lakers advanced to the second round. Despite the defeat, Brooks says he has no regrets about angering LeBron James.

“That’s who I am,” he told reporters on Sunday. “I’m a competitor. I compete. I don’t think it got LeBron ‘geeked’ up. He’s back in the playoffs, it’d been a little while. He was ready to play.” Prior to the comments, the NBA announced that it had fined Brooks $25,000 for “failure to participate in team postgame media availability during the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs.”

“Unlike you little ****, I’m a grown ass man,” James’ tweet reads. “Big shoes to fill, grown ass pants. Prolly hustled with your pops, go ask your parents. It’s apparent you’re staring at a legend. Who put a few little **** in they place before. Trying to eat without saying they grace before!” The quote comes from JAY-Z’s song, “Trouble,” off of 2006’s Kingdom Come. James also posted on Instagram, “If you ever see me fighting in the forest with a Grizzly bear, HELP THE BEAR.”

Things between Brooks and James really heated up as the games went on between the Lakers and Grizzlies. After taking Game 2, Brooks told reporters, “I don’t care, he’s old. You know what I mean? I was expecting him to do that game four, game five. He wanted to say something when I got my fourth foul, he should’ve been saying that earlier on. I poke bears, I don’t respect no one until they come and give me 40. I pride myself on what I do.”

Dillon Brooks was all bark, no bite during the first round of the NBA playoffs. Despite sounding off about eliminating the Lakers and not respecting LeBron, it’s Brooks who is getting an early start to the offseason. The seven-seed Lakers took down the two-seed Grizzlies in six games, including an embarrassing 125-85 rout in the decisive Game 6.

LeBron made his feelings on the “beef” between the two players known via Twitter. However, Brooks is unusually quiet. Maybe he’s finally learning to walk the walk if he wants to talk to talk. Or maybe he’s figuring out his next move, as he is set to be a free agent come the end of the season. The problem is that Brooks’ silence is about to cost him a decent amount of money.

Brooks Fined For Media Policy Violation

Brooks did not make himself available to the media for any of the three road losses the Grizzlies suffered. Brooks did not play well in the series as a whole. He shot a dismal 31.2%, and an atrocious 23.8% from three. This was in spite of often being wide open as the Lakers de-prioritized perimeter defense. Brooks had some big moments in the backcourt, but they grew less and less frequent as the series progressed. He was also ejected from Game 3 after just 17 seconds of the third quarter for a flagrant foul on LeBron. His decision to skip the media for half the series is a violation of the NBA’s policy on media access to players. He has now been handed down a $25,000 fine for his behavior, according to a statement from the league office. It’s unclear where Brooks goes from here. While he does not call out Brooks by name, it’s clear that he’s calling out the Grizzlies defender. “It’s apparent you’re staring at a legend” is more than likely referring to Brooks’ comments about now respecting LeBron. Brooks was largely been unable to back up his trash talk after his shutdown defense in Game 2. Meanwhile, LeBron absolutely balled out.
