Today In Hip Hop History: Notorious B.I.G.’s Debut LP ‘Ready To Die’ Dropped 28 Years Ago
On September 13, 1994, Notorious B.I.G., alongside producers Easy Mo Bee, DJ Premier, Poke of the Trackmasters, and none other than “Puffy” (as Diddy was called then) as the executive producer, released the Hip Hop masterpiece known as Ready To Die.
As Big’s debut album, this highly anticipated release shows the lyrical prowess of the Bed-Stuy big man, and besides Method Man’s assistance on the epic “The What?” track, Mr. Wallace made it happen all by himself. Other than Nas’ Illmatic, no other solo emcee accomplished that feat during that era on the East Coast. Recognized as “The King Of New York” and as seen on a vintage 1995 Source Magazine cover, Big’s legacy was etched in stone with this LP.
Timeless classics from that four and a half mic-er include the DJ Premier produced “Unbelievable,” the back and forth storytelling adventures of “Warning” and “Gimme The Loot,” and the eerie title track itself were just a few of the highlights of this legendary project. That’s not to forget the mainstream success of singles such as “One More Chance,” the Brooklynplayalistic sound of “Big Poppa,” and of course the hood inspirational, Mtume-based “Juicy.”
We only had the chance to get one more album(prophetically named Life After Death) out of one of the game’s greatest lyricists before he was prematurely killed in Los Angeles in 1997. Still, this album will always remind us that B.I.G. was “Ready to Die” because his talent was and will always be larger than life.
Salute to Big (RIP), Premier, Easy, Poke, Lord Finesse, Diddy, Lil’ Kim, and the entire Wallace family for this classic masterpiece!

Fat Joe and Diddy Receive Pilot Order for New Interview Series on STARZ
Today, STARZ revealed that it will be creating a pilot for an unnamed genre-defying program that combines heightened documentary style with celebrity and high-profile guest interviews. Fat Joe, a Grammy-nominated musician, businessman, and philanthropist, will host the event and serve as executive producer. Sean “Diddy” Combs will also serve in this capacity through his production company, REVOLT Studios. The pilot will also be produced by the multi-Emmy award-winning studio branch of SpringHill, which was established by LeBron James and Maverick Carter.
“We’re about to create the biggest and most culturally-relevant series on television,” Fat Joe said. “With Puff, LeBron, the incredible team at STARZ and myself teaming up, you have a dream team that is guaranteed to produce TV gold. Hosting a show has always been a dream of mine and I’m thankful for everyone who helped make it a reality. I promise you that we’re going to push the envelope, deliver compelling interviews and provide pure entertainment. Do remember – you don’t know who I know!”
“I’m excited to partner with STARZ and bring these cultural giants together to create the No. 1 show on television,” said Sean “Diddy” Combs. “Fat Joe is a very authentic and respected voice in the culture that deserves a platform to bring these important conversations to a global audience on a major network.”
“Time and time again, Fat Joe has delivered outstanding, insightful interviews with legendary personalities who define the zeitgeist, and we are thrilled to welcome him to the STARZ family,” said Kathryn Busby, President, Original Programming, STARZ. “Fat Joe, Sean Combs and LeBron James are inspirational icons, and we can’t wait to get started on this incredible journey.”
The show represents the pinnacle of the Bronx native’s development into a media celebrity. Alicia Keys, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Floyd Mayweather, Dwyane Wade, Jamie Foxx, and others were among the influential people Joe interviewed on The Fat Joe Show, a nightly Instagram Live talk show that Joe launched in March 2020. The platform quickly developed into a news-breaking engine.
In the past year, Joe has increased his hosting experience by hosting the official recap for Triller’s famed VERZUZ platform as well as numerous appearances as a guest host for “The Wendy Williams Show.”
LeBron James, Maverick Carter, Jamal Henderson, and Philip Byron will serve as executive producers on the SpringHill-produced STARZ pilot. STARZ’s Alice Dickens-Koblin, Senior Vice President and Head of Unscripted Programming, will be in charge of the initiative.
Fat Joe will also serve as the host of the 2022 BET Hip-Hop Awards.

Diddy Joins Kanye And Swizz Beatz In Adidas Boycott, Vows To Never Wear Adidas Again
Over the last week, Kanye has been vocal about his frustrations with Adidas, calling out the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Adidas, Daniel Cherry III, on IG along with the footwear giant’s executive board. Kanye also claimed that Adidas had tried to offer him $1 billion for Yeezy and even issued an ultimatum to Adidas saying that unless they abided by his terms, he would end his partnership with the brand today, September 6.
Following his string of posts on IG, many came in support of Ye, even Swizz Beatz who called Adidas copying Ye’s designs “DEAD WRONG.”
“I usually mind my business but this is DEAD WRONG! If we let them do this to @kanyewest it will happen to us also! This man created this groundbreaking innovation and it should be respected as a creative ! YE is only asking for his work to be respected and not stolen that’s not crazy to me !! We not buying these !!!!!!!!!!!! @adidas you’re supposed to be original do the correct thing please !!!”
Recently, Diddy has joined the two in their Adidas boycott. He went on to post the text exchange between him and Kanye where he asked Ye if he could send him something that he could post on social media in support of Ye. In the caption of the post, Diddy vowed never to wear Adidas shoes until they made things right with Ye.
“Since the era of Run-DMC, @Adidas has always used Hip Hop to build its brand and make billions off of our culture,” Diddy said. “BUT WE ARE MORE THAN JUST CONSUMERS NOW, WE’RE THE OWNERS. @KanyeWest and @Yeezy are the reason Adidas is relevant to culture. WE KNOW OUR VALUE! I’m done wearing Adidas products until they make this right!! We have to support each other!! Everybody repost this please!!”
In a post on his IG yesterday, Kanye posted a message that seemed as if he had either left Adidas or the company finally gave into his demands. The message read “I could hear the joy in my teams voices today. Adidas don’t want no more smoke. The movie credits are rolling. This war wasn’t about money. It was about control of our families, of our business, of our story. I gave them the opportunity to settle this quietly. Now it’s time for Gap : )”

Diddy Gets Some Production Advice From Dr. Dre In The Studio
Many musical legends never get the chance to work together, leaving fans wondering what could result from a collaboration. Diddy and Dr. Dre are indelible parts of music history, but they’ve never formally got the chance to work together — that is, until recently.
In a Tuesday Instagram post, the one known as “Brother Love” shared photos of himself and the Beats Electronic co-founder working together in the studio coupled with an earnest message. “Yesterday, one of my biggest dreams finally came true. I remember the first time I heard @DrDre’s production. It gave me clear direction on the level of Producer that I wanted to be,” Diddy said. “Last night, I got the chance to work with this man and to see his genius as he coached me through vocals. He reminded me of myself, but with a different style and way more focused. I gotta step my focus up!”
Rap Radar reported that the two joined forces to contribute to Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s forthcoming joint album, which Snoop confirmed in his recent appearance on the Rap Radar podcast alongside Jamie Foxx. Though details about the project remain thin on the ground, with heavy hitters like Diddy in the mix it’s bound to be a mindblowing listen.
