The Hollywood Bowl’s Packed 2024 Summer Season Features Mitski, Beck, Roots Picnic, And Much More

Today (February 6), the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association announced the 2024 summer season for the Hollywood Bowl. The legendary venue will host performances from artists like Mitski (in her Hollywood Bowl debut) and Beck, as well as the first West Coast edition of Roots Picnic, featuring The Roots, Queen Latifah, Common, Digable Planets, Arrested Development, The Pharcyde, Black Sheep, and more.

Other highlights from the season include the world premiere of Marvel Studios’ “Infinity Saga Concert Experience,” a Juneteenth celebration with T-Pain and special guests, the two-day Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival featuring artists like Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper, and other performances by artists including Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit, Chaka Khan, Gary Clark Jr., and Herbie Hancock.

The Roots Picnic Is Coming To Hollywood In 2024 With Common, Queen Latifah And More

The Roots Picnic has been a staple of the band’s hometown, Philadelphia since 2008, bringing guests from across the spectrum of their collaborators and friends to Penn’s Landing. For those of us on the West Coast, though, the exciting festival has been a little difficult to attend. That all changes next year, when The Roots bring The Roots Picnic to LA, thanks to the Hollywood Bowl. Roots Picnic: Hip-Hop Is The Love Of My Life will take place on Saturday, June 29, along with special guests Arrested Development, Black Sheep, Common, Digable Planets, The Pharcyde, Queen Latifah, and more. Tickets for the event go on sale Thursday, December 14, at 10 AM PT at hollywoodbowl.com. The full Hollywood Bowl 2024 season will be announced in February 2024.

For the most part, The Roots have been busy as the house band of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (who helped keep their friendship tight), but individual members like Questlove and Black Thought have been busy with endeavors ranging from memoirs (see Uproxx’s interview with Black Thought about The Upcycled Self here) to planning the Grammys’ Hip-Hop 50 tribute (which he says caused him to lose some teeth). Quest is also set to direct Disney’s live-action remake of The Aristocats.

Lizzo Brings Her Flute Out For On-Stage Appearance With Incubus

Lizzo is well known for many things about pop music fans. One of those is her dedication to playing the flute. She’s played the instrument on a number of her own songs including her 2022 mega-hit “About Damn Time.” Earlier this year she became one of the newest guest stars on The Simpsons. For her original episode, she wrote an entire original song which also featured her flute performances. She brought out her trademark instrument during yet another on-stage appearance over the weekend, one you probably wouldn’t expect.

LIzzo joined popular 90’s alt-rock band Incubus on stage during a recent concert in Los Angeles. The show was part of a series of performances celebrating the upcoming anniversary of the band’s 2001 album Morning View. The album contains some of the band’s biggest and most well-known tracks like “Wish You Were Here” and “Are You In?.” During the show, they surprised the crowd by bringing out the “Truth Hurts” singer to sing and play flute on the track “Aqueous Transmission.” Afterwards, they took to Instagram to praise the singer and thank her for joining them on stage. Lizzo Joins Incubus On Stage In LA

Public appearances by the singer have been few and far between recently. The whole world was shocked to find Lizzo facing both workplace harassment and sexual harassment lawsuits from her former dancers early this year. While many big stars including Beyonce, SZA, and Grimes came to the singer’s defense, she has still largely stayed out of the public eye.

Since the original lawsuit broke many other accusations have emerged some of which have become their own lawsuits. Despite the controversy Lizzo recently received a humanitarian award from the Black Music Action Collective at their annual gala. Where To Park Near The Hollywood Bowl

The Hollywood Bowl is one of the country’s most iconic venues, so naturally, a ton of great artists are set to perform at the Los Angeles spot this fall: The 1975 (on October 2), The Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie (October 13), and Boygenius (October 31) are just a few examples. Once you’ve chosen which shows you want to see and you’ve secured your tickets, the next pressing concern is how you’re gonna get there.

If you opt to drive, the venue has a dedicated webpage for helping to navigate parking. Probably their most important note: “Parking at the Bowl is extremely limited and may sell out in advance! All lots are stack parked and there is no early exit. Lots open three hours before the start of each event. If inventory is still available, cashiers accept cash or credit card.”

The venue has four lots (A, B, C, D), and prices for parking vary by lot and by event. On the Hollywood Bowl parking page, spots are sold per show and there’s a handy interactive map that shows what spots are available and how much they cost. The page also notes, “All parking lots are available for advance purchase until they are sold out.”

Snoop Dogg Is Commemorating The 30th Anniversary Of ‘Doggystyle’ With A Concert At The Hollywood Bowl

Apparently, Snoop Dogg‘s performance at the Hollywood Bowl for Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday celebration was just the start of his plans for the iconic venue this year. 2023 marks the 30th anniversary of Snoop’s debut album Doggystyle, and he’s celebrating as only he can: with a Snoop Dogg & Friends concert at the Hollywood Bowl produced by Dr. Dre.

Presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, the show will see Snoop perform his culture-defining album backed by the ReCollective Orchestra led by conductor Derrick Hodge, as well as some of the Doggfather’s nearest and dearest. The two-night event is scheduled for June 27 and June 28 at 8 pm, and tickets go on sale Friday, May 5 at 10 am. You can find more information here.

Snoop recently reissued Doggystyle on limited-edition vinyl to celebrate his favorite holiday but good luck getting your hands on a box; the entire run sold out nearly instantly, proving Snoop’s lasting importance to both hip-hop fans and stoners everywhere. Meanwhile, he teased a direct sequel to Doggystyle, fittingly (and somewhat sophomorically) titled Missionary. That’s presumably dropping sometime this year.

Other projects Uncle Snoop has been working on include trying to buy an NHL team, campaigning for a cameo on a British soap opera, and hitting the road with Wiz Khalifa for their High School Reunion Tour.

Dave Chappelle Attacker Hit With Prison Sentence

We all remember the video from earlier this year of Dave Chappelle being attacked while on stage. Seven months later, the man responsible for the attack, Isaiah Lee is receiving jail time for the offense.

The incident occurred during the comedian’s appearance at the Hollywood Bowl in May. Video footage taken by other members of the audience shows the attack taking place. Seemingly out of nowhere, Lee leaps from the front row of the crowd to jump up on the stage.

He subsequently bum-rushes Chappelle and tackles him. The comedian’s security and entourage were quick in their response, not allowing for the attacker to get very far.

Upon collecting himself, the 49-year-old proceeded to joke about the situation. “Thank God he was clumsy. He’s back there getting stomped,” he exclaimed while catching his breath.

According to a report from Deadline, Lee has now pleaded no contest to the charge of assault with a deadly weapon. As a result, he receives 270 days in jail.

Although the attacker had a replica handgun containing a hidden knife at the time of the assault, Chappelle suffered no injuries.

Later reports indicated that Lee had actually made a rap song about the comedian in 2020, in which he makes reference to the future attack. “Walkin’ straight into da Bowl,” he raps.

This news arrives on the heels of Chappelle recently receiving backlash for another one of his shows. Just a few days ago, he brought out his friend Elon Musk to join him on stage in San Fransisco.

The new owner of Twitter was immediately met with boos. In his since-deleted response to the situation, the SpaceX CEO wrote, “Technically, it was 90% cheers & 10% boos (except during quiet periods), but, still, that’s a lot of boos, which is a first for me in real life (frequent on Twitter).”

Of course, Musk has been under a lot of fire ever since the handling of his acquisition of Twitter in October.

After promptly firing major employees, he has gone on to roll out a paid verification feature, in which anyone can obtain a blue check – so long as they pay $7.99/month.

He also re-launched the Twitter Blue service, charging iPhone users more than other subscribers to access the “subscriber-only features.”

Dave Chappelle’s attacker, Isaiah Lee, has revealed he felt Will Smith’s attack on Chris Rock was commendable. Speaking with the New York Post, the attacker stated the Oscars slap inspired him to take the stage.

“That’s not right what [Chris Rock] said about his wife, calling her GI Jane,” Lee said. After stating the move inspired his actions, Lee added that Smith was right in “standing up for his wife.”

In a different conversation with the Post, Lee said as a member of the LGBTQ community, he wanted Chappelle to know that he should consider all audiences.

“I identify as bisexual… and I wanted him to know what he said was triggering,” he said to the Post. “I wanted him to know that next time, he should consider first running his material by people it could affect.”

Lee has entered a not guilty plea to the misdemeanor charges levied against him after the attack. He was charged with misdemeanor battery, possession of a weapon with intent to assault, unauthorized access to the stage area during a performance, and commission of an act that delays the event or interferes with the performer.

Lee also told the post that he is a single father of a five-year-old. Lee not only took issue with the jokes at the gay community but also stated Chappelle’s jokes toward the homeless were offensive. “It’s a struggle and I wanted Dave Chappelle to know it’s not a joke.”

Lee also stated Chappelle met with him later about the attack to which he told the comedian about his family history. “I told him my mother and grandmother, who fought for his civil rights to be able to speak, would be upset at the things he said,” Lee said. Lee said Chappelle’s response was sharp, “Now your story will die with you, son.”

In addition to his Chappelle attack, Complex reports L.A.’s District Attorney’s Office announced Lee was charged with attempted murder. The new charge is in connection with an incident from 2021.

According to authorities, Lee is accused of stabbing a roomate during an altercation at a housing apartment on Dec. 2. Lee pleaded not guilty.

“The publicity generated by the attack on Mr. Chappelle helped police solve this crime,” said LA County District Attorney George Gascón. “The incident that occurred at the Hollywood Bowl was misdemeanor conduct and rightfully referred to the City Attorney’s Office. Based on the nature and severity of the December attack, Mr. Lee is now facing felony charges which my office will prosecute.”

Lee also stated Chappelle met with him later about the attack to which he told the comedian about his family history. “I told him my mother and grandmother, who fought for his civil rights to be able to speak, would be upset at the things he said,” Lee said. Lee said Chappelle’s response was sharp, “Now your story will die with you, son.”

In addition to his Chappelle attack, Complex reports L.A.’s District Attorney’s Office announced Lee was charged with attempted murder. The new charge is in connection with an incident from 2021.

According to authorities, Lee is accused of stabbing a roomate during an altercation at a housing apartment on Dec. 2. Lee pleaded not guilty.

“The publicity generated by the attack on Mr. Chappelle helped police solve this crime,” said LA County District Attorney George Gascón. “The incident that occurred at the Hollywood Bowl was misdemeanor conduct and rightfully referred to the City Attorney’s Office. Based on the nature and severity of the December attack, Mr. Lee is now facing felony charges which my office will prosecute.”

Dave Chappelle‘s attacker has a new charge and it is completely unrelated to the Netflix is a Joke incident. According to Complex, L.A.’s District Attorney’s Office announced that 23-year-old Isaiah Lee was charged with attempted murder. The new charge is in connection with an incident from 2021.

For his attack on Chappelle Lee was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon. At one point, Lee created a rap song called “Dave Chappell” in 2020, the song didn’t contain any messages that could assume harm would one day come to the A-List comedian.

The Los Angeles Police Department stated the man was carrying a “replica handgun” with a knife blade inside when he tackled Chappelle. After he tackled Chappelle, the man attempted to flee the area but was quickly surrounded and “stomped out,” as Chappelle alluded to onstage. Images and video from the scene show the damage to Lee’s body, most notably a severely disfigured arm.

Dave Chappelle Releases a Statement Following Hollywood Bowl Attack

Following being attacked on stage at the Netflix is a Joke Festival at Hollywood Bowl, Dave Chappelle has released his first statement to CNN.

“As unfortunate and unsettling as the incident was, Chappelle went on with the show,” said Carla Sims, Chappelle’s representative, said in a statement. “Jamie Foxx and Chris Rock helped calm the crowd with humor before Chappelle introduced the last and featured musical guests for the evening.”

Dave Chappelle’s attacker has been formally named and charged. 23-year-old Isaiah Lee has been identified as the attacker and has been charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon.
