Deshaun Watson Met With Cheers at Practice After Receiving Suspension

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is calling for at least a full-year suspension for Cleveland Browns’ quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Goodell said the evidence from sexual misconduct allegations against Watson, 26 shows “egregious” actions and “predatory behavior.”

“We’ve seen the evidence,” Goodell said at a press conference on Tuesday. “[Robinson] was very clear about the evidence, should we enforce the evidence. That there was multiple violations here, and they were egregious, and it was predatory behavior. Those are things that we always felt were important for us to address in a way that’s responsible,” according to The Hill.

Seeking a harsher penalty under its personal conduct policy, the league last week appealed the six-game suspension handed down to the quarterback by a retired federal Judge Sue L. Robinson.

Watson is expected to start in Friday night’s game against the Jaguars in Jacksonville despite facing a potentially lengthy suspension. He’s allowed to play in the preseason games and practice following his suspension, which is being appealed by the NFL.

Jacoby Brissett is expected to start when the regular season opens in Charlotte against the Panthers on Sunday, September 11th.

Former New Jersey Attorney General Peter Harvey will hear the appeal.  There’s no timetable on when a ruling will be made.

Deshaun Watson Met With Cheers at Practice After Receiving Suspension

Barring an appeal by the NFL or the NFL Players Association, Deshaun Watson will be the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns in Week 7.

According to ESPN, Watson was suspended for six games without pay for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson handed down the punishment on Monday.

In a 16-page report, Watson noted the NFL recommended Watson to be suspended for the entirety of the forthcoming season. Now, the league and the Players Association are on the clock, having until this Thursday at 9 a.m. ET to appeal the ruling. The union has already expressed to stand next to Robinson’s decision.

In documents, Robinson stated Watson did “not fall into the category of violent conduct that would require the minimum 6-game suspension,” which signals “by far the most commonly-imposed discipline for domestic or gendered violence and sexual acts.”

Watson was at practice Monday after the decision was made and received cheers from fans viewing training camp. Brown’s ownership would release a statement.

“We respect Judge Robinson’s decision, and at the same time, empathize and understand that there have been many individuals triggered throughout this process,” Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in a statement Monday. “We know Deshaun is remorseful that this situation has caused much heartache to many and he will continue the work needed to show who he is on and off the field, and we will continue to support him.”

Watson faced 24 civil lawsuits. 20 of the 24 civil actions against him were settled. According to a statement from Southeast Texas attorney Tony Buzbee, Watson settled all but four of the sexual misconduct lawsuits. Lawsuit No. 24 featured graphic details.

According to ESPN, the plaintiff stated she massaged Watson twice. The first session was cut short due to a phone call, but during the second one, Watson exposed himself and masturbated in front of her. Afterward, Watson did not apologize or explain. Instead, he got up and left. After the event, the plaintiff quit massage therapy.

“Today we filed the twenty-fourth case alleging sexual misconduct against Deshaun Watson,” the attorney for all 24 plaintiffs, Tony Buzbee, said in a statement. “The allegations made in this new case are strikingly similar to those made by many of the other victims. Lost in the media frenzy surrounding Deshaun Watson is that these are twenty-four strong, courageous women who, despite ridicule, legal shenanigans, and intense media scrutiny, continue to stand firm for what is right.”

In response, Watson’s lawyer, Rusty Hardin, stated that “happy endings” are common in massage sessions and are not illegal. He also said Watson engaged in three consensual sex events.

In March 2021, Cleveland Browns announced Sunday that they traded for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, giving up three first-round picks, a 2023 third-round pick, a 2024 fourth-round pick for the QB, and a 2024 fifth-rounder.

Six of Watson’s $57,500 game checks in 2022 are expected to be missed, costing him $345,000 off his $1.035 million base pay. In addition to a basic salary that will increase to $46 million in 2023 and a $44.965 million signing bonus, Watson’s contract with the Browns includes a league-high $230 million guarantee for him.

Reactions from the Watson decision are below.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has settled 20 out of the 24 civil lawsuits against him. Southeast Texas attorney Tony Buzbee released a statement saying Watson settled all but four of the sexual misconduct suits. The terms and amounts of the settlements are confidential.

Attorney Buzbee announced the agreements on Tuesday, while praising every woman who sued Watson.  He plans to represent the four women, including Watson’s first accuser, Ashley Solis at trial who did not settle. Buzbee filed the lawsuits against Watson last year when he was with the Houston Texans.

The women who sued accused Watson of exposing himself and touching them inappropriately during massage appointments, along with harassment allegations. Earlier this year, two Southeast Texas grand juries no-billed and decided not to indict Watson after a police investigation of the claims.

Meantime, the troubles for the QB may not be over. An NFL spokesman said the settlements with 26-year-old Watson “has no impact on the collectively bargained disciplinary process.” The NFL could suspend him if it finds he violated the league’s personal conduct policy.

SOURCE SPORTS: Deshaun Watson Now Faces 23rd Lawsuit Over Alleged Sexual Assault

deshaun watson

A new lawsuit alleging sexual assault and harassment during massage sessions was filed Tuesday against Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who now faces 23 civil cases..

Tuesday’s suit alleges Nia Smith, who is identified by name and worked for A New U Salon Spa in Houston, had three meetings with Watson from June 2020 through Sept. 2020.

In the first session, Smith states “things became progressively weird” and Watson wanted her to focus on his buttocks. A second session alleges Watson attempted to grab the plaintiff’s buttocks and brushed up against her rear, and also asked the plaintiff if she wanted to perform a sexual act. In the third and final session, Smith alleges Watson got naked in front of her, refused to cover himself and repeatedly requested she have sex with him.

Watson denied the allegations through a statement by his attorney, Rusty Hardin.

“Deshaun Watson vehemently denies the allegations, just as he has since she first discussed them with members of our firm in March of last year,” the statement read, in part. “She repeated the allegations on social media in August and he denied them then. The only thing new about her contentions is the embellishment making them more extreme than prior versions. Deshaun’s denial remains the same.”

Watson was traded to the Browns this offseason and was rewarded with a new $230 million dollar contract. No word from the NFL as to if Watson will see some disciplinary actions from the league to start the new season. Especially with all this cases still pending.

The Cleveland Browns have made cornerback Denzel Ward the highest-paid player in his position in NFL history. Ward signed a five-year extension with the Browns worth $100.5 million with $71.25 of that guaranteed, per Adam Schefter.

Ward is now set to earn $20.1 million per year on average, making him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. He narrowly beat out Los Angeles Rams’ All-Pro corner Jalen Ramsey, who took to Twitter to show some. love to Ward.

Ward has accumulated an effective career, standing as one of only four players with 10-plus interceptions and 50-plus passes defense since being drafted in 2018. He’s earned trips to the Pro Bowl in 2018 and 2021 while also posting elite Pro Football Focus grades, owning the fourth-highest coverage mark among corners since 2018 (minimum 1,000 snaps) and allowing the sixth-lowest completion percentage in his career among corners with 100-plus targets since 2018.

Ward will look to help get the Browns back in the playoff mix in the loaded AFC with a new contract under his belt.

SOURCE SPORTS: Browns Officially Acquire Deshaun Watson In a Massive Trade With The Texans

The Cleveland Browns announced Sunday that they traded for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, giving up three first-round picks, a 2023 third-round pick, a 2024 fourth-round pick for the QB, and a 2024 fifth-rounder.

With the addition of Watson, it all but indicates the end of Baker Mayfield as their starting quarterback. The four-year starter has one year left on his rookie deal. Upon learning of the Browns’ pursuit of Watson, Mayfield requested a trade out of town.

Watson still faces 22 civil lawsuits and an NFL investigation that could result in a suspension. Shortly after the trade was announced, NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy released the following statement:

“Any transaction would not affect the NFL’s ongoing and comprehensive investigation of the serious allegations against Deshaun Watson. Nor would it affect his status under the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the Personal Conduct Policy.

“If the league’s investigation determines that Watson violated the Personal Conduct Policy, discipline may be imposed pursuant to the policy and the CBA.”
