Killer Mike Drops “Run” Featuring Young Thug and Dave Chappelle

Killer Mike

It’s been over a decade since Killer Mike released a solo track, but this weekend he came back in a big way, dropping the video for “Run,” a powerful track and video with a political message that featured an intro by Dave Chappelle with a guest verse by Young Thug.

The video, directed by Adrian Villagomez, centers around key American historical battles, but reframing them as key moments in black history and the fight for freedom. The video shows Killer Mike on historical battlefields, but as the leader a battalion of Black and allied people who are fighting enemies including Nazis, secessionists, and confederate soldiers. The intro by Dave Chappelle references his “Normandy” monologue.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Killer Mike described the inspiration for the song and video as such: “If you’re looking at this video, certain things are gonna stand out: Obviously, there’s a war going on for people who want justice and righteousness, and there’s a war that’s symbolized by what you would notice is old Confederate uniforms and Nazi-like uniforms,” adding that he included the Chappelle monologue clip because he was “inspired by the monologue that Dave Chappelle did at the beginning — to be representative that there’s a fight, the spiritual fight, that is going on every single day with us.”

In addition to historical references, the video also calls for the release of Young Thug and Gunna during Young Thug’s verse. In the video, a soldier can be seen waving a white flag with “Free Thug, Protect Black Art, Free Gunna” written on it while another scene shows a soldier wearing a white arm band that says “Free YSL.” (YSL Records rappers Young Thug and Gunna are both currently in jail as part of a 56-count RICO case.)

Dave Chappelle Declines High School Renaming Theatre In His Honor

Dave Chappelle attacked

Following the release of his last Netflix comedy special, The Closer, Dave Chappelle was met with a swarm of controversy over his transphobic views. In the midst of his controversy, Chappelle’s alma mater, Duke Ellington School Of The Arts, made the decision to rename the school’s theatre after the legendary comedian.

This decision was met with backlash by many students who did not support Chappelle’s views. Chappelle even came to the school where he engaged in a discussion with students against the theatre being named after him. He later announced a fundraiser, and would only go forward with the renaming if more money was raised in favor of the theatre being renamed after him.

Well, more money was raised in Chappelle’s favor, and on Monday, the official renaming ceremony took place. During the ceremony, however, Chappelle decided against the theatre being named after him.

“I took a lot of cold shots in business… but that day, they hurt me,” Chappelle said to the crowd on Monday night. He went on to defend his stand-up, calling it a “masterpiece.”

“No matter what they say about ‘The Closer,’ it is still (one of the) most-watched specials on Netflix. The more you say I can’t say something, the more urgent it is for me to say it. It has nothing to do with what you are saying I can’t say. It has everything to do with my freedom of artistic expression.”

He then said he would not “reject” but would “defer” the theatre’s renaming in order to emphasize the nuance of art” as well as “my right, my freedom of artistic expression.” He said that the theatre will instead be named the Theater of Artistic Freedom & Expression, which was met with applause. Chappelle noted that he made the decision last Friday.

Jerrod Carmichael Believes Dave Chappelle Tarnished His Legacy Over Opinions On Trans Community

jerrodfeature

In a new interview with GQ Hype, comedian Jerrod Carmichael voiced his support for the new generation of comedians, cancel culture, and Dave Chappelle, saying that the legendary comedian has “found a hill to die on.”

“I love this generation,” he said in the interview. “I actually fuck with them, and fuck all those comedians that are going so hard against them.”

Carmichael also spoke about his recent stand-up special where he came out as gay and how following the announcement, the only person to reach out to him was his 15-year-old niece.

Carmichael then talked about “cancel culture” and a “boogeyman” that comedians create to sound “edgy” and sell more tickets.

“Who’s getting canceled for what they’ve said? What does that mean, that people are mad on Twitter? Everybody’s fine. These grown men are fine. I think, a lot of times, people who offer nothing truthful or meaningful about themselves then complain about society at large and create this boogeyman. It’s like, listen, that’s the most urgent thing in your life? God bless you. I’m tired of hearing it.”

Carmichael then turned his attention to Dave Chappelle, wondering why such a legend would tarnish his legacy over opinions about the trans community.

“Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro? That’s the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans sh*t? It’s an odd hill to die on. And it’s like, hey, bro. Who the f*ck are you? Who do you f*ck? What do you like to do? Childish jokes aside, who the f*ck are you? It’s just kind of played. But he’s choosing to die on the hill. So, alright, let him.”

Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock to Co-Headline Comedy Show in London

chris and dave

Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock’s recent on-stage attacks have made them the two biggest comedians globally. Being attacked while on stage has made them even closer friends, as it was recently announced the two would hold a joint comedy show in London later this year.

Live Nation announced the show yesterday, June 7, which will take place at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday, September 3.

Since the announcement, neither comedian has said anything on social media regarding the show. But that doesn’t mean that fans of the two aren’t excited to see them take the stage, this time, without getting assaulted.

Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock have made headlines this year, but for reasons outside of their comedy. Back in March, Chris Rock was slapped by Will Smith on stage during the Academy Awards after he told a “G.I. Jane” joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith about her low haircut. After the attack, reports about her battle with alopecia came to light. Will Smith was able to win the Best Actor Award that night but was subsequently banned from the following 10 Academy Awards.

A month later, Dave Chappelle was attacked on stage while performing at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The attacker would later admit that he was offended by Chappelle’s jokes about bisexual people and revealed that he identifies as bisexual. Unlike Smith, Chappelle’s attacker was beaten backstage by Chappelle’s crew, and even Jamie Foxx got a couple of licks in. Rock was even backstage when Chappelle had been attacked.

After the show was announced, people instantly took to social media to get their jokes off.

Dave Chappelle Announces He Will Donate Proceeds From Buffalo Show To Families Of Shooting Victims

Dave Chappelle Tests Positive for COVID-19

Dave Chappelle closed out his set on Sunday at Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo by announcing that the proceeds from the show will go to the families of the 10 victims of the racially motivated mass shooting that occurred on May 14th.

“He said, and I’m paraphrasing, I came here to Buffalo to recognize the victims and for these families,” said Kevin Sweeney, director of marketing and communications for Shea’s Performing Arts Center.

Chappelle’s show was extremely last minute, with tickets having gone on sale Thursday morning. Chappelle ended up selling out the 3,019 seat venue in just an hour. Among those in attendance were members from the families of the 10 victims of May 14ths mass shooting. They were personally invited by Chappelle.

Payton Gendron, the 18-year-old white supremacist, is currently facing 10 counts of first-degree murder, 10 counts of second-degree murder as a hate crime, 3 counts of attempted murder as a hate crime, one for domestic terrorism motivated by hate, and a weapons charge for the murder of 10 Black people in the parking lot of a Tops grocery store in Buffalo.

After the mass shooting, authorities found Gendron’s diary where he wrote about wanting to livestream an attack on Black people. The entries in the journal also read that Gendron targeted that specific grocery store because many Black people shopped there.

Dave Chappelle’s Attacker Says He Was Inspired by Will Smith’s Oscar Slap

Dave Chappelle's Attacker Charged with Attempted Murder From A Different Attack

Dave Chappelle’s attacker, Isaiah Lee, has revealed he felt Will Smith’s attack on Chris Rock was commendable. Speaking with the New York Post, the attacker stated the Oscars slap inspired him to take the stage.

“That’s not right what [Chris Rock] said about his wife, calling her GI Jane,” Lee said. After stating the move inspired his actions, Lee added that Smith was right in “standing up for his wife.”

In a different conversation with the Post, Lee said as a member of the LGBTQ community, he wanted Chappelle to know that he should consider all audiences.

“I identify as bisexual… and I wanted him to know what he said was triggering,” he said to the Post. “I wanted him to know that next time, he should consider first running his material by people it could affect.”

Lee has entered a not guilty plea to the misdemeanor charges levied against him after the attack. He was charged with misdemeanor battery, possession of a weapon with intent to assault, unauthorized access to the stage area during a performance, and commission of an act that delays the event or interferes with the performer.

Lee also told the post that he is a single father of a five-year-old. Lee not only took issue with the jokes at the gay community but also stated Chappelle’s jokes toward the homeless were offensive. “It’s a struggle and I wanted Dave Chappelle to know it’s not a joke.”

Lee also stated Chappelle met with him later about the attack to which he told the comedian about his family history. “I told him my mother and grandmother, who fought for his civil rights to be able to speak, would be upset at the things he said,” Lee said. Lee said Chappelle’s response was sharp, “Now your story will die with you, son.”

In addition to his Chappelle attack, Complex reports L.A.’s District Attorney’s Office announced Lee was charged with attempted murder. The new charge is in connection with an incident from 2021.

According to authorities, Lee is accused of stabbing a roomate during an altercation at a housing apartment on Dec. 2. Lee pleaded not guilty.

“The publicity generated by the attack on Mr. Chappelle helped police solve this crime,” said LA County District Attorney George Gascón. “The incident that occurred at the Hollywood Bowl was misdemeanor conduct and rightfully referred to the City Attorney’s Office. Based on the nature and severity of the December attack, Mr. Lee is now facing felony charges which my office will prosecute.”
